Fractured Souls

Rate this book

Humans are dying in San Francisco. The most shunned angel on Earth may very well hold the key as to why...

When Cassius Black moves to San Francisco for a fresh start, the angel's hopes of staying below the radar of the supernatural organizations that oversee the otherworldly and magic users in the city are dashed when he stumbles across a dead body in the sewers. His grim discovery soon puts him in the sight of the Argonaut Agency and Francis Strickland, the bureau director who knows his darkest secrets.

Morgan King and his team of Argonaut agents have been hunting for the culprits behind a series of gruesome killings that have rocked the city all summer. Killings that bear sinister hallmarks of sacrificial rituals where the victims’ souls have been ripped from their bodies. When Fate brings Cassius in Morgan’s path, he realizes the angel everyone likes to call The Devil may very well be the only person who can help them track down the murderers.

Morgan and Cassius soon find themselves chasing down a sect of black magic sorcerers and cross paths with a mysterious warlock whose actions evoke disturbing echoes of an incident from Cassius's past. As rumors of a potential plot to tear the Nether reach their ears, Cassius and Morgan must work together to defeat their common enemy and save the city from destruction, all while fighting their growing attraction for one another.

"The guy was a good six foot three, stark naked, and had the kind of face and body that would make most modeling agencies and Hollywood casting studios weep for joy."

Well helloooooo Morgan! 🔥🔥🔥

I totally loved this debut m/m urban fantasy novel by Ava Marie Salinger🖤❤️, writing under her new pen-name. It's the first book in her #fallenmessengers series.

In this one, we are introduced to Cassius Black who is a bit of a 'lone wolf' fallen angel (and then some!), whilst Morgan King is the lead investigator of a team of Argonaut agents, hunting down the person/entity responsible for a series of sacrificial, ritual serial killings across San Francisco. The two end up in bed together on the case - literally and figuratively 😁😈.

If you're into paranormal urban fantasy, angels and demons, all types of magic, plus a whole load of snark and steam (and yep, things get pretty steamy🔥), then Fractured Souls is the book for you.

Highly recommended.

I didn't jump on this one right away because I was butt hurt from the prequel...yes, it was my own pet peeves, and a few of them in the beginning of this one annoyed me as well. But I persisted, and I enjoyed it for the most part.

Things I liked: Salinger created a fascinating new world where angels, demons, and other creatures inhabit Earth due to the fall.

Cassius and Morgan. I loved them individually and how drawn they were to each other from the beginning. I'm looking forward to seeing where they go from here in their relationship.

Loki. I want to see more of him.

My niggles with this one? So many characters were introduced at once and all active at once. This one moves, that one moves, this one talks that one talks. It rattled my brain.

My other niggle? Dance, dancing, danced. A search gave roughly 44 instances, but it seemed like so many more. There were some pages where it was used multiple times and places where I thought it odd for something to have 'danced'.

"A muscle danced in Cassius's jawline..."
"He danced his hands down Morgan's torso..."
"...their hands dancing briskly on each other's straining dicks."

Maybe it's just me...

I'll still read the next one hoping the 'dancing' is toned down a bit, and I want to know how this all plays out.

Demigods, Witches and things that go bump in the night. Was unleased after the "Fall". This is a franchise I can get to like. I just got a full year subscription to audible. Yeah for me! #IAWThoughts

I'll advise knowing a chunk of Celestial Patheons before you go any further. Also get some understanding on angel lore.

This was a fun read!

Set in an alternate world, centuries after "The Fall" the world changing event where demons and angels fell from heaven and are now stuck on Earth among humans. With no memory of who they were before The Fall, all powerful beings are still learning more about their magical history, even centuries later.

Fractured Souls follows the story of Cassius, a powerful angel ostracized and demonized for being too powerful and the only angel on Earth with black wings, and Morgan, a detective for the Argonauts and Level 1 powerful angel. Their worlds' collide when Morgan and Cassius meet as neighbours and then are thrust into working the same case of mysterious human deaths.

The story is insta-love but when your souls recognize each other and your love is from beyond this world, who can blame em?

“What?” Morgan asked irritably.
“You’re like a kid who’s been told he can’t play with his favorite toy.” Cassius chuckles.
“Well, you are my favorite toy.” Morgan grumbles.
Cassius’s expression turns serious. “I am?”
Morgan stilled at the silent question in the gray eyes opposite of him. “Yes,” he said quietly, dropping a soft kiss on Cassius’s lips. “You are mine, just as I am yours.”

My only critique was that there was a lot of secondary characters and although it gave their detective team a very found family feel, I found it hard to keep up with who is who + would've liked more attention on Morgan and Cassius. The book left me with a lot of questions (mainly on the case and Cassius' ex boyfriend..) Excited for book 2!

A Solid MM Debut!

Good premise: Angels, demons, and others creatures fell to Earth 500 years ago during a war between the Hells and the Heavens. Now they are stuck and without their memories.

Decent plot: An outcast angel is asked to join a supernatural force seeking to solve mysterious human murders.

Room for improvement: Watch out for repeated phrases and words. World building had some inconsistencies. Would angels have completely modern speech and mannerisms? Would someone who’s been around for millennia be embarrassed by sex? And, like other reviewers noted, the reader gets a lot of characters introduced in a short amount of time.

Audiobook: Sometimes the characters proved difficult to differentiate, but the narrator did a good job.

My rec? I’m going to to the second book because I liked the story well enough. Now that I know who is who, I’m hoping to enjoy the second book better.

I mean it was okay...
Loved the world-building BUT the chemistry between the MCs was off
I ended up shipping the MC with his Demon ex instead of his current love interest

I have a soft spot for demons *shrugs*

Overall there was a lot going on, the audiobook held my attention. The beginning of the book was good, but after awhile it just felt as though there was more and more information revealed and I just was getting bored…

I am probably not going to continue. But the writing is also what kept me entertained, I think it was well written but I just…🤷🏽‍♀️

Intriguing premise but I was 50/50 on the execution (seems to be a running trend with my current reads😭)

The world building was the highlight of this and it’s clear the author has put thought into it. The MCs also had great chemistry even though they were a bit insta-lovey (side effect of the fated mates trope? Can’t say for sure). But they felt a little immature for centuries-old beings who’ve supposedly fought in wars, commanded legions, and are now responsible for keeping the peace between angels, demons, witches et al.

It was a bit of a turn off for me and tbh I clocked out 30% into the book and was just along for the ride to the finish line.

Audiobook review: 5 stars.
Alex Kydd is the sole reason I got to the end.

Expect
- Edging
- Strict top / bottom
- Fated mates
- Instalove
- Coworkers / neighbours-to-lovers
- Found family
- Overpowered MC

Definitely needs some editing. And some research omfg- if you're not sure about something you either research it or not talk about it at all, not write about it and then look stupid.

Would've given it 5 stars too if it weren't for some of the ignorant shit there.

This is a new to me author, and she did not disappoint. I did read the prequel and you do get some idea behind why Cassius is so hated by just about everyone. I was not a huge fan of Victor so I'm glad that they are not continuing as a couple. So we have Cassius moving to the states to get a fresh start, but he is still hated & it's crushing to see him living this type of life. Things start to perk up when he runs into Morgan who is the leader of a team of Argonaut agents. Morgan feels something when they first met, but he isn't sure what it is. Initially Morgan suspects that Cassius is somehow involved and mistrusts him, and almost kills him. Cassius just mistrusts everyone because he has been stabbed in his back way to many times. Cassius begrudgingly agrees to help them with the investigation of ritual murders that are similar to what Cassius battled back in London. And even though he killed Tania, who was behind the gruesome deaths back then, these deaths are eerily similar. This is a book that you have to pay attention to what is going on. There are a lot of references to different types of angels & demons. I would really recommend you bookmark the glossary so you can reference it. I sometimes got a little bit lost when the author was describing things. When the angels & demons "fell", they lost their memories from before. Not only does Morgan & Cassius' souls know each other they know that they belong together. They each awaken dormant powers in the other & it was a sight to see in my minds eye. I can't wait for the next book in the series.

I received a copy of this book from Gay Romance Reviews and this is my honest opinion.

“You should marry him.”
Morgan rose from his chair. “He’s already mine. Putting a ring on his finger is neither here nor there.”
Cassius narrowed his eyes, annoyed. “Since when was I yours?”

Plotwise this book got everything I like in urban fantasy. Demons, angels and other otherworldlies working under made-up agencies. A mystery the MCs have to solve. Also, I liked that even though there were many new descriptions, there was no need to check the glossary every two pages.

description

Probably, my main problem was the characters. I just couldn't connect with any of them, except for the demon cat because it was a cutie. And I’ve got to admit that I was a little bit curious about Victor , Cassius’s ex. I wanted to know more about him. But the rest? Were forgettable for me. I’m not against having some comic relief secondaries, what’s more I enjoyed them; but in this case I found them a little bit annoying.

Regarding the MCs, Cassius and Morgan’s interactions weren’t remarkable for me. Although, since this is a series that follows the same couple I’m hopeful that this might change in the future.
Also, I’m sure this is probably just me but I felt that I’d have enjoyed the dialogues between them more, especially when they were having sex, if the sentences wouldn’t have finished with exclamation points (!). They'd have sounded less cringy, IMO.

Two angels. A connection beyond their knowledge. I’m curious about where this series is going.

“I’m sorry,” he chortled. “Did we wake you?”
Cassius frowned, more than a little incensed. “Our bedrooms are next to one another, so yeah, Mr. I-can’t-keep-my-dick-in-my-pants!”

3.75⭐️

Honestly, I wasn’t sure if I was going to like this book. It’s been on my TBR for a while, and for me, it was a little too horny too fast. I was looking for a nice urban fantasy with some great lore — and I thought that’s what I was getting. Actually, I don’t even know what I was expecting.

What I got was your typical contemporary romance comedy, set in an urban fantasy world filled with angels, demons, witches, and all that jazz. Interesting combo. This is basically a fated mates from a past life kind of romance, where they’re also trying to stop evil cultists from destroying the world — because, you know, they’re cops or whatever.

Once I got over the disappointment that this wasn’t going to be some epic, lore-heavy fantasy (which I was kind of hoping for), I actually ended up enjoying it. There’s some pretty solid world-building sprinkled in, along with characters that are genuinely fun to read. The side characters actually feel like real friends who tease each other, and our main couple are horny as hell but total badasses too.

I can’t say much more without spoiling things, but overall, I liked it — and I might even read the next one.

TL;DR: Horny angels fuck and save the city.

Angels, Demons, sorcerers, ritual killings and a cat called Loki… Oh, my! This is going to be good...
And it was good. Sort of. The world building is great, the mystery intriguing, the characters appealing. There is action and secrets unveiled, and lots of humour mixed with some gory elements… Everything is great but for one thing. There is a romance between the main characters, Morgan and Cassius, of the I-love-to-hate-you sort. And there is some kind of romantic relationship or liaison seeming to go on between many other of the characters in the story. No problem there. What I did not enjoy was the excess of sexual encounters shared between Morgan and Cassius. Sex scenes work for me as long as they bring something to the story (i.e. resolving the sexual tension between characters or showing a deeper connection between them…). But an excess of them makes me lose interest and slow the pace of the plot… I found myself basically skipping them. The second half of the book is less action of one kind, and more action of the other… It put a damper on what had been a great start.
Anyway I must recognise I enjoyed the plot, and will read the next book just to find out the secrets behind these interesting characters
I received a copy of this book, and this is my honest review.

A Joyfully Jay review.

4.25 stars

Fractured Souls is the first book in Ava Marie Salinger’s new Fallen Messengers series. It is also the author’s first work under this urban fantasy pen name. I have been on a big urban fantasy kick lately, so I grabbed this one as soon as I read the blurb, and I wasn’t disappointed.

First off, the story has some great world building. Salinger gives us a world with angels and demons fallen to Earth and living among humans. They have a variety of powers, and while many seem to be accepted by humans, Cassius definitely stands out among both the supernatural and humans alike for his differences and abilities. Added to that, the Fall jump started magical abilities among humans, so we have three different types of magic and powers going on here. Salinger has really developed this world, including everything from the various agencies that govern the supernatural, to the types of weapons, and the way magic works among different practitioners.

I've given this a B- for narration and a B for content at AudioGals, so 3.5 stars rounded up.

Fractured Soulsis the first book in Ava Marie Salinger’s Fallen Messengers urban fantasy series in which angels and demons fell to Earth some five hundred years ago. The world the author has created is fascinating, the worldbuilding is really good, and the plot is fast-paced and action packed, but the storytelling is hampered by the introduction of too many characters at once (making it hard to keep track of who is who and who they all work for), and the romance is underdeveloped.

Like all the Fallen, Cassius Black, the most feared angel of them all, has no idea of who he was before. For years, he’s been doing his best to live under the radar and avoid interaction with the various magical and supernatural organisations that have been nothing but trouble for him in the past. Recently re-located from London to San Francisco, Cassius has taken on the job of looking for a missing cat and finds much more than he bargained for when he stumbles across said cat – a demon cat – down in the sewers, hiding from a huge Lucifugous demon that’s snacking on some human remains. After dispatching the demon, Cassius is able to see the disturbing signs of some sort of black magic ritual involving the dead man – clearly the Lucifugous didn’t kill the human. But if he didn’t – who did?

In the early hours of the morning, Cassius is rudely awakened – again – by the loud sex noises coming through the bedroom wall he shares with the apartment next door. Whoever lives there seems insatiable – he brings home a different man or woman every night and they go at it several times a night; Cassius hasn’t had a decent night’s sleep in the two weeks since he moved in. Completely fed up, he’s making some coffee when his apartment door is busted open and a group of Argonaut (law enforcement for the Fallen and the magical) agents enters intent on arresting him for murder. In the midst of the chaos, Cassius is surprised to see his neighbour entering, and even more surprised when he addresses the agents as though he knows them.

Well. Damn.

Cassius learns that his noisy neighbour is Morgan King and that he and his team at the agency have been investigating a series of ritualistic killings which have targeted humans. Morgan’s boss – who knows Cassius and has worked with him before (much to the surprise of his agents) asks Cassius for his help, but he isn’t interested. For years, the four organisations that govern the supernatural world have used his particular skills when they needed them and then washed their hands of him once they were done, and he wants nothing to do with any of them. But someone is stealing and fracturing human souls, souls which can be used to open a doorway between worlds, which points to whoever is behind it wanting to open the Nether and unleash chaos upon Earth. When the owner of the demon cat – whom he’s named Loki – is brutally murdered, Cassius realises he can’t just stand aside and allow more innocents to die. He agrees to work with Argonaut – just this one time.

There’s a lot to enjoy about this story – the premise is interesting and Cassius is a fascinating character. He’s been ostracised, feared and hated by his own kind for centuries simply because he’s regarded as being too powerful. He’s badass yet vulnerable, too; he’s led a very lonely existence for the most part, and it’s kinda cute but also a bit sad when doesn’t quite know what to make of it when Morgan’s team accepts him and makes clear that they’ll have his back in exactly the same way they have one another’s. Morgan, on the other hand, is somewhat two-dimensional; he’s a bit of a dickhead to start with, and I found him hard to warm to until quite a way into the book.

The world-building is particularly good, from the invention of four agencies that govern the supernatural world, to the way magic works for different beings and the types of weapons they can use. I like the idea of a found-family/work team who look out for each other without question, but the problem here is that so many are introduced at once, it’s hard to keep track. When Cassius arrives at Argonaut HQ, he meets the other members of Morgan’s team (there are… five of them?) and we’re immediately told what they look like and what they are (sorcerer, enchanter, witch, aqueous demon etc.). Then there’s a discussion that introduces the other agencies – Cabalista, Hexa, The Order of Rosen – it’s kind of info-dumpy, and a lot to take in. From reading reviews of the book, it seems that there’s a glossary at the front, but that’s not present in the audio version – even if it was, it would be impractical, unless it was provided as a pdf. And even if it was supplied, being able to cross-check until you get used to remembering doesn’t negate the fact that the audience is bombarded with way too much information in one go, and the introduction of the characters doesn’t feel organic.

Speaking of not feeling organic brings me to the romance. I hadn’t realised, when I requested this title for review, that the romance is of the ‘fated mates’ variety; it’s not a trope I’m fond of. In this story, Cassius and Morgan know instantly that there’s some kind of connection between them – although at this stage they have no idea what it is. This is an on-going series featuring the same central couple, so there is obviously room for things to develop, but in this book, it’s pretty superficial; they have lots of sex, but I don’t really know what they see in each other other than ‘he’s hot’ and this mysterious connection. I am intrigued by that, however, and I presume that as the story arc progresses, they will find out exactly what binds them to each other, but I can only judge what I’ve listened to so far, which was all tell and no show.

That brings me to something else that really bothered me. The writing in the sex scenes is… off. We get things like this – “his tongue lashing eagerly against Morgan’s as he frenched him” (Frenching? Seriously?!) and – “He anchored himself to Morgan and rolled his hips sexily, mimicking the act of lovemaking.” The act of lovemaking? Have we wandered into a Victorian romance? And I could really have done without the mention of “back passages” spasming or pulsing or “quivering with ripples of intense pleasure”. I know this author writes contemporary m/f romance under another name and as far as I can tell this is her first foray into m/m. Um. I’ll just leave that here.

The performance by new-to-me narrator Alex Kydd is a bit of a mixed bag. He has a soothing, baritone-range voice and his character voices and pacing are fine (maybe he’s a bit on the slow side at times), but although he does manage a good number of character voices and differentiates well between them all, I couldn’t always tell who was speaking simply because there are SO MANY characters that I just couldn’t remember which voice went with who. That’s not Mr. Kydd’s fault – had there been fewer characters or had they been introduced in smaller groups, I might have been able to spend enough time with them to be able to recognise them by ear. That did happen later with some of them, but it took a while. There are two constant mispronunciations that really bugged me – he pronounces “Cassius” as “Cash-us” and “Adrianne” as “Adrian” – I kept expecting to hear a male character when Adrianne was mentioned. The two leads are easily identifiable though, and he does a good job of relaying Cassius’ snark and of letting his vulnerability show. Overall, however, his performance is a bit too low key; he’s expressive enough in the dialogue, but in the narrative parts he’s much less animated, and the action scenes sound as though he’s just describing a walk in the park. It’s not a bad performance – it just lacks tension and needs some “oomph”as we say over here.

Fractured Souls has a lot going for it and I might continue with the series, but I’m not sure whether that will be in print or audio. The narration is by no means bad, but other narrators have set the bar so high in this kind of material, that it’s hard to be completely satisfied with anything that doesn’t quite meet the same high standard.

Cassius and Morgan are great characters. Their powers are already pretty strong but when they work together they are unstoppable.

Nice world building and a large cast of characters, mostly good guys but the bad guys are really bad. I got drawn into the story right away. It’s hard to go into too much depth cause the reader needs to experience it for themselves.

This story was full of magic, epic battles, fallen angels, witches, demons, snark, and great sex. A demon cat called Loki stole the show. Good book.

Good ideas. Liked the banter.

Cons:
Full cast of Gary Stus and Mary Sues
Lots of stuff happening in the background that had nothing to do with plot or MCs.
Lots of Hetero stuff

Well, I have mixed feelings about this book. As it's always the case with these PN stories, they tend to dump a lot of information and characters in there books, worst for the first one for being the introduction to the series! A lot of demons and angels, sorcerers ... different powers and magic abilities... lots of names. I didn't remember none other than the main MCs!! Maybe my memory is bad ( but seriously, I am an IT business analyst, who studied lots of maths and physics and succeeded, so it can't be that bad 😅😅) ...

I think, I'll let the story settle down a bit in my mind, and then I'll see if I'll continue with the series or not... knowing that I love PNR and UF , like a lot!

Mystery, Fantasy, Romance, all in one book? Yes please!

What an adventure... The mystery was good and I really liked the flow of it. The characters were funny, both main and side characters alike. So much tension,so much mystery, so much humor and action. Amazing. I really love books that combine mystery and romance, but add in paranormal and I am in heaven. The world building was awesome. The world is detailed, logical, consistent and very entertaining. This one really hit the spot. Can't wait for the next one!
P. S. Thanks for the glossary, it really came in handy while I got used to the world ;)

What an amazing first book in this new fantasy MM romance series. This author has built a new version of Earth with some humans finding magic, and a large population of angels and demons after the Fall of some of them from other realms. Before you even start the book, there’s a guide to the different terms and powers of the various sub-races of paranormal creatures and types of magic. You can easily see the amount of effort the author put into the world building before even starting the story.

And the story is fun! It’s mystery/suspense/crime involving a team of investigators from one of the supernatural organizations and an independent operator who everyone seems to revile. The story follows the overall mystery plot but also explores the hidden identities of the two MCs – identities that all angels and demons have forgotten as one of the side-effects of the Fall.

There’s a ton of action, magic, and the mystery is great to see unravelling (though it’s not fully solved in this first book). The romance between the MCs is fiery hot but doesn’t take away from the rest of the story – it enhances it as the two MCs come closer together.

The book will reel you and keep your attention. It’s faced paced and an awesome read. Great first book, can’t wait for more of the series!

This was an amazing start to a brand new series.

I loved the world building and the setting of the story.

The characters were likeable, engaging and well fleshed out.

I loved the author's writing style and the tone of the story.

The action and adventure made it compelling and I look forward to reading more in this series.
