Cambric Creek #2

Sweet Berries

Rate this book
Grace has a job she loves, a community she adores, and plenty of friends . . . but her lack of bedroom action has left this event planner too horny to think.

When one ill-advised night at the bar leads to her giving an exhibitionistic show to an unknown presence outside her bedroom window, she thinks she’s hit a new low. When her voyeur turns out to be a nebbishly charming mothman, Grace needs to decide if she can trust her body — and her heart — with this garnet-eyed stranger before he flys out of her life for good.

Sweet Berries is a monster/human romance featuring high heat and a lot of heart, with a guaranteed HEA. It is the second book in the Cambric Creek Steamy Sweet Monster Romance series.

C.M. Nascosta is an author and professional procrastinator from Cleveland, Ohio. As a child, she thought that living on Lake Erie meant one was eerie by nature, and her corresponding love of all things strange and unusual started young. She’s always preferred beasts to boys, the macabre to the milquetoast, the unknown darkness in the shadows to the Chad next door. She lives in a crumbling old Victorian with a scaredy-cat dachshund, where she writes nontraditional romances featuring beastly boys with equal parts heart and heat, and is waiting for the Hallmark Channel to get with the program and start a paranormal lovers series.

This was really cute and light, and I now have 'moth genitalia' in my search history. So that's something I never thought I'd say, but there it is!

Also I liked that the hero was shy and dorky and like, the heroine did not give a fuck. She found it charming (and so did I).

I'm willing to indulge C.M. Nascosta's insane, labyrinthine, Inception-inspired writing style if the story is, at least, compelling... but compelling this was not.

CMN is great with details. She's so creative. I tend to like unconventional things and I understand what she's trying to do. But, regardless of your intention, if you're not clear and thoughtful with your communication, your audience isn't going to be able to receive your message so what's the point? Your writing style shouldn't pull the reader out of the story, you know? I don't want to sound like an asshole who thinks they're qualified to offer advice to a published author, but I really think CMN would benefit from less convoluted writing. She needs an editor who's extremely Type A and has heavy Virgo placements. It would be a match made in Heaven.

Writing style aside, this was both weirdly vulgar and weirdly boring. Our heroine is so casually, nonchalantly, insanely horny that she was giving me secondhand embarrassment. She didn't seem like a confident woman embracing her sexuality— she just seemed unstable.

On their own, none of these individual points are enough to make me dislike a book, but... tallied up, it made for a narrative that didn't really do anything for me on any level.

And lastly— our mothman's anatomy was essentially a penis hidden behind a vagina-like crevice that self-lubricates when aroused and I'm not gonna lie, I was kind of living for that. I wouldn’t necessarily call it hot, but it was definitely funny and weird. In a good way.

Gosh I love CM Nascosta. Full disclosure we've been mutuals on IG probably since 2020 and I'm on her Patreon. But I would be straight up if I didn't enjoy this book and GODS, I enjoyed it so much.

CMN is one of my queens of monster romance. Ruby Dixon is my alien queen. Finley Fenn is my dark orc queen. CMN and Lillian Lark are my monster queens - the ones who write about everything from an orc to a shifter to a demon to a mothman.

I remember this story when it was on Tumblr and it works so well as a full length story, somewhere between a long novella and a short novel. I loved the way it was split up too: part 1, 2, 3, and HEA.

It was... really hot. Between the up front sexuality of the heroine, the voyeurism (both in part by the hero and the heroine fantasizing about getting a train run on her in her front lawn), and the fascinating mothman genitalia specials... this was maybe her sexiest book?? And book 1 in Cambric Creek took place in a GD minotaur milking farm.

There were a lot of little things that made my heart ache. The heroine recounting the abuse from her previous marriage ("five years of what she was able to recognize now as emotional abuse - of complaints and gaslighting and tiny insults, like microscopic shards of glass beneath her skin, chafing until she bled, an interior wound that never healed, scraping her raw.") and the fact that Merrick, the mothman hero, is so not used to being... included. He's worked for years in cities and labs run by humans where he was othered and left out, down to being forced to wear a human labcoat backwards instead of being offered an adaptive one. It just broke my ding dang heart.

On one hand I would have liked to have seen more of Merrick being included, of realizing that he deserves to have a place and feel like he belongs... but on the other hand I was kind of glad they didn't dwell and just let him embrace his new life in Cambric Creek.

There were so many funny bits.

She was excited to go back to his place, she decided. He's adorable and awkward, and if books and moves have taught us nothing else, it's always the cute nerdy guys who loves to eat pussy.

+

If this was what all mothmen could do, someone needed to alert the media, alert congress! This needed to be the headline of every newspaper, the only story talked about on the news. Hot single mothmen with Dyson-strength tongues and vibrating dicks are in a neighborhood near you!

+

"Gosh, that's too bad. Fuck Night is on this week's calendar, and now you're planning on dying here in front of the onions." A series of outraged clicks accompanied his huff as she turned away, not bothering to hide her smile.

Also, so many sweet parts. Minor spoiler below for vows of love but... c'mon, you know there were gonna be vows of love.

"Say that again." He advanced on her slowly, pulling her into his arms.
"Say-which part, I said a lot of stuff."
His laugh was a low rumble of thunder, a vibration she felt rippling through her.
"The part where you said you fell in love with me."
"It was an accident," she whispered. "I wasn't looking for a relationship. I knew you weren't going to be here long and I-I didn't mean for it to happen. But you're just too damn fluffy to resist."
He smoothed the halo of frizz back off her face, tilting her chin with a velutinous hand. "That's okay. I fell in love with you very intentionally. That makes up for it, I think."

Phew…well, if there’s one thing we can all agree on with Grace…she’s definitely not shy. Masturbating towards an open window with an unknown peeper, inviting them in? Like sign me up, right?! Luckily Merrick, our resident mothman, was happy to oblige. Now I am a gigantic cryptid nerd. And I’ve read some mind-bending stuff about gay bigfeet, loch ness monsters, minotaurs, birdmen, mermen, Clippy from Microsoft Word, and God only knows what else. Just interspecies sex everywhere. Like a deranged zoo in mind. But this was my first mothman. And not only is he a master of cunnilingus, but he also ejaculates a bucket of genetic material, and has a vibrating reproductive stem. So Grace achieves enough orgasms to get brain damagee. And they have sex like a ton here. And it’s some of the sexiest stuff I’ve read. Like really well done. Very detailed and adventurous, with a little filth in there, but mostly kept on a somewhat classy level. So the premise is creative, the sex is great, and the book even incorporates a lot of humor, especially between Grace and her coworkers. However, it is very hard to follow at times, with tons of characters and situations being piled onto the reader at several points. And that was quite disorienting. However, the sex is what matters most in a book like this and that was stellar. This rivals Regine Abel’s romances, which I’ve held as the standard for a long time now.

I wonder what kind of sounds he’ll make when I try to suck his soul through his cock.

Spice: 🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️🌶️

The moral of this story is: Leave your windows open when masturbating because the future love of your life might be peeping on a tree.

Well, this was a bit more boring than I thought it would be given its content. Monster smut can be a lot of things: nonsensical, horny, cringy, too ridiculous for the human mind to comprehend, but never boring. I liked Grace and Merrick a lot, even though their meet-cute is one of the most absurd and questionable of the sort I've encountered so far (or because of it, more like), yet I couldn't really get into the story as quickly as I thought I would. It felt as if any moment without smut or romance in it was dragging on. Thankfully, the smut is more absurd than I could have ever predicted, and it actually balanced things out for me. A little gross, too. It's not everyone who can think of a retractable penis stored in...bodily lube. Or an incredibly flexible tongue longer than a hose. It's why we read these things, though, right?

I am really excited for this one! I am happy the cover has a visualization for what a moth man looks like because I was drawing a blank lol.

*Update after reading 6/4/22
This was a cute character driven story with low angst. What I like about the Cambric Creek series is that the heroines really have a lot of character development and get the chance to enter a new chapter of their lives. I did have some issues but overall this was a good time; Just a day spent in a monstrous town.

Take me, Mothman! If the hot-for-Minotaur titillations of The Morning Glory Milking Farm got you randy for humanoid bulls, just wait until discovering the velvety embrace of a winged Mothman.

Clicking and chirruping in the tree outside, Grace is at first unaware of Merrick the Mothman peeping through her window as she plays with her goblin cock dildo. The mysterious presence is not undesired, however, and when a long tongue—equipped to slurp up berry juice—slides into her bedroom, she doesn't complain one bit.

Upon formal introduction to the shy, studious and nocturnal Mothman, Grace can't wait to see what he can do when not just peeping. But there's a lot to think about. Cambric Creek is an interspecies community, yet she's never considered what it would be like to bang a Mothman. Moths have caterpillars, not regular babies—would that be a problem? How does one coax out his internal reproductive organ? How big will it be? Can a girl safely take it?

So, so much thought goes into human-Mothman relations and I'm honestly here for it. The reveal of supernatural moth dick abilities is a literary build-up for the ages and does not disappoint. The world of Cambric Creek is also carefully expanded after the first book, with insight into local politics and how the community serves its diverse residents.

I figured The Morning Glory Milking Farm was a one-off cultural phenomenon, but Sweet Berries is actually even better. From now on I'm leaving my bedroom windows wide open!

“Hot single mothmen with Dyson-strength tongues and vibrating dicks are in a neighborhood near you!”

So, not as good as MGMF unfortunately. A bit disappointing for me.
The book is divided into three parts, all told from Grace’s perspective. Part one started off on the right foot, we see a woman recovering from an emotionally abusive marriage, looking for a hook up but not wanting commitment. It starts off as exhibitionism and voyeurism (on her and his part respectively) and goes up to their first meeting. Merrick is a shy adorkable hero (we know he is adorkable because the author reminds of us of this at least a half dozen times) and is not an alpha type at all but he is loveable.
In part two Grace really takes charge of their sexual relationship and is most often the initiator. But part two was a slag to get through. This author is really descriptive in her language and goes way overboard describing every single part of the minutia of Grace’s job and goes on and on about Merrick’s scientific work on the environmental and agricultural impacts on pollinators. Ya guys, as boring as that was for you to read me explaining it, it’s way way more boring reading pages of it in the book.
When we do finally get to the sexy times (which is why we are here after all, it’s called Monster Bait for a reason) it is very interesting, imaginative, descriptive and hot. The dynamic between the couple was cute and I liked both of them.
This book would have been much better if it focussed more on the interactions between the two, their personal growth and couple-hood and left a lot of the other detail out.
Also the word viscous was used way more than necessary in any book.
Overall I liked this book, but had to skim a great deal of it. This author has talent and is great at original story telling, world building and smut, just overall this book was too wordy and some deletion and good editing would have benefitted it a lot.

If I have said it once I will say it again. A narration can make or break a book and for the most part I seem to be lucky with finding outstanding narrators who are able to bring an author's story to life but Sweet Berries was not the case...

Reading this book on my own would have been the way to go for sure, because Merrick was just the cutest Mothman who has ever existed!!

Originally, I was going to skip this book because in my head I couldn't get over the whole moth thing but once I really get to see his heart and the quirkiness behind the man, I was halfway in love. Then his uh... member. That was quite interesting. I've read my fair share of monster peen but nothing quite like that before. Worth the read entirely for that reason alone.

Let's just say Grace was not my favorite. At times I really felt like she wanted the Mothman and other times I felt like she was pushing him too hard to be something she wanted. Not his true self.

Basically, I can't really suggest you read this book but if you decide you want to there will be a couple of moments that will have your knickers taking notice. Heed my warning though....

*I will not bash a narrator because they aren't my cup of tea. *

After enjoying Morning Glory Milking Farm, I snatched this up when I saw it on KU. It pains me to say it, but this lost its sparkle. Major bummer. It felt a lot like my reading experience with I Married A Merman. ZZZzzz

My biggest problem was there wasn’t much of a plot other than following around Grace… and her character has no depth other than being super/rabid horny all the time.

She was too horny to think rationally and was about to make a miscalculation in judgment born of imprudent arousal and nothing more

before Brogan came back and she slid beneath the table to suck his cock right there in front of their coworkers.

or the way she pressed her thighs together as she separated the cutlery

she was likely to become horny enough to go writhing around on the sidewalk like a cat in heat, yowling and offering her pussy to any passersby that wanted to fill it.

coming across her like one of those ridiculous, needy cat girls, and pulling out their cocks then helping themselves, made her dizzy with desire. You're so far gone, you'd let them all take a turn, she thought with a little moan.

clouded by mindless lust

Too horny to think.

She squirmed in her seat, thinking of her neighbor and the far from innocent neighborly thoughts she'd had.

Merrick for his part, isn’t much better. He’s portrayed as an awkward, stuttering, nerdy, beta-male.

"E-excuse me . . . " The voice was low and deep and sent an undulating shiver

This tall stranger had an air of timid skittishness about him that she found sweet

He couldn’t stop fidgeting, shuffling his feet in the gravel and wringing the long, spindly fingers that dangled from his hands.

The slender moth still looked as though he were contemplating escape, his eyes casting about, his wings fluttering nervously.

His wings fluttered nervously, the fluffy antennae atop his head twitching wildly.

Personally, I prefer an alphamale, but I can get behind a sweet beta romance (Ehd is one of my all-time fav H’s), but I need to feel it. I found both mc’s likable, but I needed more character/romance development. I never felt like I really “knew” either of them, so I didn’t connect or become invested in their story. Also, with all the clenching and fire spreading through her thighs paired with his fidgeting and stuttering… it made the relationship feel shallow (based on sex for her and worship for him) rather than sweet.

Bottom Line- I love a creative, quirky, alien looking H romance, and the author does a nice job with this genre, but this one was a miss for me. I didn’t connect to the characters. There wasn’t really any conflict, challenges, or tension to spruce up the plot. I felt it had more filler details (large chunks of “work” filler where they discuss weddings, seasonal pollinators, and agriculture) than MGMF and numerous flashbacks that slowed the pace way down. And, I found the smut more vulgar/crass than sexy. Basically, a disappointment for me, but I do plan to give the next one a shot before jumping ship.

Well it wasn't Morning Glory Milking Farm. It wasn't perfect, a little repetitive maybe - but I still liked it!

Sweet berries had a completely different energy to it, different kink, different mood. But I loved the shy hero, the daily lives of a fun community, all of those things was probably what made some people mad.

I also see somebody was super unhappy with the next book but I'll wait a little and get to it too at some point.

This book had an interesting premise, but it lacked the luster of MGMF and The Mabon Feast. The h was bizarre. I didn’t think she was human with her description of being in heat, but then it was confirmed she was. I’m not a huge fan of insecure beta males, so the stuttering Mothman was a disappointment. There wasn’t enough dialogue to determine his personality except that he was a bit flaky. This just didn’t hold my attention and I didn’t think the MC’s had much chemistry. I’ll keep trying this author because I love their creativity, but this one just didn’t do it for me.

I don't know what to think about this book. I really enjoyed Morning Glory Milking Farm so maybe I went into this read with expectations that were too high?

While we didn't get Merrick's POV, I enjoyed learning about him through Grace's eyes. He's a quieter, academic mothman who can be awkward at times and arrogant at others. The setting of the farm and food makes the book really sweet. And like the first book, there are little worldbuilding details that make the world so full, from how clothing is adapted to fit different species to discussions about inter-species politics.

Unfortunately, this book was a slog to get through, which I really wasn't expecting after the first book. It could be because there's not a lot of tension in this book, internal or external. The plot feels quite minimal which is great if you're just looking for a fluffy read but I personally was hoping for more meat to the story. But it's not that the book is more heavy on the character development either, because I didn't feel either character was deeply developed.

It was an alright book but I probably wouldn't have continued with the Cambric Creek series if I read this before Morning Glory Milking Farm.

This is a single POV book (Grace's POV only) that's quite steamy. Grace references her ex-husband who was emotionally abusive but it isn't discussed in much detail.

DNF @ 83%

I know this is a pretty late DNF but this book is only about 180 pages so I haven’t wasted too much time on it.

Don’t get me wrong, the romance was very enjoyable. Merrick is the cutest love interest ever, omg he was so sweet 😭 I love him. But where this falls down for me is that our MC Grace would just go on so many tangents and monologise about random shit. At one point I think Merrick was flirting with her and it was all cute, meanwhile Grace is thinking about her orc neighbours? Girl, I don’t care about them.
Merrick also asks her a question and for a whole page Grace is internally monologising and then she’s like “oh I didn’t even answer his question” YEAH, I KNOW.

Also she kinda had a thing with her co-worker at the beginning that was kinda smutty, they never hooked up but there was some touching under tables etc, and at the point I got to she never actually outright told him she’s no longer interested. She starts brushing off his flirting but never does she say “I’m actually involved with someone else now, so I’d appreciate if you moved on” idk just something, especially when she keeps thinking that she’s falling for Merrick. Just seemed a bit weird?

I’m pretty disappointed because I really enjoyed the first book in this series (the romance, the MC’s life and friends, etc.) but with this I really didn’t care for anything outside the romance. I didn’t care about Grace’s job or her friends, her dryad friend was actually quite annoying tbh. She was obsessed with getting Grace in a relationship, which was a bit odd. I only cared about Merrick, I didn’t even like Grace all that much lol.

I will read the next book in the series because I know I can enjoy C.M. Nascosta’s writing but I just found myself waiting for any romantic/smutty scenes because that’s all I was there for by the end, everything else just seemed like a drag.

Prepare for a toothache because this is the sweetest piece of fluff I think you'll ever get from C.M. Nascosta. Merrick the Mothman is sweet, nerdy, and adorable - a smarty pants, sans pants in a lab coat. He literally flies into Grace's life while she's having a private intimate moment and boy does she give him a show. What lured him to her tree outside her window, you'll have to read the book for that. His return visit is just as if not as exciting as the first...holy smokes!

Grace was looking for a relationship, but just a good time. However, Merrick proved to be stimulating in more ways than one and the anatomy of a mothman and the capabilities they possess are earth-soul shattering. Being in Cambric Creek opened Merrick's eyes to interspecies relations as he found himself being treated more like a fellow co-worker and found the town more accepting of others. Grace was his first human partner ever. Grace may not have intentionally fell in love but the heart wants what it wants and mine now wants more of Grace and Merrick. Don't wait to read this gem. Mothmen... who knew?!

This girls creativity is really inspiring. It takes some kind of imagination to come up with this stuff! This mothman x human species crossover was wild.
Went into this with zero expectations and now I have questions about moth anatomy.
Will continue the series for research purposes.

Title: Sweet Berries
Author: C.M. Nascosta
Genre: Monster Romance
Type: Standalone Book 2 of Cambric Creek series
POV: First Person - Female
Rating:

Part of Grace’s job was to please people, but she had problem pleasing herself. That was until a night of liberation led her to Merrick, the new mothman in town.

Grace was ok, but I wished her character had more dimension. Merrick had an interesting anatomy and very talented in performing. His mannerisms were also endearing. The plot was very light in this one, but I still enjoyed the overall story.

Sweet Berries is a story of grabbing opportunities. It would appeal to readers who enjoy a sweet monster romance.

What has happened?? The sexy blurb I read a while back of this book has been bloated with extra words/filler. 2.5 stars, rounded to 3 since I found 1 funny line about wearing pants in the whole thing.

Some spoilers-

Blackberries- that whole sexy scene didn’t play out well for me, all I could think of was how sticky that would be. All over my face? Hmm.

I didn’t like that Grace was a Tease, letting Brogan finger her under the table and then leaving him? How many times did we hear what a bad idea having sex with a co-worker was and she kept flirting and encouraging him? Not fair.

And don’t get me started with the editing that this book needed. It jumped around all over the place. Just when I thought I had it figured out- bam, jumped again.
Lots of extra internal dialogue “catching us up” between conversations- just off putting. Her whole marriage and divorce things was super confusing to me.

It could have been way steamier and sweet, just unfortunately went off the rails. I don’t feel like I got know Merrick at all, didn’t connect with his character but I would have liked to!

The person most shocked by my rating: me. Idk what happened in this one. Morning Glory Milking Farm was a whole damn rollercoaster but I was happy to be along for the ride. This second book set in the same world was just not good to me. I found the writing confusing at times and boring. Grace annoyed me. Her mothman was a sweetie but I just didn’t feel the umph. I need more to my romances and honestly this just didn’t cut it for me. It could have had half as many pages and told the same story. The blurb and sneak peek for book 3 sounds way better, more clinical and taboo like book 1. I’m definitely gonna give it a read and hopefully have a better experience.

Oh wow. I've read a mothman romance before but he was an alpha dude and I guess I didn't know how much I needed a nerdy, science geek mothman romance to fill the void in my life. But I have it and it did and I'm so pleased. This book was absolutely brilliant. Just the right amount of kinky. Just the right amount of spice. Perfect balance of adorable characters, side plot, pollination information, and sex. I'm freaking loving this series.

Yeah, naaah Haha this wasn’t for me.

2nd book in this zootopia-esque world, and it was not as good as the first book (which isn’t actually saying much tbh) 🤣

I skimmed a lot of this 😬
