You probably know it’s good manners to ALWAYS cover your nose when you sneeze. But when Sid forgets this very simple rule, the consequences are WILDER than he could ever have predicted.
Get ready for a laugh-out-loud, sneeze-driven joyride, featuring elephants, pirates, acrobats, giants, princesses and a whole lot of pandas. Sneezing will never be the same again!
This joyfully anarchic, side-splittingly funny story is perfect for fans of You Can't Take an Elephant on the Bus and There's a Shark in the Bath.
I received this book from Netgalley/the publisher in exchange of an honest review.
I was so so hyped that I got to review/read this book! I am a big big fan of the illustrator Nathan Reed and just need to have this book! Haha. Plus, that cover and blurb sounded weird and strange and just what I needed. At the moment of reading (June 2nd) I was actually just previewing it to see if I should read it now or not, and then suddenly I was 16 pages in. It was just THAT funny and just THAT thing I needed right now when I am not feeling the best.
In this hilarious book we meet a boy named Sid. Sid is a pretty normal kid.. well until the moment he sneezes and an elephant pops out of his nose. WHAT?! I can hear you all ask me in stumped confusion. Yes, an elephant. A pink one at that. If you think that is just weird, then stop reading now. Because things are getting weirder and weirder. We meet a pirate crew on to hunt for treasure, we go to the circus, and there is just so much more. All the while Sid is sneezing and I had a laugh at what happened around him then. It was weird, silly, strange, hilarious, OMG what now, and just what I needed after a not so happy time. I was giggling and laughing and wondering what would be next. Could it get any sillier? And the answer? A very resounding HECK YES. OMG. This was just the start of the things that happened. I loved the imagination of the author and loved how the illustrator brought it all to life with the illustrations.
That ending though. That was just perfection! Cover your nose! XD (Though this girl is wondering how one holds in a whole circus crew with just the barrier of a tissue?)
I could relate to the MC very much I have to say. OK, sure, my sneezes aren’t explosive and sadly don’t bring me to pirates and neither are things coming out of my nose the size of elephants. Sadly, the only thing that comes out of my nose is snot. Yep, eww. I know. But other than that, I know the feeling of constantly having to sneeze. Constantly going ACHOOO. Especially in the past few months it has been quite a sneezefest. Now I wish my sneezefest could have been way more fun. Mmmm.
The illustrations by Nathan Reed were absolute perfection. I just love his style and it fitted very well with this nonsensical, silly, wonderful book.
All in all, guess who is adding this book to her collection? Yep, this girl is. When the book comes out I want to buy it. Because I need this book. I would HIGHLY recommend this book to all.
Floss (daughter aged 5) just came up to me after I'd picked up the book Achoo! and said - 'oh Mom you really need to read that one it's so funny, you'll love it!'. It really makes me chuckle when she's already snaffled a book away to read it and then gives me a book recommendation. Brilliant.
Well how could I resist an invitation like that?! She's absolutely right it's a fabulous book that will have you chuckling away at the mad antics of Sid and his uncontrollable sneezing. You won't believe the things that come out of his nose. It's a perfect read aloud for both a story at home but would be enormous fun as a class read too.
When I was teaching we'd always get a time of year when coughs and sneezes were prevalent and you'd need to help children to understand about germs, covering their mouths and noses and washing hands. This is even more relevant as we are living in the time of covid. Achoo! would be an ideal, fun way to introduce this topic before looking more deeply at germs. I particularly like the Usborne title What Are Germs? to look at the facts.
Simon Philip has a great rhyming style that bobs you nicely through the text. His vocabulary choices are excited and bold and will thrill young readers as they are developing their lexis. We particularly enjoyed basked, plunge, bewilderment and hullaballoo. Nathan Reed's illustrations pair perfectly with Simon's words. They're dynamic and oozing with humour. The panda spread and the one with an octopus on Sid's head were firm favourites from us both.
Bloomsbury titles are often filled with the wonders of imagination. We'd highly recommend another recent addition from them that's filled with imagination - Penelope Snoop: Ace Detective.
If your looking for some rip-roaring adventure reading this is the picture book for you.
Well, it was colourful, and the rhymed narrative worked a lot of the time, but this busy and bonkers lesson in personal hygiene didn't really appeal. Sid the sneezer manages to let everything go when he sneezes, including decorum and manners, but nobody would guess what comes out his schnozz. It is solely a nonsense poem, but too nonsensical for me – and I fear for the actual health message to come across that brilliantly. I may be proven wrong, and if so then 'Gesundheit!', but personally I'd pass on this.
With bright, fun illustrations and an entertainingly silly, rhyming story this book is sure to amuse young readers aged 3+ As well as being an enjoyable read this could also be a nice, gentle way of opening up a discussion about why it's important to cover your sneezes with young children. Thank you to NetGalley.co.uk and Bloomsbury Publishing for the free eARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.
A great one to end the session on! This zany little rhyming tale see’s a young lad who gets an itchy nose and sneezes out the most bonkers things! There’s a bear in a canoe, which was the least of his worries! A great double page of things flying out the kids nose at one point requires you to turn the book sideways to get all the things tumbling down the page. Great fun, and the kids loved it!
