Getting over your ex is tough when he lives right down the hall…and tougher still when he’s in your bed.

He wasn’t Andrew when we dated–he was a curvy, black-haired beauty I locked eyes with in a club. I didn’t realize it was serious when we stayed up all night talking about music. Nor when he was spending more nights at my place than his own. We fell into a rhythm I missed completely, and as a percussionist, that’s embarrassing.

Our break-up wrecked me more than I’ve been willing to admit. But when my ex shows up on the porch in the middle of the night, soaked and homeless, I can’t turn him away. He needs a place to stay, a job–I can give him that, at least. But when he wants me to hold his hand during his first tattoo and cook meals with him, fall asleep holding each other…that’s different.

Can I put my fragile heart on the line again, knowing how it ended last time? Or do I owe it to myself to see if what we had the first time was just the overture?

Overture is the third book in the steamy Portland Symphony series, but can be enjoyed as a standalone. If you like early transition awkwardness, bad boys who learn to communicate, and a gender-affirming HEA, one-click this book now. CW for coming out gone wrong, implied deadnaming, and discussion of religious trauma.

This is a second-chance romance narrated by Evan, a cis guy who screwed up when his partner came out as a trans guy. Evan took too long to process Andrew’s coming out and is now brokenhearted and desperate to get Andrew back. Andrew, meanwhile, is going through it: he quit school, fought with his roommates, ran out when his sister asked him to be her bridesmaid, and could really use a place to stay and a friend. Evan tries hard to be that friend, but, this being a romance novel, naturally “friend” is not what either of them really wants. They end up living together and screwing up a few more times before they finally get it together and have some hot, sweet, gender-affirming sex. I really enjoyed all the details about Evan’s job as a percussionist in the Portland Symphony.

What a masterly written story! This is one of these stories you want to make a shout-out for, you want to tell everything about it, but at the same time, you can’t because you’d take away its beauty for other readers.

Evan is super flawed, sometimes even an (adorable) asshole, without realizing it. But oh my goodness I fell more and more in love with him. Sometimes he’s downright an emotional wreck.

So, Evan lives in a house with several other friends. Lately, he’s been sad, and melodramatic, as you can hear in the music he plays. It’s because he lost the love of his life, saying and doing the wrong things when he came out.
Evan is heartbroken and hitting himself on the head for what he did, he will never be the same.

Then, one night, his big love stands and his doorway, he’s drenched, homeless, and needs a place to stay.

Andrew is a trans man in his early transition and not everything went how he hoped it would, so he run, and with no other place to go than Evan’s he ends up at his door.

This story is too beautiful for words, I’m not capable to review more, without telling too much, so I’m keeping it by telling only a few big lines, but keep in mind there are thousands of important smaller ones.

Evan is trying hard to keep his heart protected, he wants to do good with Andrew, who’s keeping him at arm-length. Over time Andrew slowly opens up. But while Andrew is tentative getting closer and wants a one-night thing, to get over all the tension, Evan is scared his already shattered heart will never recover.

Evan is masterly portrayed, his characteristics are superb. The same for Andrew, I loved him dearly how he was pictured. I’m not gonna spoil about their characters just read it yourself!

Besides Evan and Andrew, there are other wonderful characters. There’s a lot of fuss in the house with all the housemates, it’s all quite realistic and hilarious.

Oh boy, read about the family things, I was floored!!

There are so many witty, snarky and funny comments, super realistic btw, it was amazing!
I was glued to the pages, the writing was absolutely captivating, it was fun and emotional, I laughed and also cried my eyes out with them.
What a way to end my reads of this year! Absolutely breathtakingly beautiful!

"Knowing he’s here. Close by. It just... feels right. Like finding out there were more keys on your instrument, to notes you’ve never heard before, yet knowing just what you want to play with them."

I just love all the characters in the Portland Symphony universe.
This is a sweet second chance romance. Evan is still recovering from a bad breakup when his ex shows up at his door needing a place to stay. We know his roommates and friends from the prior books and they all know his ex as well.
Andrew and Evan had a bad breakup but they are both still very much in love with each other. I loved how Andrews transition was discussed and how in any friend group or family it takes adjusting and acceptance but also some processing time. You don't want to lose that person in your life but also that person is still the same soul you know. Not all souls feel comfortable in the bodies they were placed in and not all social boxes fit everyone.
Evan had a lot of adjusting to do but he was working on it and he was anxious to keep him in his life.
There was such cute Colby and Chance updates too! Colby was definitely a big help with their relationship growth.
Also did you say you are working on Queer Shifters?! I need that!

This was really great! I really liked both Evan and Andrew as characters and I liked seeing their relationship rekindle. I will say that Harmony, book two in the series is still my favorite but that's honestly just because I am so in love with Hillary.

I noticed a couple people mention that there's not a lot of plot to this and I definitely agree but I don't know that it's necessarily a negative. Second chance romances are one of my favorite tropes and I live for a like past viewpoint where we get glimpses but I realize that wasn't really an option here with one of the characters being trans and very early in his transition. I loved seeing the glimpses from the secondary characters that had their own books prior and getting a glimpse into what the next book will be like. I especially liked the elements with Andrew's family and his church and as a queer atheist I'm always very hesitant about religion but this was a breath of fresh air.

My favorite of the Portland Symphony series so far! 🥰🥰 Overture was so beautiful! The relationship between Evan and Andrew is so sweet and they genuinely feel like soul mates. Evan’s love and care for Andrew is present throughout the entire book, even when he’s unsure of himself. Evan’s personal growth and relationship growth with Andrew is really special. His desire to protect Andrew is so strong, but his love is stronger- and sometimes that means letting Andrew protect himself. The acceptance from Andrew’s family and church was really nice to read, as well as the inclusion of his Hawaiian culture and the reference to two-spirit beings. I absolutely adored this book - Evan and Andrew have my heart.
**bonus! It was wonderful to see Chance and Colby again and the progression of their relationship 🥰🖤

Beautiful story

I want sure how much I was going to like this story when I first started reading but oh it was so worth it! I absolutely adored so much about this.

The way Evan changes and learns and tries so hard to take care of Andrew. He kinda bullied his way in at some points but he grew during the story and he grew on me more with every interaction.

It was really good reading about Drew's transition and the things he was going through even if it was through someone else's eyes. I thought it was respectfully and wonderfully written.

Reading about trans characters in general really hits me at the moment and it's not often I see stories that show the start of it so for me it was really good to see that portrayed. So much stuck with me and I totally understood a lot.

The intimate moments were sweet, hot and yet another way for Evan to learn about Drew and his thoughts and feelings and that was really great to see too.

This book got me in my emotions. Almost cried a few times. I laughed, I was frustrated, I was joyful, worried, just over all a really great book to me. Loved the whole thing, and it was so so worth reading.

Evan tried so very hard to be supportive, it's a shame both MCs didn't give him a bit more time to adjust the first time around, although this book couldn't have been written then. Personally he was a bit too hard on himself. Andrew's personal journey was written very well, and ended far more positively than he had ever hoped for, which was lovely. The (deadname) writing technique was a great idea. I haven't had the chance to read the earlier books in this series, so can definitely say that it works as a standalone.

I got this as an ARC from the author, but after noticing it was already out before I had read it, I decided to read it via Kindle Unlimited instead of using my ARC file.

My feelings on this one are a little all over the place. On one hand, it's a second-chance romance that didn't actually need to be a second chance - if the characters had just talked to each other at any point in the story, they would have both saved each other a lot of time. I didn't really connect with the romance that much because Evan is already in love with Andrew from the get-go and knows him so well already, I didn't get the "get to know each other and fall in love" kind of feelings I normally look for from romance books. It was more just waiting to see when they'd both get over themselves and get back together.

That said, the writing is really engaging and I felt entertained the whole book through. This book is witty and engaging and funny, and the sex scenes are top marks. The author also does such a good job avoiding misgendering Andrew by using his proper pronouns and real name in brackets for every instance where other pronouns or his old name are used.

I think this book can work well as a standalone, though reading the first book would add some good context as Colby and Chance have some good scenes in the background.

Lovely second chance

This one is a lovely second chance romance between Evan and Andrew who find their way back to one another after a breakup. It also focuses on early transition of Andrew and how Evan has handled it.

I don’t think I’ve read many stories about the early days of transition so this was a lovely one to read. I also think the friends group that lived in the same house was adorable but I wish I hadn’t picked up the second book since now I was feeling somewhat confused at times.

Then there’s Evan. I know I might be in the minority but I felt so bad for him at times. He’s been thrown a huge curveball and his friends don’t seem to see it at times. He gets almost picked upon and I just wanted to say to his friends that they were being stupid. Yes, he didn’t take the breakup well and not the things that let up to it but seeing almost no support for him felt wrong and left a little ashy taste in my mouth. Yes, there were moments when he did get it but especially Patrick rubbed me the wrong way.

This is a very sweet story of a couple in love trying to cope with big changes. Evan is a sweetheart, but he's also a bit of a doofus at times. He lets his confusion and fear cause him to screw things up over and over with his former lover, who has come out as a trans man. Andrew is strong in many ways, but he is early in his transition and feeling understandable anxiety. When he and Ev are together, no matter the situation, sparks fly between them.
This romance is sometimes sad and often funny. Ev and Drew are meant to be together, and it's wonderful to see how they work things out. I love Ev's internal monologue, whether he's being a jerk, a clown, or an emotional mess. I love both of these men, as well as the friends around them.
I haven't read the previous books in this series, but I enjoyed all the characters so much here, I'm adding their stories to my TBR list. This one is fabulous!

Slow burn, second chance during/after transition. I’d consider it a standalone, but you’ll be confused about some of the secondary and tertiary characters if you haven’t read the first two.

I really, really wanted to like this book since I loved the first two in the series, but I just didn’t connect with the characters at all. Too much inner monologue from Evan, not enough communication between Evan and Andrew. I didn’t skim, but around 35% I felt myself getting annoyed, wondering when the meat of the story was going to stand out. Maybe I’m too sleepy to make any sense of exactly what missed me with this one.

Romance done right!

Overture is now my favorite contemporary second-chance romance. Evan and Drew's story is an emotional roller-coaster, with no artificial "dark moment" garbage cluttering the story. This is well-written, funny, sexy, and brought me to tears.

are you looking for a queer second chance romance dealing with the complexities of transition?
read this if you enjoy: second chance romance and found family.
rep: queer MC; trans LI; largely queer supporting cast.
cw: coming out gone wrong; implied deadnaming; and discussion of religious trauma (provided by the author).

When Evan's ex Andrew turns up on his front doorstep in the middle of the night, Evan springs into action, returning to the role of caretaker and protector he felt so comfortable assuming during their past relationship. But this time around, Andrew is adamant he wants to stand on his own two feet, especially as he comes to terms with his gender identity and expression. Knowing they ended things badly in the past, Evan wants to make amends and do better the second time around, but can he get through to this 'new' Andrew? While I personally didn't connect with Evan as much as the previous narrators of the series, I would still highly recommend this book to any reader who is intrigued by the premise. The author always writes with sensitivity and nuance, and I loved the romance scenes between Evan and Andrew, which were handled with such care. I look forward to the continuation of the Portland Symphony.

CAWPILE: 4.9 (3*)
favourite aspect: As always, the found family vibes are excellent, as is the sensitive, nuanced queer representation, and I loved the cameos from the characters in the earlier Portland Symphony books.
a wish: For my personal preferences I would have liked there to have been a more active plotline in this instalment. I think it was the right choice overall not to do flashbacks of Andrew and Evan's past relationship, as you might usually find in second chance romance, but for me that meant the plot felt a bit too meandering at times.
disclaimer: I received an ARC of this book from the author, and I am voluntarily leaving this honest review.

Overture is a second-chance romance between a bi cis man and a trans man. It was cute and sweet but wasn't as nuanced as I'd hoped. This is the 3rd book in the series, and I haven't read the first two, so I wasn't as excited about the secondary plots or introduced to the other characters properly.

There were a lot of characters in this book, and outside of our main couple, I needed clarification on who was who and how they fit into the story. There was a roommate named Darren who had nothing meaningful to contribute and could've been entirely cut from the narrative. It made me think about how writing a scene with more than 4 characters is a challenge to keep them all active on the page, and most scenes that weren't just Andrew and Evan had more than 4 characters in them.

At the heart of it, I honestly didn't understand why Evan and Andrew broke up in the first place, especially since everything except for the epilogue was from Evan's point of view. (I'm a bi trans masc person.) If we'd watched Andrew just really go into himself and feel like he needed to break his relationship up for self-discovery, that might've been different, but instead, Evan said that he fucked things up when Andrew came out to him. I'm still not sure what happened. Same with what happened with Andrew's roommates and their initial reactions (which they eventually made up) that would make Andrew feel like he couldn't live there anymore and had to be homeless.

Also, yes, some bi people are TERFs (how? IDK, bigotry isn't logical, friends), but considering other trans people populate this friend's group, we know Evan wasn't a transphobe. It just seemed like the author wanted to write a trans coming out story, but since it wasn't from Andrew's POV, we actually didn't get the nuance or even really understand fully what was happening.

Writing this review makes me dislike this book more than I did when I read it. Overture was cute, and some of the sex was very hot.

This is the first story I’ve read by this author but it won’t be the last. The characters are so well described I felt these must be real. This is a second chance story with a few issues to add to their story.
Evan is guarding his heart. He and Andrew had a rough breakup but still have these feelings for each other. When Andrew shows up on Evan’s doorstep it starts the reconnection between these two. Evan has to adjust to the new Andrew and Andrew has to adjust to being somewhat independent. I found the characters both brought out strong emotions for what they are going through.

This entry into the Portland Symphony is a different kind of delight. It features two characters who were dating before one transitioned, and they broke up during that tumultuous time and find themselves living together in a group house.

Evan is a bit of an asshole, but he's got a heart of gold. He just can't help himself from saying the wrong thing All. The Time. I can relate, and while I wanted to smack the crap out of him at times, I totally got him. When Andrew moves into Evan's group house, it throws him for all kinds of loops and forces him to be real about why things didn't work out before.

Andrew is a hot mess, and between that and Evan's personality dysfunction, it seems like they'll never make things work. But this is a romance, and a great one at that. Little by little, cracks appear in the wall he's built between him and Evan, and it's a joy watching them creep closer together and learning to accept the parts of them that have changed and those that never will.

I will faithfully read every book London Price writes because they deal with gender in such messy and engaging ways and show me sides of romance I never get to see otherwise. Also? The sex scenes are smokin' hot. And that's half the reason we read romance to begin with.

A longer review may be coming on Before We Go Blog, but since I'm behind on my reviews, I'm dropping basic ones now.

Cute story. I enjoy reading about diverse kinds of love. Not sure how I feel about a cis author writing stories about trans characters and experiences though.
