This book is hands down hilarious. The best part is that it is historically accurate as well.

I have a virtual shelf here on GoodReads titled "outliers," featuring (main) characters who lie outside the norm. Were I to fictionalize The Conch That Roared, all the characters would be outlers. As real people, Conchs are charcters!

I have had this book for a while. Usually around Spring Break, I bring it out and give it a brief re-read. (It's a really short book.) It's not a work of great literature but the author has captured the essence of the Conch Republic with his writing style: laid back, laissez fair, humor.

I've longed to attend one of the Conch Republic's celebrations, especially the world's longest parade which stretches from the Atlantic Ocean to the Gulf of Mexico (<1 mile). The bed races sound like a hoot. I'd love to bring that spirit to our neighborhood parades.

And, to tell you the truth, I'm rather curious about conch meat.

I loved learning about the history of this fabulous nation.

It's just a fun read about a country which doesn't take itself seriously.

One of the things I love to do on vacation is to buy books about that place to read when I get home. This is from my road trip to Key West.

Did you know that Key West seceded from the Union? Did you know that they seceded from the Union by throwing a loaf of stale cuban bread at an Army officer to declare war? And then immediately surrendered?

This book is is just a hoot and a half. I recommend it for everyone. Warning: It will make you want to go to Key West to see it for yourself. Long live the Conch Republic!
