Catch My Fall

Rate this book
Thirty-something failed cartoonist, Faye Jensen, finally has her sh*t together -- or does she? With a sudden layoff leaving her unemployed and evicted, she finds herself back in her home town and living with her topless-yoga loving mom. To top it all off, Faye discovers that her loyal boyfriend has pictures of another girl's hoohah on his phone.

So much for having your sh*t together.

Faye decides to take it like a champ -- by wallowing in self-loathing and revenge fantasies. Still, coming home has its perks.

Meet Stellan Odegard; a 6'4 MIT dropout and ninjitsu instructor who isn't too keen on Faye's pity party. As Faye's oldest friend, Stellan drags her out of her funk with pizza, Billy Idol, and an intriguing project that forces Faye to pick up her sketchbook for the first time in a decade. But as the spirit of art heals Faye's soul, she finds herself dreaming of her old buddy in a new and unexpected way. If only Stellan felt the same way about her.

CATCH MY FALL is a part laugh-out-loud, part heart-wrenching tale of eccentric billionaires, cartoon monkeys, and the art of Cyndi Lauper hairstyles. It reminds us to always follow what makes the heart sing and that it's never too late to decide what you want to be when you grow up.

Due to adult themes, language, and steamy content, this title is intended for readers who are 18 years or older.

It's just meh

I wanted to like this book. For about 45% I did them I got tired of Faye's s*&t. She just kept making such stupid choices.I gave 3 stars because I like every other character in the book but her and Cole. Normally I root for the HEA but I honestly didn't feel she deserved one. If anything it seemed Faye needed some alone time and therapy.

Loved this so much. Couldn't put it down, it made me late for work, left me distracted, I felt like a crack whore in need of just a snippet to keep me going. Fabulously funny and emotional, pulled all the strings so perfectly.

I really wanted to like Stellan. At first, he seemed great and he did a lot of good, unusual things. Unfortunately, there were some red flags and they were big ones: his famously bad temper. He gets angry at Cole and wants to defend Faye which is good, but he decides to try to start a fight with him outside a party Faye is hosting, without even considering how Faye would feel about that, and Faye has to literally get between them (and almost gets hurt doing it). She made them both leave, which brings me to the second huge red flag: Stellan's so mad about having to leave that he gives her the silent treatment. Again (he does it many times throughout the book). I'm sorry, but that's a terrible sign for a relationship. I would not trust a man who did that. One of the reasons he does it on another occasion is because she didn't tell him something terrible that happened to her in art school until years later and he thought what happened to her was worse? Like...why are his feelings about something she couldn't talk about for years due to trauma her problem to manage? She even says that she didn't tell anybody, and he still punishes her for it for days. He doesn't seem to care that she's obviously working through something at all. Horrible behavior.

There are several scenes set in his dojo (he's a sensei in a Japanese martial art) and all of them were wildly inappropriate. He asks her to join a class because he has a new female student coming and wants her to be more comfortable, which sure, I guess, but then his behavior towards Faye isn't appropriate. Frankly, if I saw an instructor sexually harassing a student and behaving inappropriately, I would leave and file a complaint with their organization (because of my long experience with Japanese martial arts and how ethics work). At best, I think a woman witnessing that on her first day wouldn't think it was cool and wouldn't come back, I would hope. There's another scene where they make out in his office before all the other students have left (!) and a student sees them multiple times because he wants to talk to him and Stellan doesn't even find out what he wants first before putting him off. Then there's the hitting scene where she asks him to hit her harder during class, he makes a sexual joke about it, and then he hits her too hard. Oh, but he feels bad about it? Yeah, I don't care - what were we supposed to take away from that? That he would feel bad for hurting her? Because the damage was already done at that point. He shouldn't have agreed, especially not during a class, and it shows very poor judgment on his part, which brings me to the next problem.

Towards the end of the book there's a bunch of undernegotiated kink. I already didn't think Stellan was a super safe person (see above) but he's already hurt her due to not knowing his own strength? It's actually not that difficult to hurt someone if you don't know what you're doing, and they don't take any kind of precautions at all, it's more "surprise" kink. Yeah, sorry, but I prefer things safe, sane, and consensual.

Other than that, there were some unnecessarily gross parts. It makes sense that Faye feels depressed and just wants to wear her pajamas and watch tv, but do we really need to be told she didn't shower for three weeks? It's just a bit much.

I liked the premise of the book and the characters were engaging. And yet...

1. If you're looking for a romantic comedy (emphasis on 'romantic'), this is a really slow burn book. Like, barely-keeping-the-fire-alive-for-most-of-the-book slow. While Faye and Stellan aren't together for most of the book, some people might consider the one story thread to be an OM one. I can sense the chemistry between F and S, but scenes where they're alone together generally aren't long enough for it to develop.
2. Does Stellan pay Faye for her artwork? He knows she's unemployed and it appears that he could easily cover it. Yeah, maybe she wouldn't take the money and part his reason for asking her to draw was to encourage her to start creating art again. But still. There's a reference to Evan asking to buy her out, so maybe she will get a cut of the profits when the game sells?
3. It's too bad that no female animator role models were mentioned.
4. I never understand the whole calling-your-friends-whore-in-affection thing, but I get some women apparently do it. But the two straight guy friends calling each other 'homo' was a bit much. It's 2022, people.
5. My biggest issue was that Faye shows very little growth for much of the book. A couple of positive steps (e.g., ditching a toxic relationship, choosing something that's riskier but will make her happy over the safer, more financially stable choice) are shoehorned into the very last chapters. There's also a couple of things that are set in motion that promise that Things Will Be Okay and Faye will get her HEA.

I got an ARC e-book for this and Amazon won’t let me review yet!

When I read the blurb for this book, my first thoughts were “oh this sounds hilarious and the main character talks like I do.”
I’m a sucker for smartass MC’s.

I was not disappointed!
I laughed my way through this book. I was pleasantly surprised by the slow-burn! Every time I thought the kiss would happen it DIDN’T. I had butterflies at all the right times, and I could not put this book down.

Faye, like others have said, is quite immature for a 30-something. She’s kind of whiny and over dramatic. I would expect this reaction to a break up from a 17-23 year old. I feel like some things were half-ass thrown in there for a shock factor (ie the bruises).

I was a little turned off at the beginning due to the outrageous amount of slut-shaming. I had to take a mental step back and actually put myself in her shoes. I, too, would probably talk like that if I found crotch shots on my SO’s phone.

I honestly think my favorite character in this is Evan. He was the only friend that actually got a backstory. I was disappointed that I never got to learn about how the women fell into Faye’s life.

I think my major disappointments were actually small: quite a few spelling mistakes and missed punctuation. It also seemed very British at times. I’ve never heard an American say “a pint at the pub” in reference to getting a beer at the bar. There were quite a few instances like that.

I highlighted so many amazing one-liners. I felt like I was reading the same sass I use with friends.

Faye Jensen is a thirty-something gal that just can’t seem to catch a break. Not only has she lost her job due to a layoff, but she’s been evicted from her home and finds pictures on her boyfriend’s phone of another girl’s hoohah. Now she is stuck moving back home with her topless-yoga loving mom and trying to pick up the pieces.

This book made me laugh out loud at some of the situations that Faye finds herself in. She is a bit naïve and trusting, misunderstands so many things, falls in lust with her best guy friend, and has a love of 80’s music. Faye goes through a range of emotions while trying to get her life back in order and there are times I want to yell at her “don’t go back to the ex”. She is that friend who is a train wreck that can’t seem to get herself together, but you love her none the less.

This book has a lot of things for everyone; humor, romance, laugh out loud moments, and a story about friendships and looking for a happy ending.

Friends to lovers? Yes please. Often I prefer enemies to lovers because who doesn’t want someone who once only saw all your flaws to fall in love with you, however there’s something to be said for a long time bestie who has seen you at your worst and still loves you. Newfield has made this story come to life and is beautiful. One sided pinning is always great to read when the character thinks the other person doesn’t care about them like that. Best friends who don’t want to ruin their friendship. This book also had more serious notes to it though as after Faye loses her job she also loses her house and learns her boyfriend has been cheating. She is forced to move home with her mom where she battles feelings of inadequacy and believes herself to be a burden to all her friends and family. Her constant anxiety about not being wanted by men and being a lazy slob who still lives at home create a very relatable character who believes she is going nowhere in her life at the moment.
I loved every second of this book and wished we got a little epilogue to see where they ended up.

Evan, Faye and Stellan were best friends since their schooldays. Now, Evan owns his own Billionaire-Empire, Stellan still lives in his parents basement and Faye had to move back into her mothers house after she lost her job and still hasn't found a new one.

When she discovers a very intimate picture on her then boyfriends phone, she takes her things and leaves. Sadly, she still loves him or so she thinks and that leads her into a very dangerous downward spiral.

And then suddenly she discovers her attraction to her long-time friend Stellan.

Can her new and old friends bring her back or will she give up all hope?

I really loved reading this story with it's many downs and small ups.

Reading how Faye, in her early 30s, had everything going for her and then it was all taken away. To read about the downward spiral and the things she did to attempt to cope was really life-like. But then she clawed her way back with the support of her friends all the way through. Not only did the book show how someone struggles but also showed how ones friends should support people who go through that time. I could not put this book down! The only reason I'm not giving it 5 stars is because Faye made some really stupid, aggravating decisions... Repeatedly. More times than I can handle in a single book for a heroine. But overall, I really enjoyed the characters and the evolution if Faye/Stellan's relationship.

3.5. Good read, but really didn’t like the no self-esteem take the shitty ex back (not a spoiler). I think the book could have been just as good without that part.

Shew lawd! This story got me. It really was relatable, showing that no one’s life is what it seems from the outside, it shows that relationships are complicated and simple all at the same time. It’s a great book!

I really enjoyed this book, but I have to say that Faye was immature for 33. I get that her life was in turmoil, but she is surrounded by people who love her and really tried to help her get through it. She was still likable enough and I understood why she felt that no one would be interested her because I have been there in the past, but wallowing in self-pity is not the way to get through it. Stellan was a great character and he would be someone I would love to be with. He was fun and loving and sexy as hell! I didn't love the ending but at least it was and HEA!
