BUGGIES, TRAINS, AND AUTOMOBILES * Shelley Shepard Gray Called home by family, John Miller and Ellie Coblentz are each looking for a way north from Pinecraft, Florida. With few options, they decide sharing the burden of travel must be the Lord’s plan for them. But can this bumpy, bad-weather journey home help them find their way into each other’s hearts, too?
STAR OF WONDER * Charlotte Hubbard When Raymond Overholt comes to Promise Lodge, hoping to sell the barnboard signs he’s painted with stars and Christmas messages, spirited young Mennonite Lizzie Zehr is intrigued. But any courtship between them will face fierce opposition from the bishop of Raymond’s Old Order community—unless someone can convince him that at the heart of faith lies love . . .
STARLIGHT EVERLASTING * Rosalind Lauer Newlyweds Rachel and Luke Coblentz can’t wait to celebrate their first Christmas together after years of courtship. An Amish Christmas Star is a sweet collection of feel-good novellas for the holiday season. I enjoyed all three stories, with the final novella of the book, about the newlyweds, being my favorite.
In Buggies, Trains, and Automobiles, the main characters face one trouble after another as they try to make it back to their hometowns. I felt bad for John and Ellie and frustrated with certain people who took advantage of them. I felt like their romance was rushed a bit toward love at the end, but it was still a sweet story.
In Star of Wonder, I liked the way these two main characters were drawn to each other fairly early in the story partly because of the fact that they were both different than the norm. There were some hurdles for Raymond and Lizzie to overcome and some decisions to be made, but it was an uplifting Christmas story.
In Starlight Everlasting, I connected with the main characters immediately and could feel how much they missed each other when they were apart. I liked that Rachel and Luke were kind and supportive toward each other and that they talked things through, which made for a strong beginning to their marriage. It was fun to see how devoted they were to Rachel’s family, as well. This was a great little novella.
I received a complimentary copy of this book. All opinions are my own.
An excellent set of three Christmas novellas written by three excellent Amish authors. I really enjoyed them all, despite the fact, Christmas is still a few months away! These stories will definitely set the mood for happy holidays. Each story was different from the others and it is hard to see the stories end. These would all be great characters for their own novel.
The first story is about two Amish people needing to get to certain destinations and their various rides give them definite problems along the way. As they travel together, despite many setbacks, they find their way.
The next story was about Raymond and Lizzie whose relationship is hindered by a Bishop whose own personal feelings cause problems for his congregation, including Raymond and Lizzie, of course.
The final story is about a newlywed couple whose life is disrupted by a job which keeps them apart from one another.
These are all great stories and so enjoyable to read. loved them all! I received a complimentary copy of this book. All thoughts are my own.
A wonderful collection of Christmas stories that reminds us of what Christmas is truly all about. The love that Jesus gave and still gives us if we accept. I loved all of these stories especially John and Ellie's story. I did have some trouble believing it though.. just not possible in today's world. Yes, there are still some good ppl out there but few and far between but I still loved reading it. Lizzie in Charlotte's story is quite the character. I found myself liking her as I turned each page. I was thinking that this one should be a novel. I hope Charlotte does eventually write one. I'd love to know Lizzie better. I loved Rosalind's story too. These stories all.have a couple of things in common a star and they offer hope. I give this book 5 stars for a job well done! I highly recommend it and it will get you in the Christmas spirit. I thoroughly enjoyed it My thanks for a copy of this book. I was NOT required to write a positive review. All opinions expressed are my own
I normally wouldn’t read Christmas stories this early, but, it’s been hot and humid and I honestly love the writing of the three authors in this collection. I thought I would have a favorite and I was pleasantly surprised to have enjoyed all of them equally. A lovely collection of Christmas stories that will put a smile on your face and the warmth of the season will put joy in your heart.
I received a copy of this book from the publisher through Netgalley. All opinions are my own.
I have to admit I have not read Amish fiction for quite some time. When it first became popular I read a lot of the books, but I found that they all became fairly formulaic and all felt the same. I took a chance on An Amish Christmas Star which contains three novellas by three different authors, and I enjoyed each and every one due to their entirely different slant from previous Amish fiction.
Buggies, Trains and Automobiles was my favorite of the three written by Shelley Shepard Gray. Called home by family, John Miller and Ellie Coblentz are each looking for a way north from Florida. With few options, they decide to work together to try to get home. Between missed busses, broken buggies, vans whose driver kicked them off, this comical, yet sweet read, saw both John and Ellie reaching home in their Ohio towns and finding that they had more in common than they thought.
Star of Wonder by Charlotte Hubbard focuses on Raymond Overholt who is trying to find his vocation in life. He loves art so places some of his Christmas works at a store where Lizzie Zehr works. But Raymond is Old Order Amish and Lizzie is Mennonite. Will they be able to build their relationship, or will Raymond's Old Order Bishop tear them apart and stop Raymond's art as he emphasizes rules not love?
Starlight Everlasting y Rosalind Lauer, a new-to-me author, sees newlyweds Rachel and Luke Coblentz living separate lives in two different towns as Luke can only find work in a town two hours away. Meanwhile Rachel is managing a Christmas store where they live. Weekends are not enough for either of them. What kind of compromise can they find that will let them live as a couple in their hometown? Will God provide a way they never expect?
Three different stories all filled with wonderful Christmas faith that were wonderfully enjoyable.
An Amish Christmas Star is a collection of three novellas focusing on faith, family and love around Christmas. The stories are all unique, the characters strong Amish facing challenges and the stresses of living in an English world.
Shelley Shepard Gray's "Buggies, Trains, and Automobiles" was a very entertaining story as we traveled with John and Ellie trying to make it home for the holidays, in the case of Ellie, or for John home to see his dying father one last time. The story is very well-written and you endure all of the hardships and unpleasant people with Ellie and John. By the end of the story you want to spend more time with Ellie and John and see where life takes them next.
Star of Wonder, by Charlotte Hubbard, is an unusual novella. It is the story of strong-willed Mennonite Lizzie and Amish Raymond who does not wish to be a dairy farmer as the rest of his family. Lizzie and Raymond meet at the story where Lizzie works, as Raymond tries to convince the story proprietor to sell his hand-crafted stars with Christmas messages. Raymond not only sells his stars at the store but obtains a job working there with Lizzie, and their relationship blooms. The relationship between Raymond, his family and the Old Order bishop creates a story in itself, with the bishop's change of heart being key to the story. The ending is great, as all works out well for this couple.
Starlight Everlasting by Rosalind Lauer finds Rachel and Luke Coblentz, newly married yet separated as Luke must travel to a new town to find work, since he possesses none of the skills required to find work among his Amish neighbors. Rachel manages her Aunt's Christmas shop and takes care of her younger siblings, as her mother has passed away. Luke makes it home as much as possible, however when it is learned that they cannot be together for Thanksgiving or Christmas, Rachel travels to be with Luke, leaving her own family for the holidays. The situation makes both Luke and Rachel realize their home is with their family and friends in Joyful River. Their fortune turns and Luke is able to leave his job, return to Joyful River to be with Rachel and all works out well for them as they start their life together.
These are heart-warming stories full of hope, perseverance, love and faith -- messages needed for today. I recommend reading these stories any time of the year, not just Christmas.
I am slow getting into the Christmas Spirit this year. Wasn't sure I was going to but, combine two of my favorite Amish Fiction Authors, Shelley Shepard Gray and Charlotte Hubbard into a Christmas book, and that did it. This is a first for me reading Rosalind Lauer but it will not be the last! All three of these Christmas stories in "An Amish Christmas Star" will warm you and get you in the Christmas mood.
I'm an avid Amish Fiction reader, lived close to Pinecraft and frequent Holmes County, OH so having "Buggies, Trains and Automobiles" in it's authentic depiction is refreshing. Following John Miller & Ellie Coblentz on their journey north from Pinecraft to Ohio may have been bumpy for them, but not for me. I found myself fully involved in their somewhat funny journey. And I found myself fully involved with that difficult van driver of theirs. I'd sure like to have a word with him...
There isn't a Promise Lodge book of Charlotte's that I haven't read. I feel like all those in Promise Lodge are extended family and Raymond and Lizzie in Charlotte's "Star of Wonder" became no exception. Reading as their relationship blooms like a Christmas Cactus was wonderful. Lizzie is unique in her own way and is Mennonite while Raymond is Old Order Amish. When the persistant Old Order Bishop from Coldstream comes to Promise Lodge to drag Raymond back with him... well, I won't mention if he succeeded or not.
Can you imagine being a young newly married couple living with your father and six siblings? OY, I cannot. But in Rosalind's "Starlight Everlasting", newlyweds Luke & Rachel do. Having to take a job two hours from home separates the young married couple making it hard on them and their relationship. Very inspiring story in how they handled this separation and test on their marriage. Although I loved this young couple, I will admit that little brother Truman could very well be my favorite character in this story.
There is so much more I would like to tell you about these stories however because of the stories, you should read and experience it yourself. You won't be sorry. Plus, now that I am in the Christmas spirit, I have to go decorate... Happy Reading!
Three sweet new Christmas novels from well-known Amish authors.
My review … “Buggies, Trains, and Automobiles” by Shelley Shepard Gray finds two Amish strangers on December 20th traveling from Pinecraft, Florida to Holmes County, Ohio in a van driven by a grumpy driver who leaves them at a closed filling station in Jacksonville, Florida. Ellis tends to be bossy and John complains a bit too much. And the story is about how these two people DO get to Ohio and find they just might get along for longer than the trip. Rating: 3 stars
The lack of concern by an Amish man and woman, unmarried, traveling alone together is never even proposed. And you *know* there would have been. It was a cute, nice story but not one I would read again.
“Star of Wonder” by Charlotte Hubbard tells the story of an old-ordered Amish young man who dislikes farming and loves creating Christmas plaques with stars and meaningful Christmas messages. He hopes the bulk store will allow him to sell the signs. If he doesn’t make some money with his art, he will *have* to give it up and farm.
Working at this bulk store is Mennonite Lizzie Zehr and her character is why I was glad when I completed this novella. If she had a nickname, it would be “Ditzy Lizzie”. She just bounced all over the place, forgetful, and basically creating havoc more than anyone you are likely to meet. Of course, these two young people fall in love but a solution is not easy since he is old-order Amish and she is Mennonite. Rating: 3 stars
Lizzie was just too “ditzy” for me. Like the previous novella, okay for one read but won’t be reading this one again.
“Starlight Everlasting” by Rosalind Lauer begins with newlyweds who are so looking forward to their first Christmas together. Luke has had to take a factory job that allows him to only be home on weekends. When Luke is told as the newest person on the job he has to work Christmas Day, how does he tell Rachel? He hates only being able to come home on weekends. But without his job … Rating: 5 stars
I enjoyed this story. A lot. Perhaps because as newlyweds, my husband and I were separated due to his “job”, except he was gone 21 days, home 3-4 days, and gone again. You don’t like it but you deal with it. And that’s what this young couple does. And when they give it to God, wonderful things do happen at Christmas.
I received a complimentary e-ARC copy of“An Amish Christmas Star” via NetGalley from the publisher, Kensington Books, Kensington. A positive review was not required; the opinions expressed in this review are entirely my own.
Overall rating: 3.7 stars rounded to 4 stars on sites that only show whole numbers. #AnAmishChristmasStar #NetGalley

Three short stories by three new-to-me authors of Amish fiction. Enjoyed the wholesome stories about families and faith. Look forward to reading more by these authors.
Great set of reads! Perfect to get into the Christmas spirit. Revisited characters from previous books from each author. The development of the characters and faith content was right on. A very easy and quick read. Refreshing!
Very enjoyable read. Puts you in the spirit of Christmas. The first novella is by Shelley Shepard Gray called BUGGIES, TRAINS, AND AUTOMOBILES . This is a story about two people not knowing each other trying to get home to family for different reasons. John Miller needs to get home is father is dying. Ellie Coblentz needs to care for her Aunt. As they begin there travel Ellie loses her seat do to a problem with a mix up on seating arrangement. When John meets Ellie they find away to get home but there are many problems along the way. Beautiful story funny and inspirational. Second novella STAR OF WONDER by Charlotte Hubbard. This is a story about Raymond Overholt who is Amish and comes to Promise Lodge to sell his beautiful Barn signs with messages of Christmas and Stars. He meets Lizzie Zehr who is Mennonite who works and also lives there. I loved the characters and it is funny but beautiful. The last novella STARLIGHT EVERLASTING is by Rosalind Lauer. This one is about Newlyweds Rachel and Luke Coblentz. Rachael lost her mother and helps care for her brothers and sisters to help her father. Luke can not find a job and works away and comes home on weekends. This is a touching story about Faith and love and determination. I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own."
This book is awesome. All three authors are amazing. The characters are well written and you feel like you're a part of the stories.....You don't want them to end because the people in the book feels like "friends." The theme of the book is following your "Heart's Star" to lead you home.
The first book Buggies, Trains, and Automobiles by Shelley Shepard Gray is about how God's delays are sometimes His way of protecting us. John Miller and Ellie Coblentz are both trying to get home for Christmas and decide to travel together. They encounter many delays on the way and get very frustrated. Sometimes we all get flustered when things happen and our plans are delayed, but sometimes those delays are really for our own safety. God sees our route before we do and He sends a "Star" to guide our way.
The Second book Star of Wonder by Charlotte Hubbard is about following your heart no matter what other people think. Raymond Overholt has other dreams for his life than his dad has for him. His dad is Old Order Amish and does every thing by the book and doesn't understand why his son is being rebellious. Raymond makes wooden signs with "stars" and inspiring messages. He leaves home to sell his signs. Sometimes we might have a different opinion of what someone does with their lives, but the choice should be theirs to make. Raymond meets the Spunky Lizzie Zehr. She's Mennonite and their rules are not as strict as the Amish. It's love at first sight for them. When she meets his family sparks fly...... Raymond's Old Order Bishop Obadiah is a no nonsense by the book Amish person, but something happens to him that might change his way of thinking. Sometimes God sends us a "Star" to shed light on the way we're living our lives.
The third book Starlight Everlasting by Rosalind Lauer is about making sacrifices for other people. Luke Coblentz leaves his cozy town of Joyful River to find work.....His wife Rachel is heartbroken. Life sometimes forces us to do things we would rather not do, but we do them because we love our family. She takes over her aunt's store and renames it "Star of Wonder." The theme of the store is the "Christmas Star Lighting The Way." Truman, Rachel brother, is fascinated with "Stars." He points out the "Christmas Star" in the sky. God often sends a "Star" to light our paths so we don't get lost.
To see if John and Ellie's delays lead them to a "Star" that guides them home; To see if Raymond and Lizzie find a way to be together.... to see if Bishop Obadiah and Raymond's dad see the "Starlight;" To see if Luke & Rachel's "Star" light the path back to each other......... You have to read the book. Happy Reading!

They include: "Buggies, Trains, and Automobiles" by Shelley Shepard Gray, "Star of Wonder" by Charlotte Hubbard, and "Starlight Everlasting" by Rosalind Lauer. The last story in this collection is STARLIGHT EVERLASTING by Rosalind Lauer.
This is the story of Newlyweds, Rachel and Luke Coblentz. Luke is forced to travel out of town for work and he and Rachel only have two days a week together. Their desire is to spend their first Thanksgiving and Christmas together as husband and wife.

All 3 stories in this book are so well done. The first story, Buggies, trains and Automobiles by Shelly Shepard Gray is about John Miller and Ellie Coblentz. During a trip to Pinecraft Florida, they had to find a way back home, so decided to share a ride.. and what a ride it was..
The next, Star of Wonder by Charlotte Hubbard, was Raymond Overholt and Lizzie Zehr wild love story. Can their love survive the bishop?
The last, Starlight Everlasting by Rosealind Lauer, was the story of newlyweds Rachel and Luke Cobientz. This was a tear jerker for me.. have some tissues..
Each of these stories touched my heart in their own way.. I really enjoyed each story a lot.. I was gifted and early book for my honest opinion and I would recommend this great book..
An Amish Christmas Star Shelley Shepard Gray; Charlotte Hubbard; Rosalind Lauer 4 stars BUGGIES, TRAINS, AND AUTOMOBILES by Shelley Shepard Gray John and Ellie are both trying to get home for very different reasons. They have a very eventful and comical journey, meeting up with some wonderful strangers, as well as some truly awful ones. This humorous tale is a much different Amish story than most. I thoroughly enjoyed it.
1 star STAR OF WONDER by Charlotte Hubbard is the second book in this three story book. I did not like this novella at all. I ended up just not finishing it.
4 stars STARLIGHT EVERLASTING by Rosalind Lauer I loved everything about this book, particularly the newlyweds Rachel and Luke. They struggle to help her widowed father and siblings while Luke has to work in another city. This is just a fantastic novella of love, faith, friendship and Christmas peace.
I received a complimentary copy of this book from the publisher and Netgalley.

Everyone if the stories in this book is beautifully written by some of my favorite Amish writers (Shelley Shepard Gray, Charlotte Hubbard, and Rosalind Lauer).

I loved all three of these stories. If you like Amish stories you so love these. The Christmas Star is the main thing in these stories. This is VERY GOOD READ. These stories are about difficult decisions they have to make at Christmas.
Lovely stories about love and Christmas! My favorite was the final story about a married couple seeking God's will and the final leap of faith. Must read!
Received this ARC through publisher and opinion of book it strictly my own. Three Christmas stories that will delight Amish book readers come the holidays.
I love books with several authors together writing in their unique style to give readers a wonderful collection for all to enjoy. I love that a star is the focal point in each story as they celebrate Christmas.
BUGGIES, TRAINS, AND AUTOMOBILES by SHELLEY SHEPARD GRAY
I was so excited to be on the journey with John and Ellie. They meet under circumstances beyond their control. Each are trying to get home to someone who needs help. John is going to see his father who doesn’t have long to live. They haven’t spoken in years, which will be difficult for John. Ellie is going to take care of her grandmother. They look out for each other as they are removed from a van where a very unpleasant driver was.
I loved their adventure on the train. I never thought about motion sickness on a train, but I can see how that would be a problem for some. As the train reaches the end for them, they still need to find other transportation to get to their final destination.
The story is filled with meeting kind people as they travel and find that they both seem to get along with each other. The ending is sweet and I loved how the author illustrated forgiveness. I loved how two strangers trust God and learn that He had a plan for them to meet and change their lives.
STAR OF WONDER BY CHARLOTTE HUBBARD
This story gave me a better insight into the Mennonites. Raymond wants to sell his signs and finds the perfect place at a store. But his parents aren’t sure it is a good idea since the Mennonites don’t follow their beliefs. I have always thought about how difficult it would be to be shunned by family and the community. Mennonites allow their members to confess their sins and be forgiven. Raymond is ready to move out on his own and hopes he gets the chance to do so while selling his signs and working at the store.
Lizzie sure was interested in Raymond right away. She almost seemed pushy at times but her heart is pure and I liked how she encouraged Raymond. I love that she gets a chance to bake cookies again after leaving the bakery she used to work at. She has a gift for being fast and making the cookies so tasty. The significance of the star in this story is very emotional. Lizzie is reminded that “like a star we shine in our own special way.” What a great reminder that we may be different but we all have something that makes us special in God’s eyes.
As feelings growing stronger between the two, Raymond starts to feel pressure from his dad. He is not in agreement that Raymond should be seeing Lizzie and thinks Raymond could be shunned if he continues his relationship with her. The story is a beautiful illustration of following God and giving grace to those who are in need. I loved the transformation of one character and it filled me with hope. “You never can tell which little things we do and say will lead someone to follow God’s star.”
STARLIGHT EVERLASTING BY ROSALIND LAUER
Rachel and Luke are newlyweds and are finding it hard to be together. Luke’s job keeps him away from home during the week. Each time they are together you can feel the love between them. As Christmas draws near, Luke finds out that he has to work during the holidays. He is having a hard time working at the factory and pray that soon he will find a job closer to home.
This story is a look at faith and how we need to trust God. He knows the desires of our heart and wants His children to turn to Him with our needs. Luke and Rachel are waiting for the right job to come along so Luke won’t have to be away from home. What a blessing they receive and are surprised by the outpouring of support from family and friends. The ending is a wonderful blessing that finds Luke and Rachel feeling happy and excited for the future.
Buggies, Trains, and Automobiles by Shelley Shepard Gray
Ellie Coblentz is called back from vacation to help her Grandmommi. John Miller receives a phone call that his father, from whom he has been estranged for almost fifteen years, is on his deathbed. John needs to travel quickly if he wants to get to the nursing home before his father passes, something he is not sure he wants to do. It is a few days before Christmas when the two meet at a bulletin board searching for ways to get from Pinecraft, Florida, to Holmes County, Ohio, in bad weather. As strangers, they make for unusual travel partners, but God has a way of bringing them together under the difficult travel circumstances as they find themselves stranded several times along the journey. In addition to some crazy hired drivers, they also encounter some very kind and helpful people who think helping others is a wonderful way to celebrate Christmas. This is a sweet Christmas story that I think I would enjoy rereading.
Star of Wonder by Charlotte Hubbard
Lizzie Zehr is a young Mennonite woman with a flamboyant, creative flair. Raised by her two sisters, first one who passed with MS, and then the other who was a talented, but perfectionist baker, Lizzie has felt stifled by them. She finds freedom in a job in a new bulk store in Promise Lodge. A lot of the Old Order Amish have moved there to be away from a mean-spirited Bishop.
Raymond Overholt is another creative who travels from Coldstream to Promise Lodge. His goal, however, is to sell art he has created from barnboard wood decorated with Christmas messages and stars. He just doesn’t enjoy or fit in well in his family’s dairy farm. So when offered a seasonal temporary job at the store in Promise Lodge, he accepts.
If Lizzie and Raymond have a future together, there will be a lot of opposition to overcome arising from the Amish leaders in Coldstream and Raymond’s family. It will take a change of heart by the leadership there and perhaps a change of circumstances. It will take a Christmas miracle!
Starlight Everlasting by Rosalind Lauer
Rachel and Luke Coblentz began courting when they were quite young. They kept putting off their wedding in hopes that Rachel’s mother would recover from cancer and be able to be a part of the ceremony. Unfortunately, she passed away, leaving the family with seven children and a mountain of medical bills. As young marrieds, they feel an obligation to pay off the debts, but Luke is unable to find a job in the town of Joyful River. He gets a low paying factory job in Maple Run, but that means he and Rachel must live apart 5 days out of the week. This becomes a crisis for the young couple when Luke is required to work on both Thanksgiving and Christmas. Meanwhile, Rachel has restored an abandoned Christmas store in Joyful River. It is doing quite well, and she is able to help with the care of her younger siblings, but she misses Luke so much! They reach out to God and rely on him to give them the wisdom and faith required to help them through this difficult season.
Truman is one of Rachel’s young siblings, and I came to love him as much as Rachel does. As Rachel describes him, he is “odd.” He doesn’t understand social signals, but he “has a good heart.” Although bullied, he doesn’t retaliate. He is very smart and memorizes things quickly.
I enjoyed all of these novellas. They were able to tell a whole story in less space than a novel, and I didn’t feel that anything was missing.
I received a complimentary copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
