The Adventures of Tom Sawyer by Mark Twain is a novel about a young boy growing up in the fictional small town of Hannibal, Missouri along the Mississippi River during the 1840s. Tom Sawyer lives with his Aunt Polly and his half-brother Sid. Life for Tom is a series of grand adventures that include his best friend "Huck" Finn, the love of his life Becky Thatcher, buried treasures, scoundrels, thieves and body snatchers. Manga Classics brings a brilliant new light to Mark Twain's very first novel that new readers will embrace and life-long fans will enjoy.
I have loved Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn ever since I was in single digits and read the Great Illustrated Classics abridged versions of their books. I later read the actual books by Twain, repeatedly, and very much enjoyed them, especially The Adventures of Tom Sawyer. So I was fully prepared to relish this Manga Classics edition... and I did! It was just the right blend of childhood fun and mischief, adventure, and frolicsome fun. I can't wait to read their version of Huck's story.
This was a perfect summertime read! Also, it's really cool how the cover for this one and for The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn fit together to make one whole map and picture. You'll see what I mean if you search online for their covers.
Thanks for manga editions of these classical literature! This edition definitely alliviated how difficult reading the classics can be.
What I loved about this is the author's and illustrator's notes at the back because they shared their processes and their thoughtful interpretation of the book.
As for the story... it was alright. This was a good look of how life was like at that time. And Oh man! The freedom and carefree-ness of children was amazing to see. And it also depicts how adults can be interesting.
