If you are someone who is obsessed with the hustle culture, here comes a book that will teach you how to slow down and enjoy each and every moment in life.
Rosa Temple tells us the story of Daniel, who suddenly becomes jobless. Being a product of the hustle culture, he finds it difficult to do nothing in his hometown. So he starts a new walking club where he meets many interesting personalities. Hazel, an eighty-year-old lady, is one among them with whom he develops an amazing friendship. The author tells us all the events that happened in Daniel's life through this novel.
What I learned from this book
1) Can you give cow's milk or tuna to your cat?
Cats are considered to be picky eaters. The author is sharing some information that will help many cat lovers here.
Cat's digestive system is unable to process dairy foods. So if you give dairy products like cows milk, they will have diarrhea. Similarly, if cats are given too much tuna, they will have mercury poisoning.
We can see Daniel's character getting confused with deciding what to give the cat to eat.
“You can’t give cats cows milk or tuna. Most are lactose intolerant and there is mercury in tuna."
2) What can we tell your friend who has had a breakup?
Daniel is shown in a struggling phase with a breakup here by the author. The advice given by Hazel to Daniel is pretty simple but still very effective.
"I am sure she loved you, but not maybe she loved you in the right way. One day you will find the woman who will. You are still young."
3) What is the problem associated with Dating apps today?
The author reveals the fakeness associated with dating apps today in this novel.
"Apparently, all the men of my age want women of half their age in dating apps. Can you imagine? If I ever wrote a profile of my own saying that I want a tall and handsome younger man to go out with, I probably get deleted. It is because men get away with absolutely everything."
My favourite three lines from this book
“The thing to remember is don’t maintain eye contact until he is used to your essence.”
“What happens in babysitting stays in babysitting.”
“Sometimes the things you least expect to happen happens.”
What could have been better?
The love triangle and the characters' confusion might appear as a cliche to some readers.

I am so glad this book reached me just when I needed a warm hug in the form of a feel good book. And I was missing an awesome warm read which highlights what a good community is made of.
This book is just that and it made me believe in people again!
The highlights of the book are the characters. They are so real and totally convincing. Though the book demands a relaxing read, I didn’t find any part which was extra or extended. Every page had something really comforting. Yes, some parts did poke my heart! I could relate so much with Daniel right from the very beginning. Psst…. I have always felt I could not survive in a slow lane part but now I am starting to reconsider. (Good books do this a lot you know!)
Main things in the story are quite relatable when it comes to changing our living environment, family dynamics, getting to know a new community through someone new, and introducing a good idea which is good but we are all reluctant to take part in. Just thinking about walking is more tiring than the actual walk we all know. Damn.
But the characters did a trick and I do have to walk because I adore Daniel so much! Hazel, you are magic.
More of a character driven story, the book offers you a warm welcome to a quite small community and encourages you to connect with people and most importantly with yourself in the process.

I loved reading The Slow Lane Walkers Club with its settings in Cornwall as it brought back my childhood memories .

This novel is a gorgeous, warm uplifting story about friendship, and the joy of walking.
I have been wanting to read this book from the moment I see it on social media, as I read and enjoyed Natalie’s getting Married by Rosa Temple.
The key points of this story is it’s not going fast that matters. It’s getting there together. And helping your family at the time when it’s needed the most.
The Slow Lane Walkers Club is about Daniel who isn’t quite used to living his life in the slow lane.
He has travelled from Sicily where he worked long hours, and has now returned back to his hometown in Cornwall by his sister’s request, to help sort out their grandmother’s house that has been left to them both.
Daniel was always working so much as a tour guide for walkers hiking up Mount Etna, he was out of touch and didn’t even know that his sister is an Instagram influencer with loads of followers.
Daniel feels quite guilty that he has inherited his grandmother’s house when he knew so little about his grandmother.
Around his grandmother’s house are photographs of him and his sister with his Gran, but he couldn’t remember if his gran him sweets or cuddles.
With Daniel’s experience of hiking, he hits on an idea, to arrange a walkers club in his hometown in Cornwall, where he meets Hazel who may have a walking stick, but she’s fit as a fiddle.
Rosa Temple certainly knows how to put the biggest smile on readers faces, as a big surprise is waiting for Daniel’s thirty-first birthday and it isn’t a cake and balloons.

There are some books that not only entertain you but consume you and get underneath your skin. Books that feel like a hug and one that you really feel speaks to you.
I really felt for Daniel. He’s returned home to Cornwall due to life not turning out the way he had hoped. He thinks he’s back to square one in life but then he meets someone, someone very ordinary, who turns out to be extraordinary in so many ways.
The story is about walking and taking time to slow down in life, taking a direction you may not have considered before and not being afraid to stray from the path. The idea of a walking club appealed to the booktrailer in me and I really now want to walk around Cornwall as the places Daniel visits sound just divine!
Daniel and Hazel are not two people you would place together, One young, one old with seemingly nothing in common. Well you’d be wrong. I was wrong to think that these two would be nothing more than walking buddies. The friendship that grows is heartwarming and utterly lovely.
I felt this book had a number of messages contained within it. The fact that life goes too fast and if we slow down, it’s amazing what you see and who you meet. How lovely to have such a kind and heartwarming story to remind ourselves of this. Read it and use its wisdom in life. I am very pleased that I got to meet Daniel and Hazel. Oh to be sitting somewhere in Cornwall having a coffee with them now.
I really wish I could jump into the book and make friends with Hazel in particular. Next time I am walking somewhere, in the slow lane of course, I am going to imagine her and Daniel beside me.

We meet Daniel, after just inheriting his Gran’s house in Cornwall along with his sister. He goes to sort it out and get it ready to sell. Having just returned from abroad working as a walking guide Daniel decides to set up his walking club, when only Hazel turns up, a neighbour a few doors down they soon realise they have a bond and Hazel sets about telling Daniel stories of his Gran that he never knew.
Daniel really doesnt want to be in Cornwall after a falling out with his father and wants to wrap things up there as quick as he can.
Soon Daniel gets a blast from the past, will he decide to stay and turn his life around or will he up sticks and leave!?.
There is some great supporting characters in this story and you will feel invested in the lives of them.
Without giving too much away you have to read it yourself.
Rosa Temple once again delivers such a feel good story, although no big surprises or twists this book will leave you smiling and wanting nothing but the best for Daniel and Hazel.

The Slow Lane Walkers Club is a pure and gentle read – a book genuinely good for the soul. With its endearing friendships and its evocative feel of the waves crashing and all the beautiful sights Cornwall has to offer, Rosa Temple’s latest novel was a true delight.
When we meet Daniel, he has just returned to Cornwall. His gran has passed away and left her house to him and his sister, Ananabelle, and he sets about clearing out her belongings. Having left his old job behind, he is at a crossroads with no real idea what he wants to do with the rest of his life. In his early thirties – is now really the time he should be settling down? It was refreshing to read a book like this that centred on a male main character and I liked Daniel straight away.
One of the first things Daniel does is create a new walking club in the hope of making friends whilst he’s back in Cornwall. Though he only gives a few days notice before the first walk, he had hoped for more than just the one person to turn up. Especially given that the one person to turn up is Hazel, the strange old lady in crocs who he’d been trying to avoid. But as I and Daniel soon discover, Hazel is a real character with plenty of tales to tell. She’s kind, entertaining and full of spirit – and maybe a walk is worth slowing down for, for the chance to build an unlikely friendship.
It took its time to build in personnel but The Slow Lane Walkers Club became this lovely community with a mix of characters with different temperaments and at different stages in life. I loved the contrast between them and their “rival” walking club, the Padstow Pace Masters. The Pace Masters were all about speeding on and rushing to their destination whereas the Slow Lane Walkers took things at a much steadier pace. They would chat away, take breaks for snacks and gossip and a spot of matchmaking and always had an eye on their surroundings. The walking club members were interesting characters, if sometimes a bit annoying with their obsession with Daniel’s love-life, and the dynamics between them all were fascinating.
I think one reason why I enjoyed this book so much was that I felt like there was so much of me in it. I moved to the seaside a few years ago and for me, nothing beats a walk on the clifftops taking in the nature and the sea views. When the members of Daniel and Hazel’s walking club stop their walk because they’re distracted by conversation or by the sight of a bird flying past, I felt like this was my life in a book and I was a part of their club.
There were so many positive messages within the pages of The Slow Lane Walkers Club. This is a book about embracing the people in life, about slowing down and really taking in what’s around you. From the people you meet to the sights you see, there can be so much more to gain from a gentle walk instead of racing from place to place with no awareness of the world around you.
I could relate plenty to some of the characters in this book and often found myself a cross between Jess and Daniel. I could identify with them both, especially the way they feel when everybody around them seems settled and like they know what they’re doing with life, when they’re still stuck in limbo. But as this book seems to put across, you should live life at your own pace. There is no need to always put pressure on yourself to plan out exactly what your future holds when you can let life lead you there.
There was so much to love about this book. Set at a relaxing pace, it’s a lovely uplifting summery read with kind characters and heart-warming friendships. Hazel is the star of the show (closely followed by Bill the cat and his empty dish) and provides plenty of light to the story as well as some more touching moments. I enjoyed every chapter and really didn’t want the book to end but I love that the author didn’t feel the need to wrap everything up so perfectly as it keeps the characters still fresh in my mind. I feel like the Slow Lane Walkers may be accompanying me on my next walk…

Daniel lives life in the fast lane! Until he has to come back to Cornwall to sort out his grandmother's house which has been left to his sister and him. Daniel cannot wait until he is able to move on to his next adventure. Until he meets Hazel and starts a Saturday walking club. Will Daniel be able to live life in the slow lane ? Will he settledown or continue to move from country to country.
The title was the thing that drew me into this book. I have recently heard some good reviews from other readers about this book and how it made it into their 2022 top 10.
The characters are mainly all heart warming and make you feel like they could just engulf you with a hug and all will be OK. Particularly Hazel who is the grandmother figure for the group. Whilst you are next to her encouraging Daniel, Greg and Dox to make the right choices in their life to enable them the peace of settling down.
This book is a great read all year round and you never feel that you are missing anything from the story line allowing you to follow it through until the end with confidence. With some twists and turns thrown in particularly about 3/4 through.
Their are some emotional subjects included in this book such as accidents, divorce, single parents, racism amongst other things. I do not feel this takes away from the romcom feel of the book and I feel actually gives each character a third dimension to get your teeth into. Whilst being representative of the trials and tribulations felt in 20th and 21st century society. I really feel this author is trying 5o bring taboo subjects to the forefront. Making you think and reflect on your own community and life. Through the use of fiction particularly romance fiction which is something very special with her writing.
However I did find the first 20% very repetitive surrounding why Daniel didn't visit his Grandmother and how he was now at the house to clear it. Whilst there was little description surrounding his environment and feelings. After this though the book evened put and became a page turner and I read it in 48 hours.

However I did find the first 20% very repetitive surrounding why Daniel didn't visit his Grandmother and how he was now at the house to clear it. Whilst there was little description surrounding his environment and feelings. After this though the book evened put and became a page turner and I read it in 48 hours.

Daniel is 30 and has been working in Sicily as a walking tour guide for the last five years, but he is now back home in Cornwall, where his sister Annabelle lives with her husband Scott, daughter Mia (6) and son Rasmus (4).
Daniel and Annabelle have inherited their grandmother’s cottage and need to decide what to do with it. Moving from Sicily to the quiet Cornish village of Trevone is a big change for Daniel, so he soon comes up with an idea to get out and meet local people – the Saturday Walkers Club. He is particularly hoping the blonde woman he keeps seeing around will turn up…
However, only one person turns up to join him on his Saturday walk – Hazel, who is widowed, originally from Trinidad, in her eighties and lives nearby. Daniel is disappointed, but as they begin to walk, Hazel tells him how she was good friends with his late grandmother Molly. Daniel hadn’t had much to do with his grandmother in recent years, but now he can learn something new, by seeing her through Hazel’s eyes.
I love novels where strong friendships are made between characters from different generations, such as in Libby Page’s The Lido or Hazel Prior’s Away with the Penguins and this also fits that remit beautifully.
There are some great characters here. I love the character of Hazel particularly in The Slow Lane Walkers Club, she is so full of life and fascinating! The cat is great too and the little girl Mia is just brilliantly realistic!
There’s a lot good to say about this book. I like the length of the chapters. It was very easy to get into and is a really enjoyable read. I will look forward to reading more of Rosa Temple’s novels in the future.

PREFACE: I feel bad rating any book badly, I’m sure lots of people would love it, but it just was not for me (I’m sorry to the author I am not going to hold back)
Didn’t like this book AT ALL - I didn’t actually even finish it but with 2 hours left and the fact I can already predict exactly what will happen I’m not finishing it, I even had to listen to the last hour that I could manage on 2x speed just to get through it.
The characters are so un-nuanced and rely on awful pick me stereotypes to compare two of the girls, the story is just as the title is - slow lane, but yet none of the logistics of how time works made sense- he managed to empty his grandmothers entire house in like a few days?! And also just the fact he acted like he moved away when he was 5 so had no memories of anything when if u think about the timeline it was when he was like 20 so I don’t understand how he doesn’t “know” certain people
Also the audiobook is another thing - i felt fairy uncomfortable from the start with the narrator being a white guy doing the accent of a black woman - just felt off
Anyway I would not recommend but once again I am just one person so probs could be someone else’s fav !

Sometimes all I want to read is something gentle and easy on the mind. The Slow Lane Walkers Club fits the bill very well and is as heartwarming as it is uplifting.
An endearing tale of an unlikely friendship between an elderly lady and her new, young neighbour, the book has a slow pace like it’s title, but you are compelled to keep reading. It is a stress-free zone, ideal for reading in the sun with a glass of wine or by the fire with a hot chocolate!

I absolutely loved Hazel, she was a force to be reckoned with from the first waving of her walking stick!
The sense of Community was so heartwarming in this story - I would love to be part of a club made up of such a great group of people!

The Slow Lane Walkers Club couldn’t have come into my life at a more apt time as I have just started taking up regular walks so I was looking forward to reading this book by Rosa Temple.
Daniel is pulled back to his home town in Cornwall by his sister when their Grandmother leaves her house to them but there is a lot of work to be done before they can sell it. As keen as his sister Annabelle is that this visit home may make him settle down and place roots, Daniel is eager to the opposite because being tied down is not for him.
Hazel is in her eighties and having lost her husband and now her friend who is Daniels Grandmother she decides to join Daniel’s new walking club and before long the pair form an unlikely strong friendship that really touches the readers hearts whilst Daniel learns a lesson or two along the way.
The idea of a walking club as a central part of a novel is a new concept for me and one I really enjoyed. Bringing a mix of personalities from all different walks of life together for a variety of reasons may that be to improve health and fitness or to meet new people and socialise this was a great way of bringing a variety of characters together to show Daniel that life in his old home town isn’t somewhere he needs to run away from but he can be a part of the community and help those around him in a number of ways.
Daniel definitely has a sense of loss around him and as much as he liked adventure and spontaneity it felt like this was to mask the fact that he didn’t know who he was or what he really wanted and being pulled home kicking and screaming by his sister gave him time to grow up and really think about his life.
Hazel is our little treasure in this book, he is a straight talking no-nonsense older lady who is determined to carry on as she pleases and she has a heart of gold and brings a little humour to the storyline too. The friendship that both her and Daniel develop is heartwarming and it seems the mothering guidance he missed out on growing up is more than being made up for with Hazel’s matter of fact advice that she delivers to him now.
There is a little romance that flows through the storyline but I have to say I would have loved to have seen a little more of Jess in this book but this is me just being greedy!
I thoroughly enjoyed this book it was a light read with friendship and self-discovery at the heart. Now where are my walking shoes I am off for a walk!

Hazel used to be adventurous too. But now widowed and in her eighties, she barely leaves the house. So when she sees an advert for Daniel's new walking club, she grabs at the chance of some excitement.
Daniel's heart sinks when he sees that the only person who turned up for his walking club is the crazy old lady from two doors down.
How often do we look at the older people around us that are unknown to us and think, wow, I bet they have had an exciting life. I think a majority of us would probably look and feel saddened that they are approaching their twilight years.
This story teaches us that we have a lot to miss by not talking to our elders; the rich amount of knowledge they have accumulated, and the things they have seen and done in their lives, it's like opening a treasure chest to their past and the past.
The old saying 'Don't judge a book by its cover' comes to mind.

I fear that I tend to rate books highly right after I’ve read them, especially if they have a strong emotional impact on me. Or if they cause me to put the book down in awe (or disbelief??). This one was awe. I should probably let this one simmer before rating it, but I just appreciated this slow town and slow paced book so much.
I’m a sucker for a coming of age story, or books with some nice character development, and seeing Daniel mature, then face natural set backs (that I could relate to so much!) was a nice non linear progression we rarely see nowadays.
This book also included one of my favorite characters in a book, ever. Hazel. She is soooo iconic, and I can only aspire to be as cool, loving, and heartwarming as her.
Also, I loved that the central focal theme of this book was about community, and finding a community/group that one belongs in. This is something I feel is so important for anyone, of any age, and I liked the mature tackling of the importance of community. There was no nonsense in Temple’s discussion of how communities can change some people’s lives. Sometimes it’s all somebody has. It was refreshing, to see the impact the slow Lane walkers club had on Trevone, and it’s charming cast of characters. People think it’s cringy to value a silly club so much, I think it’s beautiful.
My last book taught me how to fall in love with myself, this book reminded me that I love reading.
One of my favorite books of the year! A slow read, but an upbeat and charismatic one, that’ll have you smiling to the end.

What a refreshing read. I loved this book.
This book is very much a feel good book, an easy going read, easy on the brain and warm on the heart. A must for anyone who would like a lesson in slowing life down, it is possible. A lovely story, gives you a warm hug.
Set in Cornwall, fast paced living Daniel has a temporary stay in Cornwall and meets up with a neighbour for some walks.
Daniel gets to know a bit more about himself on his journey, a bit more about the world and life. From this he reassesses and learns to slow the pace of life down. No spoilers but a really lovely story which lifts your spirits and makes you smile.

I loved every minute reading this book. it's a very sweet, upbeat book that will make you smile! I felt the plot was predictable throughout, but in a comforting way, making it seem familiar rather than boring. :)

I really enjoyed this endearing story. Although you’d think that Daniel would be the main focus, and he’s certainly a very significant character, it was Hazel who I really took to heart. I loved her feistiness and determination. The stories she told Daniel about her past adventures were brilliant and the way he helped her really showed how different generations have a lot to teach each other. He certainly discovered that he had a lot to learn from the wisdom of elders.
The Slow Lane Walkers Club – the actual club not the book – started out unpromisingly and you could really feel Daniel’s despair that he hadn’t had much response to his idea. What he started though became a real part of the community, and the friendship and support the group gave to each other was heart-warming. As well as being an outlet for his energy, it opened up opportunities he hadn’t really considered. He learned so much about his own grandmother from Hazel and regretted never having taken the time to learn her story.

Sometimes, you just need an unexpected friend to show you that life is unpredictable and that you should do all you can to make the most of it.
This fabulously written book gave me so much joy! I loved the fact that the romance wasn't the main focus. As much as I love a romance, this gave so much more. The message about taking more time for family, listening to stories more, finding out about relatives histories and finding your path in life for yourself not because of stubbornness was beautifully portrayed.
Seeing the chemistry between a group of people who might not otherwise have been put together was so fun. This group for walkers which was ultimately, more about the friendships and the camaraderie between them (and the snack breaks!) were individually really well written. I could picture them and I know a couple of characters that are similar in my own life.
I have to say though...
I NEED a Hazel in my life. We ALL NEED a Hazel in our lives.

The copy of the Slow Lane Walkers Club arrived in my life when I needed a book to escape into and this was the perfect book for the job. Daniel is the first main character we get to know and I quickly realised how few books I read with a male main character.
Daniel has reached a point in his life when he is thinking of making changes. His relationship with his parents has disintegrated but his sister is keen for him to move back to Cornwall. Daniel isn’t so keen and can’t see himself staying long.
Having been working as a walking guide, Daniel decides to start a local walking group and is initially disappointed when his elderly neighbour, Hazel, is the only member on week one. He is surprised to discover that Hazel and his gran were friends, and slowly starts to discover more about his gran, Hazel and himself. He also discovers the joy in taking life at a slower pace, to discover things about the local area that he had never noticed before.
Hazel is a wonderful character, who appears to know everyone in the local area and who is determined not to let get older stop her enjoying her life.
This is a non spoiler review, so I won’t carry on explaining the story – you need to read it for yourself. However I will confirm that I enjoyed Daniel’s journey of self discovery, which certainly doesn’t go smoothly. The book covers some difficult topics sensitively and there are a few sad moments, but this is ultimately a very uplifting read.
