Closing The Distance

Rate this book
“I can promise you this. As long as you want me around, I’ll be here to remind you what a beautiful and amazing person you are.”

Being a survivor of abuse, a single mom, and not fitting into society's version of attractive– I never thought I would hear those words, especially from someone who was my nemesis on my plant enthusiast message board. So when Jack Kettler, a man much older than I, took notice of me and treated me in a way I had only seen on tv, I couldn’t help but want to open myself up, just one more time.

Two weeks – that’s what we agreed to. I would fly across the country to be with Jack for two weeks to see if what we were feeling over the phone was more than just a crush. So what I got when I walked through the small Kentucky airport was not what I expected.

One dark secret after another made me question who Jack was, what I was getting myself into, and if what I was feeling in my heart was strong enough to survive what I would have to sacrifice for us to be together.

this book is literally amazing i’m currently writing this review at 1am because i refused to go to sleep until i finished this masterpiece. that’s how captivated this book had me. their journey and progress throughout the book had me hooked and i loved the characters so much and the way they connected. i truly loved how the characters had to overcome a bunch of obstacles and really fight for their relationship. plus i truly love how the characters were lower class which is something you really never see in books. i’ve also don’t usually read books with these tropes but i think dj krimmer single handedly made them into some of my favorites. also the smut is amazing 😉

3/5 ⭐️
2.25/5 🌶

Tropes:
- small town romance
- age gap (14yrs) ~ 42 & 28
- single mom (of 5yr old girl)
- single dad (of 17yr old girl)
- tattooed hero & heroine
- california girl x poor kentucky boy
- OW drama (the worst kind)

POV: first person - dual

Type: stand-alone

I was LOVING the story until the cliché moment where the baby mama shows up and the hero fucks up. Everything went downhill so fast, I’m mad bc I was actually enjoying the book so much.

Also the 5yr old was irrelevant for a while there. I wanted to see more interactions with her.

Epilogue was very sweet but it doesn’t fix the frustration and anger (not the good kind) I went through.

I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review

Aurora is a gorgeous late twenties woman who has been through terrible DV from her ex who left her high and dry once he found out she was pregnant. She’s been struggling to be successful with her exotic plant shop, and she now lives with her brother and her 5 year old daughter in California. She actively posts on social media pictures of her and her plants at her shop, and there’s one person who always has some snide remark to try and get under her skin.

Jack lives in Kentucky and is in his late 40s and works labor jobs to barely scrape by to provide for his 16 year old daughter. His ex wife got into drugs really bad and he was luckily able to get full custody of their daughter. In his free time he likes to taunt a woman who is way out of his league on her exotic plant social media page. While he enjoys teasing her under a fake identity, he doesn’t hesitate to reach out to her and offer support when something goes wrong at her shop.

Surprisingly, Aurora and Jack hit things off rather quickly and they get to talking and video chatting just about every day. It’s especially hard for her to open up to him given her dark past, and she also takes note that he might have a dark past that he’s not mentioned. But as they get closer, Rory starts to save up the money to fly out and visit him as a two week trial to see if there’s any real spark.

Overall, I thought this was a good read. For me nothing seemed too especially dark, but I might just have a tolerance to it. There was a bit too much back and forth with FMC and MC that happened too close together and it annoyed me a little bit, but other than that the plot worked very well. I loved how the FMC isn’t the typical woman you normally see in dark romance novels.

I loved Aurora and Jacks story! There is so much that goes on in both of their lives before they meet, they have both dealt with so much. When they finally come together there are still so many obstacles that I felt like they wouldn’t get to a happily ever after that they both truly deserve.

I loved Rory’s character, she was relatable in so many ways. She is a curvy woman who has her own insecurities. She is also mostly deaf and I really liked that there was representation of that in a book. Not everyone is the same. She is caring, and selfless, and I wanted her to finally be happy with herself and her life. The author kept me invested in the story.

Jack has been through a lot of trauma in his life, from his family and from his ex. I’m surprised he even had the energy to try, but he loves his daughter and works hard to make things right.

Highly recommend this amazing story!

ARC Review

I was blown away by this novel! It was so much more than I expected it to be and it will forever have a place on my bookshelf!

I was gripped from the first sentence and couldn't put it down! I consumed it in less than 12 hours and has fast become one of my top 5 reads of the year.

I love Rory (Aurora), she, for me is the most relatable FMC I have ever read. And her relationship with Jack is so raw and

Jack has quickly made his way into the list of ultimate book boyfriends!

“Me telling you that you are beautiful,
Was not me being nice.
I was stating a fact.
And here’s another one for you.
I haven’t been able to stop staring at your mouth since the second I saw you on the sidewalk.
All I can think about is feeling them."

*Swoons*

I find it so refreshing to read a novel where people haven't got their shit together, they arnt loaded and where everything doesn't just fall into their laps. Characters who had to work for everything the have!

There is so much more I want to say, but I will leave you to experience it all for yourself!

I am blown away by how much I loved this story.

I love how every character was integral to the story. No character was short changed or there as filler. These characters had deeply emotional journeys that riveted me to the page. I teared up multiple times with the full spectrum of emotions from heartache to joy. I found the characters down to earth and deeply affecting in their relatability.

Both main characters are single parents and I love that the children are not just plot points in the story they are so real and important to the story.

The spice is also fantastic. Rory and Jack have this intense connection and it definitely translated to the bedroom. I don't know how, but the author really captured the deepness of their connection while still making it hot as hell and not at all corny.

I can't wait to get a physical copy for my shelf. I would love to return to these characters one day soon.

I loved this book so much!

Rory has been thru so much and comes so far. It made me so sad to see what she went thru but love how far she comes.

I know she had to depend on her family to get ahead again. And I commend her brother for stepping up and helping with Quinn.

I loved the first interactions between Jack and Rory and how she thought she was interacting with some teenager in the online plant group. And come to find out it’s a fit older man. And damn. I knew from the beginning I was going to love Jack.

He’s a blue collar man who works hard and is barely getting by with a teenage daughter Nikki.
As the story goes on you learn that he’s on probation for shit that unfortunately wasn’t really his doing. And he has a god awful ex wife, who is a drug addict.

I love how Jack instantly falls for her flaws and all. And I love she just fumbles when she sees him for the first time. I hate that she felt like she wasn’t good enough because he was so attractive and she felt like she isn’t.

I feel like Rory and Jack were both handed just shit situations. And they both need to find their own happiness.
And it killed me when the fighting and stuff was just a bunch of miscommunication. And unfortunately just seeing things at the wrong time. I hate how is ex was trying to intentionally ruin things between them.
I love how Rory instantly took Nikki in and wanted to be close and wanted to take her places and spend quality time with her. It made my heart so happy to see.

I loathe jacks family except his mom. His brother and dad are just pieces of shit. I can’t believe he assaulted Rory but we love a man who stands up for his girl. And he beats his brother for what happens.

The incident when Rory confront the guys for being asshole and trying to play a prank if Nikki.

The break up killed me because I just love them together and I didn’t expect the time jump it was to long but I love that Rory finally stood up for her self and did what she want to do.

The fact that Rory returned for the graduation just made my heart happy. I love how close she got Nikki and she didn’t want to break her promise. I hate that Jack was just trying to help his ex wife I understand his intentions but damn I just hated her so much.

My heart hurt so bad when we learned about his mom. And the promise he made as child

Of course I loved that Jack was thriving by then and doing better for his family.

I loved with Jack meet Quinn. My ovaries were not ok after that. Quinn fell so fast for him too.

I loved the tension while she was there for graduation and before they got back together. Jack accepting that job was with everyone’s intentions at heart. He wanted his family, mom daughter Rory and Quinn safe and cared for and this was the opportunity for that. I didn’t care for Quinn getting mad but I do understand why. But Jack means well and he would do anything for the girls in his life.

I love the epilogue and how they ended up. I love that Jack and his girls are well taken care of and happy and out of the toxicity of that damn town.

Proud of his mom for finally divorcing that god awful man.
Proud of Jack for never quitting.
Proud of Rory for finally seeing what she and Quinn deserved.

And the spice was 👌🏻🥵. It was so good. That truck will live rent free in my head forever.

This was my favorite read of the month! DJ killed it. 🙌🏼

Tears streaming down my face while reading this romance was not on my bingo card today, but here we are!!I didn't even realize how this story would effect me. Heart-rending to the point of tearing up like crazy, I'm so in love with Jack Kettler and his unfortunate life. If Arora "Rory" wasn't coming back, I was jumping his bones. Hugging him close, real hard, not letting go.
He's got the worst luck but the best heart. He takes fall for his dumbass, criminal brother and his life just decimates in front of his eyes. His dope-addicted ex dumps his beautiful child, Nikki on his doorstep, and the scrutiny piles on.
Abusive father, callous brothers, a throughly abused mom and he stands midst of the wreckage of his life, helpless and tongue tied.
Miles away a girl's heart connects with him. Their mutual love of plants has them conversing daily online.
It's a weird thing, you can feel so close to a person tens, hundreds, thousands of miles away while people at arms length don't give a damn.
She crosses the country with a 4 years old Quinn in tow, pulling at the invisible thread connecting them
The ensuing story is so beautiful, it will Pierce your heart instantly. I've become a HUGE FAN of this authors writing. With every story she highlights a particular disability or handicap her heroines struggle with.
Rory is deaf in one ear, partially deaf in other. Has abused scars as leftovers from her ex. Nikki struggles with curvy body and red hair to the point of being bullied and physically abused in school. Inferiority complex has her shrinking like a violet. Unconditional love from Rory makes it blossom open like a dainty rose.
I'm rambling because I'm completely besotted with this story. I highly urge you to read this instantly. Push it up your tbr and bask in bus load of love.
Paige Reisenfeld & PJ Freebourn have brought out the essence of the story with their soulful narration

DJ Krimmer books have me captivated from page 1 to the very last work, EVERYTIME!

This book is the story of Aurora and Jack, 2 incredibly flawed and scared individuals. They longed for a connection that they found in each other over a plant chat group. They lived far away from each other, both single parents, struggling with life in their own ways.
Rory to a MASSIVE risk and let herself be EXTREMELY vulnerable when she decided to come and meet him in person for the first time. Their connection was instant and deep. But this is not were their stoey ends, its only just beginning as they start to navigate their way through their own trauma and vulnerabilities, as I said they are both very flawed characters and this is very evident in the way they handle many situations. Beyond navigating their own budding relationship, Rory starts to form a bond with Jacks daughter, Nikki, this was a beautiful and honest connection. Throw in Jacks kind mother, disgusting father and his repulsive 2 brothers and junkie ex-wife, and we have a complex story to get through.
Jack was an interesting man, I liked him alot, he was a man who has had a hard life, currently doing it very tough and trying to keep himself and his daughter afloat. He was barely making ends meet. I liked who he was, he was interesting, he made many mistakes, it was clear he had issues with things like rejection, with being vulnerable, accepting help, his family and the violence and broken relationships there, but he only ever wanted and tried his best, sometimes that is all we have to offer.
I was so mad at some of the ways they handled situations, I dont want to spoil anything, there were some attempted assults on Aurora by Jacks brothers, these should have gone straight to the police or a lawyer because WTF. I know there might be the opinion is some places that the cops wont help, or whatever but these situations felt like zero justice was served to them, sometimes the reality of life though is that not every dark and horrible situation alcan be tied up in a neat little bow so I can accept how things played out in that reguard.
We still have a beautiful and well-earned HEA.
I have absolutely loved each and every book I've read from this author (which is all of them) her stories are intriguing, and she has great disability representation, real believable situations, and characters with depth

What an Amazing story.!
D.J Krimmer is a new author to me,and I was really impressed with this book and the not so perfect characters D.J created.I have to say I was intrigued and riveted by the storyline from the start.
Jack and Aurora(Rory) meet by exchanging messages in an online chatroom/forum about exotic and rare plants.
They begin a friendship, and soon messages turn into video chats and phone calls, there is an instant attraction between them and Rory decides to go to make the trip to go and see him.
Rory is a single Mum.
Jack is a single dad.
They both have chaotic home lives and their families are both toxic.
Rory is partially deaf and has been in an abusive relationship, she is now stuck living with her controlling brother.
Jack is much older than Rory and has a teenage daughter and a family who is not supportive of him..he has a big secret that he hasn't told Rory, this could change the way she views him.
Honestly Jack's father and brothers are real pieces of work, they made me so mad at times and caused all sorts of problems for Jack and Rory.
This story kept throwing me curve balls and it was such a rollercoaster because these characters have alot to deal with, and just when you think they were going to be alright something else happens to put their relationship on rocky ground.
I really enjoyed reading Jack and Rory's story it wasn't perfect and they had to overcome so many obstacles and insecurities.
They had to fight for what they wanted and delve within themselves to get through their own self doubt,so they could make the love they found work between them.
D.J Krimmer's writing was so compelling and Closing The Distance was Romantic, steamy, and suspenseful, that brought out all kinds of emotions from me.
I Loved it.

There are a number of tropes in this book, but to reduce it to the tropes diminishes how great a story this is. This is an age-gap, single mom/single dad romance about two people who have been hurt by those who are supposed to love them (her former fiancé and his father and brothers (not to mention his slimy ex-wife)). Aurora is a plant loving mother from California and she meets Jack, a tough tatted father from Kentucky on an internet message board dedicated to people who love plants. They grow closer over time, talking via text and over the phone. Eventually, Aurora comes to visit Jack at his home. They get even closer, but then another misunderstanding breaks them apart. Aurora keeps talking to Jack's daughter and comes back for a brief visit. Will they be able to get past their drama and misunderstanding and admit their love for each other?

I loved Jack. He was so open and vulnerable a lot while pretending not to be so that he could be strong for Aurora. He treated her with such gentleness and really wanted to go slowly so she would feel safe. I liked Aurora too, I just felt she was a little naive in some of her ideas, but then again, the one time she tried had turned out really badly. I loved them together though, they treated each other so sweetly and she just fit into his family with him and Nikki.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

The story of Rory & Jack is heartbreaking, sad but also beautiful and raw!

They meet on a exotic plants forum and after single mum Rory realises Jack is not a 17 year old girl but a man in his 40s, their relationship blossoms into messaging and face time calls, and Rory takes the leap to fly accross country to meet!

There are so many things I want to say but I hate spoilers in my reviews!
I will say the story is not a cut and dry HEA and my heart bled for both of them more times than should be possible in 250 page book!

It's so beautifully written, the struggles the couple go through honestly have you crying like a baby. They are your average people, no billionaires or sweep you off your feet mega bucks heros. This book is based around two salt of the earth characters who have everyday money, domestic and work struggles just like the rest of us!

The book handles issues of, sexual assault, drug addiction, alcohol addiction and abuse, highlighting how easy it can be to get stuck on toxic cycles and situations.
The book also has a plus size, hearing impaired FMC. I really like the representation throughout all the authors books when it comes to normal bodies and representing dlisabilities.

Jack's daughter was my favour character in the whole book and even though its a standalone I would love to see her again 👀

I was lucky to ARC for this author. This was the first book I've read by this author and I'm glad I got this chance. This was a cute story about a single mom who was badly abused by her ex and befriends a single dad who lives almost on the other side of the country. The tense jumped from past to present a few times as I read with minor mistakes throughout but that didn't detract from the storyline. The FMC did annoy me a couple of times toward the end, but I guess it helps with the angst and all that. I loved that she almost immediately developed a good relationship with the MMC's daughter. The male side of his family is complete trash and I wished they had gotten a worse ending. The epilogue was the cherry on top of a cute ending. I would recommend those with DV and SA triggers to either not read or proceed with caution as this is mentioned and seen throughout the book. I really liked this story and am going to be checking out more books written by this author.

Ms. Kimmer, I am wondering how in the world this is only your first novel. Before reading please look at the content warning.

Ms. Kimmer took two very opposite people, Jack and Aurora, and spun them into a wonderful story. This story felt real especially with the world that is happening around us right now. Ms. Kimmer didnt make Jack out to be this billionaire that rides a white horse no she painted him as a blue-collared worker who is trying to survive another day. She didnt cut Aurora any breaks either. Aurora was beautiful, unique, and thoughtful she melted my heart. These two struggled not just as individuals but even as a couple. There were some moments when I hated Jack. There were moments I wanted to shake Aurora. In the end, they get their happy ending. Im still trying to comprehend how this is Ms. Kimmers first novel.

What a good read. This book had me all up in my feelings haha. I already knew I was a fan of age gaps but I’m quickly becoming a fan of small town angsty romances. The up and down & back n forth kept me turning the page. You just couldn’t help rooting for this little circle from the beginning. The spice was good & sweet but it’s the journey of these 2 that will hook you. I will definitely never look at a parked truck the same way🥵The drama had me talking to me kindle. This is a definite recommend for me. Always check and make sure your going to be comfortable with what your reading , beside the spicy bits there is some heavy subjects touched on. Domestic abuse, bullying, drug/alcohol use. Hope you enjoy this read as much as I did, Happy Reading Book Besties💙

Jack and Rory's captured me from the 2nd chapter. At first, I wasn't sure what to expect or if the story was for me, but I ended up really enjoying it. It was a quick read for me as I was able and wanted to finish it in 24 hours.

There were many great tropes in this story including age gap, kind of enemies to lovers, second chances and much more. There were many hard topics brought up within the novel, but were tastefully handled and worked through. Please read the trigger warnings.

Both Rory and Jack's problems and lives are potentially very relatable and realistic for many of its readers. I loved seeing the couple work through differences, holding each other accountable, and lifting each other up. I will definitely recommend this book!

Overall, I really enjoyed the story. The main characters were pretty likeable. The only “complaint” I have that makes this not a five star read for me is every time the couple were starting to get spicy, the MMC would refer to her “soft belly” or “mom belly” and while I get the author was trying to be inclusive and emphasize that not everybody is a stick (like most novels) I just feel like it was gone about the wrong way. Similarly, with the teenage daughter consistently being bullied for her weight, like, I get what she’s trying to do here, but I just think it could have been approached a little better.

Overall, really liked the book and I do recommend, just be wary of the weight comments if that’s something that bothers you.

From the first to the last word this author managed to keep me captivated in exploring Jack and Aurora’s “Always and Forever” story. DJ Krimmer managed to bring forth subjects that we either have first-hand experience off or we know someone who had or still is going through an experience.
I love how the author focused on healing, forgiving and the beautiful love blossoming. I would recommend everyone to read this book and to keep an eye on this upcoming author. She is a star that will shine forth with brilliance and I cannot wait for her next book. D.J. Krimmer

I thought that this was a sinfully intriguing read. A complex and smartly crafted combination of rich angst, taut drama, raw emotion, stunning twists, intense feels, tender heart and steamy heat create a lush and potent story that quickly lures you in and leaves you consumed by both Aurora, Jack, the powerful story and their deeply moving romance. it is sweet and hot, inspires plenty of feels and emotions in the reader and raises your temperature while melting your heart and causing your protective instincts to go into overdrive. In short, I thought it was incredible. This is my freely posted, frank review.

*I received an arc ebook in exchange for an honest review.

Aurora has really been thru some serious problems in her young life, but she has never let things take her down. Jack hasn’t had it any easier. They are two survivors who just so happen to meet online. And just as the past has proven, they don’t let anything stop them from making the best of their lives together either.

This book was a very easy paced book to read. I read this in one day. The characters were a joy to get to know and Ms. Krimmer did an amazing job at making them come to life in this book. I would definitely recommend this. It was a very heartwarming story.

3.5 is the rough star I’d give this.

Aurora - Rory- has a bleak past of bad relationships and rocky family history.

Jack has a darker past linked to despair and heartbreak. His family history is strained and dotted with unease.

Of all ways , plants is what bring these two together in a cute intimate way.

I have to say, the 3.5 would have be higher if I didn’t find the main characters less than thrilling at times. Having the back and forth aspect has never intrigued me with plotlines. Especially when a 42 and 28 year old couple are bickering like teens in a relationship. But that’s just my opinion. Otherwise I enjoyed the book.

I am so in love with Rory and Jack!! This book has a little bit of everything. We’ve got two single-parents with an age-gap that start in a long-distance relationship. One is a beautiful curvy FMC with a disability and the other is a hot, tattooed MMC who collectively struggle with past trauma, addiction and abuse. Their relationship is so realistic in that even when they come together they still face so many real world problems to include issues with exes, family drama and a problem with communication. It was so easy to root for this couple and I definitely recommend this book!!

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

Where to begin? I finished this fantastic book last night. Let's get into it.
The FMC totally relatable. Shes a strong willed woman with her own battles that are again, day to day things that real women face in the world. That alone makes me love DJ's work. I enjoyed her personality and growth. ( I loved towards the end when she does what is right for her)
The MMC- well that dude was delicious- absolutely spectacular. His loyalty to his daughter and mother is commendable. He is a 10/10
Plot- fucking perfect.
OW- Well I wanted to punch her in the face lol. but shes not real, so there's that.
I recommend this book 10/10

Let just say this is an epic love story that came together so beautifully. I love Jack and Aurora' story and have never read a book where to people deserve this HEA more than them. They both have been through so much prior to meeting eachother which makes for a great start. They go through the normal trials and tribulations and some scary ones to get to there happiness. Jack's ex wife causes some issues and won't let go easily however the book has a beautiful end. This books touches a lot of sensitive subjects so check your trigger warnings prior.

"Do you have any idea how hard it is to look the way I do when I have a dad that looks like Charlie Hunnam and Jensen Ackles had a tattooed love child?"

What a great description, my favourite quote from the book. It made the hot scenes just right.

A roller-coaster ride of emotions, both characters have pasts they would rather forget, but only one comes back to haunt their new found relationship.

I couldn't put it down, it had me hooked early.

I loved the book from start to finish. I mostly loved the diversity in the characters' backgrounds - it's nice to finally see some lower/working class representation (as opposed to everyone being upper class/CEO type) as well as and the struggles this kind of life brings, the challenges within the family and overcoming all of it for the sake of love. The romance plotline is developed very well too, I was really hooked on Aurora's and Jack's story. Overall it was a great and worthy read.

I just read Closing the Distance in one sitting because I could not put it down! It had me feeling all of the emotions from laughing to crying. Rory is such a strong female character- able to both go after what she wants and walk away if she is not treated properly. Jack is my favorite kind of male character- super strong and alpha BUT the gentlest, kindest, teddybear with "his girls". I will definitely be rereading this one many times in the future!

Aurora, Rory, is a single mother from a well off family and when her daughter was born and she was escaping an abusive relationship she made a deal to stay with her brother till she got on her feet. While doing so she was posting in a group where Jack, a middle aged single father was posting comments taunting her. Till finally one day he messaged her and they ended up talking and getting to know one another. Will Jacks past Scare Rory away? Will Rory's past keep her from finding happiness?
