Claudia Vampire Knight: Hellgate

Rate this book
From the same Hellverse as the best-selling fantasy horror series Requiem Vampire Knight, Claudia Vampire Knight takes you deeper into the world of Resurrection.
When her blood sacrifice on Earth goes wrong, gatekeeper Claudia is taken instead through the Hellgate, to be reborn in the cruel and chaotic world of Resurrection.
Submitted to violent transformations and training in the Dark Arts, she becomes Lady Claudia Demona: Vampire Knight. On one condition: she must do what no one has ever done: escape Hell and return to Earth within six months to sacrifice her innocent daughter on her 21st birthday – or suffer an eternity being torn limb from limb.
But first, she must satisfy her lust for blood, and then shop for a luxury coffin in Vampire department store Herods.
Along the way, Claudia fights 1950s suburban Zombies, seduces one of Dracula’s sons and hunts the Vampire Killer known as the Black Pilgrim. But her biggest threat is The Bitch Pumpers: a psychotic gang of serial killers who want to get to know Claudia intimately, inside and out…

Claudia Vampire Knight: Hellgate is an intriguing blend of gothic horror, dark fantasy, and political allegory, driven by Pat Mills’ typically sharp instincts and Franck Tacito’s striking, moody artwork. The idea of Claudia as a vampire knight navigating a brutal, morally compromised world is compelling, and the setting has real atmosphere—oppressive, violent, and deliberately uncomfortable.
That said, the book doesn’t always live up to the strength of its premise. The narrative can feel rushed and episodic, with big ideas introduced but not always fully explored. Character development, especially beyond Claudia herself, is often sacrificed in favor of shock, symbolism, or ideological statements. While this will appeal to readers who enjoy Mills’ uncompromising, confrontational style, others may find it heavy-handed or emotionally distant.
Tacito’s art is a major highlight: expressive, raw, and perfectly suited to the grim tone, even if at times the visual density makes the action hard to follow. Overall, Hellgate is ambitious and visually memorable, but uneven in pacing and depth.
Worth reading for fans of dark graphic fiction and Pat Mills completists, but it may not fully satisfy readers looking for a more cohesive or character-driven story.
