At least that's what Dakota believed when her drunk ex-boyfriend showed up at her house in the middle of the night. After years of being apart, Dakota wanted to believe everything he said about missing her. In a way, she missed him too.
After drinking with his co-workers to celebrate his promotion, Lincoln ended up at Dakota's house. He intended to share his success with her, but instead, he poured out his heart.
When he woke, he had to explain to Dakota that coming to her house was a mistake. Then he had to explain to his girlfriend why he was missing the night before.

I love getting to know this couple and understanding their issues….I hated that they thought they needed time apart again…but, they pulled themselves together and made it work.
I really tried to enjoy this book. I was excited about the whole idea of the ex showing up drunk and confessing his feelings. But honestly I could not move past the idea of her mother keeping her from her father for 30 years. I hated the way that what her mother did was almost brushed off. I understand that she can’t hate her mother. However it’s not as if her mother was being abused by her family. And even if she was after 30 years never once did she think that she should tell her daughter who her father was?! But no, she ruined the lives of two people because it “became easy for her” not because of her daughter she claims to love so much but because of herself. She was/is a selfish individual and never considered her daughter’s feelings. Not only that but, to alienate her daughter from an entire side of her black family and have her constantly interact with white people who she didn’t feel comfortable with just didn’t work for me. That storyline just ruined the book for me. I don’t think that the author did well to write a storyline like this. She attempted to redeem her mothers character. But it simply didn’t work because her mother kept her daughter from her father because of her parents and then we find out later in the book that Dakota doesn’t even interact with her mother’s parents. So it’s almost as if everything was for nothing. this angered me because it is something that I’ve noticed that a lot of black authors do (especially this one). Where they have this idea in their minds that no matter what your parents/family do to you, you should forgive them and open your arms to them. This is not true. I’m so tired of us as black individuals feeling as if we owe loyalty to those that never considered our feelings. This is not something to celebrate. It is okay to forgive however it is not okay to neglect the amount of pain that was caused by a certain individual.
Mrs. Nichole, I love to read these types of storylines with a romance like Lincoln and Dakota built. They started their foundation during the molding years of young adulthood. They both needed time apart to heal and realize where the unconditional love lived. I know it was an accidental coincidence how they found their way back to each other however it worked. I was glad because Lincoln and Dakota were meant for each other. I wasn't a fan of Jace. I felt like all of the signs were there 👈🏽 pointing and telling her that Lincoln is "just not that into you." And when she did her whole personality change from laid back to over-dramatic it showed her true colors. I honestly didn't see Lincoln settling down with Jace. It was always Dakota no matter how long it took for them to figure it out.
My heart did break 💔 for Mariel and Keith. Mariel recounting her and Keith's past explained who her heart belongs to. Although, Mariel was able to move on from her past and create the family she always wanted. Keith was and still is the love of her life. Dakota and Eve were more than sisters they were besties. Benson was there for Dakota like any father would be. It was still a win-win situation. Before it was all said and done Dakota gained more family whom she instantly clicked with. Her family was one of Dakota's love languages.
This is a fantastic read with just enough drama to keep your attention. It demonstrates how it sometimes takes two times before you get it right. And once you mature to the point you know you need healing, closure, and forgiveness of others life flows much better. Dakota had her quirks but ultimately she pushed Lincoln into greater. And in return, he helped her heal in so many ways. Grab your copy today you will enjoy this second-chance romance.
From the cover, title, and synopsis I decided to give this NTMA a shot. As the story opened I had high expectations because it drew me into the storyline immediately. The story then fell apart for me. While I understand that this was a second chance romance it fell flat for me. I can understand Dakota's reluctance to get back with Lincoln especially with him having a girlfriend in the midst. I didn't understand how after a year that Lincoln could walk away from Jace who he said he loved to reconnect with Dakota. Those ties were not wrapped up nicely. Inserting the dynamics of Dakota's biological father pursuit made the pairing of Lincoln and Dakota more difficult and I couldn't comprehend as to the reason. There were a lot thrown in but those matters didn't flow easily and made for a "chunky" story. While the HEA happened, I felt that some of the issues were glossed over. I will consider another read from this author as I don't want to end it here. So much potential in the story...didn't meet my expectations.
You all, this couple had me on edge most of this story. Lincoln loved Dakota to pieces, and their love was requited. What had me going was the roller coaster ride they took me on in this novel. Dakota wanted to know her biological father; I get that. I also understood her qualms about returning her heart to Lincoln because he broke her heart initially. I just wanted them to skip all the procrastination and return to loving one another. But honestly, I appreciated how the story mirrored real life and did not have a cookie-cutter theme parsed into a predictable theme. I received my happy for now ending and reveled in the realness of this story.
I loved this story and how it showed the journey Lincoln and Dakota went through to get back to one another. The book highlighted their growth individually and how they learned from previous mistakes. Sometimes a drunk mind speaks sober thoughts and Lincoln’s drunkenness lead him back to Dakota. She was resistant but he was able to wear her down and showed her just how much love he still had for her. I can’t wait to see what the next book from this author brings.
Great read. That say a drunk minds speaks sober thoughts such was the case for Lincoln. He needed a little liquid courage to follow his heart. Just loved the growth of both he and Dakota. Especially recognizing the timing is everything. J. Nichole definitely has a gift for telling a good black love story.
Lincoln knew he loved and wanted Dakota, and she wanted him too. Both were scared to be hurt again and yo me they wasted a lot of time being seperated unnecessarily! I enjoyed reading the novel! They finally got their HEA! Dakota finally met her dad Keith also!
One phone call that set off a chain of events. The story was told so detailed that it appeared in slow motion.
Past events had come to play and life kept happening. It took a while but in the end, it worked itself out. Sometimes the past has to be reconciled to move forth with re future.
Whew, this was as expected…. Awesome. Dakota had me in edge and hard to get close to but redemption was all that. As always great reading from a great author.
This was great book, I was a little worried when Dakota needed time to come to grips with her life but it all worked out in the end would love to to see what happens with the wedding.
It was a good read. I hate that there was breaks in between their relationship, but we know how life can throw a curve ball in situations. I glad they find their way back to each other it makes me think the song by Jaheim.
This was a different take on second chance romance with a lot of good lessons. That damn Dakota got on my nerves though. I will need a second book with Bianca because I'm team Avery.
Dakota & Lincoln were meant to be! Jace thought she had something but she should have known that she never really has him. A drunk tongue speaks sober thoughts! Fate always wins
Dakota and Lincoln made me want to take a drink. The back and forth drove me crazy. By the end their love for each other was endearing. A well written good read.
