"Upgrade from Bholi to Badass: Your Guide to the Nuances of Transformation" by Krishna Mahathi was a delightful and hilarious read, especially for someone like me, who's currently navigating the wild jungle of self-worth.
Krishna Mahathi really gets us women. You know those rant sessions with your girl gang where we complain about how society expects us to be as docile as a houseplant? Well, this book feels like one long, satisfying rant—except with actual solutions. When a woman decides to break out of the 'bholi' mold and aim for 'badass,' she's often labeled as a rebel, guilty, or even scandalous. This book is the ultimate pep talk for anyone needing that push to transform their life.
My absolute favorite part? Each chapter kicks off with a Hindi song that could make even a stone-hearted person feel a twinge of warmth and courage. And the Hindi phrases sprinkled throughout? It’s like the book is winking at you, saying, "You got this, behen."
It's a super short read, which means you can devour it in one sitting, probably with a chai in hand. The writing style is so charming and funny that you’ll find yourself giggling and nodding along.
I wholeheartedly recommend this book to all my fellow girlies who need a boost and a laugh. And let’s not leave the men out—this book is an enlightening read for them too. So, grab a copy, embrace your inner badass, and enjoy the ride!
Krishna Mahathi mentioned that this book took ten minutes to conceptualize, a whole seven years were spent writing. As the title suggests this book was all about the title of bholi to badass for a woman.
~ The book cover was undoubtedly beautiful and matched the vibes of the book. I really loved the ideas and thoughts of this book. The main point reflected through it was guidance to women for being strong and powerful.
~ Each chapter started with hindi song lyrics from Bollywood. This was both an interesting and motivational read. The language was the blend of Hindi and English, this wasn't enjoyable for me. To read typical Hindi words in between the English book didn't suit my reading choice.
~ The chapters I enjoyed were Bebasi ka bhay and Bharosa or bhav. My favourite line from the book was Savor life, enjoy discovering your unique identity and stop worrying about what's difficult or different in you.
~ This book was written by women, about women and for women.
~ If you are looking for a different and crispy read do check the blurb of this book. Despite the writing style, the thoughts mentioned in the book were deep and thoughtful.

-Claiming your life like a badass- Review of ‘Upgrade from Bholi to Badass- your guide to the nuances of transformation- by Krishna Mahathi 🖋️📖
In Indian society, girls are conditioned to become ‘bholi’, writes Mahathi. But when a woman tries to reclaim her life and purpose of being, she faces obstacles to this road of discovery. Family and society, directly and indirectly, want to keep her in the bracket of ‘bholi’, trying to keep her from discovering a new sense of self. Mahathi brings a treatise on how to discover yourself and your sense of purpose for girls and women of all age.
Mahathi has written this book to help the women hold themselves together in the times of distress. She credits her ‘behens’, the amazing women she has met over the years with the wisdom she has gained from them.
Author claims that it took just ten minute to conceptualise this book but seven years to bring it to fruition. Starting with lines from songs of Hindi film industry, every chapter helps women to discover themselves a little more.
She writes- ‘I have come to believe that all our gallant gods-when they told us not to retaliate to wrongs only meant that we must resist getting sucked into mindless drama. Justice need not be orchestrated within a constrictive framework of time and methodology. There are lots of forces that will come to your aid. Lots of things in life are traps that make you focus on things you have no control over. Or rather, things that are not for you to fix. It's also a fact that love is not always a pleasant proposition. You cannot give from hollowness and connect with another soul with sketchy stickum.’
My only grouse with the book is excessive use of Hindi words that don’t fit in the format of the book. Have a look- ‘The bojhal peeda pariksha perplexity complex, though necessary, need not be a limitation to your story. Bulandi works differently my friends, I will show you how. There is another way to deal with the bhaari ehsaas. We can compose our way to karishma and credibility through this camouflage of confusion.’
Do read it if you want to know how to discover your original self.
Masterfully and soulfully crafted by Dr. Krishna Mahathi, the book titled “Upgrade from Bholi to Badass” is highly motivating and inspiring book. “Wisdom coming from a certain species makes several others very uncomfortable and this is the challenge for women in many "desh-dhartis" today. Many face barriers to acknowledging or accepting the voice of reason- even their own, unfortunately.” - from book
The author has given her heart and mind to craft this book, the pages of this book are filled with her wisdom and inspiration for many (जी लो अपनी ज़िन्दगी) I wish I could give more than 5 stars for such amazing writing. It perplexes me how women in India are conditioned and brought up in a certain way to ensure that their personality borders on being mild, eager-to-please, and have a show of innocence, what we call ‘Bholi’ in vernacular language. Somehow I feel, in order to make women more agreeable, we are refrained from inculcating any fighting spirit or go-getter personality in order to maintain a fake semblance of peace in the house.
The author has captured the essence of the journey undertaken as a girl to a woman, from being a ‘Bholi’ to a ‘Badass’. The author did not mince any words and have sensitively highlighted the issue with the Indian society how they love to bracket and temper a woman to remain ‘bholi’ which deprives us to learn the ropes of dealing with the hardships of life.
The author has given a roadmap in this book to help women become their own champion instead of depending on support. It is very important to find your individuality and broaden your horizon to understand the expanse of how life works and how to survive and do well. This book is a short 66-page read interspersed with a few poems and strong words of wisdom to empower the transition from a ‘Bholi’ to a ‘Badass’. I liked the literary content which is a mix of formal and colloquial language to connect and become familiar with the mass audience.
Overall, this book is a good one-time read to get a shot of motivation and take the reigns of your life in your own hands especially as a woman in a society who has no dearth of societal expectations attached to her life.
For women, the book "Upgrade from Bholi to Badass" written by Krishna Mahathi is a must-read. It has a really uplifting and motivating effect. It seemed to me that the author was a really talented writer. The manner in which she utilized Hindi words as a hook to attach you to the point that she was making was the reason that she succeeded in getting to capture my attention. I am of the opinion that she has crafted an ideal book for females. This book is an excellent stepping stone that will help women in India become aware of the lessons that they have been taught by society as well as the obstacles that they face and how they may overcome them. The manner that each chapter begins with a dialogue or a phrase from a poem is something that I really enjoy. Not only does it establish the mood for the chapter, but it also makes you excited to read it. Having said that, I experienced occasions in which the utilization of Hindi terms appeared to be redundant. This is the first book that I have read that follows a writing style that combines Hindi and English narrative, and while I do like this style of writing, I cannot say that I have become a fan of this style.
People who are familiar with Hindi and are looking for a boost of motivation will find it to be a decent short read overall.
Candid, thought-provoking and relatable, this book is as quirky as the title and the cover is. Krishna Mahathi's ‘Upgrade from bholi to badass’ is a must-read for all the women out there. The book explores a wide range of topics that are relatable to women. It delves into practical and thought-provoking conversations that many women would love to engage in. The author's approach is direct and relatable, making it an engaging read for any woman.
Krishna's writing style is captivating with its crisp descriptive narrative, encouraging readers to pause and reflect on relatable situations. The incorporation of Hinglish language adds an extra layer of relatability for the readers, truly transforming their reading experience in profound ways.
With each chapter, we grow as a person, there is a shift in our perspective. The way she looks at the situations, the way she asks readers to cherish the people in their lives, and the way she drops the truth bombs most subtly and interestingly. Honest, Raw and engaging, this book feels like talking to a friend, addressing the topics we would never discuss.
It is a light, friendly read you can count on every time you seek inspiration. Step into a transformative journey with this beautiful book.
Women are often stereotyped as naive, fearful, fragile, and Bholi. This book guides women on a journey from being Bholi to becoming Badass, using a series of terms and real-life examples.
Have you ever been told you’re too young to face the world and that your innocence will be devoured once you step outside your house? This book explains how to overcome such challenges, be brave, and deal with stereotypical thoughts.
The seven steps—Bechaini, Burayi ka Bhay, Bebasi ka Bhay, Bewakoofi ka Bhay, Beinsaafi ka Bhay, Bhranthi ka Bhay, and Bharosa aur Bhav—for transformation are explained with insightful examples and perspectives. The transformative journey combines sensitivity with savvy, turning a timid woman into a confident one.
While the book teaches how to upgrade oneself, it also provides valuable lessons on breaking barriers and understanding how to react in various situations.
The author’s writing style is incredible as she connects deeply with her readers, reflecting the thoughts and experiences of many women trying to express themselves and be heard. This book celebrates fearless women and inspires them to embrace their inner badass.
Women are strong and capable, yet we face challenges regarding our rights. Even as equals to men, societal norms often restrain us. We behenas have powerful voices, and despite our emotions, we can stand up, give, challenge, and forgive remarkably.
This book amplifies the inner voice of every woman, a voice we often keep silent. Divided into seven distinct sections, it delves into themes such as trust, injustice, ignorance, and malevolence. The author reflects on her journey, inspired by the remarkable women she met along the way. This book serves as a reminder of the importance of giving women the care and support they deserve, often not readily available to them. It aims to help women discover their own strengths and cultivate self-love.
Each chapter opens with a Hindi poem, encouraging women to recognize their inner strength and take control of their lives. It pays tribute to their hard work and determination. While the theme was admirable, I felt the Hindi phrases were awkwardly inserted and disrupted the flow, making the writing less effective.
This book is about the deep conversations women want to have but often disguise as small talk. It explores the journey of self-discovery, addressing unexpected changes in attitudes and perceptions. It aims to help women find inner strength during challenging times, encouraging them to celebrate their personal growth.
"Upgrade from Bholi to Badass" by Krishna Mahathi is a heartfelt and relatable book for women seeking empowerment. The author uses humor and empathy to address societal expectations and the transformation from being docile ('bholi') to confident ('badass'). The mix of Hindi and English makes the content relatable, though it might be challenging for non-Hindi speakers. Each chapter starts with a Hindi song, adding warmth and encouragement.
Overall, the book offers practical advice and inspiration, but the blend of languages may hinder some readers. It's a short and engaging read, ideal for those looking for a motivational boost. I give it 3 stars for its valuable insights and relatable content, though the language choice could be more accessible.
Upgrade from Bholi to Badass- your guide to the nuances of transformation by Krishna Mahathi was one book I thoroughly enjoyed.
The author talks about things which as a woman I always talk about in rant sessions with my "behens". I've always seen how our society expects us women to be docile and voiceless. But when a woman stands up against this and actually tries to make something out of her life, she is considered to be so wrong. A woman is made to feel guilty and even characterless.
The author helps to solidify the will of women who recognise the need of this transformation.
The best part for me was how she started the chapters with hindi songs of warmth and courage. The hindi phrases here and there made me connect with the book more.
It's an extremely short read but also an important and enjoyable one. The writing style will charm you over as much as the content will do.
I would recommend this book to all my behens for sure, but also to the men in my life.

Moreover, it celebrates the process of self-reinvention, portraying it as an adventure rather than a burden. This perspective encourages readers to embrace change and growth enthusiastically.
Ultimately, this book champions women as they navigate the complexities of their inner worlds, inspiring them to savor the expansion of their minds and the richness of their journeys.

We all know atleast in our Indian society how difficult it is for a woman to go from Bholi to becoming a badass. The author has explained in a very simple and easy way as to how our Indian society refrains a woman to become a badass from bholi. The author has met several women in her journey who has shared this wisdom with her and that has helped her a lot to complete this book. It is a short but impactful read I would say. Every topic in this book starts with Hindi poem or Shayri I would say which I think can be a miss for a lot of people who don’t feel comfortable with reading Hindi lines. The author is trying to explain this “We may encounter many defeats but we must not be defeated." — Maya Angelou

This book is divided into 7 parts all titled in Hindi begining with a few lines taken from popular Bollywood movie songs which will help women discover a big more about themselves.
