This book was written by my father's first cousin. It chronicals the story of the Smith & Powers families, early pioneers in the Kern River Valley in Kern County, California. Bob writes as though he is talking to you, just telling a story. But his research & first hand knowledge of the area are superb. If you get a chance, read this book. It will give you a much better perspective on the hard lives of early pioneer families. When you're done with this one, there are eight additional books written by Bob, all about this most interesting time and place in our local history.
