Greyson Hayden wants to prove to his ex that he's made it. He's a successful stock contractor with a couple of million dollar bulls, a ranch owner with more acres than he can count, and he stopped drinking when Kyler kicked him out. He's had a lot to prove, but now he's back in town to show Kyler that he has. And maybe rub it in.
The hardest thing Kyler Lassiter ever did was let Greyson go, and he's lost a lot in his life, right up to his legs in a terrible accident. He's willing to let Greyson one up him if it makes the man feel better, but when fate throws them together again in the most bizarre way, Ky isn't sure he'll survive it, or having to lose Greyson again when it's all said and done.
Can these two hardheaded cowboys learn to forgive each other, and themselves in time to find something lasting, or are they more broken than broken in?
This is a MM cowboy romance with tough love, tough luck, and lots of learning to be something new.
Texan to the bone and an unrepentant Daddy's Girl, BA Tortuga spends her days with her hounds and her beloved wife, texting her grandbabies, and eating Mexican food. When she's not doing that, she's writing. She spends her days off watching rodeo, knitting, and surfing Pinterest in the name of research. Following their own personal joys, BA and Julia heard the call of the high desert and they now live in the New Mexico mountains. BA's personal saviors include her wife, her best friends, and coffee. Lots of coffee. Really good coffee.
Having written everything from fist-fighting rednecks to cowboy daddies to werewolves, BA does her damnedest to tell the stories of her heart, which is committed to giving everyone their happily ever after. With books ranging from hard-hitting BDSM, to fiery passions, to the most traditional of love stories, BA refuses to be pigeon-holed by anyone but the voices in her head.
Both of our cowboys are see each other at the rodeo. Years ago, Tyler told Greyson to leave, because his alcohol and bar flies had reached his limit. No more. Since then, Kyle has lost both legs and runs his downsized ranch all alone. Kyle is a well known horse whisperer, roper, and has a well trained white Pyrenees that helps him.
Ex bull rider, Greyson, got cleaned up and became a successful with his ranch and bull breeding business.
The next day after the rodeo they hashed out their differences, when a step off of the curb landed Kyle with a broken arm. Greyson stepped up to care for him. Will they get a second chance, or are they too stubborn to see the reality of their longtime loves?
Greyson's bull ranch is huge and quite a lucrative business, plus he has other animals. The days on the ranch are fascinating for Kyle, with good days and bad, and the variety of animals, especially the horses.
The men are upfront and honest in all things, and their previous emotions and love have grown up and are deeper and truer. We can feel the love when they are together, and we are shown the intensity with this well written tale. I loved it !
We get hot cowboys, sexy times, ranch life, a rescue and more. It's a terrific B.A. Tortuga book. ENJOY !
This was another BA Tortuga great, low-angst feel-good romance. Greyson and Kyler split up years ago when Kyler asked an alcoholic Greyson to leave. Now, Greyson is clean, sober, and well-to-do. When they meet, Greyson wants to rub Kyler's face in it or maybe he just wants to see the man he never stopped loving. When he learns that Kyler lost both legs and now wears prosthetics, he is surprised. When they get the opportunity to spend more time together, they hope that love can be better the second time around. Although there are no huge surprise here, the book has nice relationship pacing, a pack of supportive friends and family, passion, and a "to the bones" kind of love.
This was my favorite BA Tortuga book to date! The author will never be my top favorite because her books are too low angst for me but they're like catnip. The combination of things she has in her books call to me and I can't ignore them. We have:
- hard working, hardy cowboys with hearts of gold - realistic depictions of ranch life (the animals, landscapes, routines etc) - thick Southern accents that roll off the page - cowboys who love their lives and the people/animals/routines in it so much that I end up being swept up in that joy - MCs with traumatic but not OTT pasts
This book's premise had additional things that made me add it to my TBR as soon as I came across it. It's a second chance romance between Kyler and Greyson.
The story is essentially a big pile of hurt-comfort with tons of sweet domestic moments, two boys who are thrilled to be reunited with their soulmate and the soothing comfort of lots of animals, delicious food and beautiful nature landscapes. What made this story work for me when Soft Place To Fall was only a 3 star read was that the author made the clever decision to put the MCs' most traumatic experiences in the distant past. Greyson is solid with his sobriety throughout the book and there are loads of references to how he maintains his sobriety and how Kyler learns to support that maintenance, but there's no high angst scenarios connected to it. In addition, Kyler is fully comfortable living as a double amputee so anything related to his legs isn't a major source of trauma for him any longer. He has his own coping mechanisms (like Snow being trained to wake him if he has nightmares) and he's accepted his disability. Not being able to use both arms results in some frustration and provides tons of opportunities for Greyson to physically help Kyler but this also wasn't a source of drama. So it made complete sense for the book to have a slow, low angst tone throughout, despite the dramatic pasts of the MCs. In Soft Place To Fall, the MCs go through an extremely traumatic situation at the start of the story so it gave me whiplash when the author randomly had them get over the situation at the halfway mark so the rest of the story could be low angst. But in this book, the author created the perfect premise - one that would include interesting characters who I instantly connected with but allowed for the low angst tone to make sense.
There was so much about the story I adored. One of my favorites was how Greyson helping Kyler with day-to-day personal tasks was never sexualized in any way and it was done in a way that clearly demonstrated how much Greyson loved Kyler. It's easy to love somebody when all that's required is watching movies together and having sex, but it's a whole other thing when one person needs help with things like dressing, bathing and going to the bathroom.
Also - OMG, I never realized how I take it for granted that going to the bathroom is a very simple process for me. I can literally do it while half asleep. I don't meant the actual biological aspect but the process of getting from bed to toilet and back. The process is frustratingly long and embarrassing for Kyler and I appreciated that Greyson remained mature and as respectful as possible throughout, in particular because it was Greyson who had to put Kyler on the toilet seat and then go through the annoying process of slowly getting his pants down. This book made me look at some of my day to day actions in a whole new light and appreciate how easy I have it.
I also loved that the author gave Kyler and Greyson different ranching expertise. Greyson's ranch is huge and that's why he regularly gets people dropping off different animals when they can no longer take care of them and of course, Mr. Rough-And-Tough-Cowboy can't ever go to the auction without buying up all the poor, unwanted animals who would be destined to go to the slaughterhouse if he didn't buy them. So Greyson has a lot of horses but he's not a horse guy. And this never occurred to me but it makes sense that ranchers/cowboys would specialize in certain livestock. Greyson knows bulls and cows but not horses...but he knows somebody who does. Enter Kyler, who's knowledge and skills with horses is legendary in his town. This was great because once Kyler comes to live with Greyson (long story, they're still not a couple when it happens, which was great), Kyler immediately takes charge of Greyson's horse barn and the inexperienced hands who have been doing their best so far. Here's this guy who only has one functional arm yet he's clearly so good with the horses that everybody else trails along behind him, eager to learn and soak up his knowledge. I loved this so much because it shifted Kyler out of the victim box that he would have otherwise been stuck in for the entire book.
It was also great that the author hit the right balance between providing enough ranching details that I was immersed in the world and I absolutely believed that Greyson and Kyler are cowboys to the bone but the details weren't excessive. A lot of it is told instead of shown and while I didn't understand some of the (short) conversations Kyler and Greyson had about the animals and other things, that didn't matter because they served their purpose: demonstrating that these guys know what they're doing and they love what they do.
Something that this author is well known for is her depiction of thick Southern accents and yummy Southern food. In particular, I can't wrap my head around the idea of people putting CHILES into EVERY SINGLE MEAL of the day and how normal it is. Listen - I can't do any spicy food whatsoever, so the idea of deliberately adding chiles to all of my meals makes me want to cry. But kudos to people who can stomach it.
I've been told that the food and the accents actually don't reflect the realities of New Mexico...but the author is from New Mexico so it's confusing but my Canadian self is not the right person to assess the situation. Anyway, as usual, I was delighted by the many Southern expressions that came left, right and center, even when I didn't understand what they meant. Here are some of my favorites:
'Someone he could hang his hat on.' 'He was as happy as a dog with three tails.' "I haven't thought about him in a month of Sundays." 'He was nervous as a long-tailed cat in a room of rocking chairs.'
Two expressions that I can't understand but find delightful:
'He sat there with his teeth in his mouth, not sure what to say to that.' 'Ky's friend Tim had shown up, and he'd tried to tell Greyson how the cow had eaten the cabbage, but Greyson wasn't having it.'
(please note that the last quote has nothing to do with an actual cow - the guys are talking in the hospital after Kyler breaks his arm about how it had happened)
Another thing that I enjoyed in this book that wasn't done well in the previous books I've read by this author was that the pacing of everything was done right. In Wrecked, one of the MCs is also injured but in that book, the injuries are much worse than a simple arm break, yet the MC had fully recovered and they were having athletic sex within weeks. So I was thrilled in this book when Kyler's recovery from his broken arm is paced realistically. The book takes place over roughly 2 months and Kyler's in a cast for the entire time and can't use the arm. When sexy times happen, the boys wait until Kyler's been put in a solid cast and then the sexy times are carefully structured to not include a lot of athletic bouncing around (if you know what I mean). These guys are in their 40s, they know they have the rest of their lives to be together so it was realistic that they would hold off on some bedroom activities until Kyler has recovered.
Connected to the above point - I thought the author did a great job balancing the realities that the MCs never stopped loving each other with them not wanting to rush things. Greyson jumps into taking care of Kyler after he breaks his arm and Greyson naturally falls into some of the routines they'd had a decade earlier - calling Kyler endearments, kissing his forehead etc - and Kyler happily soaks these up but he doesn't allow himself to make assumptions about their future. It's so clear that the boys want to be together forever and I felt their frustration when they forced themselves to take things slow so they weren't risking messing things up. In particular, Greyson was very conscious of Kyler relying on him for help due to his broken arm and he didn't want to take advantage of that situation by pushing for something more when Kyler wasn't in the right headspace to think about his future. But it never stopped being adorable how much Greyson wanted Kyler back and how he couldn't help slip in little hints and comments along the way, indicating that he had a Kyler-shaped space in his life that was just waiting for Kyler to say yes to. It's exactly the kind of thing I love in a second chance romance!
The author also did a great job throughout this book with ensuring that the low angst tone didn't mean a lack of plot. I really struggled with Soft Place To Fall and Wrecked because the low angst tone was achieved by having no plot. In this book, the author took the time to come up with simple, low angst but interesting scenarios that kept the plot moving. In addition, the side characters served important purposes in this book. We have characters like Greyson's ranch staff who Kyler learns to interact with, Greyson's AA mentor, Kyler's best friends/former neighbors/godchildren etc. In particular, I loved the recurring role that Kaitlyn (Kyler's teenage goddaughter) played throughout. Connected to that - the author decided to throw an incredibly tense climax arc into the final chapters, which pushed the intensity up to 100 and I loved having that variety but I especially appreciated how the author used various characters and pre-established issues from the rest of the book to make that arc more meaningful.
So why only 4 stars? My personal preference is for more conflict so while I enjoyed the story a lot, it didn't have that same wow factor that I require for a 5 star read. That being said, when looking at the book overall, this was my favorite Tortuga story so far and I hope she continues taking the approach she did with this one going forward.
A second chance book about cowboys definitely is my idea of a good time and I ended up really enjoying this one. I really enjoyed the romance and the second chance part of this book, it was veey lovely to read about.
I received an arc of this book and this is my honest opinion
This is a really sweet second chance romance for two rough cowboys who’ve had life changing experiences in their time apart. Ky’s so bent on being self-sufficient, and never becoming the burden he imagines himself to be, that it takes him a bit to recognize Grey’s not humoring him. Meanwhile, Grey’s relishing the opportunity to be the caretaker Ky had been for him during their past love affair. I could feel how strongly Ky didn’t want to be seen as less-than, and I loved that Grey didn’t feel that way at all; he’s blown away by Ky’s strength and determination. And his muscles. Because, hoo boy, he’s as buff as ever, having to get strong enough to use the wheelchairs and crutches and ride his horses and all, even with the prosthetics. Admiration fair streams off Grey, and it settles Ky’s mind greatly. What also settles Ky is the place he imagines building for himself within Grey’s life and business, one that Grey’s more than eager to indulge if only Ky will agree to stay. Because it’s pretty clear after barely a week of sharing time and space again that separating a second time will crush them both.
*4.5* I do love B.A.'s cowboy stories. A little dose of drama, some heartwarming romance and a great community of people. Grayson and Kyler have a second chance at their HEA here after Kyler kicked Grayson out ten years ago, hoping it would be the shove needed to help him get sober. They've both changed and had some big things happen in their lives, definitely not all good but their reunion's unintentional accident gives Grayson the reason he needs to spend time with and care for Kyler, or at least as much as Kyler will allow. One of the things B.A.'s cowboys have in common is their stubborn streak. Geez, these two men have been through it between them. Recovery for Grayson once he picks himself out of the bottom of a bottle but Kyler has a life changing accident years ago. My heart hurt for them both, what Kyler felt was necessary to help Grayson years ago, what they both have subsequently been through and now being back in each others' space. It's clear to read how they both still feel about each other and the strong connection that they still share, not diminished over time. I really enjoyed how the story plays out for the two of them here. Allowing for both physical and mental healing whilst bringing them back together, as though they were always meant to be. They're also surrounded by a great group of people. Kyler has his best friend and their family who basically treat him as one of their own. Then, Grayson has built his ranch from the ground up with a great crew who clearly love their boss and each other. B.A. definitely makes ranch life sound appealing when it comes to horses and the beautiful setting. Another great cowboy story with wonderful characters and a much deserved second chance at their HEA. I received an ARC and am happily giving a review.
You ever read a book that is so hauntingly beautiful and heartbreaking at the same time? This is it....Holy Hell, this one is going to stay with me a while. I'd like to say that I don't often read this author, but after this...I'm hooked!
I am going to be very vague in this review, any spoiling of this one would be such an injustice to this story. What I will say is this, it was just the right amount of heartbreak, tragedy and a love so beautiful that it withstood time and hell on earth just to repair two broken souls that belong together as one whole. Get ready to shed some tears 😉
I would most definitely recommend this book wholeheartedly!
* I received an ARC from GRR, this is my open and honest review *
This is the first western/rodeo type novel I've read by this author. The book was good, and I'm glad I read it and can recommend it to others, but this genre is not my cup of tea. Since I'm always up for expanding my horizons, I gave it a read. I've never been to a rodeo and know next to nothing about them. I'm more of a paranormal or mainstream contemporary romance kind of girl. Give me more like the Banished series by B. A. Tortuga, that's my cup of tea!!!
Plot: After 7 years of being together Kylar kicks Greyson out for being a drunk. He's tired of bailing Greyson out of trouble and knows that he can't help him in the way Greyson needs. Ten years pass before their paths cross again and their lives are very different... they are no longer the men they used to be. Greyson is a successful business man and Kylar is just getting by, living a life of self-imposed isolation. Can they finally get a HEA?
Greyson, recovering alcoholic, retired bull rider, successful business man breeding and running bulls
Kylar, horse trainer, lost his legs in a freak accident, godfather to his best friend's daughter
Second chance love, cowboy love with all the feels, past pain, past hurt, low heat
Kyler did the most difficult thing he’d ever do, telling his drunken lover Greyson to leave his ranch, feeling that Greyson loved the bottle more than he’d ever loved Kyler. Ten years pass and both are different men. Greyson is a successful rancher, clean and sober. Kyler is still on his ranch, breeding horses and living without his legs. When they meet again the sparks fly and Greyson manages to break Kyler’s arm (accidentally). Giving Greyson the perfect opportunity to wiggle his way back into Kyler’s life.
This author writes great cowboy. While this story isn’t as steamy as some of the author’s other books, it’s a full on, swoon worthy book. Kyler and Greyson’s journey back to each other was sweet.
My thoughts on this book are varied. Good storyline, great main characters, a bit of action that I liked, and the supporting cast was very likable. What I wasn’t sure about was how fast they got back together. It seemed like past (and future) issues were solved very quickly. Never thought I’d want a book with a little more angst. I did enjoy it though.
Second chance romance for two deserving cowboys. Great characters with lots of real issues. This was an emotionally engaging and inspiring story of how two men find their way back to each other.
Life can be a struggle and Kyler and Greyson have struggled together and individually more than some. I enjoyed their journey of finding their love again and working through their issues to become stronger than ever.
I was gifted this book from Gay Romance Reviews and i freely give my honest opinion and review.
When I read the blurb for this I prepped myself for one of this author's more angsty novels. I couldn't have been more wrong. This was a sweet and gentle second chance romance.
The possibility of conflict and angst was easily side stepped as the boys drifted back into the relationship with no real drama and a new awareness of each others limitations.
Firstly let me say I’ve got this book of gay romance reviews and this is me leaving my honest review. I have firstly got to say this is the most beautiful book I’ve ever read. Greyson and Kyler have been through hell but they have come out the other side and found that what they did first have was true love. This second chance that they’ve been given a grab with both hands and they make everything work. Years ago Kyler could not take Greyson’s alcoholic crazy life anymore. And kicked him out. It wasn’t that he didn’t love him but he didn’t know how to help him And thought maybe if he hit rock bottom he would make his way up. Watching him leave was the hardest thing he had ever done. Greyson could not believe the love of his life had given up on him. But thankfully it was the kick in the bum that he needed and he got himself clean. It was one of the hardest things he did that with the help of a sponsor and AA he got through it. Now years and years later he is a very successful bull breeder And he had made his millions so when he was heading back towards Kyler he had something to prove. Kyler was at the rodeo to watch his goddaughter take part in the barrel race. She was his life, the child he never had. But when he was queueing up he did not expect to see the love of his life Greyson. He quickly send a text to his friend Tim to come and help him because what Greyson Didn’t know that was Kyler had been in an awful accident years ago and lost both his legs. And Kyler was feeling unsteady. Greyson and Kyler agreed to meet for breakfast to catch up. Was that a good idea?? At the diner they talked about how they were doing but when he learned of Kyler’s accident he felt sick that he wasn’t there to help him. As they were leaving they had heated words which ended up with Kyler losing his balance, falling and breaking his arm. How would he cope now?? Greyson knew he was not going to leave Kyler behind he had to take him back to his ranch so he could look after him what would become of them spending more time together??? Gosh I just wanna tell you the whole story but I’m gonna have to stop myself because you need to find out for yourself but let me tell you this book was beautiful it was so touching there’s so much heartache in this book but together these two are just meant to be. they are soulmates through and through they are just beautiful people and they deserve to have happiness and that means being together. I really enjoyed the other characters at the ranch as well. It came across as just one big family. And that is what Kyler needed, yes he had his best friend and godchildren but he had long bouts of loneliness too so now he finds themselves in a beautiful family working with the horses that he loves and with a man he adores by his side what more could you ask for.
. Every time I read one of BA Tortuga books I think, great more cowboy to love!
Every time I read one of BA Tortuga books I think, great more cowboys to love!
Kyler and Greyson had been a couple for years. But eventually Kyler realized he was not Greyson's first love, or his second. For Greyson it was always about alcohol. Eventually Kyler got fed up and kicked out and broke up with him. Now years later it is time for the rodeo to come back to Kyler's town and he has heard that Greyson might be coming as well.
Greyson is coming back to town. He is living high and wants to shove it in Kyler's face how well he has done without him. Well he did help by breaking up with him and kicking him out, but for the most part Greyson has done it all.
Not only that Greyson asks him to breakfast so they can catch up. Knowing it is the cowboy thing he agrees to meet him the next morning. But things are not at all what Greyson expected. He realizes that Kyler has sustained a serious injury and has had to sell most of his acreage off. However after an accidental "bump" and Ky falls into the street and breaks an arm. Feeling gutted because it was his fault Greyson vows to help him. But just what does that mean?
Will Kyler allow Greyson to care for him? Will Kyler allow Greyson to take him to his own ranch? Will the two hardheaded men see they were meant for each other after all?
I could and will read more of BA’s books. BA writes her books from her heart, open land and all the cowboy goodness of the world. She’s a great author. Loved the book.
I think this is B.A. Tortuga’s best one yet! I simply adore the book so much that I’m aiming to get a signed paperback for my bookshelf. I can’t rave enough that one of the MC is a person with a disability and a stud! I honestly do not think there’s enough stories about a hot stud with a disability. I love how the author would write about how a guy with a disability would make love to an abled stud and it just read very smoothly. There wasn’t any awkwardness at all. Kudos!!! What makes this one so endearing is it is a second chance type of love story. The book cover is to die for! The stud on the cover has to be Kyler! It would make for an awesome TV movie!!!!
The story centers on a second chance between Kyler, a double amputee and Greyson, an alcoholic. It starts with Kyler telling Greyson to get out of his life because of Greyson’s alcoholism. Of course, it ended horribly. Then many years later, Greyson bumped into Kyler at a rodeo. Greyson had an agenda which was to show Kyler what he had been missing out all these years (being successful by having a ranch, prized bulls, and looking much handsomer) while Kyler had an agenda which was to hide his disability. Unbeknownst to Greyson, Kyler had an horrible accident which cost him his legs. Greyson did not know this because Kyler was sitting down when they first met. They decided to meet again the next day. That’s where I’m going to stop and stare you in the eyes to beg you to pick up the book to find out what happens. That book is definitely in my Top 5 list!
This second-chance cowboy romance has all the feels, and a wonderful found family vibe. I was pulled into Greyson and Kyler’s story immediately. I love how both men have risen above events in their pasts to force new lives, yet have never lost how they feel about each other.
I love the almost slice of life feel of the story. Kyler and Greyson’s relationship feels very natural and real.
Kyler’s story is tragic, with his accident, but he has such a strength of character moving forward and running his properly. His ability with horses shows his kindness and determination. I love how both he and Greyson notice they’ve both changed. Instead of arguing, they talk things through and both know their limitations. I like how Greyson realises in time the reason behind Kyler’s past actions. Separate these men are both strong, but lonely. I loved how they grow into a relationship again, yet are careful not to presume anything.
The found family vibe in this story is one of its strengths. Greyson and Kyler’s friendships are wonderfully supportive. I particularly loved Kyler’s relationship with Tim and his family. The cowboys on the ranch all work together and look out for each other. I love Ana. She’s more a mother figure than a housekeeper and quickly takes Kyler under her wing too.
Snow needs a mention. She’s protective of Kyler and not only a great support dog, but a friend to him too, and family.
Ky and Greyson have a supremely codependent, difficult beginning that is complicated by alcohol, enabling, and an honest effort to do the right thing that breaks both of their hearts. It's obvious that Ky was making the right, albeit achingly impossible choice to give Greyson the space necessary to come to terms with his demons and find a healthier way forward, even if it's not with Ky.
I hurt for them in that prologue. It's not often that I willingly read second-chance stories because it's a sore topic for me and it's not often written well with the kind of apologies, groveling, or growth I find reasonable and expected. But when it's a trope written by an author I enjoy I'll sometimes give it a go and with this story I was glad I did.
This was a more subtle, gentle story. It was one that showed a maturity, a kindness, a strength only achieved by living through adversity, and a more tender love that meant the second chance was going to be the forever chance both men deserved.
Ky's graciousness in accepting Greyson's need to prove he made it was pretty humbling. His own personal tragedies during their separation in turn humbled Greyson allowing him to look beyond his own self and his need for recognition to the man that made the hard choice for their benefit. Greyson's newfound softness, his self-acceptance, allowed him to really see Ky, to appreciate him in a way he couldn't before through the haze of alcohol.
While we don't find out what caused Greyson's dependence on alcohol we do get a glimpse of what kept Ky sticking with him for seven years before their breakup. Together they just fit and even though the story felt simple, I thought it was a good way to show the gentler side of them finding their new fit as a bright contrast to their more volatile passion that was far more unstable in their past. This was a quiet joy to read and this is going on my "read when you need a sweet, simple pick-me-up" shelf.
Ms. B.A. Tortuga has become one of my "must-read" authors, I love her angsty stories about cowboys and their woes in life.
Greyson and Kyler had a history, albeit what Kyler did was for the good of Greyson, it still hurts both of them. Since then a lot has happened in their respective lives. Events that have changed their lives significantly.
A return to Kyler's hometown for a show was meant to show Kyler that Greyson has made it. He wanted to gloat and maybe deep inside wanted to let Kyler see what he lost. But these men are not mean, they might have their perfected their pride and stubbornness to the T but they are not mean. Especially not to each other. They both consider each other, "the one who got away."
An accident gave Greyson and Kyler the second chance they both didn't know they needed. And things have not change in the way they feel for each other, in fact, they are rediscovering each other and just letting how they feel show. Greyson bringing Kyler home with him to heal I think is the best idea ever. In this way, Kyler won't be alone and he can see for himself another way to live, maybe, fingers crossed.
A lovely, angsty, second chance love story between two cowboys who found each other years ago but had to live their own lives first before finding each other again. Thank you Ms. Tortuga for another beloved story!
3.5. I wondered what a ‘pie crust promise’ is and thought it might be that it crumbles and doesn’t hold up. I looked it up and that’s what it is. Interesting to learn a new phrase. I enjoyed the story and the MCs and that different style dialogue this author uses, but almost everyone in the book spoke in the same choppy and slangy manner. It was okay with the two cowboy MCs, but the ‘man’ and ‘good deal’ was constantly coming out of everyone’s mouth, even a mommy with kids. It was disconcerting and took away from my enjoyment of the story. Another thing that I was okay with but noticed and wondered about was the off page sex. Lots of off page sex after one good reunion sex scene earlier in the book. I don’t like the steam being withheld, especially when it’s cowboys! This was still a nice read, but a bit too long and repetitive. Am adding that the author writes delicious food descriptions. All the food prep and meals were nicely described. 😋
Broken In is an amazing story and I loved it. It is beautifully written, sweet, emotional, gritty, deals well with some very difficult issues, the characters are wonderful and I was fully engaged from the first page to the last. Kyler is a sweetheart and he has had to deal with a lot in the ten years since he had to send Greyson away for his own good. Greyson wants to show Kyler that he is doing well but due to unforeseen circumstances they end up spending a lot of time together and both of them will have some very difficult decisions to make if they want to be together again. They are perfect for each other and I love how their relationship evolves as they have a strong connection and smoking hot chemistry. I love the secondary characters, the ending is perfect and I can't wait to see what the author has in store for us next.
I received a copy of this book from Gay Romance Reviews, and this is my honest review.
Broken In by BA Tortuga is a sweet second chance cowboy story with a little angst and a romance that withstood Greyson and Kyler's time apart.
After seven years together Kyler ends his relationship with Greyson due to Greyson's alcoholism. During their time apart, Greyson puts in the necessary work to stop drinking and builds a better life for himself. Kyler's life hasn't been easy during those years - because of a freak accident, he lost both his legs and is living a mostly solitary life running his horse farm.
It took me awhile to warm up to Greyson, but he eventually showed that he was committed to Kyler through his words and actions. The MC's were both on the same page as far as their relationship and I appreciated that they talked things over and didn't have any misunderstandings as to where their relationship was headed.
This was a low heat, high romance book between two men who made the most of their second chance.
At one point in the story I wondered if the author was being a bit sadistic and intended to make the main characters, and simultaneously the reader, suffer yet another setback on the road to happiness. But Kyler and Greyson are cowboys and they face the world, the weather, and fate together.
It a story where the romance does not involve candlelight dinners, fancy locations and striking gestures, but it is fuelled by hard work, trust and respect, acceptance. Their past struggles and life experiences have impacted each man’s growth, but they are still the right person for each other even after ten years apart.
This is not an easy read, but it is a story of courage, uprightness. New Mexico, its hard working life, bulls and horses are all part of the story and at the end I felt like as if I had spent a few months on the ranch learning about the joys and difficulties of raising bulls and barrel horses.
This book is amazing! The story of Kyler and Greyson is filled with love, loss, and second chances. The two were together until Greyson’s drinking got too much for Kyler to stand and Kyler lets him go and it will hurt them both. Greyson manages to get sober and is doing well for himself when the two meet again years later. Meeting one morning for breakfast, Greyson will learn of the terrible accident that left Kyler in need of prosthetics. An argument between the two will end up leaving Kyler with a need to be cared for full time for several weeks. Greyson agrees to do it and eventually he will take Kyler home to his ranch in order to get Kyler the help he needs to recover. During this time, the two men will learn that their love for each other never truly died and will get a second chance to have the love they always wanted.
I read an ARC copy of this book and am volunteering my honest review.
A beautiful story about two people finding each other again
Man, this one pulled at the heartstrings. My and Greyson were one of those couples that unfortunately needed to lose each other to be able to one day be in a place where they could have their HEA. My heart broke for Ky; he really had been through so much. To be honest, initially I was predisposed to disliking Greyson. I didn’t like the idea of him ‘rubbing’ his success in Ky’s face, especially given the circumstances. However, I warmed to him pretty quickly, especially when it became clear his anger was perhaps something else masquerading as anger. The way these two found each other together, found a way to have their HEA, was so lovely. As usual, BA’s focus on found family is lovely. Whilst Ky and Greyson are fantastic they’re also surrounded by an amazing group of people.
This is the story of Greyson and Kyler. Please be aware that sentitive issues like alcolism and being an amputee form part of the story. I have had B. A. Tortuga in my TBR pile for awhile now and I am so glad I started it with this book. I adored this book and I loved Grey and Ky. This story is a second chance at love and I loved how the author brought them back together. I loved the honesty and genuineness that came through. The characters, both main and secondary are wonderfully written and their story is so very beautiful. Definitely recommended.
I received this book as an Arc and I am voluntarily reviewing it.
Another winner from Ms. Tortuga. A touching second chance story. I speak from reading experience of her books and each one has heart, angst, and satisfying endings. "Broken In" is beautifully and emotionally written with a endearing love theme. "Cowboy way" and "Pie crust promises" to its fullest extent. Grayson and Kylar each had their burdens to bear, and each had much to overcome. Grayson's alcoholism destroyed their relationship and took years of AA and dealing with his faults, but he met them and was now in New Mexico to win back his lover Kylar. Little did Grayson realize what had happened to Kylar. Kylar's freak accident left him disabled but his courage enabled him to continue on with his ranch though finances limited his work. Each has a long trek to "they were a 'they' " but with each path taken they walked back into each other arms were so worth it in the end. A very satisfying read for me for which I'm leaving a voluntary review.
To say Greyson and Kyler have a complicated history is both absolutely true and a little bit deceptive— what they have is history with a lot of feelings, some serious choices, and baggage for days, but along with that is a shared love undiminished by time or drama. I loved the care and compassion with which these characters are drawn: huge hearts, tons of stubbornness, and a connection that really is worth everything each play a part in their story, and as an added bonus they have some great supporting characters in their lives. A really moving and enjoyable read.
*I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book.
The plot doesn’t sound like much of a story. Tyler and Grayson are in a relationship and Tyler kicks alcoholic Greyson out because he realizes that they aren’t good for each other. Greyson comes back years later to rub his success in Tyler’s face. In the writing hands of BA Tortuga though this becomes a study of how two people can either mess each other up or heal each other. I think this is a wonderful story and I enjoyed it immensely. High on the emotions, medium angst, wonderful plot and high cuddle stuff. Another great mm cowboy romance.
Every book that I read by BA Tortuga has been great and this one didn't disappoint either. Greyson and Kyler were lovers but Kyler let him go because of his addiction to alcohol. The book is a second-chance romance and forgiveness. Years later they get a chance to talk and clear the air, but Greyson doesn't know that Kyler is an amputee. Greyson is given the chance to take of Kyler after a freak accident. The book is romantic, sweet, cowboys and their love for all animals, great characters and I enjoyed it from start to finish. Looking forward to the next book from this author.
This sounded like it was going to be so good. Turns out that it wasn’t for me. I called it quits when one MC said “he’d tried to tell Greyson how the cow had eaten the cabbage,” - uhhh, WTF does that even mean???? They were talking about surgery on Kyler’s arm. Cows? Cabbage? What? Also, half the time I couldn’t tell whose POV it was in. I’d think it was one guy, then find out it was the other one. Or it would change mid paragraph. My brain can’t handle that right now.
