My favorite part of this book was when Captain Deadalus slices up a prison guard's face in order to extract information about where his crew was being held, and then upon finding his crew says something like "NO!! They've been tortured!"
Ok, so this wasn't exactly a FIVE star book, but it definitely was - for me - a 4+ star book. I am having problems understanding the hate of the other reviews. Yes, it is a pulp adventure and reads like one, but I enjoyed every minute of reading it. It had a good plot, a likeable protagonist, action, romance....not sure what more someone would be looking for from a pulp (rebellious James Bond-type character) novel. I am actively seeking out and looking forward to books 2 and 3 in the series.
I wasn't expecting to determine my "Worst Book Read" award for 2014 in January, but wow is this bad. Terrible dialogue, horrible worldbuilding, a Mary Sue protagonist of the worst sort, and throughout the entire thing you get the feeling that it was written for some middle school class assignment.
