My plan for a quiet night at home is dashed when, during the rescue of my landlady’s runaway cat, a serial killer — nicknamed the Grim Reaper by the media — decides I’m his next victim.
It’s a fight to the death, and despite being a gold-medal klutz, I somehow manage to turn the tables on him and end his life instead.
Imagine my shock when I discover he actually was a grim.
His robes have now chosen me to take his place, and I’m contractually obligated to the Soul Management Group for a full year. Yep, three hundred and sixty-five days until I’m free from these disgusting robes and a death blade with a mind of its own — it wants to kill everyone.
Worse, my new boss, Death, has paired me with the local master vampire to investigate a rogue reaper. Our assignment will take us into the evil underbelly of the supernatural world, and neither of us may make it out alive.
What’s a girl to do? Guess I’ll have to grim and bare it…
USA TODAY Bestselling Author Misty Evans is celebrating her 100th published novel in 2025. She loves writing urban fantasy, paranormal romance, and mystery/suspense. Under her pen name, Nyx Halliwell, she also writes supernatural cozy mysteries.
When not reading or writing (which is most of the time), she enjoys music, movies, and hanging out with her husband, twin sons, and three spoiled rescue dogs. She’s a crafter at heart and has far too many projects to finish.
For a long time I have had two favorite Urban Fantasy Series, Charley Davidson by Darynda Jones and Kali Sweet by Misty Evans. Based on my enjoyment of Grim and Bare It, also by Misty Evans, I think I will be adding a new series to that favorites list. I am completely sold on this first book in her Accidental Reaper Mystery Series, and I expect my love of Grim and Bare it to grow as I spend more time with Chloe, Ghost, Killian, and even Death. Constant action, an edge of fear, and wonderful characters highlight Misty Evans’s fantastic newest series. I love that Chloe insists on trying to live as normal a life as possible in spite of that terrifying oops that left her as the newest Grim and I love that she is kind-hearted and intelligent. A dark, hot, and mysterious master vampire, Killian is both irritating and kind, and not just to Chloe. Ghost is an adorable Chihuahua-like puppy, until he shifts to his huge and scary persona to protect Chloe and escort souls to heaven. Death is going to take a little longer to warm up to even with his seductive personality and sense of humor, but I really expect to come to like him, too. I loved this novel and can’t wait to spend more time with these awesome characters. I requested an ARC directly from author Misty Evans who was kind enough to approve my request. Who wants to wait for a book that is sure to be amazing? I review all the books I love as soon as I can and I am positive that a lot of my friends, even those who like me are mostly over the urban fantasy phase, will be as entranced by the story and characters of Grim and Bare It as I was.
Came across this as a recommendation and read it in one day. Pretty good book. Ghost is my favorite character even though I’m not a dog person 😬😬 it’s going to be interesting to learn more about Chloe and learning what she is and her powers.
Every once in a while, I like to read a vampire romance / urban fantasy. And I’m glad I chose this one! Well written, well plotted. I really took to the main character, Chloe. And I loved the author’s sense of humor. This was a true pageturner!
This is a wonderful start to a new series. Chloe is a busy girl, two jobs and a full time veterinary student, yet she always is the first one to help others. While helping a friend, she encounters a reaper that changes the rest of her life. What follows is a bit of humor and lots of mayhem, keeping me turning pages just as quickly as possible.
I loved the characters and can't wait to learn more about the mysterious Killian. Sexy vampire for the win!
This is a stand alone novel, but I'm already looking forward to future books in this series. The author is on my must read authors' list.
I'm a fan of grim reaper or reaper-related stories (ex: banshees) so took a chance in this one. It starts off fairly fast paced but stalls a few chapters in and doesn't really recover. I started skimming about half way through.
Chloe was a lackluster character for me. She's experienced tragedy, is letting it control her, and she sloughs through life that seems so grey when she describes it. She lacks personality, I think, and the story does show her developing some spine but honestly what else is there to say about her? She doesn't stand up for herself, doesn't take care of herself, and seems to be doing her best to be wallpaper in her own life story rather than the main character. She's clumsy, which is such an early oughts trope (hello, Twilight), and is one of those tropes that basically embraces the sexism of the MC being a delicate female who can't even walk without hurting herself so of course she needs a male to rescue her. At least the final confrontation scene was less rescue and more giving some aid. I suspect I was supposed to find her clumsiness charming or endearing, and the initial fight with the grim funny because of it. Sadly, I was neither amused nor enthralled.
The special powers slash magical unicorn spin was disappointing and unsurprising. She's magically good at using the scythe but she does not practice. There is no reward for hard work here, just immediate ability used effectively but awkwardly. Chloe is useless without that scythe nearby, which makes her exponentially less interesting to me because there is no skill development or journey. Just bam, powers.
To that end, the plot was light. Unskilled Chloe kicks butt, figures out who the bad person is based in a social media search (and presumably gut instinct since the thread there is microscopic) and saves the day (sort of). From a mystery standpoint, it wraps up too fast with little in the way of evidence or reason. Too much of the plot is spent in Chloe's head, and all to often she's making googley eyes at the love interest because said love interest"s eyes are malty or their voice makes her shiver. The insta lust was tedious and hard to buy, but at least it's a slow burn and nothing happens other than making eyes at each other. That was more than enough to sacrifice to plot development, considering I found the chemistry nonexistent and the interest creepy. Add in a friend of the MC who seems to place her value on dating a male, any male, and trying to force normative relationship and sexual values on Chloe like it's her job to be pushy and devalue Chloe as an individual...the messages become unsavory.
If you don't mind a light plot, normative romance book behaviors and tropes, and enjoy a slow burn and/or grim reaper and vampire stuff, you may enjoy this. For me, this book lacked both plot and desirable/believable romance, and had a FMC who just wasn't intriguing enough to carry the story. I also prefer something more woke these days regarding race, sexuality, women's rights, and so forth. Something that harkens back to the romances of the oughts isn't going to cut it for me anymore.
Chloe Frost, college student, studying to be a vet, holding down 2 jobs and then to top it off she becomes a Grim Reaper, tweener after one fateful night she steps in to help only to lose her life before it was her time and a gorgeous master vampire saves her… sigh it’s gonna be a fine romance right??? Well it may build into something eventually with Killion but for now we have sassy Chloe trying not to stumble over her own feet and figuring out her new supernatural life. This book was engaging, funny and adventurous, I loved it. Great characters, awesome settings, wonderful plot with plenty of twists and turns I’m so excited for more in this new series.
In a rare instance for me, the ending is what brought the book rating down (by one star). At the start, I enjoyed the world building and the characters. The plot had some promise, but things sort of went downhill, towards the end. The author tried to connect the conflicts to each other, but I didn't comprehend/believe the logic. The bad guy's motivations weren't well developed, and the MC figuring out the identity of the bad guy didn't make sense. The MC seemed to change her personality and throw a fit at the end just to make the ending happen. Then all of the sudden after the big fight, the MC is over all her previous pettiness and drama.
Overall, the book was entertaining enough that I finished it, but I won't be continuing the series. I almost shelved this as romance as well, since it had some romance elements, but I don't know if it was real and the series will be a slow burn, or if it was just in service to the plot for this book.
An easily solved mystery with light character development and plot I'm not a fan of the FMC, but the world has potential, and if the FMC’s complete attitude change is any indication, it may resolve itself. I’ll give this book a 2-star rating because the world has potential.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
I believe it is not a bad story, some readers might enjoy it if you have time and don't mind semi-cardboard characters. Sometimes that's all you need for the moment. Besides, the MC is a vet student (yay!!!), so there's that.
However, for my part, having read up until book two, I will not continue with the story. It had too much of a twilight feeling (regarding the old, and hopefully dead, tropes). There was the normal human turned special snowflake and the ancient or very, very old vampire as our romantic interest (As our MC said more than once, eww). Not to mention, our MC got away with everything she wanted and had zero consequences, so nothing mattered at the end.
I found myself skimming through paragraphs and not really caring about the characters. Also, this is NOT a slow burn at all. It's just slow-paced with insta-lust. It took me a moment to realize that... I just didn't get immersed enough in the story, and I had to leave it at that. Such a shame, since it promised a lot.
Spoilers ahead. I'd suggest you reach your own conclusions about the story and see for yourself. Maybe this is exactly the story for you!
Chloe, a college student with two jobs, is out chasing down her landlady's cat when she stumbles upon a serial killer dressed as the Grim Reaper who has someone in his grip. Chloe springs to action to save the girl and is soon in a fight to the death. She manages to overcome the man ending his life then she is saved by a vampire named Killion. That's when she discovers that the man was an actual grim and his robes have chosen her to replace him. Now she knows that the supernatural is real and she must work with Killion to catch the rogue grims.
I received an ARC of this book and this is my honest, unbiased review. I'm new to the books of Misty Evans, but I'll definitely be reading more. I truly enjoyed this book which is original and unlike any paranormal book I've read before. The well-written and magical tale drew me in and kept me hooked from beginning to end. This is the first book in a new series and it's an absolutely fantastic start. I loved the various characters and the relationships are well-done. Chloe and Killion are wonderful together and I would love to see them as more than partners in a job. There's humor and suspense in this story which will stick with afterwards and leave you eager for the next book. I certainly look forward to it and I highly recommend this book.
OK, so it's a given for me to love any Misty Evans' books, such a talent for several different genres, but this one really grabbed me from the get go!
Chloe is at college training to be a vet, works in a coffee shop to pay bills, as well as helping out in a mortuary office!
As if her life isn't complicated enough, a chance encounter with a real live..?... Grim Reaper attempting to kill an aquaintance, results in Chloe killing the reaper and recieving an unbreakable contract to replace him for one year!!
What is a girl to do?
Well with no choice but to fulfill the role once the Reaper robes and scythe choose her to replace said, dead Reaper, and a delicious, sexy vamp master as her partner, Chloe has no choice.
What follows is madness, mayhem, ghostly encounters, spirit attacks and sexy Mr Death popping in and out of her life with his Aussie accent to teach/check/advise her. A spiritual romp that will have you marvelling, wondering and laughing out loud throughout the entire story.
If you like humour with your fantasy excitement and characters that will stay in your mind long after the book ends...this is certainly one for you! Loved every single page of this one.
Yikes! As if two jobs and being a student in college to become a veterinarian isn’t enough, now she finds herself in her newest life situation after a Grim Reaper was attacking a student when Chloe happened along and stopped him by killing the Reaper. Unbeknownst to her, now she would have to fulfill the position of a Grim since she interfered by saving the student. Life just can’t get any more complicated…or can it??? It's not all bad. She met a dreamy guy who just happens to be a vampire, ghosts, and Death himself who is gorgeous, too! Unfortunately, with all of the strange encounters she hasn’t had the chance to even enjoy the scenery before she is thrust into a world where nothing is familiar and life is dark, dangerous, and hectic. How does a person deal with all of this change? Chloe does it with snarky comments, humor, strength, determination, and a whole lot of help which includes her new puppy named Ghost. This book has such a fun fantasy storyline and so much action that you just need to read it for yourself. I couldn’t make myself put the book down until I had read the last page. If you are looking for some fun and fast-paced action, then this is a must-read! Grab your copy and enjoy the fun. Happy reading.
Grim & Bare It is the first in the series of the Accidental Reaper by Misty Evans. Chloe is the average student who works two jobs just to pay the rent and her schooling. All Chloe wants is a good night’s sleep! While trying to relax in a warm bath, Vera her landlady needs help finding her cat, Mis Pickles, who ran out the house during the rain storm. After finding the darn cat Chloe hears screaming and it sounded just like Darcy who’s in Chemistry class with Chloe and her friend, Nita. Chloe finds Darcy dazed and confused while the monster tried to kill her. Chloe jumps into action to save Darcy only to be the monster’s new target! I needed to kill him or be killed! I used his own weapon against him “the scythe” and he died. Her savior, a vampire giving her blood to bring her back to life. Chloe now is in position of cloak and scythe that was on the dead man. Poor Chloe has no idea what she has gotten herself into…a whole year working for the Soul Management Group! What else can happen after this night??
I loved this story and couldn’t put it down until I finished. I loved how Misty Evans brought the characters to life! I can’t wait to read the next one. I was given this ARC by the author for my honest opinion. Go get the book!
(FYI I tend to only review one book per series, unless I completely change my mind on a series, so want to change my scoring down a lot. -- I tend not to read reviews until after I read a book, so I go in with an open mind.)
I guessed the baddie from the start, but still enjoyed the book.
First time read the author's work?: Yes
Will you be reading more?: Yes
Would you recommend?: Yes
------------ How I rate Stars: 5* = I loved (must read all I can find by the author) 4* = I really enjoyed (got to read all the series and try other books by the author). 3* = I enjoyed (I will continue to read the series) or 3* = Good book just not my thing (I realised I don't like the genre or picked up a kids book to review in error.)
All of the above scores means I would recommend them! - 2* = it was okay (I might give the next book in the series a try, to see if that was better IMHO.) 1* = Disliked
Note: adding these basic 'reviews' after finding out that some people see the stars differently than I do - hoping this clarifies how I feel about the book. :-)
What a treat! Grim and Bare It was an entertaining story with loveable characters. Chloe is a college student trying to make ends meet when she is whisked into a role she doesn't want and isn't comfortable in. She is paired with a snooty vampire mentor (Killion) who feels above training her but doesn't really have a choice.
Killion and Chloe scenes were my favorite. They start out with a little bit of a love/hate relationship in the sense that neither wants to be in the situation but they have to find a way to work through it. It's life or death after all! Another favorite part of the story is Death. He is such a mystery and am not quite sure if I like him. He does have an intrigue about him that makes you want to know more rather than run the other way.
Characters and relationships are always my favorite parts of books, but in Grim and Bare It we also get a lot of action scenes that I really enjoyed! The book is a page turner for sure. I can't wait to see what situations Chloe and Killion find themselves in the next book of the series!
I loved this book! Chloe is a college student working two part time jobs. She just doesn't have time for anything besides work and school. Well her landlady needs her to go find her lost cat and this is when Chloe's life takes a turn for the worst? She finds the cat but ends up running in to the serial killer that has been all over the news. It seems one of her friends from school is on his hit list and Chloe steps in to save her only to end up being on his list too. Things happen that change her life and it seems there is nothing that she can do to get her old life back. ( I do not want to say too much) If you love a well written book, one with twists and turns, a lot of action, well developed characters and an original story. If you love vampires, especially handsome, sweet old vampires then you will love Killion. My thoughts on Death are still out. I mean he is well written but I can not decide if he is a good guy or a bad guy. Still I don't think it would be hard to work for him. Snap this one up you will love it, but you might miss out on a good nights sleep.
So I can always tell if ill like a book Within the first couple of chapters, I tried to continue further, but just couldn't. This is the second book I've bought this month where the lead female character is backed into/semi forced into a position she doesn't choose willingly and only momentarily balks About at. Then she's friendly towards characters who forced her into this situation, and does what they order and just accepts them never answering her questions regarding HER life. I get that all of this is Probably part of her 'character building' and adds mystery but to me, its more like character break down. It doesn't show me a strong female lead, it shows me a follower. Who just goes along with someone screwing up her life and constantly put her life in danger and wants to turn her into a killer?!? COMMON!! As u can tell its pet peeve of mine.
Chloe is a college student studying to become a vet to reopen her parents vet clinic. When a serial killer is on the loose, she crosses him trying to kill his next victim; only she gets caught in the crossfire. Saved by a man named Killion who possesses weird magic, she embarks on a new journey contracted for one year…a grim reaper. She meets other vamps, Death himself, shades and will go on a journey to find the real killer. In between two jobs, school, and volunteer work…who has time to reap others? The lead female is a snarky adorable character who will make you fall in love with her. Killion is the lead male character and you will want him and Chloe to be together~ this is the beginning of a new series that will be fun and exciting~
This is an offbeat Grim Reaper story. Chloe, the poor girl, is overworked with multiple jobs an college courses. A good deed changes her life when, trying to save a fellow student from being attacked, she inadvertently kills a "grim reaper" and now must take its place! While it is the first in a series and they can take awhile to world build, I felt this dragged out portions of the story, made me lose interest, and skim some areas. The characters have potential. Chloe needs to accept and grow into her new role but I haven't seen her dimension yet. The sexy vampire assigned to train her could become interesting. It just did not grab my whole attention and make me care about the characters enough to want to continue with their story. Just ok for me.
I am a fan of Misty Evan's romantic suspense so when i was given an opportunity to read a paranormal romance of hers I jumped at it and I am so glad that I did This is a fast paced fun read with engaging characters that had me chuckling at times The cast of Killian the exotic vampire who i am sure will become the love interest Death who is a dark character that will grow on us and sweet adorable Ghost the sweet puppy until he isn't and tying all this together is veterinarian student Chloe the girl with so much already on her plate who becomes the latest reaper dying in the process and saved by Killian. I can see many adventures for this crew into the future
This book was a great start to a new series. Chloe, the main character, is a busy full-time veterinary student, she holds down two jobs, and she always is the first person to help others. While out in the woods, helping a fellow student from her class, Chloe encounters a reaper that drastically changes her life. There is a lot of humor and chaos in this book; it kept me turning the pages.
I loved the characters in this book; I look forward to learning more about the mysterious vampire Killian.
This book was fun; I'm excited for future books in this series.
How does killing the grim reaper change your life? Well Chloe, hard working Veterinarian student, is about to find out. Seems she has a one year contract with the Soul Management Group to take his place. She inherits his robes(yuk) and his death blade which wants to kill everyone. Then she is paired with the local master vampire to find a rogue reaper. Can they survive? Couldn’t put down the ARC I received as I delved into the pages hoping for a happy ending.
Grim and Bare It is the first in The Accidental Reaper Series by Misty Evans. This is a fun, cool take on being a reaper. We meet Chloe who is a college student with a couple jobs. She works hard so she can pay for school. She goes out in a rain storm to help her neighbor and she runs into trouble. This is a slow burn story. Its a neat take on the way a reaper becomes a reaper. Looking forward to the next one.
I found the story and world intriguing but for such a self proclaimed nerd or study girl she sure ignored a source of information for her to not have to get answers from the two guys popping in and out. Other than that I enjoyed her story and her path. The mystery was easily solved with the hints but it didn’t detract from enjoyment.
I really enjoyed this book. It was not perfect but it was a book that took you somewhere else! I enjoyed the female lead, she was well written to her role. However, Death sounded more like an insecure man then an eternal being. Love the “dog” and the plot! It was interesting and moved at a good pace. Worth the read!
I would give this book more stars if possible. These characters , especially Death, had me laughing out loud more than once. If you are looking for a fun read and a the start of great new series, read this book!
I first fell in love with Misty as a writer when I discovered her Kali Sweet series many years ago. I have read all of her other books afterwards but I am so glad that she went back to a paranormal series! I have been waiting years for this to happen and can’t wait for the next two books!
Interesting take on Grim Reapers, with a dash of Death and a scrumptious Vampire. I liked that the MC stayed true to her friends and went toe to toe with Death himself. Lots of fun to read! Can't wait for the next book. Read this one in one sitting.
I like the characters but I'm feeling somewhat of a disconnect between me and the book. Normally I would be in love with the characters in this type of book but my admiration has not risen to that level.
