So sickeningly sweet that one may get a toothache just from reading it. The story is repetitive, the jokes are hit or miss and really it comes down to "awwww isn't that sweet?" at the end of each chapter. The artwork is nice but for the most part the comic is a failure.
THAT SAID (and yes I put that all in caps because I imagined myself going off on it and then felt bad), I actually see potential here. Now, you may be wondering how that could be, and indeed if I would have heard myself say that at even the halfway point of the manga I would have asked the same thing, but there actually is hope. Most of the chapters in this book are around 4 pages long. This adds to the repetitive nature as it followed the same damn formula and it happened so many times. As we go along though, chapters start increasing in length and start having a bit more in terms of continuity. I actually enjoyed the last chapter and was interested in the character dynamics (honestly I liked that throughout the entire thing despite the repetitive nature). While I do not think this will likely ever be a great series, the progression towards an actual plot and longer stories means that it may actually evolve into something enjoyable. While this was nothing special at all, I'll likely give the second volume a shot as I was given them both at the same time and if it does continue evolving the series could actually be at least a fun overly sweet read rather than just a sickeningly sweet one. For now, 2/5 stars

No sabía qué esperar de este manga, pero me pareció súper divertido. No tiene una historia completa y secuencial, sino que son como varios episodios medio aleatorios de una pareja de novios. La chica, Shikimori, es muy pro y badass, mientras que el chico es muy torpe y siempre le pasan cosas absurdas, así que ella siempre tiene que salvarlo.

Shikimori isn’t just another pretty face (I’m paraphrasing). No, she’s as cool as they come, which is helpful when you’re dating a cursed accident magnet like Izumi. He frequently needs looking after, often in the most dramatic ways imaginable. Now repeat that unto infinity.
I am starting this review with 60 pages or so left to read because I am daring this book to do something different by the end. If you ever read something and said ‘yes, more of this please’, welcome to the ironic torment of hell version of that statement.
I’ve never read any comic this repetitious before. With few exceptions, this is always the same story - Izumi and Shikimori are cute together (and I do really like their relationship, which makes this even sadder), something happens to Izumi, then Shikimori’s colder side comes out with a differently drawn shot of her face. This literally happens EVERY time.
You could eat twenty bowls of Oat Bran and you wouldn’t be as regular as the plotting of this manga.
I’m back. Turns out I was closer to the end than I thought - the end of this already flimsy book is filled with ads. It had one final story where things got a little more serialized, but quite possibly too little, too late.
I genuinely feel bad. The art is fine and the two leads have an interesting dynamic since Shikimori is the stronger of the two and Izumi needs protecting. And yet the thought of another volume of this makes me wince.
2.5 stars, I think, but I couldn’t imagine giving this 3. It’s the weirdest position - I didn’t dislike this book but I don’t think I would recommend it to anybody. Reiterating the same gag can work - look at Way of the Househusband - but the way this is written just makes it a chore to get through.
Update - I don’t normally update my reviews, and my thoughts on this volume have not actually changed, but I would be remiss if I didn’t say that this gets infinitely better after the first volume, to the point where this is one of my favourite series now. So, it does warrant a second look if you like it at all.

How should I rate this? The art is really cute but I found it hard to get into the story. The series revolves around the cutie Shikimori who saves her boyfriend Izumi from looming danger(s), and that's mostly it. This is shorter than most manga series that I read and yet, it took me days to finish this. Every scene just took longer for me to absorb that it bored me (honestly) I guess, I'll give the other volumes a try again sometime when I have enough patience to continue.

I very much wanted to like this book. It looked like a very sweet little high school romance...and as it turns out, that's not only what it is, it's too much of what it is. Basically it's the equivalent of candy corn: cute and sweet, but too much will make you feel sick and it all sort of turns to a same-tasting sludge in your stomach. Without the garbled metaphors, that means that it's too sweet and each chapter is too similar to really work as a full volume. Taken chapter-by-chapter on a weekly basis, I suspect it works much better.
There are good moments here. I love that it essentially swaps Shikimori's and Izumi's gender roles, making her the protector and him the protected without any other commentary. They both like each other for their personalities, so who does what is the icing on the cake for them. It's not Making a Point, it's just who they are, and that doesn't happen enough. This may get more interesting in later volumes (the last chapter does imply that it could), but only those looking for total sweetness and little plot are likely to enjoy this right now. But it's 2020 - there are worse things!

2.5 stars if I'm generous
I made it 48 pages (so around chapter 8, I think) before I couldn't take this anymore. It is the most repetitive thing I've ever experienced. Groundhog Day has less repetition than this story. Every chapter includes the guy saying or thinking about his girlfriend "She's so cute" or some variation. It feels copy-pasted from each chapter to the next. The chapters are strung out and it feels like there's no plot. Which would make you think this is a character-focused story, right?
Wrong.
I can't tell you anything about these people other than the guy has bad luck and dark hair and the girl has like superpowers and sometimes a menacing face and also looks cute every time she does stuff.

Don't bother unless you're really bored.

Reread December 28th: Still such a cute read!
This was a really cute read!
Though in the beginning, I honestly didn’t know what my thoughts would be on it. But as I continued reading, I was totally caught off guard by the extremely small chapters. I mean, the first chapter alone was four pages and was shocked by that!
But once I got into a “rhythm” when reading (and ignoring how many times Izunami says “My girlfriend is a real cutie.”), I enjoyed it quite a bit. They are an ADORABLE couple and I found the mix of a boy with insanely bad luck and a cute girl who can turn “the coolest” in a heartbeat was fun!
Despite that the chapters are short and more episodic like (though I found I enjoyed that because it made it a fast read), there is a continuous story and I loved seeing their romance bloom as the story progresses. My favorite chapter was number fifteen because seeing Shikimori drop her guard was so stinking cute! Also, the family scene was really touching.
I might have been uncertain how I would feel about this story in the beginning, but I am already looking forward to book two! It’s a fun story that in my opinion flips some of the “tropes” in manga I’ve read and definitely want to see what happens next!

Ahh~ that was worth sinking time into~ :D
To preface, Japanese culture still upholds gendered stereotyping for the most part, and this shows up predominantly in shoujo manga. Girls aspire to be cute, boys aspire to be cool. Boys tend to be protective of the girls, and they tend to be the more dominant of the pair (e.g., they tend to be portrayed as being more strong and assertive, and can be demonstrated in the form of performing kabe-don, protecting their girl from being splashed on, and so on). Girls tend to be portrayed as being better at cooking (particularly cooking with love for their romantic partner), are more prone to tears, and win others over by the sweetness of their actions, demeanour and general being.
This manga took those tropes and gender-swapped them. So the girl (the titular Shikimori) is the more dominant one, who swoops in to safe her accident-prone boyfriend, Izumi.
The mangaka did a great job with exploring both Shikimori and Izumi's inherent kindness towards others, and the vignettes every chapter effectively captures the dynamics between these two young sweethearts, as well as the relationship that they form with the people around them.
I personally liked how progressive this series has been thus far: depicting women as being athletic, competitive, and very super cool (typically male stereotypes in manga), and depicting men as being capable of feeling the full range of their emotions (particularly tears, but also being genuinely kind and loving) and being klutzy (coz girls aren't the only ones who can be!). I'm going to be following these series with interest to the end. :)

My partner keeps giving me manga to read, and most of the time I like them, but our tastes are different, and I don't often fall in love. This is another one that hits my "okay" buttons. There's a bit of a role reversal in that the girlfriend is competent and proactive, and the boyfriend is ineffectual and accident-prone, but other than that there isn't a lot to it. The art's pretty good, and it's cute, and it's pleasant to read. It could stand to have either a bit more humor, or a bit more drama, I think.

There’s nothing really exceptionally special about this manga, even for a comedy. Series like Komi Can’t Communicate succeed because of their characters, but Shikimori’s Not Just a Cutie just has its two leads to rely upon — and they’re just not charismatic enough to carry the series, at least in my opinion.

How about a manga about nothing?
No, this is not a manga based on the Seinfeld show but I still got that feeling whenever I read chapter after chapter showing the lives of often cute but occasionally cool and focused Shikimori along with the poster child of Murphey's Law who happens to be her boyfriend, Izumi. It is hard to explain but I guess being able to read any of the chapters in any order and still having the same experience instead of some linear story like a growing relationship is not as alluring as the constant events of Izumi who is either affected by misfortune and Skikimori makes things better (while he compliments how amazing she is) or he avoids trouble because super star Shikimori jumps to action to save him from said disaster. That said the end of the manga we get a cliffhanger that might lead to some sort of actual story instead of the hodgepodge of disaster averting events up to now but for me I like this book just enough to hopefully watch the anime to see how things turn out in the end instead of collecting all of the volumes already out. :)

Ahhhh so adorable I’m obsessed!! Love the dynamic of both Shikimori and Izumi, equal parts funny and cute! I smiled so much and binged it, pure happiness!! Definitely recommend and will be continuing!!

5★, easily!! This was adorable, sweet, and funny, with amazing art (and that cover..! 🔥🔥🔥)
Thoughts:
* Refreshing reversal of the cool guy and shy girl pairing. I absolutely loved how Shikimori kept saving Izumi without a second thought, and always so smoothly! She's brave, athletic, suave...and still definitely very cute. Izumi on the other hand was too adorable, with his uber-clumsiness and constant swooning over Shikimori's coolness.
* Sweet. Super sweet. Saccharine sweet that will give you toothaches. But I love it!! It may not be everyone's cup of tea, but I've come to realize that I really enjoy these sweet, adorable love stories if they're done well.
* I've seen this series at the bookstore before but never committed because of the lukewarm reviews for it on goodreads, mostly about the chapters being repetitive. I wish I had just followed my gut and gotten it sooner!! The core trope may have been repeated, but it's a slice of life manga. There's not really crazy events happening. That's literally the whole point. Instead of a focus on some big overarching plot, it's all about the day-to-day life of a high-school couple, with the fun twist trope that flips 'normal' gender roles on their head. Again, it may not be for everyone, but I thoroughly enjoyed this.
* The chapters had some really great and varied settings that weren't just limited to high school, which helped keep things interesting! Movie theater (horror movie!), ski slopes for the class trip, theme park date, going to see cherry blossoms in the spring and christmas lights in the winter...each chapter was something different and fun.
* The art is breathtaking - this mangaka may be one of my new favorites. I love all the panels, which fluctuate between chibi cute and detailed action or face shots. I also especially appreciated how there was absolutely no fan service when the MCs are minors...too many manga I've read really over-sexualize the young female characters especially, with very leer-y/male gaze shots (I'm talking about you, 'My Dress Up Darling' that I DNF'd because of all the up-skirt panty shots). This one was fluffy goodness and felt a lot more respectful.
I am going on a hunt tomorrow for vol 2, since the Barnes I got this one at had all the way up to volume 6 but was missing the specific second volume...I cannot wait to binge the rest!!

Okay but seriously, this volume was so fucking sweet it damn near gave me cavities. I already adore Shikimori and Izumi as a couple and their dynamic. While this volume isn't doing anything new, I'm fine with it because I love love LOVE the main couple so much. I'm hoping we'll get some side characters introduced in future volumes since side character interactions are some of my fave things in romance manga, but I'm also perfectly content focusing on this adorable duo in the meantime. Also, I FUCKING LOVE the artwork/art style! The heavy use of lines and shadows are not common in romance manga, but it definitely worked here and I loved it! The character designs and expressions were also amazing and I LOVE Shikimori's design! So simple, yet so expressive and flexible!
A word of warning to those looking to give this series a shot: this volume (and I can imagine the whole series will be the same) is EXTREMELY REPETITIVE. And I know all manga (especially slice of life series) are inherently repetitive, but I'm warning you that the same phrases and actions are going to be repeated for each chapter. If this bothers you at all, I would suggest flipping through this online or at a bookstore before buying it. Obviously the repetition didn't bother me, but I can definitely imagine that it could be bothersome to others, so keep that in mind if you're interested in this.

Mi novia es una fiera, pero también es una lindura.
Una frase o más bien, un pensamiento que se repetía cada 3 hojas que me dieron ganas de arrancarme los ojos.
Tengo que admitir que si fue algo que me llamó la atención en un principio, pero después de la manera en la que fue ejecutada, me dieron ganas de aventar este manga por la ventana.
Algo positivo de este libro es que te voltea los papeles. Ya no es el chico que siempre salva a la chica, sino al revés. Porqué él, tiene la peor suerte del mundo. Si un avión va caer, su suerte se va asegurar que sea en su casa; sino hay ningún coche en la calle, mágicamente sale uno cuando va a cruzar; si está en un desierto, lastimosamente va a pisar arenas movedizas. Sip, esa es la suerte de él, y su novia; la lindura, va a estar para salvarlo siempre.
Lo que me molestaba del manga es que se me hacía tan poco creíble y algo que me hizo enojar, de verdad. Es que su novia un día le muestra sentimientos y ¿saben qué pensó? mi novia, la fiera que es una lindura, tiene sentimientos. Si, me dieron ganas de brincar por la ventana.
¿Qué le hizo pensar al autor que una mujer solo por ser más fuerte y "menos delicada" (digo eso entrecomillas) le hace no tener sentimientos? Es algo que honestamente no entiendo y que se tiró el manga por completo para mí.
Después me enteré que son millones de volúmenes y agradezco salirme a tiempo.
Una frase o más bien, un pensamiento que se repetía cada 3 hojas que me dieron ganas de arrancarme los ojos.
Tengo que admitir que si fue algo que me llamó la atención en un principio, pero después de la manera en la que fue ejecutada, me dieron ganas de aventar este manga por la ventana.
Algo positivo de este libro es que te voltea los papeles. Ya no es el chico que siempre salva a la chica, sino al revés. Porqué él, tiene la peor suerte del mundo. Si un avión va caer, su suerte se va asegurar que sea en su casa; sino hay ningún coche en la calle, mágicamente sale uno cuando va a cruzar; si está en un desierto, lastimosamente va a pisar arenas movedizas. Sip, esa es la suerte de él, y su novia; la lindura, va a estar para salvarlo siempre.

This romantic manga follows the high school adventures of Izumi, a shy guy who’s a bit clumsy and his cute pink-haired girlfriend Shikimori always by his side. On the outside, they basically look like your average puppy-love high school couple, but it’s definitely more than that. She may look cute, but Shikimori has a bold, daring personality that’ll turn in an instant when she helps her boyfriend. We see them do many things couples do like going to the movies, skiing together and meeting his parents.
It does have a few flaws, yet “Shikimori” is a entertaining and feel-good love story that’s as sweet as bubblegum. Shikimori is “the” best part as her personality flips are just so cool and funny as she definitely shows she’s not just a pretty face. The flaws now are that it’s story doesn’t really feel grounded yet with it’s very short chapters being about a few pages each, and Izumi’s clumsiness getting dull at times. I’m still eager to see where their romance will go and more of Shikimori’s boldness. pc. 160 p. B+ (83%/Very Good)

3/5 Beautiful art but very little plot and a bit too sweet and cutesy. Izumi and Shikimori are dating high schoolers. The gag here is that Izumi is jinxed and is terribly accident prone and Shikimori is always having to come to his rescue. It’s more of a slice of life gag manga than a romance which is a bit of a bummer.
My complaints for the manga would be. Izumi spends most of the volume praising Shikimori in his head. It gets a little grating after awhile. There’s very little plot so far and I blew through this volume in about 30 minutes.
However it has its sweet and funny moments that aren’t overbearing and the art is fantastic so I’ll give it another volume or 2 and see if it grows on me or the plot deepens.

This reminds me a lot of Fly me to The Moon.
It's cute but not great. It's smaller chapters so it's breezy but it basically has kind of a wimpy main guy who just thinks his girlfriend is super cute and adorable 95% of the time that is his entire dialogue. Shikimori though is a fun character, her faces are different for sure. So while not a banger of a start, it's a fun one, and nice to see the two main leads already dating. I'll continue on!

Los primeros capítulos se me han hecho algo repetitivos… luego ya la cosa va mejorando, y se vuelve una historia más completa, y los personajes son menos estereotipados. Tiene humor y momentos muy monos.
Lo mejor el dibujo en el que se pueden distinguir trazos. Habrá que ver si sigue a mejor en próximos tomos 😊

Shikimori tends to be more coordinated and hero-es que while her boyfriend is a klutz and always needs saving, which i loved seeing the roles reversed like that’ Adorable first volume, but I hope the rest elaborate on why Shikimori is the way she is or else I can see it getting repetitive.

This is more like a comic strip than an actual graphic novel. Like reading 150 pages of Garfield all at once. The characters are cute and nice, but I would have liked a bit more plot.

I don't like manga that has a lot of word bombing, so much so that the panels and the art are often hidden or overlooked because of how much writing there is. I found it repetitive and quite boring.
