Hiroya Oku (奥浩哉 Oku Hiroya, born September 16, 1967 in Fukuoka, Fukuoka) is a mangaka who is the creator of Gantz, Zero-One and HEN, all of which have been serialized in Young Jump. He has finished working on his most renowned manga, Gantz, which began in July 2000. His manga often contain explicit violence and gore, as well as sexual situations.
He won the second prize of the Youth Manga Awards in 1988, under the penname Yahiro Kuon.
He designed a character for Namco Bandai's Xbox 360 and Playstation 3 fighting game, Soulcalibur IV named Shura.
It looks like the other team isn't really invincible. They are out of their mind for sure and they fight unorthodox but they are also stupid and drugged to the core. Did the writer forget that he revived nishi i haven't seen him talk much or do much this issue? I also think that the old team is making a big mistake by not taking part in the fight we all know that if they don't get points they die anyway so it is not about surviving only.
This was kind of fell short of the hype after the last one.
So Kei is out. He dead as fuck. But don't worry, we will bring him back. I hope. The Gantz gang is on a new mission, but this time outside of Tokyo, and this time they meet another group of Gantz people. This group is kind of fucking insane and they rape and murderer aliens because they think it's like a video game. When the aliens starting to chase the little muscle rider kid he must fight back. So begins to the match!
Good: The moments with the kid fighting is fucking epic. Also, there's a moment all the other gantz team gets murdered and it's pretty amazing.
Bad: The story is starting to feel like it's dragging of finding something new to do but unsure but to actually to do. The new gantz team are over the top and disturbing and just weird. Death is becoming so common it's losing it's "oh no" moments.
Overall this is probably one of the most boring parts of the entire series for me. A 2.5 out of 5 for me.
Hikawa and Chiaki forced to joining the mission together with the Gantz team. They were transferred to Osaka, where it is the first time they do a mission outside from Tokyo. There are so many aliens, in the form of yokai, wandering around the city. Without their top 2 strongest members, Kurono and Izumi, they must survive this mission.
Later, they crossed path with the Gantz team from Osaka. The team consist of skillful, ruthless, brutal and disgusting members. They treated the mission like it's a game. Takeshi also got his first kill!
After a stretch of just "pretty good" volumes, the story is finally back to making me question whether or not I'm gonna be sent to prison for reading this.
Synopsis: Gantz tells the story of a teenager named Kei Kurono, among others, who die but find themselves brought back in perfectly healthy bodies and forced to participate in a "game" where they must hunt down and kill aliens.
Review: I almost gave up on Gantz several times, but now that I've read it all the way to the end, I'm glad I stuck with it. The beginning is dragged down by repulsive and unlikable characters, a messily paced story, unnecessary sexualization and gratuitous violence without much substance. As it progresses, however, the character development becomes pretty incredible and the growing threat of the enemies feels truly well done. Once the real enemies are revealed, it's mind-blowing how the series had been secretly foreshadowing their arrival from the very beginning.
Although it takes a while, some really good characters are introduced later on in the series and they're the ones that made me want to read to the end. Some characters that were absolutely unbearable in the beginning became polar opposites of their original selves and even made me sympathize with them quite a bit. The protagonist Kei for example, I hated him with all my heart for the first third of the series, he became progressively more likable in the second third of the story and then he evolved into one of the most memorable, unlikely heroes I've ever seen in this storytelling medium throughout the final third. The last third of the series is unbelievably terrifying with some of the most gruesome and disgusting battle/survival scenes in the history of fiction. It's much more bearable and intense in the final third because this time the violence and horror is happening to people we actually care about instead of a bunch of unlikable nobodies.
The final third of the story is what made me feel so glad that I didn't give up on this series. It had me on the edge of my seat more times than I can recall. There are a ton of chapters but they're very short and full of action which makes the series a quick read despite having almost 400 chapters. So even though the first third of the story was kinda bad in my opinion, it doesn't last for long and the payoff that comes after it's over truly impressed me. It's a flawed, thrilling and horrifying action series that takes a while to kick off. When it finally kicks off, however, it kicks off extremely hard.
So Kurono died just as Gantz decided to send them on a mission. Convenient as hell. Obviously, the whole point of this is just to have Katou swear to revive Kei! I think the story would not have suffered at all had Kurono chose not to free himself. I still don't see the point of the vampires (and they're actually along for the ride too! ). I guess... the author needed two more badass katana-wielding humanoids.
So anyway, the big reveal here is that the Gantz team... is not alone -
Things escalate to bloody levels extremely quickly - but I think most readers, like me, are kind of numbed by this point. The number of deaths and amount of gore the author throws out feels like par for the course now. Takeshi is actually contributing here, which is awesome to see actually, and Kaze has a moment of personality here beyond "I'm strong!". Oh, and we finally get some response from the government.
This was terrible. I really can’t stand Kato and didn’t realize how much I enjoyed his character being dead. His goody two-shoes personality is incredibly grating and doesn't fit well at all with the current group, which could lead to some interesting conflicts but we've been with Sakurai, Sakata, Reika etc. for so long that it just feels like a disruption to the current team. What’s worse and what I hated most about this volume was the two vampires who killed Kei travel with them to Gantz and after a tiny fight they're completely ignored and of course Kato suggests they will need to work with them now, um....... WHAT?
Sorry but that is the dumbest shit I’ve seen in a long time and pretty insulting to readers who have stuck with it for this long. What a joke. I'm going to reserve my judgement on Kei's fate until we find out if he can be revived or not, if he can then this would undoubtedly be the "jump the shark moment" of the series. Bringing him back would make absolutely no sense to the story and rules Oku has set and I'd be convinced that he has been making up the story as he goes from chapter to chapter.
What a massive disappointment. We’re not even one volume away from the epic Blue books and I’m already worried about the rest of the series.
I have not read parts 1-20, but this one is just bizarre and interesting enough to make me curious. Reminds me of a B SciFi movie, but with stunning sets and effects: the art is cool, the story is sex, violence, and monsters. This does not appear to be thought-provoking or earth-shattering literature, just some cool manga, which is, I think, why I like it. Filthy, strange, action-packed, and artful!
Hola hola aprendiz y lector.
Kei is dead. And everyone else are in a new game now which is in Osaka and not in Tokyo. Before they could do anything, they saw another set of players from Osaka doing the killing. The two games have been merged.
Without Kei (our protagonist), this volume felt boring.

I miss when there was a female character whose only personality wasn't liking Kuruno. That said, the only female to ever be like that's personality was having big tits and getting r*ped every volume. Will this manga ever treat female characters like human beings?
The group is sent by Gantz to Osaka to encounter new aliens. There's more surprises as they meet new people and try to figure out what to do and how to survive. The story stays interesting.
the osaka team is so different from the tokyo team. i don't understand why gantz would bring the tokyo team there. they aren't allowed by the other team to get points. this is so stupid.
