A Very Unusual Journey Into Play

Rate this book
Why do children need play?   Play has the very real power to transform children’s lives. It has a unique and profound impact on the neurological, emotional and physical development and wellbeing of children - from therapeutic play and overcoming anxiety, to positive behaviour, mental health and even life expectancy. This book brings together two hot topics - play and neuroscience – breaking them down in an accessible way and offering a new perspective and voice on the topic of play. Weaving theory and practical examples together, and based on over 30 years’ experience of working with children, Ben presents a compelling argument that play is not merely an optional extra to childhood but a vital developmental process and one of the most important things a child ever does.

Amazing, validating and thought provoking read on the power of play. I just wish I had this knowledge when my children were small to challenge some of their teachers… A must read for anyone who has or works with children

I'm a Play Therapist, and I don't leave reviews, I don't always know what's best to say or how to say it (thanks, dyslexia!) However, in this circumstance I feel so convicted to that I am breaking my usual habit.
This is a sensational resource for anyone with children in their life: their own, friends and family's, or clients/those at their place of work. The book beautifully balances the take away points of play, using real life scenarios, exploring the science, and ideas of implementation regarding playful interventions and a playful approach to any interaction with a child.
As a professional I rejoice that I have a more relatable language to explain my field. As a father I am empowered to engage with my own son in a more playful way.
A wonderful book, engaging and easy to read, worth every penny, and thoroughly recommended.
