Hillingham Hollow Romance #1

A Kiss at Halloween

Rate this book
This Halloween, lose your heart in Hillingham Hollow…

Welcome to Hillingham Hollow, the wholesome Texas suburb where romance abounds and real magic is rumored to be in the air.

It’s nearly Halloween in Hillingham Hollow, and Kaelin’s weekend of volunteering just went from potentially fun to passionately fraught, as she finds herself building a carnival booth with a sexy former classmate—and embarking on an emotional roller coaster as heart-pounding and dizzying as any fairground ride.

Book 1: A Kiss at Halloween

Come volunteer at the carnival, Kaelin, she said. It’ll be fun, she said…

When Kaelin’s friend Pauline suggests building a booth together for the upcoming Halloween carnival, Kaelin has doubts. Sounds like a lot more effort than Kaelin feels willing to expend these days. But then Pauline reminds her that, not only is the carnival part of her friend Joy’s big wedding celebration, it’s also for charity.

Kaelin caves, thinking at least the project might distract her from her usual worries—the ones about being a twenty-year-old still living at home with her parents, jobless, skill-less, and without any sense of direction in her life.

Then, at the last minute, Pauline skips out on the booth-building business, leaving Kaelin high and dry.

Worse yet, she leaves Kaelin paired with a different volunteer, altogether: Max Yang, the hot metalhead mechanic with whom she kinda-sorta used to flirt back in high school.

Sure, Max is a cool person and great to look at—and he might even be willing to spin Kaelin’s whole world around with a few passionate kisses over the weekend—but there’s no way he, a guy Kaelin hardly knows, and who’s so different from anyone else in her life, can hold the key to breaking her out of her rut. Or to unraveling her entire, bewildering future.

Can he?

Cute, quick read with a sometimes insufferable heroine. But it's really not her fault. She's been suppressed by her parents practically her entire life. When she starts to grow that backbone and be herself, they keep trying to keep her down and control her. Thank goodness she ends up with a loving guy to help her out!

The people on the cover look nothing like the descriptions of the characters. They both realize she needs to grow up and start living her own life. Then he proposes and she says yes. They are 20 years old. Facepalm

It’s been a long time since a book kept me up reading until 2am, totally unable to put it down.
I loved the cute story, and the Halloween setting, but the ending snuck up on me. I was enjoying it so much, I wanted more.

I really enjoyed this book! It’s not dark, scary or spicy. It’s just a sweet little romance.

The author did a really good job at writing this book. I have several highlights in this book. To me this is a very down to earth realistic love story. I love how they finally got to start their happily ever after. There are some amazing life lessons that Kaelin that I have also gone through and still learn to this day. I'm very grateful her and Max got together and that he is there to help her and guide her in the right way loving, caring, and patient with her and yes very protective of her. I can't wait to read the other books. Thank you for such a lovely story.

This book was only an OK book not necessarily my favorite maybe because there was too many easy steps to fall in love there wasn’t a whole lot of drama and there wasn’t a lot of actual love really showcase besides towards the end of the book which was chapter 12 overall this book was OK. I don’t know if I would recommend this to someone though.

🔻 Genre: Fiction; romance.
👁 Point of view: First person.
🖊 My review: Though I do not find romance type novels my cup of tea, I thought I would give this one a go. The first point I noticed is that Elizabeth Myles has a good writing style, that is, one that I enjoyed because it is descriptive, and it flows nicely.

The main character – the narrator, in fact – is a girl named Kaelin. Her name kept reminding me of kaolin.

There are mentions of kiełbasa and babka. I found that curiously interesting that Polish foods made it to Texas, where this story takes place.

It struck me that there is so very much texting, phone lighting up, and use of Siri in this story. Has the world gone that crazy, tech-wise? I suppose it has.

I stopped reading at 42%, and that is only because this story is not for me. I became tired of the kids. I could not relate to their annoying ways, nor the stiff, cardboardy parents. The use of technology wore me out, but then, back in the Olden Days, girls yakked and yakked on the phone, much to Little Brother's and parental dismay. I gave A Kiss at Halloween a kiss good-bye, but hopefully, more readers will enjoy this plot more than I.

🔲 Excerpts :
Good imagery:
🔸 I spent time on the balcony almost every day, drinking coffee and listening to music through my headphones, reading, writing, or sketching in the sunshine.

Ah, the vain mind of adolescence:
🔸 I wasn’t wearing nearly enough makeup to come face-to-face with this much handsomeness today. Just sunscreen, eyeliner, mascara, and a teensy dab of Chapstick. No foundation or lipstick at all, which meant that the freckles across my cheeks and nose were on full, glaring display while my lips were probably invisible. Lovely.

Ah, the hyperbolic mind of adolescence:
🔸 She was all over Max Yang, stroking his arm, practically humping him in the middle of Main Street. But outwardly, she kept herself in check.

This makes one wonder if Christmas ornaments are spooky to begin with, that is, the use of the word “spookier.” Spookier than what?
What are Halloween ornaments, you might ask? Well, at the time, I couldn’t be sure, but I speculated they’d be similar to Christmas ornaments, only, you know….spookier.

There is much rumor and superstition in this story:
🔸 Max said, “Must be for the fire pits. Temperature’s supposed to drop tonight.” Crumpling his napkin, he added, “I heard people saying earlier that if you toss something into one of these fires—something symbolizing ‘a bad thing’ in your life—that bad thing will disappear. Just like that.” He lobbed the napkin into a trash bin.

🔥 Dénouement: I did not get that far.
🗝 What I learned: Romance novels are still touch-and-go with me.
💫 What I like best: The author’s writing style is smooth and cleverly descriptive.
◼️ Fun fact: I read to 42%.
