I absolutely love this series, it's so charming and it's a snuggle up and feel-good read. We are again in Heartcross and though having never visited Scotland I feel as though I have through this book. The descriptions are just fabulous. Our main characters are Cam and his wife, Molly who is pregnant with their second child. They are the town's resident vet and bakers. Cam always bakes extra to give away to the homeless shelter and they appreciate it so much. Though many in town say it's hokey Molly visits a fortune teller and eerie enough all she predicts comes true. When Molly McKendrick has a chance encounter with homeless teen Bree she has off flashbacks and feels as though she knows her. She takes in Bree off the cold streets, and they become close. Secrets are revealed and though it comes as a hock they work through them. This author and series have zipped right up my list as favorites. Though there are hardships they are talked out and hardships gotten through. I loved this sweet Scottish escape, it's just a ray of sunshine.
Pub Date 30 Jul 2022 I was given a complimentary copy of this book. All opinions expressed are my own.
How on earth does Christie Barlow keep managing to come up with such completely amazing stories?
She has done so once again with this latest book in the the Love Heart Lane series, which could easily be read as a standalone, so don't panic if you haven't read all the previous fabulousness yet.
This actually almost made me cry in bits, as I was swept up in the lives of Molly, Cam and Bree.
Bree is a teenage homeless girl and her story really struck something deep within me, especially as the whole book is set in the run up to Christmas, and in the bitter cold of Scotland's winter.
Molly just wants to help but she is also very pregnant, and Cam isn't as keen but he is also hiding something.
I read this in a few short hours by a pool on holiday and don't think I acknowledged the real world once while I was reading this (just hope I did remember to drink or I may be dehydrated by tomorrow!).
There are a lot of baked goods which made me rather hungry, in addition to some incredible depth and some depending how good you are at guessing, surprising twists along the way.
What is for sure is I was swept up by this book and once again in awe of this series and this author's talents.
Thank you to One More Chapter and Netgalley for this copy which I have reviewed honestly and voluntarily.
And just like that the old charm of the Love Heart Lane series is back. I was a bit worried after the last book seemed a tad mean with kind of rude and vicious characters. But this one is back to the nice characters with great stories. Bree is a good addition to this series and I look forward to reading more about her and the new postman Ash. A very cozy read to curl up with.
If you're looking for a book that’s pure escapism and will leave you with a warm glow, then look no further. New Beginnings At The Old Bake House is a delightful book, a heartwarming tale perfect for a dreary winter’s night. Christie Barlow’s descriptive writing had me longing for freshly baked bread, cakes, pastries, and chocolate. My mouth was watering the whole time I was reading! It’s winter in Scotland and the fictional quaint village of Heart Cross. The author sets the scene perfectly. So much so I grabbed my favourite winter blanket and put my log burner on!
Love Heart Lane is such a close community with the most adorable characters. But that doesn’t mean the characters lead ‘perfect lives’, they all have their own trials and tribulations to contend with. It’s such a heartwarming tale that I read it in an afternoon. The author explores some tough issues, grief, abandonment and homelessness, which she does with a great deal of sympathy and understanding.
It’s not all doom and gloom though there’s gentle humour, and a story that will melt even the coldest heart. I have said it before what I absolutely love about the authors’ books is her attention to her characters. They are a joy to read about. They are so well developed by the end of the book you feel like you are saying “goodbye” to old friends. Highly recommended.
Omg - a book of highs lows sadness happiness. Such an emotional rollercoaster of heartache, family and love. Never judge a book by its cover - always support the more needed and love one another no matter what. Give thanks for everything you have, be lucky to have people around you and a bed to sleep in- some people don’t even have that. Such a page turner - which Such twists.
I wanted light and cozy but deep. This book was perfect. I hadn’t read the other prior eight books in the series (This book’s kindle version was on sale for 99 cents which is why I began with book nine.), but this book was wonderful as it was. Of course, now I want to read the rest of the books in the series.
I’m very into Scotland of late. This book was just what I was in the mood for. You will want to eat and bake and eat and bake when you read this book. I’d love to try that chocolate bread.
I wish for only two things where this book is concerned. I’d have loved to see recipes at the end of the book… and I would have loved to have read some descriptions about Scotland (though there was snow through the entire book).
The characters were wonderful. I loved the twist at the end. I felt warm and happy when I finished the book. What more could one ask for?
I’m loving the Love Heart Lane series from Christie Barlow. She writes such warm and emotional stories and this one with Molly centre stage is just as wonderful as usual. Emotions are running high as new and old friends try and get through the harsh winter months and I loved seeing Molly and Cam now living at the bakery. Meeting up with some old favourite characters and being back in the village is a treat and I’ve loved getting to know that little bit more about Molly and her background before coming to Heartcross.
Wow new beginnings at the old bakehouse is the most wonderful charming read full of Heartcross familiarity, magic and charm so fantastic to be transported back to that wonderful place with familiar characters and new exciting ones too! This book continues molly and cams story and covers many issues such as abandonment, grief, loss, homelessness but overall it resonated with hope, forgiveness and family! The progression of cam and mollys relationship, the growth of the bakery, and the kindness exhibited to the homeless community, tied in with secrets from the past, revelations and the inclusion of the wonderful new character Bree made this the most endearing read that I really didn’t want to end! So looking forward to the next love heart lane read! Thank you netgalley for this early read!
Christie Barlow has done it again. I absolutely loved this book and I couldn’t put it down. I love the Love Heart Series and they are all brilliant books.
I loved all the characters in this book. It was lovely catching up with Molly and Cam. It was such a heartwarming story.
I love returning to Love Heart Lane it’s like catching up with old friends. I can’t wait to read the next book on the series.
I never tire of visiting Heartcross, as they say once you go to Heartcross you never want to leave, what a true statement!.
I absolutely adore the Love Heart Lane series, in this installment we visit Molly and Cam who we met in book six Primrose Park so was lovely to catch up with them and see how life has changed for them.
I thought Bree was such a sweetheart and her story is heartbreaking.
Dixie is a wise old woman and look foward to reading more about her life.
This can be read as a standalone but I highly recommend you read the series you will be addicted.
New beginnings, second chances and a mystery that's been covered up since Bree's birth. Readers are in for an adventurous story that's full of heart and reminds us that we shouldn't judge others by first impressions.
When Molly meets Bree there was something familiar about her but she couldn't figure out why someone she barely knew was triggering flashbacks. Bree's been living on the streets since her mother's death and had to grow up fast. Meeting Molly at the shelter unleashes a chain of events that will impact the Bakehouse.
Christie Barlow's Love Heart Lane series is a lovely nod to the charming communities that I encountered while living abroad. Barlow brings to life Cam and Molly's story while adding a dash of Bree's just desserts. Awaiting the birth of their second child, Cam is hiding an upsetting secret from his wife. While trying to protect her, Cam is pushing Molly away and she doesn't understand his behavior.
Cam's rude reaction and treatment aggravates Molly. She wants to give the young girl a chance and Cam's prickly behavior is unlikely his usual jolly demeanor. Pushed to the breaking or in this novel, 'baking' point, Molly cooks up a way to have the secrets revealed. Will the truth create new beginnings or is the frosted past about to unleash a wintry season?
Molly is excited about having a baby. She meets a young woman named Bree who she takes in. Little does she know that Bree has a secret that will conexas a shock. Thus book was an enjoyable read.

Trigger Warnings This book contains: • Adoption • Health concerns • Generational homelessness • References to domestic violence. Characters Molly and Cam are characters that we’ve met in previous books. Specifically, when their romance began in Primrose Park. Molly is starting maternity leave for her second baby and using that time to try and help Cam out in the bakery. At the same time, she’s continuing the offer support to the local homeless shelter despite the bad weather and Cam’s concerns. Knowing how fortunate she is, Molly is determined to help others in need, especially as the weather continues to worsen as the season changes into winter. Meanwhile, Cam is struggling with his own worries and wants to keep his family close by so he can hold himself together. While he understands Molly’s desire to help those less fortunate, his own fears are holding him back from communicating clearly and openly which in turn makes their relationship more strained. Storyline Molly comes across Bree when she’s dropping off pastries to the local shelter and is immediately drawn to her in a way she can’t explain. While she’s desperate to help Bree, Cam is desperate to keep his family and their home private and together. Between Cam not wanting Molly to help Bree so personally, and not wanting to compete in the Scottish Baker of the Year Award, their relationship is coming under strain that’s unprecedented. Overall Thoughts As I was reading this, I felt struck by the realisation that there appeared to be several storylines I’d read in previous Love Heart Lane books being repeated, including: • Pregnant woman and her male spouse hiding things causing relationship problems (Foxglove Farm) • An adopted main character where the knowledge of their true parents isn’t known (The New Doctor at Peony Practice) • A winter storm causing the town to be cut off and struggling (Love Heart Lane). But, as the story progressed, I could see that while Christie was using these same elements, she was mixing it up a little in how they wove into the full story. Although, the spelling, grammar and typo errors continued in this book which kept putting me off. In the end, the mystery, the little clues and the drama kept me engrossed and needing to know what was going to happen. Not to mention, knowing there were more books I’ve missed in the series, I’m wondering whether Bree will get her own one down the line. And how that might play out.
I always love this author and she didn’t let me down at all simply so well written and really made you want to read more full of mystery romance families and finding out secrets. So well written with great characters and makes you want to be a part of the wonderful heart cross village. Molly is living with cam her partner and is expecting their second baby she meets a fortune teller who tells her secrets will come out and a new baby girl with the name beginning with L and she’s wondering what the secrets will be. Cam runs the bakery and the village is in thick snow and when Bree who is homeless turns up and molly takes her in for the night as the shelter is full cam isn’t impressed and they both pop out leaving her in charge. Cam has been invited to the bakery of the year competition but he won’t do it and molly doesn’t no why as he’s so good. Bree makes some chocolate bread but then takes off very quickly and cam can’t find his phone so blames her but molly is adamant it’s not her but worried about her being out in the bad weather. Cam is also hiding something from molly he just can’t share with her but when molly finds the bread she’s sure cam has made it getting ready for the competition but they soon learn it was molly. Molly says something and it makes molly have flash backs to her childhood as she was adopted not knowing her mum but they find Bree and as they are talking things comfort but what will it be and how will it change everything. Will cam let out what he’s hiding and will he enter the competition and will they all be happy or not.
A lovely catch up with the Love Heart Lane series. The characters feel like good friends. Molly is helping Cam at the Old Bakehouse and they deliver leftover bread to the local shelter. Molly gets involved and is surprised that Cam resists her being too involved. Great story with relationships, friendships, family life, charity and daily life. along with the the delicious bakery! Everything to keep your interest.
Thank you to Netgalley for a pre publication copy. In return for an honest review! #newbeginningsattheoldbakehouse #netgalley
Molly and Cam Bird own and run The Old Bakehouse. A bakery thats been in the family for decades. Since award winning Great Uncle Ted ran it. Family life is just as it should be. A harmony for both parties? Their son George and grandmother Dixie as well sd the baby on the way. Until they meet 16 year old Bree at the homeless shelter. Will life ever be the same again? Will they recover from the disaster Bree brings with her?
After reading book 2 in the series "Foxglove Farm." I have been following the author. Knowing I wanted to read all the books in the Love heart Lane series. So far I have read all the books after and including book 2.
This is book 9 however you would not know this when reading and this book makes a great stand alone. Something I think this author has got down to a fine art. Although I can guarantee you'll soon be reading the rest of the series because you just won't want to leave Heartcross.
Once opening the book it is a page turner. From the start until the last page you can't put it down. Christie's writing has gone from strength to strength in the heartcross series and it is one that has catapulted her into the realms of number one authors I regularly recommend to other rom-com readers.
The heart cross community are loving characters, each with their own secrets and hardships, who you totally feel yourself taking into your heart. They show you their emotions and allow you to become invested into their lives. More and more with each passing book. It's always great to meet your old friends again in the next book and watch how their lives become what they wanted from it throughout their own book. The community spirit in Heartcross at many of the events speaks right to your soul. Something you can only hope is replicated in your own community.
This book is a great romance read. Although their are some emotional subjects included in this book such as adoption, death, scandels in the community and homelessness amongst other things. I do not feel this takes away from the romantic feel of the book but has you heart growing fonder of the struggles each character faces and rooting for them to overcome it and use it to shape their future. Whilst being thankful that Christie brings up and raises the profile of important and often taboo subjects in modern Britain.
It is difficult for me to say this but I think this has pushed Heartcross Castle off rhe podium of my favourite book in the series. Whilst taking its place instead.
I Cannot wait to read the next book as always.
I would also say that I much prefer the titles like the other books of "The old bakehouse." I feel changing it to the long title it now is 1, doesn't roll off of the tongue so easy and 2, isn't in keeping with the love heart Lane brand. This doesn't effect the book hence my review is no different but just a thought for the publishers and one I also said in book number 8 as well.

I couldn’t have been happier to discover that publication of the latest instalment of Christie Barlow’s Love Heart Lane series had been brought forward as I have been a huge fan since book one. It felt like Christmas had come early and a wonderful gift awaited me. There was no way I was going to leave New Beginnings at the Old Bakehouse languishing on my kindle until nearer to publication. So I dove straight in and within that very first chapter I was completely engrossed in and delighted to once again catch up with Molly and Cam whose story had previously featured in Primrose Park.
Of course there are some new characters introduced but as always returning to Heartcross feels like catching up with old friends and the warm, vibrant and solid community that Christie has established within these books always shines through so perfectly. This may be book nine in the series but as I always say, and I wouldn’t say it if it weren’t true, this new story can easily be read as a standalone. But really if you haven’t read any of the Love Heart Lane books yet then why haven’t you? They are all fabulous reads where you will devour each story in short order and just desperately wish that Heartcross and all the characters you meet are real so you could one day visit.
I read this book in early summer not realising it was set in winter and snow, blizzards and ice feature a bit and cause several problems but it only served to remind me of the good things about the winter season. I felt I settled easily into the story as I had read about Molly and Cam before and I was so glad they featured again because I had always thought that there was much more to unfold with regard to their story. Molly and Cam now run and live in the old Bakehouse which was founded by his Great Uncle Ted. They have a young son George and baby number two is on the way. Molly is a vet but taking things at a slower pace as the due date for the new arrival is fast approaching.
Straight away, the reader can sense that Cam is very much off form and he remains so for quite the majority of the story. The reasons for his behaviour are drip fed to the reader and when things are revealed you can see why he didn’t say anything to Molly as I think a lot of people would have done the same if in the same situation. It made me for a time kind of be against Cam as I hated seeing Molly anxious about her relationship when she should have felt safe and secure. I did feel sorry for Molly because she felt like she had done something wrong and that she couldn’t get through to Cam in order to get him to open up. She didn’t need any extra stress at that point in her pregnancy with him being so evasive and him also being so reluctant to participate in the Baker of the Year Competition where he could showcase his incredible talents. I felt Molly had an unnecessary burden on her shoulders. Cam was running himself into the ground working all available hours at the bakery and if he didn’t acknowledge that an extra pair of hands would be welcome I could see himself and Molly’s relationship venturing down a tricky path. Which I really didn’t want to see happen at all.
Molly is a fabulous character who does so much for all those around her. She is kind, caring, considerate and supportive and this is highlighted as every day she brings the unsold goods from the bakery to the local homeless shelter. I have to say Christie did such a brilliant job of describing all the various delectable treats that Cam whips up in the bakery. They really made my mouth water especially the Layers Treats. The descriptions only added to the warm and cosy feeling that is exuded throughout the story alongside the weather that causes some havoc. I felt wrapped up and embraced by the plot, the characters and the setting and that’s what a very good book in this genre should do and time and time again this brilliant author achieves it. Serious issues are always explored in this series alongside more light-hearted and fun moments and here the topics of homelessness, grief and abandonment are focused on. Weaving the humour alongside sombre and thoughtful problems takes skill and effort but Christie has this unique knack of blending the two strands together seamlessly and that’s another feature of what makes these books so successful and readable.
Molly alongside her friends Isla, Allie and Felicity have a night out where Martha (Isla’s grandmother) does readings. Molly is surprised by what Martha tells her and that she has a gut feeling that things aren’t right in the village and that changes might be ahead for Molly. As a reader, I desperately didn’t want anything to happen to Molly or her family as they have been characters who have found a firm place in my heart but I suppose without a little angst and some trying times there wouldn’t be much of a story to tell in the first place.
Molly always has such good intentions and when she meets a young girl named Bree at the homeless shelter she feels an unexpected connection to her. Like she has seen her somewhere before or had something to do with her. But that’s not possible. Molly is gentle and kind and always there to lend a hand. She is good natured and always has the best of intentions as demonstrated when she offers Bree a place to stay for the night when the shelter is full but Cam being the way he is isn’t best pleased. I think people who are homeless for whatever reasons, we do learn the background to Bree’s situation pretty quickly, and are judged far too rashly and here it was shown that not all people would have chosen that path. Bree’s vulnerability was highlighted. Bree is closed down, guarded and defensive and you couldn’t blame her. She has become very streetwise and has to fend for herself. It was sad to see someone so young in such a desperate situation and I think Molly’s heart went out to her and she wanted to do the best she could for her. There a lot of twists and turns and misunderstandings that occur regarding Bree and all these make for a well developed and a great paced plot. She has unexpected talents that could prove very fruitful if she was only give the chance and the benefit of the doubt. Only time will tell if things can fall into place for her.
New Beginnings at the Old Bakehouse is a warm hug of a book that encircles you from the very first page. I loved the familiarity of returning to the same setting which I adore so much. The fact there is recurring characters provides familiarity but the books are kept new and fresh with new and interesting characters introduced. My only disappointment is that Christie can’t write the books as fast as I read them. I hope she continues to write this series for as long as possible because nine books down the line it is still as strong as ever and one of my all time favourites. This book is a charming, engaging, warm hearted and feel good read that I lapped up and finished in one sitting which is a rarity for me these days. Book ten, The Hidden Secrets of Bumblebee Cottage, publishes at the end of the year and I’m eagerly awaiting that point until I can get my hands on it to return to the fantastic Heartcross and all the wonderful characters that live there.
This was a refreshing book to read as it has a right chilly feel as winter sets in at Heartcross in Book 9 of the Love Heart Lane series. Refreshing because I was sitting out reading this in a very hot garden at the beginning of July!
This book takes us back to the Old Bakehouse, obviously, the title gives this away and it was great to catch up with Molly and Cam. This is a lovely couple and they work together so well, but things are a little off with them and it's not just down to Molly being pregnant. There is something more going on and things don't improve when Molly brings in an unknown girl who was at the local shelter for those who are homeless. This is something that Cam normally would not have minded, but as I mentioned things are not quite as happy and rosy as they should be in the Bakehouse.
I adore this series and this latest book was great to read as it took us back to one of the couples featured in some of the earlier books. While getting the Bakehouse up and running has been tough, things could get tougher still and with the pressure of another addition to their family, he is a little wound up.
The community of Heartcross is a close-knit one, some families go back generations and some residents have lived there all their lives and have seen many comings and goings. There isn't much that goes on without someone being in the know or at least noticing something that reminds them of things past.
Another story means getting to know the characters a little more and also a chance to introduce others. In this case, Bree, a young girl who is homeless and a little edgy but has a heart of gold. The only thing is will anyone see past the stereotype of a homeless person image she has?
Once again there are a couple of very serious subjects tackled, there are some wonderful heartfelt moments and also a sense of dread. I will say that there are also a couple of damp-eye moments in this one as the story and the mystery of the past began to emerge.
If you have read any of the books in the series then you are going to adore this one. It can be read as a stand-alone but these are much better read in order. This is one for those who like a wonderful community, family and friendship feel story, some serious and fun moments and an all-around fabulous read. It is one I would definitely recommend.
This is book #9 in the Love Heart Lane series, and between you and me this has to be my favourite yet! Whilst it is part of a series, it can easily be read as a standalone book. We are back in the little Scottish village of Heartcross and we’re focussing on Molly McKendrick and her partner Cam who run the village’s bakery. The bakery is doing well, and they are considering looking for a new assistant, especially as Molly is heavily pregnant with her second child. Cam has worries on his mind though, and when he finds he has been entered into a bakery competition that just seems to exacerbate things more!
I have to say, I LOVED this book!! - the storyline was so heart-warming and blooming lovely how could I not have done!! The characters were just so likeable, and I loved how it had a wintery theme with lots of snow and ice! Molly is wonderful and I loved her relationship with Cam and her son, George. Whilst helping a homeless shelter based across the bridge, Molly gets involved with a young homeless girl called Bree and this goes on to cause a few problems between her and Cam. The storyline is written so well and not only does it tug at your heartstrings and have you reaching for the tissues, but it also fills your heart with joy and will leave you with a smile on your face!
The storyline flows along so well, and I became caught up in Molly and Cam’s story very quickly. Of course, it did help that there was plenty of tasty baked goods on offer, and when chocolate bread was introduced…well, what can I say, I was well and truly hooked! We get to meet some of the other villagers, who we have met in the previous books, but they were all met in passing as the storyline is definitely all to do with Molly, Cam and of course, Bree! Bree is a great character who my heart went out to. She was so young to be homeless and I couldn’t help but shed a tear or two for her storyline.
This was an absolutely wonderful read, having everything I’d want from a book. Once I’d started it, I knew it wouldn’t take long to finish and I was right, finally turning that last page over in less than a day. It does broach some difficult subjects, but the author has done a fantastic job in dealing with these sensitively and in keeping with the storyline. Full of family, friendships and, of course, all things baked! Love, loved, LOVED it!! Would highly recommend!
I’ve said it before but I’ll say it again, I love going to the Scottish village of Heartcross. Everyone is so friendly, there’s a real community atmosphere, I really wish it was real!!
For this trip, I’m returning to the lives of Molly and Cam, the village vet and baker, a few years in from when they were the central characters in Primrose Park. Life is rosy, Molly is pregnant with baby number 2, and Cam’s baking sounds amazing. But as I fully well know, there is always something in Heartcross to knock idyllic life slightly off course and this time it’s a super cold winter and a chance meeting at the homeless hostel that sends Molly on a charitable course.
I don’t think I’ve read a Barlow novel where I don’t got on an emotional journey that is not dissimilar to a rollercoaster. I started off elated to be with such an adorable couple who I’d got to know a few books back. Then I felt fear (I don’t do snow at all) and worry for those who Sam, the owner of the hostel was helping on such a bitterly winters night… I’ll stop my rollercoaster reminisce there as i don’t want to spoil the story but needless to say, I did shed a tear or two at points – a typical reaction from my trips to Heartcross.
New Beginnings At The Old Bakehouse ticked every single box I’d expect from Christie Barlow and more. I had my familiarity of the characters I’ve grown to know and love, I had the bumps in the road, the emotional pendulum. This is another heartfelt addition to the series and I can’t wait to visit Bumblebee Cottage at the end of the year!
My only bit of advice when reading this book is not to read it on an empty stomach! Set in a bakery, the descriptions of freshly baked bread, croissants, cake, chocolate, my mouth was literally drooling at all the scrumptious sounding food.
Even freezing temperatures couldn’t spoil the wonderful idyllic setting of Heartcross, if anything it added to it’s charm. It did make for some what sombre reading though in part as the author touches on the subject of homelessness of which it really brings it home to you when people are living on the streets at the coldest time of the year. My heart went out to Bree and to everyone who finds themselves in this situation. I think it made me warm to Molly even more if that were possible as she is a lovely character but her gentle and thoughtful nature really gelled with me.
The author packs so much into this novel and I couldn’t put it down. The small community feel and wonderful characters had me wholly engrossed. Picking up a book in this series always makes me feel like I’ve come back home and they are so warm and comforting. This one especially left me feeling uplifted as well as craving for fresh bread and cake! New Beginnings at the Old Bakehouse was every bit as scrumptious as I had imagined. A novel that wraps you up in a great big hug and has you feeling all warm and rosy inside!
My thanks to One More Chapter and NetGalley for an advanced readers copy of this book. All opinions are my own and not biased in anyway.
Since their first introduction, in Primrose Park, Molly and Cam have received passing mentions in the subsequent books, and I have noticed myself enjoying reading about them, albeit briefly. I knew from the title of this book that I was going to be catching up with old friends, and I wasn’t disappointed.
As is the same with all of the books in this series, New Beginnings can be enjoyed as a standalone story. In fact, I think if you start with this delightful book, you’ll soon find yourself seeking out the other instalments.
Bree is a welcome addition, and she adds edginess as we learn about how she found herself homeless, living on her wits. Molly is unexpectedly drawn to this vulnerable character and risks her happy relationship as she feels driven to help her. Conversely, Cam is feeling less than impressed with Bree, but it soon becomes clear that his anxiety comes from a different source than his mistrust of the young woman.
One of the joys of Christie Barlow’s writing is her skill at weaving complex storylines into beautiful books. There is plenty of intrigue as secrets from Cam’s family collide with Molly’s own, unknown past. For the avoidance of spoilers, I will leave it there, but rest assured, this is another fantastic read.
I found this story delightful and real, especially the friction between Molly and her baking husband Cam, and I am happy I did not swear off Barlow's Love Heart Lane series for good after reading one book that did not thrill me. This addition to the well-established series addresses the sad reality of the prejudice the homeless face and provides some poignant moments as family supports family and the community comes together in a snow-swept Scottish December. The cherry and sauce on top: some scrumptios bakes, an expanding family and a super positive ending.
The content is heartwarming and sweet, the setting an idyllic small Scottish country town that, unfortunately, has its share of down-on-their-luck homeless who rely on the kindness of volunteers and local businesses like the Old Bakehouse for a warm bed and a hot meal. This is more about life's mysteries, challenges and rewards than romance but is no less captivating for it. Barlow has definitely reanimated my interest in this series.
Thanks to Harper Collins UK/One More Chapter and NetGalley for sharing a complimentary advance copy of the book; this is my voluntary and honest opinion.
It is always a pleasure to return to places you know and love and it is the same with this the Love Heart lane series of book. Of course they can be read as a standalone novels, but with this latest one you need to know a bit more about Molly and Cam and you can see their friendship started back in Primrose Park.
We are further on since Molly and Cam met, and in the Old Bakehouse where Cam is up very early to bake for the villagers and provide them with the best baked good around. Molly is cooking another little bun – a baby for them both and a brother or sister for little adorable George. But things are not quite as contented as they should be.
Cam is holding something back, but won’t tell anyone what it is. He is reluctant to follow in the footsteps of his Great Uncle and enter a renowned baking competition but will not tell anyone why. Has he lost interest in baking? Molly?
Molly is touched by the help she gives at the homeless shelter, but she thinks it might be her hormones. That is until she meets Bree. Something she says, sets a memory off in Molly and she just can’t quite place it. When Bree seems to keep turning up seeking shelter, Molly’s instinct to provide kicks in but is it something else connecting them. And why is Cam so reluctant to be hospitable and charitable?
As winter sets in and snow arrives at Heartcross it seems this little family at the bakehouse is struggling with their own blizzard whilst the world gets whiter outside of their front door. Heartcross is cut off, so it seems the community is going to come out and support each other as you would expect. Here it is where you get to meet previous characters from the series and it is always great to catch up with them.
When a thaw sets in and some truths are revealed it seems that perhaps the perfect beginning is now here. Or course it is never going to run smoothly is it?
This is a book to devour as it is full of warmth as well as enticing descriptions of food! Somehow Christie Barlow seems tackle some tough issues with skill and empathy and weave them into a story with tact balanced out against all the humour that also comes with her novels. Being in Heartcross is a joy and being there with loved characters within a great community is even better.
A series which I can see turning into a modern day saga worthy of Sunday night television dramatisation.
New Beginnings at the Old Bakehouse by Christie Barlow
I received an advance review copy for free thanks to NetGalley and One More Chapter and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
Blurb
When Heartcross’ resident clairvoyant tells Molly McKendrick to expect a whole lot of scandal and upset to blow in with the approaching winter storm, Molly doesn’t know what to think.
With a baby on the way any week now, and Christmas not far off, the last thing Molly needs is drama, but when she crosses paths with Bree, a sixteen-year-old homeless girl, and takes her in from the cold, secrets from the past flood the present and Molly, her partner Cam, and their son George, are soon experiencing a holiday season filled with unexpected festive surprises…
My Opinion
I think this is the third book I have read in this series and so far I have managed to read them all as a standalone. I read this in a few short sittings, although I could probably have completed it in one sitting if I had the time. Each book I read by Christie Barlow just reminds me what a delight her welcoming stories are. I really do need to make time to read the earlier books in the series that I have managed to read.
Imagine my excitement when I found myself in possession of New Beginnings at the Old Bakehouse so soon after receiving The New Doctor at Peony Practice!
New Beginnings at the Old Bakehouse brings back to us some beloved characters, Molly and Cam, so that we can find out what happens to them next. First featured in Primrose Park, it was wonderful to come back to these lovely characters to find out what happened to them and their lovely son George.
Heavily pregnant Molly is keen to give back to the community, so whilst trying to help Sam at the homeless hostel Molly crosses paths with Bree, a young homeless girl. With Cam working hard at the Old Bakehouse, a baby on the way and now a young girl to help, Molly finds herself in a turmoil. With a snow storm thrown into the mix, there is plenty of drama in Heartcross!
Yet another excellent addition to the Love Heart Lane series, and with an opportunity to revisit characters, I am more than happy to recommend New Beginnings at the Old Bakehouse. Christie Barlow certainly knows how to write books that feel like a warm hug - it just makes me want to move to Heartcross and immerse myself in such a lovely community! Definitely go and grab yourself a copy, and cosy up with a blanket and glass of wine and lose yourself in Heartcross!
I hadn’t read a Christie Barlow book in ages and was craving a really nice- just- like- watching- a- Hallmark- movie type book. And that was when I came across this!
I love Christie Barlow and I heart Love Heart Lane! I had read only the first book of this series but didn’t feel I’d needed to read the others although they’re books I’ll most definitely be getting back to!
Here we follow Molly McKendrick, who is busy all the time working in a bakery and helping for a charity. Molly was so lovely and always out to make things right and I egged her on as she began to think about helping Bree, a sixteen year old with no home. There were mysteries surrounding Bree, and at times I crossed fingers that I could trust her and that she didn’t have ulterior motives! I also wondered about Cam which kept me on my toes and turning the page.
All in all a book that has you following along, waiting for the next surprise and praying you’ve got it right. With snow storms and bakery settings, it has it all as a Winter read and is beyond recommended! Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for the book in return for an honest review.
This book returns to Molly (the vet) and Cam who we met in book 6 (Primrose Park). Four/five years have passed and Molly is pregnant with their second child. Cam has taken over the Bakehouse and has not only managed to learn to follow his uncles recipes but, has turned into a master baker. The story is set in winter and the local homeless shelter (run by Sam) features quite heavily. Upon delivering food to the shelter Molly recognises some of the regulars and when a 16 year old girl is unable to stay at the shelter she invites her back to her home. After a bath, a hot meal and a bed for the night Cam expects her to leave but, Molly thinks this is wrong. With Molly wanting her to stay, a baking competition to discuss and Cam's secret there are lots of twists and turns in this book. The reason I did not give this book 5 stars is because I found Molly's reaction and total disregard for Cam's feeling a bit annoying after a while. He is thinking of his family and on the evidence available I think he has some valid points.
