Folk Lore #2

Dove le volpi cacciano con i lupi

Rate this book
Yevhen: Guardia forestale. Lupo mannaro. Soffocato dalle regole del branco.
Radek. Moccioso dai capelli rossi, furbo come una volpe. Cambiante.

K.A. Merikan’s Where Foxes Hunt with Wolves is the second book in their Folk Lore series. Taking place in the same village as the first novel, Where the Devil Says Goodnight, some of the characters are familiar, but you won’t have any trouble reading them independently.

I do, however, recommend doing the books in this series in audio.

Wyatt Baker does an absolutely stunning job with these stories. His accents are flawless, and he provides wonderful variety in this extensive cast of characters. Mr. Baker enhances the darkness of the mood, the spookiness of the surroundings... his performance just brings the whole experience to life.

Filled with folklore and mystery, the Merikans never pull their punches, and Where Foxes Hunt with Wolves is dark and dramatic and kinky and bloody. Yep, pretty much everything we love about their novels.

I'm loving these unique characters, and each of the stories has had some intriguing (and creative) family drama. Hurt/comfort to the nth degree for both of the MCs, and the fast pace never slows down. Very exciting!

3.5 StarsThe first book in this series is still my favorite, the second one didn't hook me as much as the first. I thought this talk about werewolves not being gay was a lot of. I'm a fan of the Bennett pack from wolfsong and I disapproved of this ridiculously homophobic pack in this book. Radek and Yev are a nice couple, but not as good as Emil and Adam

Genre: Paranormal Romance
Type: Standalone Book 2 of Folk Lore Series
POV: Third Person

Radek Nowak wished he could just leave behind everything that tethered him to the remote village in Dybukowo Valley. But an encounter with a forest ranger Yevhen (Yev) Vovk literally changed both of their perspectives in life.

This book is vastly different than the first one. This one is less sinister with fewer folklores element but it doesn’t make the story any less entertaining. I haven’t read many shifter books but I can say this one is my favorite so far.

Yev’s breath got shallower when he saw Radek’s cock bob and slap against the ginger trail under his navel. The delicious redness spilled from the boy’s face, down his neck and smooth chest as he tensed and bit his own lip in the effort of accepting the ball pushing at his hole.

Radek was adorable and mischievous while Yev was nurturing and understanding. Together, they’re a perfect pair that balanced each other. I loved how both of them were at different crossroads in life and how they inspired each other in completing their personal journey. Also, the hot sex scenes wrapped up everything into a complete package.

Where Foxes Hunt with Wolves is a tale of conscience and acceptance. It would appeal to fans of Shifter Romance.

Intimate. Undaunted. Vivid. Bloody. Sexy.

Wyatt Baker captivating and vivid performance transport us back to village of Dybukowo ; in the Carpathian Mountains , where old deities, forest gods, changeling, witches, shifters, cults, magic and many other Slavic mythical creatures co-exist and thrive.

I had a truly wonderful time listening to this hurt-comfort, size difference, age gap, mildly kinky, enemies to lovers, opposite attract, slow burn , steamy, paranormal , shifter , a bit dark romance .

Wyatt Baker embodied heroes Radek and Yev . He made me feel Radek's panic , pain and later joy. As well as, Yev, deep love for his family , anger and later the love he shared with his fox. I was so enthralled , listened to the 11 hours and 51 minutes audio length in on sitting. Yep, that's right ...no adulting and no talking with family members. 😉😁LOL 😂

K.A Merikan have a knack for writing thrilling , entertaining stories that perfectly balance morally ambiguous characters , darkness , violence, raw and grittiness with playful , sweet , snarky , hilarious situations. Plus, their books are always hot AF.

This audio can be listened as standalone ; yet, I suggest listening book 1 , to get more of the awesome Folk Lore extensive and layered world building.

He’d come here to take revenge, not fuck. Why was Yev not taking offence ? Why was he ruggedly sexy, as if he’d just finished chopping wood under a waterfall, or some shit? " Chapter 5

I really liked the blurb. The cover picture is interesting, and I hadn’t read anything by these very popular authors for a while. So…. bingo! 😁

There’s a lot to enjoy here:

.) The reformation of rich party boy Radek from irresponsible, thoughtless mega brat/slut to a caring, loyal and committed adult.

.) Radek as a fox is cute, funny and really entertaining. And Yev’s wolf is just what I’d hoped for.

.) Yev is one of those extra strong, extra tall and extra vulnerable guys I find irresistible.

.) The power play between Yev and Radek, the vibe of dominance and submission, is very well done.

.) These guys definitely burn the sheets extra hot!

However,

.) I didn’t like Radek at all in the first few chapters and had to tell myself to keep going. And it was for the better because he does change radically.

.) The authors pack a lot of ideas, issues and problems for each MC into this book. Maybe it is just a teeny too much?

.) For some reason the setting didn’t feel defined enough. I think I felt disorientated about place and time a bit.

.) Both Radek’s mum and Yev’s dad have a 180⁰ change of heart towards the end, neither of which I could totally comprehend.

All in all, this is an enjoyable, good fun read, as long as you don’t start dissecting the plot too hard.

It's always difficult to write a detailed review without giving away spoilers. But, I'm going to give it my best. Keep in mind, these are MY opinions, so I'm not arguing with anyone over this shit. With that said...

This is the most ENDEARING shifter novel I've read. It lacks the posturing arrogance that has become the norm for that genre, and I absolutely LOVE the authors for taking that element out. Don't get me wrong, the wolves are still completely badass - as they should be. But, the MC isn't strutting around with an air of superiority while sneering at humans simply because he knows he has an 'advantage'. His personality is personal, as weird as that may sound. He's a fully fleshed out character that has been molded by his experiences and current struggles.

Which, can also be said for our foxy little fox. Sly, witty, and mischievous, he's the epitome of his nature. I know that sounds weird, as well, but you'll get it if you've read the story. Usually I want to b*tch slap brats, I just can't with it. But, Radek is such a well written character that instead of trying my patience, he pulled on my empathy.

More often than not, there's this disconnect in shifter books when the characters are in their animal form. You're not as easily able to relate to how they feel, though to be fair they're usually just given beastial urges in their animal form. And here, again, is where this story excels. Even when in animal form, you can connect with the characters. Their forms and personalities are intertwined in a way that allows you to recognize the mannerisms you've seen in these animals in nature and/or documentaries, yet completely relate it to the inner dialogue given - which goes well beyond basic animal instincts.

You can read this as a standalone, however seeing Emil and Adam make their cameos will most likely have you wanting to go back and read Where the Devil Says Goodnight.

All in all, the ONLY complaint I have is that even though this is a 370+ page novel, I wanted more. I'm f*cking greedy. Nevertheless, it's a precious journey the two take as individuals, as 'beings' that are not simply human, and as men that want to love.

Radek Nowak is a recent college graduate wanting to live the city life without any responsibility. Upon a visiting his small hometown, Radek finds himself at the mercy of Yehven “Yev” Vovk, the forest ranger. But what transpires is more than either could have imagined and it changes all they’ve known.

“He liked knowing that someone else was in charge so he didn’t have to be. Not just anyone, either.”

Told in dual POV, the story begins with Radek acting like a shameless slutty party boy. While his family adds to his need to escape, new circumstances arise causing Radek to gain a different perspective. With Yen’s gentle and nurturing side, Radek loves to be his pet and wants to prove he is worthy. Together, they are fun, flirty and with some alpha tendencies to boot.

“But you can get this. You’re my bitch. You’ll get my cum,” Yev rasped, making that last push, which shoved the firm ball in, locking his dick in Radek’s body.”

In this book, I enjoyed how the paranormal theme encompasses shifters/changelings and learned all about mates knotting. Radek and Yen are so complimentary and I liked how both confronted longstanding family issues. With the tone in this book is different than the first book in the series, it shows the authors range, and it is equally as entertaining and oh so hot.

Where Foxes Hunt with Wolves is a MM paranormal romance full of steam and with lots of heart.

[I received a digital arc for an honest review]

When I saw that K.A. Merikan was releasing a second book in their Folk Lore series I may have fan girl squealed a little because A) do you see that cover?! B) I really enjoyed the uniqueness of the first book and C) I am trash for fox shifters.

Where Foxes Hunt with Wolves
is about werewolf , Yevhen and fox changeling Radek. Yevhen has ban banished from his pack for being gay and after his punishment will be allowed back if he agrees to ignore his sexual preferences. Radek finds out shortly after the book starts that he can shift into a fox. His change is unexpected and Yevhen he near to come to his rescue. Though they started off as enemies of sort they grow an incredible bond while Radek is in his animal form. Yet fate is not in their favor since Yevhen wishes to be accepted by his pack and Radek has to adjust to his new reality and responsibilities.

"This was everything Radek needed in his life. As long as he has water, air, and Yev, he could live."

I went into this expecting the same slightly slow pacing of the first book in the series but was pleasantly surprised that it progressed more steadily and at no point did I feel like the story dragged. It also took me a second to adjust to the sexual boldness/ bluntness of the characters in the beginning(which tells me I have been reading way too much fluff lately lol). The actual relationship between Yevhen and Radek is actually slow burn and when they come together its intense, raw and passionate. While there's violent and emotional scenes there also lighthearted moments between the men while in their animal from that will melt your heart. It also made me happy that it takes place in the same small town as the first book, so we get to see two familiar faces a handle of times.

"As they kissed, all the puzzle pieces scattered in Radek's heart fell into place, revealing to him the bigger picture he'd never expected to see."

Where Foxes Hunt with Wolves
is a fantastic paranormal romance filled with old folklore and magic. A story with a blood and violence but also love and care. With characters who learn to stand up for what they believe in and for what's right. I guarantee you'll fall in love with caring possessive Yevhen and endearing rascal Radek.

This was different from the first book, Where The Devil Says Goodnight - I didn’t expect it to be the same, but it was very different. (not in a bad way, I liked this a lot)

The growth that Radek goes through was well done. He starts off as a spoiled brat, before having his whole world upended. Watching him come to terms with all these changes, and how he needs to step up for his foxes, was an excellent character arc. It was smoothly done, in a believable way.

Yev also has his own growth arc, learning to stand up for himself against his whole family and pack. I wasn’t sure if he would, for a while - I was glad to see it happen even if it came about in a rough way. It kept it balanced with what Radek had to sacrifice and grow through as well.

The fox farm was so sad, and I was glad to see them helped through the end. It wasn’t on the page too much, but definitely had a major impact.

It was overall very sweet, which was a bit surprising given the themes. Also considering how bonkers (affectionate) the first book was, this was very balanced in comparison. Way less gay bbq vibes, though again…that makes sense given, well. Duh.

This one had much more focus on families and expectations, for both characters, and how to handle being independent vs family expectations.

Wolves and Foxes

Interesting concept but I just couldn't relate to the main characters. I like how the two MCs started out as enemies and then to lovers. This kind of plot never fails to tug my heartstrings. The way they go through each obstacle together is also sweet and romantic. The sexual factor - adds a lot of steamy hotness into the story. But somehow, I just couldn't engage myself into the story .

Really enjoyed the werewolf and fox changeling aspect in this one! (Knotting, baby's first heat, also just the fox snuggling and shenanigans was very unexpectedly sweet.)

I loved seeing Emil and David cameos, especially since we know their secrets from book 1. We did get a sprinkling of cannibalism in this one, an animal cruelty side plot, and wolf pack dynamics which was a unique twist to the plot.

Honestly I never know what's going to happen going into anything by KA Merikan, which makes it even more fun and exciting.

Immediate DNF as the book starts with one of the main characters having sex with someone who is not the love interest. I don't like romances that start this way. If they aren't the love interest, I don't want to know about their sexy times with my main character.

Excellent. You do not have to read book one to fall right into this paranormal shifter tale, so much less gloomy than the first. However, make no mistake. This ain't your momma's serial shifter romance. It's K&A. You can smell the blood it's so well written, descriptive and enthralling. Big, bad wolf outcast meets pain in the ass, spoiled rotten ginger. Falling in love with Yev was easy, Radek took a minute. Let's just say Radek's growth and maturity is a major point to the story. I grew to love Radek as much as Yev.

Interesting inner dialogue, smokin hot sex, blood curdling fights, the horrific discoveries, the strange, magical atmosphere, it's delicious and gothic. Eastern Europe makes for some interesting paranormal locales.

There were some crack-ups here as well. The witch and her green brew for one. An interesting take on the traditional. Radek's screeching, spiteful mother laying on the neverending guilt trip, living in her tacky mansion. Mom was my least likeable character, even over Yev's jealous brother.

The mate bond ritual and pack acceptance was a nice morality touch. If werewolves and shifters can pull it off, there's hope for the rest of us.

And they all hoped to live happily ever after.

I absolutely love this powerfully written book. It has everything I want in a good romance, and the paranormal/ folklore setting is spectacular. It has action and adventure, suspense and witty humor, a riveting and gripping storyline, fantastic dialogue, intensity, grittiness and passion, devastating heartbreak, joy and a beautiful, steamy romance between two characters that I adored, flaws and all. It didn't take long for Radek and Yev to own my heart and they're so great together. As always with these authors, happiness is never easily achieved, and it's been a breathtaking experience to watch Radek and Yev find theirs.

This book can absolutely be read as a standalone, but due to some characters appearing from When the Devil Says Goodnight, I was really glad that I had listened to that story first. Again, it is definitely not necessary, but it added to my overall enjoyment. That being said, this book has a very different kind of darkness than the first. There is definitely magic and fantastical elements, but instead of religious, shall we say... Issues, we have werewolves and changelings. There is some serious animal cruelty (NOT BY THE MCs), but if this might be a trigger, read with caution.

This story takes the trope of being kicked out of the family for being gay and turns it on its head. Yev is a werewolf, banished from his pack until he changes his ways. Of course, he's still involved in the pack's "business," but he longs to be home again with his family and packmates. Of course, there is the matter of his older brother, Burian, who leads a smart-mouthed, rifle toting, drunk young man right where he doesn't belong, then expects Yev to clean up his mess.

Radek is local to the obscure Polish village of Dybukowo, but has been avoiding coming back due to his family obligations and it's lack of all things, alright... most things, socially exciting and 21st century technology. He and his mother live off of profits from the Fox fur farm his father started before he was born. But, after a second run-in with the new forester, where the huge man insinuated that Radek allowed bad things to go on at the farm, he decides to take a quick look on his way out of town.

Strong emotions end up being the catalyst that brings this whole story together. Radek is shown depravity beyond his comprehension, learns humility and vulnerability, and that looking beyond first impressions can lead to a better and more fulfilling experience. He is given a chance to see Yev in a different light, which might remind some readers of fairytales and folklore, just like many other happenings in the book.

Yev is put in uncomfortable and near impossible situations, and he deals with some serious doubts. His choices are painful, but decisions must be made. Until then, he takes sole responsibility for Radek's protection and well-being, and in the process, earns his love and loyalty.

Overall, although it did take a few chapters for me to really get hooked, I really did enjoy this story. I am looking forward to hearing the audio version, as I think it will add to the experience. And, aside from the fur farm, the book was really an interesting supernatural story interwoven with a bit of folklore, but not nearly as dark as WTDSG.

Happy reading!

Where Foxes Hunt With Wolves
By K.A. Merikan

This was the first book I've read by this author and I was wonderfully surprised by how much I loved it.

Radek is adorably annoying and Yev is a sexy alpha male. I loved seeing how Yev treated Radek when he was stuck as a fox and I truly felt for Radek during his angst of wondering how Yev would react when he realized who his pet fox truly was all along.

There was a wonderful HEA.

Yev was so wholesome and a gentle werewolf-giant!
I loved Radek and Ember and Coal and ugh they’re all so cute 😫

I could read a thousand more of the folk lore books

These two authors write such unique and interesting stories and this one is no exception. This wasn’t as dark as the first book in this series but I loved the fox changing and the werewolf shifter. Radek and Yev don’t start out on the right foot but once Yev rescues Radek in his fox form a bond forms between the two men which turns into so much more.

Ember (Radeks fox name) was adorable! I never gave a second thought to foxes and reading of Ember playing around with Yev and also Yev in wolf form was beyond adorable! Their bond was so strong and I loved how they bolstered each other up. They both have things going on in their personal lives and seeing them help each other out was so sweet.

I love the myths and legends that surround the town. I would love to visit this world again because it’s so intriguing! I wanted to know more behind Radek’s fox background, after getting so much backstory in the first book I missed that in this one. This is definitely more romantic and that was really nice to read. I love what these authors come up with! You always know you’re in for a ride when you pick up one of their books!!!!

Totally must read MM, shifter, HEA. Part of a series but can be totally read as a standalone. And if book one was too dark, or if the religious themes were triggers, don't be afraid to pick this one up. You will find yourself submerged into a fantastical world of a cute little shifter fox and his big bad wolf, their lives collide and you can feel the tension as they learn what a perfect partnership really is. A match made for any MM book lover, you won't be able to put down.

I have to mention the cover here because it really captures all that is this book. Yev being the big brute, yet gentle soul surrounds his little fox with his big protective arms. Each so easily interchangeable with their shifter forms. And of course a little blood splashed here and there because their journey certainly isn't going to be easy. They will need to fight for what they believe and need.

I seriously don't know how K & A do this, they flawlessly switch up their writing style flawlessly. Each book is like a fresh new journey into a new world of love, lust an of course all the yucky stuff that is life.

Here I am back at beautiful Bieszczady mountains. There is no secret that I will always have a soft spot for this series. The places mentioned in these books are definitely close to my heart.

This is a book two in the series. I believe this story is much lighter than the previous one. I think what hit me the most here was the description of the fox fur farm 😥 it broke my heart...

We had a chance to meet Radek in book one, so we have a slight idea of what kind of character he is. Free spirit, avoiding responsibilities at all cost who believes life is a one big party. Things dramatically changed for him due to an unexpected accident. Now, what would you do if you find out that you are a shifter...
Won't spoil the fan with too many details.
On the other side, we have Yev, a forest ranger with a big secret of his own. He has been banished from his pack because they can't accept that he is different, that he loves differently to their old fashion standards.
When Radek and Yev's paths crossed at the beginning of the book, they didn't become friends straight away. When they meet again it's definitely something nether of them expected. They characters clashes but surprisingly, they find a common ground. Yev turned out to be the one who Radek can lean on and help him adjust to his new reality. And Radek quickly becomes a person who Yev can share his biggest insecurities with. I love them together ❤️

It's been a long time since I've read shifter/werewolf stories. This one didn't disappoint me.

We also had a chance to see Emil and Adam, I missed them! I was secretly hoping for their realities to cross over... I wish there were more books coming in this series, I wouldn't complain at all 😁

While I hardly read PRN books anymore... for K.A. Merikan I made an exception. When this duo writes a book, I need to read it! And this book was.... phenomenal!!!
Radek and Yevhen's story is an amazingly swieet, endearing, beautiful love story.... Merikan-style! And I absolutely LOVED it!!!

Simply amazing. I really really loved this book. I mean, a sexy bratty fox and a dominant alpha wolf? Yes please!!!

This book was definitely more of my cup of tea than the first one, I connected with the characters more, and their chemistry too was off the charts. I mean the sex scenes were piping HOT, I love me a big alpha werewolf and a small helpless fox.

I also especially enjoyed the time when Radek was a tiny cute fox in need of a big guy to take care of him, the size difference always does it for me. I loved how protective and possessive Yev was of Radek and the way their relationship progressed from enemies to lovers, the trope is definitely one of my favorites. I was actually really excited about this book because most of the werewolf books I read just aren’t for me and I knew these authors would never disappoint so thank you ladies!

I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a good werewolf/shifter romance, the enemies to lovers trope or a hot possessive alpha, it’s definitely worth your time.

You guyssssss I loved this book! I always struggle to find amazing MM shifter books that aren’t omegaverse or mpreg (not yucking anyone’s yum, but I’m not a huge fan of their of those tropes) and this book absolutely hit the nail on the head for me! Beautifully written, atmospheric, angsty and with characters you absolutely fall in love with, this book was an absolute win for me!

Yev is a werewolf who has been banished from his pack for being gay. Working as a ranger in a small border town between Poland and Ukraine, he has resigned himself to a lonely existence with no mate. That is until he finds a beautiful red fox trapped in a snare in the forest. Knowing instinctively that he has to care for the little animal, he takes it back to his house to help it recover.

Radek is a bratty party boy who hates the rural town where he was raised. After a traumatic run in with a local forest ranger leads him to break into the fox-fur farm that his family owns, he is shocked to realise he can not only understand the foxes, but turn into one! Terrified, he runs into the forest and is caught in a hunting snare… he believes he is about to die when, to his surprise and horror, the man who rescues him is the sexy ranger who he had argued with earlier… now all he needs to do is figure out how to become human again, and how to seduce the man who has been unknowingly caring for him.

Godddd I loved these characters - Radek is the perfect foxy brat and Yev is the strong stoic mountain man of my dreams. Both characters are so well written and the emotional journey they go on together is just a pleasure to read. There is so much angst in this book; the horrors of the fox-fur farm, the threat of Yev’s family, the uncertainty of whether Radek and Yev’s relationship will be accepted… it was also smoking hot, and so sooo much hurt/comfort. Such a good read!

Read for:
✨ Strong stoic werewolf x sassy bratty fox changeling
✨ Hurt/Comfort
✨ Lots of biting 😏
✨ Knotting
✨ Angst and fighting against prejudice
✨ Folklore references
✨ Physical disability rep
✨ Mating bond - but choosing your mate, not fated
✨ Shifters but no omegaverse or mpreg

I cannot recommend this book enough 💕 There are some really heavy themes in here though, so please check trigger warnings before reading.

*Received A Copy To Review From The Author*

I have to say, I didn't love this as much as the first book. I didn't connect to the characters or them as a couple in the same way. They were okay. Yev was a bit distant and closed off, and not in the way I normally enjoy some how. Radek was a bit childish and spoiled. I don't know that he changed enough for me to really like him. But he does grow. I can see why they'd appeal to each other but I don't know that I buy them completely as a happy ever after. *shrugs* There was also less folklore this time, there was a bit but wasn't central to the story in the same way as the first book which is part of why I really enjoyed the first one. I wish that had been different. But it's still a good read, and if you're fans of the author you'll still enjoy this.
