Read these in order

Oops, I jumped too soon. I haven't actually finished this one. And won't. I got bored. The thing is, I care about Zac and saving the world. He's done that, at this point. The remaining "threats" are the Dominators, who have never been interesting to me. They have free power and zero accountability and just exist because of author say-so. So my patience for them is practically zero. Zac killed one and I'm all, yay, let's have more of that with no nonsense. No spoilers, but there was nonsense.

And the mysterious threat behind the Dominators is even less interesting. Some nebulaec psycho karma beast that's so powerful the only real strategy is to hide very very carefully is more than a little silly. Okay, fine, the karmic threads are a little interesting to consider, find, and sever. The use of Karma overall in the series is fun. But the threat itself is boring.

And the Mystic thingy might be interesting, but we've spent three books avoiding going inside and now Zac is going to be the last to the party despite being the first to find the stupid thing. And it isn't helping that the only competition are a group of weasels, and another group of weasels, and, oh yeah, the craptastic Dominators.

Did I mention that I stopped once it became clear that the Dominators were going to stick around? Ugh. I'm keeping this at three stars because it's still got the things I like and it's a creative power fantasy and all. If it didn't look like the Dominators were going to take up all the conflict space I might push through. But as it stands, I think I'm done.

It's finally over, this was incredibly boring for the most part.
The boring chunks are basically things I consider a mistake, over analyzing certain things that the MC won't even choose.
Or a lot of speculation on what something could be.
A lot of overthinking basically that is just so incredibly boring.
As for right now this is dnf for the series, the other two I am reading which are Dungeon Crawler Carl and He who fights with monsters are just much more interesting. Hell, even the Chinese novel I Shall seal the heavens is much more interesting, and most important they are less boring.
I just can't risk putting time in this again and reading 60% out of 780 pages of a boring slug pace content.
This was my all time favorite in the genre but sadly, it come to this.
Still though, the writer is incredibly innovative when coming up with new stuff, even though most of them aren't really new, but he makes them unique and very western, even though they are originally Chinese cultivation novel things.
I might continue this someday, but not sure when that day will be, right now I am just going back to the novels that are much more interesting and better written and will try to advance in their series.

I enjoyed this to the tune of 3 stars, but it was pretty rough to read this on the heels of something with much better writing. Trim the fluff and this could have been a 400-page book instead. I was fairly bored during multiple sections of the story.

"Show, don't tell," is one of those common criticisms that tends to be reductionist since both showing and telling have their place. But that criticism definitely applies to the recent books in the series. It feels like the balance is maybe 30% showing and 70% telling. Though even when it's showing, it's showing stuff that ultimately doesn't matter much to the plot.

There is a lot of subject-verb disagreement and some of the most horrific overuse of adverbs and adjectives I've seen. The author also has a tendency to put a concluding sentence at the start of a paragraph and then spend multiple lines afterward, providing support and redundancy. This might work well for academic papers, but it makes for boring fiction. I wish the author would set the scene first and then have the character draw a conclusion and let the reader do the same to foster engagement.

I feel like this series hasn't done a great job developing the supporting characters. Instead, we have a huge cast of window-dressing characters that really affect nothing other than convenient plot points. I worry whether I will give a single damn about anything this story offers after the Dominator arc ends. The lack of a quality antagonist really hinders my ability to care much at this point.

But until then, I'm still reading and fervently hoping that the story develops in a way that keeps me interested.

It's hard to keep this interesting as the series progresses. Zack's skills develop but he's still using basically the same skills he started with in book 1 but they've gotten stronger. It's hard to make the enemies sound challenging. Combats take several chapters and their resolution takes several chapters. Felt like I was hanging on for some key dialog bits that would only come along every 4 chapters or so to move the story forward.

Not as good as previous

Way too much time spent explaining skills and training very little story progression. There is so much more the author could do with the other characters but seems to only want to focus on endless explanations of Zacs skills

A good continuation of the series. Not great but good. Everything is pretty much the same as in the previous books. I hate to call it complaints so I will write a few of my "wish list" for the series going forward (I know it won't happen).

1. Get the secondary characters more involved. I like Thea. I like Billy. I like Emily and the demons. Spend a little more time on their cultivation and arcs.
2. Simplify the skills. The skills went from "chop" in the first book to some super weird title for the simplest skill. I don't mind having a few over the top skills but that seems like all Zack has anymore. Also a steadier progression of skills would be nice for a while. Zack makes sudden leaps in power. Then he has things that he doesn't want added to his build that he has to work around. Really, is he in charge of his cultivation? It seems like the system just throws him in a scenario and waits to see if he dies.
3. What is up with the system quest. Treating Zack like a slave I the end. The ruthless heavens are supposed to push people forward so they can gain power. Why does it seem like Zack is the only one pushed. Voids disciple is way stronger than Zack and didn't have to do anything to earn that power it seems like. How is the system okay with that?
4. Maybe a little more world building and less explanations about the system. At least half the book is Zack talking to other people about how the system works, the rules, work arounds, etc. I would like something I could visualize a little more.

Overall though we should know what we are getting into with the series by this point. There aren't any huge revelations that should make you think different about the series at this point. If you liked the series up until now, you still should.

While the main invasion arch was wrapped up nicely at the end of the previous book, the story continues with Zac dealing with a new threat involving the dominators, the remaining forces of earth as well as a slew of external smaller clans.

This new arch doesn't feel epic, at all, and it feels more like a level-up-side-quest taking place in a SciFi abandoned space station while fighting inter-dimensional space beasts. Meh! Whatever.

Agras and Thea receive a bit if attention with their stories and progression, but definitely not enough to make it interesting.

Even if the stakes may be greater than that of saving the new earth, it doesn't feel like it.

Overall a subpar entry (second lowest from all 6), as the author tries to steer the story in suitable direction after closing the main arch.

And the book just abruptly ends, mid-action scene, mid-quest, mid-dialogue. WTF! WHY?

I'll continue reading, hoping this chapter will be wrapped up quickly and Zac starts saving new planets and clashes with the sector's powers head-on. Soon!

Written by a 2-year old?

I've really been trying to enjoy this series; as you can tell, I'm reviewing book 6. But it's just getting harder and harder to do so.

The series starts pretty well, if not a little convoluted, with the arrival of the System - an all powerful AI who merges earth with several planets into a patchwork of landscapes and one huge Tutorial (where the survivors of the merger learn how to use their new classes and abilities, and most ultimately die). Great, I can understand that.

But that's really where the reasonable situations end. Our main character finds himself loading into the same exact location (bearing in mind earth is now easily 3x it's original size) and the systems only solution is to make him fight to the death against a creature far more powerful with no idea what's happening. It manages to transport everyone else to the Tutorial, but not Zach. That's fine though, because despite all odds he wins, and on his journey begins.

Cutting short the layering of the story, my issue with this book is this: it's ridiculously immature. Zach encounters absolutely no hardships that aren't minor, no matter how hard the author tries to make it sound like a big deal. He's basically invincible with powers no one else has ever heard of, and he's constantly finding that one thing that'll help him shore up whatever supposed weakness the author feels he has.

Not good with taking damage? Dual class based on death.
Low-grade human who can't 'cultivate' cosmic energy? A deep, intrinsic understanding of how it works so he can basically fake it.
Need a ridiculously rare flying treasure that even established societies don't have? Here's one just ripe for the taking.

And it goes on, and on, and on with Zach facing disaster after disaster you know he'll survive, all whilst achieving the unachievable.

Then there's the actual writing. The author uses convulted methods to explain difference; and more often than not it's a percentage. This, along with the word however being used in every paragraph, is tedious.

'the planet grew by 22%' - great, we didn't know how big it was before, so it's irrelevant.

'his strength was 78% improved' - wonderful, that doesn't mean anything when you're trying to understand base stats, efficiency of those stats, cosmic energy, Dao Seeds, Fragments, Blobs, Chunks, Slabs and more. It's just too much; you've got graded race, graded class, 10 different stats, efficiencies for all these stats, tons of skill descriptions that make you read about 10 pages of why they're not what he's looking for. It's just... It's effort reading this and understanding it.

TL;DR, it's a great idea implemented very badly.

So much filler

The books are entertaining, and this one is no exception. However, two things frustrate my desire to continue. The first is that there is so much navel gazing/inner monologue right in the middle of action and dialog. The second is that there is so little plot progression for a series where each book is quite long. We need less "let's explore the author's acid trip" and more legitimate progression. It really feels like it's being dragged out.

Fucking Fantastic

This is one of my favorite series. Every page is an adventure that makes life bearable. Absolutely love this writer and am constantly amazed at his mind. Dive in to something unique.

I enjoyed the other books in the series, but this one read more like a very long wikipedia entry than a compelling story. Maybe there are too many characters and too many powers to keep things going in an intelligible way without explaining everything... I kept getting bored and putting it down.

I enjoyed this book. Not so much encompassing cosmic stuff this go around, just solid growth and development. I didn't care much for the Mystic Realm stuff much. 👍🏾👍🏾

Nit: ends in the middle of a quest sequence. I guess when you are pushing out a couple books a year it doesn't matter as much aligning the books with proper story arcs, but it is awkward at the very least.

Mediocre. The series started out so promisingly, but it has steadily gone down hill. The books are way too long, have virtually no character development, have endless boring fights, and contain no real mystery as you know that Zac will win every fight. I kept waiting for any real back story about Zac’s mom or anything other than non stop fights. Heck, even Zac’s leveling up is boring and hard to follow. Who could possible keep track of all of his powers and skill and abilities?

First off, I love this series. This particular section is absolutely necessary to tie loose ends, but was a bit lackluster in retrospect. Though, that's only from comparing this arc to the hierarchy of the story at large, it's still great and trust me, it only gets better and better as the world (multiverse) and story continue to expand.

The author really is just starting and ending these books at completely random points with no apparent arc in mind. I'm starting to get a little bored with the MC just punching every problem in the face and the lack of structure is frustrating, but I keep going so clearly he's doing something right.

It was my most sincere hope we would get away from combat that takes 3,000 words to resolve five seconds of combat and start seeing him grow as a person and as a leader. Nope, the story has stopped progressing and it is becoming a chore to continue.

Dragging on

Honestly a lot of the last two books have felt like filler and it's starting to feel like it should have ended 2-3 books ago.

The first book of this series was entertaining and not super objectionable with porn/horror porn yucky stuuf like you must wade through/skim/skip in George RR Martin.

However I am more just skipping/skimming the books at this point. There is so much minutiae about systems in the rules of statistical stuuf and advantages/disadvantages he may or may not get if he chooses this skill or that. Super dull and boring- I may as well be reading a book on Fortran programming. Then mixed in is lame half baked philosophy insights/visions/learning profound moments which are almost as dull.

The actual fun action and character interaction is maybe twenty or thirty percent- I am doubtful I will read these books through.

There is some trite business service I recall years ago that would edit out mild language and sex in PG13 movies that catered towards Christian parents.

If there was a editor I could trust that would slice out the boring rule talk / insipid reflections in these books and sell it I would probably buy it and this book would be at least 50 percent smaller and twice as interesting… doubtful that would ever happen as the actual mildly entertaining stuff pretty average already making the effort not worth it…

So I guess if you have read the other one ( skimmed them) then you might continue…

Slow and mostly uninteresting

Pretty much same as the last book,  could have been condensed into 200 pages. Somewhat different theme; Zac now has a team like the Avengers go against word killer type strong enemies. No explanation on how they got so strong on a new world. I guess there might be an explanation buried in the hundreds of pages of fluff. I skimmed most of this boring book. The fight scenes have no continuity, Zac constantly has inner dialog during fights that causes a reader lose interest in what is happening. He's has so much inner dialog that even Zac loses track of his fight and gets injured because of it. He, as in the last book, overestimates his capabilities, underestimates his enemies  power during confrontations, but never comes up with a better strategy.  Oh, you can skip most of the many chapters about the small island, it's mostly useless. The same can be said for the many chapters taking up the fight with the Dominator, pre-Mystic Realm.
Another thing about this book is Zac's advancement is annoying slow and hard to understand, but it takes up several chapters with inner dialog.
The author needs an index of characters and abilities, it's nearly impossible to keep track of all that stuff.

I may give this series one more book. Things are getting a bit more convoluted and repetitive. Pages on pages of treasures, stats, classes, grades...it's boring. Each book being 700 pages is a challenge all its own. The books can get away with Zac just telling us what perks he wants and what it does. What treasures he is keeping and the rest trash. I don't need to know every item that is going to be in the auction when that isn't even a thing right now.

And I especially don't need it right in-between Thea and Billy chapters. Which by the way those need to be longer. I need a break from Zac. Not just the one off chapters from people who are going to die in the next chapter or someone we won't know until however many books down the road. Less stats, more character and interpersonal relationships development.

I get things are supposed to be very easy for Zac for XYZ reason but it is hard to root for someone who has been given a royal flush of a hand for almost every encounter. In fact it makes me want to see him FAIL for once or even die to let someone else shine for once.

Defiance of the Fall 6 by JF Brink is less weird than the earlier book, though it continues apace with the mining of potential threats. The Dominator plot is rapidly coming to a close, but in its place are the potential for Zac's mom, the Great Redeemer, the Cultists, and now the clan that wanted his mercantile license. I imagine, at some point, there will be some reckoning with the World Government and underworld council, and it may just occur through an alliance with the bloodline clans from the lab. Overall, the story progresses, but a lot of time is about the character builds. The fights feel less like filler and grinding in this book though, which is a positive. The character work is interesting, though the stereotypical "MC meets talented female scion of X clan" trope is still alive and well. The story is good, but amid all of the originality, there are threads of repetition. This makes it difficult for me to award this entry full marks.
