Terminal Faults

Rate this book
How complex our faults.
Two young couples plot and scheme their way through life, unmoved by the havoc and heartache they inflict. A mother and daughter indulge in their most gluttonous desires, indifferent to the suffering of others. A serial killer revels in the presentation of the ultimate victim and will stop at nothing to complete a macabre collection. And two disillusioned AIs are launched into a devastating feud, oblivious to their own malfunctions and succumbing to ruinous obsession.

How complex the fallout.
Now, wandering aimlessly through a mysterious realm, these nine condemned souls unknowingly interact with one another, woven together into a complex tapestry of woe. They stalk without purpose, hunt without direction, seek without vision. Heads down and locked in their own vicious cycles, their misguided momentum only serves to fuel the means of their destruction.

How complex these Obsidian Rooms.

Rating: 3 1/2. Maybe a smidge higher.

Easy to get through, which I needed after my previous read, a DNF. Owen has an active imagination, which clearly helps her as a writer. I've now read a few of hers and each one has been quite different. The Supplemental section ended up being better than I expected, as it gave me some insight into how her mind works and why she made the decisions she made in writing the book.

I was too busy enjoying the mish-mosh of characters and situations, especially Qubots -212, -1916 and Art, to notice I was reading an allegory. Even the Table of Contents reads like a memory dump (another type of fault). And in the end, the characters live on and on (and on) with the faults they could never see or understand. These are eternal blind spots, and maybe we all have them.

I loved the supplemental content at the end. That was my "Aha" moment of understanding what I'd read. It's a glimpse inside Deidre J. Owens' mind and it was fascinating. She explains her inspiration and writing, the characters and setting...even the math behind the book. Yes, math.

Intrigued? I was. It's a quick read and will take you places you never knew you wanted to see. You might want to pack a coat.
