[Content warning: bullying, pure obnoxiousness]

They aren’t quite there yet, but Toramaru might be getting her feelings across to Unoki slowly, maybe? Never mind, however, because here comes Yodo, who has a past with Unoki that’s about to seriously impact on his future.

The road to good intentions is paved with hell this volume. Let’s just get it out of the way - Yodo is one of the worst characters I’ve had the displeasure of being forced to spend time with in quite a while and she’s an absolute drag on the story whenever she shows up, which is quite a lot.

She is a bully, no matter how you frame it, basically abusing and manhandling Unoki in ways that are clearly meant to be funny, but just as clearly aren’t. And she has that unflappable smarm attribute where nothing seems to phase her, so don’t bother waiting for recognizance or comeuppance here. Unflinching and unlikable aren’t two great character traits.

Much like last volume’s surprising heft, the mangaka tries to make a swerve with this at the end, seemingly to make a point about assumptions and some people just doing things their way. Except I assumed I’d enjoy this book a lot more if somebody dropped a boat on Yodo and nothing here proves me wrong.

Which is a damn shame because everything else is so good. Despite the awful way they get there, some of the stuff with Unoki and Toramaru’s relationship slowly evolving is a real joy to watch and seeing them truly recognize what the other is saying, finally, gives them both some real heft as characters.

And some of the other stuff is really funny. Yutaka comes in to save the day at an awkward moment in our leads’ relationship and Toramaru figures out pretty much instantly that Yutaka’s got her heart set on Matsuri, which shows why she’s the boss and all (provided a cat hasn’t kicked her ass).

When Toramaru’s brother decides to invade the school himself he causes a surprising amount of chaos and mayhem and his very deep love of shojo manga makes him the perfect foil for his sister’s rampaging hormones to bounce off of.

It all sounds just perfect until you factor in Yodo and that’s the part of this that I can’t get past. The central relationship here keeps getting better and better and had it stayed in that vein and found something, anything, else to move the story forward I’d be in heaven.

2.5 stars - rounding up because of all the good parts, shame about that one character absolutely poisoning the well. This sort of relentless bullying isn’t my idea of fun and doing it for laughs? Even less so.

Enter Youdou, the bully of all bullies. Sort of a "love rival" to Toramaru but... not exactly a love rival... just a complete jerk who enjoys hurting people. She brings some much-needed change by forcing Toramaru and Unoki to define their relationship and confront their true feelings. It's unfortunate that this change is brought by a completely insufferable annoying character that makes the whole series painful to read. This series has been pretty sweet and wholesome read, with the main appeal being the tonal difference between how the characters feel and how they act- Toramaru loves Unoki, but can't communicate it without being scary! Unoki cares about Toramaru, but is so frightened he can barely speak when he's around her! That's a nice gimmick. Now we get someone who says she loves Unoki, but also is a complete asshole in every conceivable way who doesn't accidentally say she wishes harm on Unoki... she outright does hurt him, over and over. What an incredibly annoying character that ruins everything I liked about this series.

Also this volume isn't funny! Probably because I don't like Youdou's gimmick, and she covers the entirety of this volume like BO at an anime convention.

Well I didn't except that, honestly getting all the way to the last chapter in this volume was really good and that big reveal was both a little anticlimactic and really interesting, I really didn't see it coming the way it did but now I'm curious at how it continues from here, even more so with that last panel!

Yikes. The new girl is seriously horrible. It really ruins the comedic vibe, and I don’t like that she sort of gets redeemed….
