Just an average and amateur fantasy adventure story with Sapphic MC's, who have identities to discover.

Unfortunately it had it's issues. The writing got a bit confusing, having stories within stories, narratives within narratives. There was a lot of info-dump and rambling in order to get across certain information. So it didn't feel organic as it could have.
I felt the same with the world-building. I did very much enjoy the world of Gods and Goddesses and their extended families and powers, who are not perfect people, but have a balancing act to play with the world and the after-world. But it felt clumsily told at times which marred the experience.

The other issue I had was often all the characters simply had the same voice and characteristics. There was rarely anything unique to tell them apart. There was a lot of quippy sarcastic banter, that you could never differentiate between characters. So it got annoying that everyone spoke the same way.

When there was a reveal, it just somehow came too easily and again felt like huge information dumps, but with no real emotion to them. They weren't treated seriously enough, and all the characters felt very one-dimensional, as did the emotion.

However I did like the story overall, it's just one where I feel this is a new writer with some good ideas, but just needs to hone their storytelling skills. It desperately needs some refining and editing, to make it a more cohesive and readable plot, with better emotion and pacing for us to connect better, and make the reading experience more enjoyable.

Shadow Rose is the tale of what happens when the lives of mortals get mixed up in the lives of the gods. This remarkable fantasy is the debut work of Elsie Quail. While the writing feels slightly off in some spots, it doesn’t take away from story. I didn’t take away stars in my rating for two reasons. First, it is entirely possible that what I felt was off was just my English major brain nitpicking. Second, Quail made me cry multiple times. The way she conveys emotion will tear your heart out. My biggest complaint is the follow up to this book is not out yet.

Maeva is the offspring of a human and daemon raised among humans but accepted by only a few. The man who took her in when her family discarded her died when she was 10 leaving her on her own. Her only companion was a shapeshifting eagle. She would soon befriend Kiel, loyal to a fault and always quick with a joke, and Ophelia, and unwanted princess.

Ophelia’s mother disappeared the day her brother drowned. That was the day her father started his downward spiral into madness. When she realized he was hiding something, she set out to find out what it was. What she learned changes her life, and her friends lives, forever. They set off on a quest to right wrongs and fulfill a prophesy. Along the way they learn a lot about themselves and each other.

In many ways this is a coming of age story. It is a story about love, loss, and the family one chooses for themselves. It’s also about self doubt and facing our own personal demons. Maeva, Kiel, and Ophelia’s lives are entangled more deeply than they could ever imagine. Part of me feel like it’s a bit too convoluted, but at the same time I feel like this is the kind of thing that happens when you live in a certain kind of small town.

The book ends on a bit of a cliffhanger, and there are a few unanswered questions I hope are addressed in the next book. In short, I can see Elsie Quail’s name being added to the list of popular fantasy writers.

"Sometimes to figure out who we are, we must find ourselves alone. Through trials and tribulations is how we get stronger, develop a sense of self."

Maeva is faced with the dangerous journey of getting a kidnapped child Goddess back to her rightful place in the underworld. She sets off with her two best friends Ophelia and Kiel, who are her chosen family, and mean the world to her. However as the adventure progresses and gets more dangerous, certain truths are uncovered and she is faced with breaking down the walls around her heart and learning who she can really trust. They soon discover that the Young goddess wasn't the only prisoner taken and they must get the most important prisoner back, or disaster awaits.

I can't even tell you how fun it was to be part of this ARC team!! Hearing the multiple POVs in this story was really enjoyable and it really built up the story!! The Characters were all wonderful and easy to love and relate to! And the world building was easy to follow and not overly dragged out! Thank you so much @elsiequailwrites
For sharing this story with us! I can't wait to read the next in the series!

I have had the pleasure of being part of the ARC team for Shadow Rose, what a beautiful book!

Thank you, Elsie for the experience!

“I was forged in the back alleys of Elecara”

Shadow Rose was a fantastic introduction to the land of Elecara, I especially enjoyed the different fantastical creatures that we came across; it’s great to see so many different portrayals.

A mainly dual POV narrative, Quail brings to life the turbulent times faced by the Afterworld after the Goddess of Flame went missing.

Elsewhere, we explore the found family dynamic of Maeva, Ophelia & Kiel (not forgetting Orion!) Battling their inner daemons along the way.

The parental relationships within Shadow Rose piqued my interest, seeing multiple different parental figures and their feelings towards their children really resonated with me.

A medium paced sapphic fantasy, I found myself reading this every chance I had!

I had the incredible opportunity to be on the ARC team for this great book! Elsie has crafted such a good story with this one and im hanging on waiting for the second one when this one is not even out yet lol

The world building was fantastic! Normally im not super into fantasy books but this one just worked! The way the world was built up and explained made me more into it and connected to the story itself.

Its also queer! Like listen... Any book can win me over with a good queer relationship and this one had an amazing one!

There were also some super cool creepy vibes later into the story and well i was down for it!

There is also two of my all time favorite tropes in this story! Found family and friends to lovers and they were both handled so well!

Highly recommend this book to anyone who wants a fast paced queer fantasy with a great world and neat magic system!

“It is said the Moon was in love with the Sun, and the Sun was in love with the Moon. Their passion burned like an inferno, their loved flowed like water. Stolen kisses of the dead night, words of promise whispered in the soft morning light. A love so complete.”
I had the privilege of reviewing an arc of Shadow Rose by Elsie Quail. I know how much hard work and dedication Elsie put into this book and let me tell you that this story is in no way disappointing. Between the unforgettable characters, the amazing world-building, and the adventure you get to embark on, this is one of my top favorite books. Elsie is an official “I will read anything that she puts out,” author. Great job Elise and I look forward to book 2 and anything else that you write.

TW: Shadow Rose is intended for 18+ due to implied rape and implied domestic violence.

"You are my moon; you are all of my stars. I love you. Not a soul in the Afterworld is ever going to change that."

Thank you, Elsie Quail for giving me a digital advanced copy of Shadow Rose in exchange of an honest review.

Shadow Rose ★★★★

Trigger warnings: domestic abuse (mentioned), child abuse, child death, manipulation, rape (mentioned).

It's been awhile since I have been invested in fantasy books, as I've recently avoided them in favor of lighter romance stories. However, I think that I have to mark my return to this genre with Shadow Rose, a quite stunning sapphic fantasy debut by Elsie Quail, a newly established indie author and bookstagrammer with a passion for fantastic world-building.

Shadow Rose tells a story of Maeva, a 20-ish year old halfling (half-human and half-demon) living in the country of Elecara, who is trusted a prophecy to set out on an adventure to return the daughter of moon and sun to her rightful place in the Afterworld with the help of her best friend Kiel and secret crush Ophelia. It's a dangerous journey to pursue as the company discovers more about themselves and the balance they need to restore.

In writing the plot of the novel, its construction feels confident. Quail seamlessly weaves the narrative, understanding the way she should introduce the conflict and the cast—to reveal everything but nothing about them, which incites curiosity and creates a gradual buildup that satisfies the readers as each truth comes to light. Yet, despite that Quail takes time in revealing the mystery, it never goes dull. It pertains to a pace that is fast and dynamic enough to keep the attention of the readers.

One of the most curious things is the implementation of necromancy in the book, or at least a few elements that are associated with the concept, to the narrative. It's not often to see this notion written in a fantasy book, despite that they bring up an afterworld and death lords as part of the key story; most settle in referencing the concept or sometimes treating the practice as a taboo or myth. Here in Shadow Rose, while the Lady of Darkness herself insists that there's no power to bring the dead in full flesh, it is visibly shown that necromancy could happen—there's a force that has the power to fulfill the method, although the price is more terrifying than one could assume.

As a result, it's interesting to see how it would affect the balance that Maeva and her company believe to have been restored by returning the missing daughters to the rightful gods. Quail succeeds in teasing her audience of hidden powers that might be much more powerful than the current gods, inviting a dreadful anticipation of going against an archenemy that not even the cosmos himself is familiar with.

The main characters of Shadow Rose have one of the better chemistry in a trio I've seen in a fantasy book. Maeva checks the mark as the protagonist with an alienated background: born as a daughter of a demon and a human, abandoned by her human parents for her nature as a halfling, then discovering that her uncanny lineage comes from a quite powerful place with an eerie prophecy tailing her. However, in some parts of her characterization, she also checks the mark as a protagonist who could fall into the tag of an unlikable character; she's hotheaded, smart, but prone to being impulsive and brash, and basically a 'casanova' whose ex-girlfriends could be found everywhere—this unlikability turns her into a reluctant heroine, a fascinating one with a magnetic charm that pulls the readers in to feel with her.

In return, Ophelia is the perfect opposite of Maeva's spirited characterization. She is soft and quite the mousy personality, a little skittish due to the implied child abuse that she has to endure at the hands of her father, despite her status as supposedly the royal princess—the gem of the empire, if we go by royalty standards. However, Quail doesn't let the timid attitude overshadow Ophelia's determination. As proven in many parts of the narrative where she could argue when she thinks she needs to, using her brain for alternative routes when Maeva decides to act rashly. Most of all, Ophelia's character development is the brightest in the novel; she grows to be more assertive and thoughtful, demonstrating her potential as the royal princess of Elecara and the inferno daughter of the country's deities.

It is why the relationship dynamic between Maeva and Ophelia is visibly steamy; the polar opposite characterization imbued to their personality creates such romantic tension that readers could see to be a thing that has lasted between them for a very long time. It's a build-up that readers have anticipated and counted down until the main characters hit off, which Quail does not disappoint when she finally has them lower their pride and confess their feelings in as many ways they could find. And yet, Quail does not deem their blooming romance as the instant 'love conquers all' resolution to their problems. She illustrates the upside-down of a first serious relationship between two people—the rocky beginning as Maeva and Ophelia navigate their understanding of each other, especially when they are presented with the fact that there is a huge gap between their respective class status.

While the chemistry works wonders as a team, Kiel and Roisin don't leave much impression as individuals. Kiel has his moments that let him shine and explain his backstory, but they're so small and overshadowed by scenes that portray him as simply the comic reliever—there's nothing wrong with being the comic relief, but I would like to see him more in action. On the other hand, despite that Roisin is being written to provide help with her godly power and the centuries-old knowledge of the country, she is ironically still the damsel of the group. It is similar to how Lady of Darkness is portrayed in the book; she spends her time contemplating the possibilities of her escape, but there's no attempt, which also drags her into an identical damsel position as her daughter.

I wasn't particularly impressed with the last act of the Shadow Rose. The introduction of the secondary antagonist feels out of nowhere despite the foreshadowing from other characters in the previous chapters of the book, and the king's death feels too quick and does not leave a gritty impression of the antagonist's sadistic streak that Quail presumably aims to write. I would've preferred to have Lucien, Ophelia's adopted younger brother, who mysteriously comes back from the dead and acts deranged, takes control of the king instead of simply killing him, while his puppet mistress moves the chess pieces subtly through Lucien.

Overall, I believe that Shadow Rose is still a stunning debut from an indie author. The narrative feels alive and gripping, showing how Quail learns from all the fantasy book readings that she has acquired for years while leaving her unique imprint on her own story. I can't wait to read the sequel of this book and see how Maeva and Ophelia survive the final battle.

Thank you to MTMC Tours and the author for providing a free e-copy of Shadow Rose in exchange for an honest review. The first book in the Daughters of Moon and Sun duology is a standout new adult fantasy featuring exquisite detail and ample diverse representation.

The story is told from two perspectives—The Goddess of the Moon and mortal, Maeva “Mae” of Elecara. The push and pull between the distinct POVs allows readers to fully immerse themselves in the unique lore regarding the Sun, Moon, and Afterworld. The Goddess is determined despite her confines, ready to do anything to reunite with her family. Mae is a brash, brazen girl prone to profanity. Despite her initial skepticism at the state of affairs, she joins friends Ophelia and Kiel on a journey to fulfill an age old prophecy.

Along the way, there’s spellbinding, swoon worthy romance. Parental relationships and platonic relationships are also explored in this book. By the end, readers will be left with a range of emotions—and I mean this in the best way. Some plot points are perfectly tied up, but there is endless foreshadowing suggesting so much more to come in book two. Expect the unexpected and prepare yourself for an exciting, refreshing sapphic fantasy.

So I realized quickly into this book that fantasy is NOT my genre, so applaud my effort (holds for applause) … I did make sure to finish this book because I’m no quitter.

(Funny would it be if I quit the review right here? 😂)

Okay, be serious now…

So I enjoyed this plot and the concept of Ophelia and Maeva. The Lady of Darkness plot was the most interesting to me throughout because it was peppered through the story between chapters and I was eager to know when it was all going to culminate.

The protagonists were a fun little squad of characters that were mostly light-hearted with their banter and my favorites were Kiel and Orion. (Yes, my favorite was the bird, because predatory birds with sassy personalities are the best.) Kiel was funny and unimposing and I may have identified with him the most.

The story offers a lot of adventure and fun for sure. I think if fantasy and romance are your thing then this is one worth checking out and I would recommend if you told me you were a fan of fantasy.

Where I am not a fantasy fan, I started connecting dots that say more about me as a consumer than it does about this body of work. I felt about this book the same I did while watching Lord of the Rings or Game of Thrones. Sure, those are fine films but I was lost quickly and honestly a little overwhelmed with the information being fed to me and how many characters with fantastical names and the world building that comes fast. I struggled to keep track of who was who and what was what and found myself frequently thinking to myself “oh yeah, that’s who the goddess is, give me more bird!”

I can respect how much went into this novel and world and totally see it being something people love and a follow up book will be needed for this adventure.

Great job with this world you’ve created Elsie!

Ma'am! I'm speaking to Elsie. This story was incredible! When I first bought it, I thought to myself "Great another fantasy book (not my typical genre). I am always going to support Indie authors first though, so I took a chance.

You legit blew me away. I can't think of another story that is this genuine. The journey these characters take to figure out who they are and where they belong, is relatable in so many ways. The care that you gave to your characters and the scene development is clearly seen within your writing. The emotion you feel from this story, with these characters is so impactful. I'm really excited to see future books from Elsie.

I really enjoyed this book. You get to the good stuff really quickly, so there's not a lot of fluff you have to dig through in the beginning. I really appreciated that because I really wanted a lot of action out of this book. And it's full of it. I also really enjoyed the characters and the humor that is effortlessly infused throughout the interactions between everyone.

There's also a character towards the end, and a specific scene, that really just shows how well Elsie can describe a scene. While she does this throughout the book, this one scene really got to me. I imagined being in that room and reacting how many of the people do (I can't share too much more or things will be given away!).

Overall, I really enjoyed this book and give it ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️. There are a few grammatical errors, but they did not dissuade me from fully enjoying this book. I highly suggest it if you're looking for a new fantasy read!

I’m excited to participate in the Creative Tour for Shadow Rose hosted by @mtmctours! Thank you for sending this book in exchange for an honest review.

I’m incredibly disappointed. I wanted to like this book so much. Sapphic fantasy about goddess and prophecies? Love. But it was so unreadable. The dialogue was so awkward and long, every bit of dialogue from the main character was a paragraph long. They’re trying to explain what is happening to the main character but she just interrupts them with long speeches each time. It was so off putting. I had to give up 25% in.

I definitely think the author has potential and I’d love to see what they come up with in the future.

I had the amazing opportunity to be an ARC reader for Shadow Rose, and let me tell you! I’ve never been much of a fantasy reader, this book may have changed my mind.

I have fallen in love with all of the characters. Maeva, Kiel and Ophelia. Oh, and I can’t forget to mention Maeva’s trusty companion Orion!

If you’re into fantasy, adventure, romance and family…then this is the book for you! There was just the right amount of love, friendship and action.

Thank you Elsie! Can’t wait for your next one!

I loved this story. The Daemons seemed so real with descriptive world building. I felt a good connection with the main characters, except Kiel, who could be a pain in the ass, but…we all have that one friend…🤣

The journey to the Afterworld left me chilled from all the creepy encounters. The book picked up a good pace toward the ending, unveiling the answers to my questions at a perfect speed to keep me turning the pages! This was my first novel with a LGBTQ love story and i LOVED it!

This is definitely a read for all Fantasy Romance readers, just keep in mind this is a FF story.

I really liked that the author took me to a whole new world, one that I thought I knew about and how it all work out, but I didn’t have a clue at all.

I’m still deciding if Kiel is one of those friends, you know…. that one that’s annoying to not end but at the same time one that you can always count on?!!! Who am I kidding…. I want a friend like Kiel….. or not…. 🤣🤣

Can’t wait for the next part!!!!

I received an ARC of this story and this is my voluntary review.

What a fantastic read! I cannot tell you how excited I was to dive into this fantasy world known as Elecara. Maeve, Ophelia, and Kiel are some of the main characters you will fall in love along the way.

One of the main things I enjoyed about this debut novel were the vivid details Quail writes both of the fantasy world and characters. Shadow Rose is a beautifully written novel with full fledged characters, a plot to die for, and anticipation for book two!

Thank you to Elsie Quail for the ARC! All thoughts are my own.

I have been disconnected from Fantasy for awhile, but this book so easily made me fall in love with it. this mainly has two pov's - lady of darkness and maeva. the world building kept me hooked, and it didn't like get boring. there was something going on and kept my interest. the creatures mentioned in the story were super cool, and woah! this one wasn't fast paced, but not too slow either. i so look forward for the next book in the series!!

Welcome to the world of Elecara! One thing that stands out to me in Shadow Rose is the incredible amount of world-building which is understandable as it’s the first book and a lot has to be set down and context provided. When you get past that it’s a story about enduring friendships, loyalty and amazing lore. Pick this one up if you want fantasy and adventure and to get lost in a completely different world!

I’m in a group chat with Elsie and she is very kind. I enjoyed this work of hers. It was a great fantasy story with friends who are actually more like family and they suffer their loves and losses together while on a quest to the Afterworld to return the daughter of shadows to the sun god and moon goddess. While i enjoyed this book a lot, the journey to the afterworld seemed very short and easy for the group, i figured it would have been a very long and treacherous journey and getting into the actual afterworld would have been kind of harder since most of the group was actually living and mortal. But they did face some danger along the way. Overall a great read and I can’t wait to read more to this story because there is definitely more danger coming to them.

This is one of the best fantasy books I have read! The world building was done in such a way that it was easy to follow and it didn’t feel like an info-dump, which can sometimes be a problem with the fantasy genre. It was fun to have the world slowly introduced and revealed as the characters travelled. I enjoyed Maeva, Ophelia, and Róisín. I wish we saw more of Kiel’s relationships with the others, but he did provide some good comedic relief. Orion was wonderful. I am looking forward to seeing where the story goes.

DNF.

This is the most dull, vapid writing I have ever been exposed to. I made it through 50% of the book and finally admitted defeat (not my normal MO) because I just didn't want to read anymore. None of the events that should hold weight or mean anything do because the moments are glossed over and rushed. There's no character development or depth, and frankly I don't like any of the characters. It did not get any less predictable or dull as I kept reading and the final straw was:

"sure, she had to stab a couple people but it's not like that was hard".

First of all, I really loved Ri’s character! He’s so brave, funny, and full of surprises. We all deserve a magical bird in our lives. Second of all, the message of love and loyalty among friends carries forth throughout. Finding safe places and people within them can literally save lives, so I love positive stories about found family. And lastly, the romantic relationship between Mae and Ophelia is so tender. It reads like the best of first loves with such awareness and compassion for one another. The heat between them feels genuine.

Shadow Rose was a really fun read. Even though I was surprised by the ease of the group’s journey from the living realm to the underworld and back, the unexpected twists throughout kept things interesting. I finished it quickly and still have SO many questions about what happens next. I can’t wait to pick up the eventual sequel!

"To everyone who is still trying to find their place"

Well, lines like this make so much sense right. This is how Shadow Rose starts. Written by Elsie Quail, Shadow Rose is a fantasy adventure involving Maeva, Ophelia, Roisin, Kiel, The Sun Prince and the Goddess of the Moon with Balo and Lucien as the antagonists.

Taking place in a fictional town of Elecara, Ophelia is the daughter of King Balo who has lost her brother Lucien to Hell Water, which had also drove her father crazy. Crazy enough to kidnap the Moon Goddess and her daughter Roisin. Maeva, Ophelia's closest friend and a Cambion, a half human and half Daemon, is dragged into an unwilling quest along with her friend Kiel and her pet Orion, when Ophelia rescues Roisin from the bounds.

The Sun Prince and the Moon Goddess were considered Gods, but no mortal or Daemon or Cambion knew of their kids, godlings, the Goddesses of Shadow and Flame. No one knew that there existed 2 girls who were the offsprings of the Lady of Darkness and the Lord of Light. The quest takes them to several places, they face several challenges, many secrets are revealed and love blossoms between people.

"...she was the only person who occupied her thoughts. The only person she wanted to spend her life with. To see her every morning, not just tomorrow."

I loved the romance between Mae and Lia... especially the way the slow burn romance started with confessions, dilemma, and then the love. Perfectly written, perfectly portrayed.

The rest of the story sets on how the group rescue the Lady of Darkness. If Roisin is one godling who is the other, where is the other, where is the Sun Prince. Read the book to know about it.

To speak about the book, the setting the plot has been beautifully written. The plot development, twists and the romantic touch and the adventurous quests have been taken in a smooth and fascinating way. Detailed at places where required, and maintaining a balance between the non conversation text and the conversations, this book truly deserves a 5 star. I would gladly tell that this book is one of the best fantasies I have read. The conclusion, the leaving out of plot for the next book, all of this is on point. Overall, I Loved it. It does have a bit of adult content, but I would recommend all adults to read it.

A word about the Author : Elsie Quail, a Canadian Indie Author, is not just an amazing friend but also one of the most amazing writers. Shadow Rose is the First Book in the Daughters of the Sun and Moon Duology, and she has done the most amazing job an author can do: keep the reader entertained from the start to end, and that is truly appreciable.
