Hiroya Oku (奥浩哉 Oku Hiroya, born September 16, 1967 in Fukuoka, Fukuoka) is a mangaka who is the creator of Gantz, Zero-One and HEN, all of which have been serialized in Young Jump. He has finished working on his most renowned manga, Gantz, which began in July 2000. His manga often contain explicit violence and gore, as well as sexual situations.
He won the second prize of the Youth Manga Awards in 1988, under the penname Yahiro Kuon.
He designed a character for Namco Bandai's Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 fighting game, Soulcalibur IV named Shura.
I can't believe that the best volume in the whole series for me so far is a volume with no action in it! I was crying none-stop actually, i stopped when they revived nishi, i was shocked and thought that they might have done that to get information from him. I think kurono was supposed to have more then 200 points since he had about 78 points the last time and i am confused why didn't he revive someone then ask to be free he could have had two wishes. I am still not sure of why he didn't revive kei kishimoto ! shoot, i still have tears in my eyes while writing this review but the volume was this beautiful. 3 people revived so much emotion kurono and tae lost their memories and they are trying to get them back. The little kid telling kaje how he died. i was overwhelmed by emotions to say the least. thanks for an amazing volume.
This whole volume like one big DBZ episode. You get a revive, you get a revive, YOU GET A REVIVE!
I actually thought it was cool to see so many of the people we liked come back. Some interesting turns too with the return of certain characters. By the end we also get a bit more with Kei and his girl. He makes a choice that changes everything, but how long will it last?
Good: I enjoyed a lot of the reunions here. Sad, happy, really well done. I also enjoyed a lot of bitter sweet moments and goodbyes. All well done.
Bad: I really hope a choice doesn't erase ALL the character development we got for a certain character.
Overall without big spoilers the series almost feels like a soft reboot at this point. Excited to see where it goes.
Scoring happens, and lots of participants get to make choices on how to spend their points, the results of which means Tae and Kei are back in the regular world without their memories. The emotional tension between them is actually handled rather well, and this volume steps completely away from the now familiar violence. I found myself genuinely caring about the characters for perhaps the first time in this series. It's been a long time in coming. Halfway through the series now.
Synopsis: Gantz tells the story of a teenager named Kei Kurono, among others, who die but find themselves brought back in perfectly healthy bodies and forced to participate in a "game" where they must hunt down and kill aliens.
Review: I almost gave up on Gantz several times, but now that I've read it all the way to the end, I'm glad I stuck with it. The beginning is dragged down by repulsive and unlikable characters, a messily paced story, unnecessary sexualization and gratuitous violence without much substance. As it progresses, however, the character development becomes pretty incredible and the growing threat of the enemies feels truly well done. Once the real enemies are revealed, it's mind-blowing how the series had been secretly foreshadowing their arrival from the very beginning.
Although it takes a while, some really good characters are introduced later on in the series and they're the ones that made me want to read to the end. Some characters that were absolutely unbearable in the beginning became polar opposites of their original selves and even made me sympathize with them quite a bit. The protagonist Kei for example, I hated him with all my heart for the first third of the series, he became progressively more likable in the second third of the story and then he evolved into one of the most memorable, unlikely heroes I've ever seen in this storytelling medium throughout the final third. The last third of the series is unbelievably terrifying with some of the most gruesome and disgusting battle/survival scenes in the history of fiction. It's much more bearable and intense in the final third because this time the violence and horror is happening to people we actually care about instead of a bunch of unlikable nobodies.
The final third of the story is what made me feel so glad that I didn't give up on this series. It had me on the edge of my seat more times than I can recall. There are a ton of chapters but they're very short and full of action which makes the series a quick read despite having almost 400 chapters. So even though the first third of the story was kinda bad in my opinion, it doesn't last for long and the payoff that comes after it's over truly impressed me. It's a flawed, thrilling and horrifying action series that takes a while to kick off. When it finally kicks off, however, it kicks off extremely hard.
We finally take a breather from all the action for some emotional scenes. Multiple team members got to 100 points and they're... giving them to Kurono. It was great to see some of the reunions, but it's also a bit unbelievable that all of them would actually give up being free - especially when . The whole thing would have been a lot more satisfying as a mid-series reconciliation but for one single decision from Kurono on who to revive - I can only assume that author intended to use this decision for some sort of future confrontation, but not even suspension of disbelief can excuse this.
THIS IS THE GANTZ VOLUME LADIES AND GENTLEMAN. I believe stories are meant to make you feel and— I have never wanted to scream out of excitment and anger.
There are 2 tropes I hate; bringing back dead characters and losing memory. And yet, a 5 star review.
Gantz is the piece of fiction allowed to bring back characters. Because it makes sense, it's a reward, it's not "surprise, they are alive". Kuruno fought hard to get all these people alive, he deserves it. So it's not like we were tricked by the author, this is a reward, and a new beginning for the story. I can't wait to see how it develops.
Now, I am so absolutely mad Kuruno chose 1. Alright, he deserves it but memory wipe has always annoyed me so much. Because as we saw, all his character development was thrown outside the window. And his relationshil with Tae, that I'm actually invested in, is sorta broken? Though it seems it'll get fixed.
I'm very excited to see where it goes, but I was so SO mad when he lost his memory.

Even though I've enjoyed this series from the beginning. The last 9 volumes have been nothing short of greatness and it finally feels like its all paying off. I could probably call volume 19 a masterpiece but maybe I'm just on a high of how fantastic this volume was.
It is by far the most rewarding volume. With almost everyone in the group achieving 100 points in the last mission, Hiroya Oku has opened up so many storyline opportunities and I can't wait to see where they all lead. The bizarre fanservice crap that plagued the early volumes has been absent for quite some time and he seems to have really tightened up his writing. His focus on character development with the current group has paid off in a big way.
What an emotional roller coaster ride this series is, I can only hope the next 10 issues are as good as the blue books.
The final boss is defeated by Kurono and Izumi. The mission completed.
The rest of the volume is so heart-touching and wholesome! The post-mission evaluation begin. Most of them get over 100 points (Kurono, Izumi, Sakata, Kaze, Reika and the old man). Because of indebted to Kurono, they helped him revived someone he wants and set him free. Izumi chose Option 2: redeem more powerful weapons. Sakata chose Option 3: revive Sakata. Reika chose Option 3: revive Tae. The old man chose Option 3: revive Kato. Kaze chose Option 3: revive Nishi. Lastly, Kurono chose Option 1: set free and his memory getting erased.
Kei and Izumi both defeat the final boss. Most of the players get 100+ points. To show gratitude towards Kei being their leader in tough times, Reika uses her 100 points to bring back Tae, Old man uses his 100 points to bring back Kato, Kaza uses his 100 points to bring back that player alien in the initial games (this was Kei's choice idk why).
Izumi uses his 100 points to get a powerful weapon. That is so Izumi like.
Kei uses his 100 points to be freed and all his memories are now erased.
Even though their memories were erased, there are proofs in the real life like having pictures together. So, they now know that part of their memory is lost.
In the end of this volume, an unknown person visits Kei. Who might that be?

Gantz continues and Gantz changes. In the 19th episode of Gantz, the missions change but they continue. Old characters return and the fallout of everyone being able to see the Gantz mission has the beginning of effects. This is one of the better volumes as the characters go through things and reach logical conclusions. There is none of the nonsensical behavior to create drama. I'm looking forward to the next volume.
THIS. VOLUME. Best volume so far. Finally something good happens in this whole freaking series. I am so happy! So please don't ruin the rest of it and let the good things stay until the end. Thaf's all I want.
this volume is a real tear-jerker. they were so considerate of kei that they sacrificed their points for him. i also like how takeshi lives with kaze now. the way he talked of how he died breaks my heart.
