Sloane Monroe Stories - Mystery Novella Series (with characters from the main series)
The Broken Soul is book three in the Sloane and Maddie, Peril Awaits series, and I loved it so much. It's a quick, easy read that I binged in one sitting because I needed to know what happened. It's fast paced and one that will keep you on the edge of you seat. Maddie and Sloane are back at it, and this time we find ourselves in New Orleans for Mari Gras. When Sloane slips away to go grab drinks for the two of them, she comes back to find that Maddie is gone. Upon further investigation, she learns that Maddie went to help with a girl that she saw face down in an alley. Now, Sloane is left with a lot of questions of her own, and racing against the clock to find Maddie and make sure that she is ok. This can be read as a standalone, but I would recommend reading them all in order because they are really good and I promise you will love them.
"A streak of movement came from a dumpster, and she stopped, whirling around. A needle pierced her neck, and she felt her arms being locked behind her back. She screamed for help but was dragged farther down the alley. An old sedan of some sort was waiting, and she was shoved into the back."
Book three in the Sloane and Maddie series. Like the first two books in the series, Sloane and Maddie are off on vacation, but once again find themselves in the middle of a dangerous situation. Maddie has been kidnapped, and Sloane is determined to find her friend, even if it kills her. Another fast-paced story filled with mystery. I can't wait to read the next book.
Stilted writing, too many coincidences, too easy of a wrap up. Thank goodness it was short and didn’t waste my time. Also, calling Mardi Gras a festival is egregious and makes me think the author doesn’t know anything about the city.
This saga honestly keeps getting better. As the story progresses onto a new book the writing and the characters only get better. This new adventure takes us to New Orleans in times of carnaval. This time the pair of friends is in trouble. For when Maddie follows her instincts and tries to help a woman finds herself being kidnapped. With this we see the more real Sloan we’ve ever encountered. This book takes everything to a new limit. This time everything feels more personal, less calculated. As Sloan investigates her mind goes all over the place. The narration captures this amazingly. The plot moves as she does, moved by the character. Her desperation makes this book more intense. This new mystery is by far better than the ones before. Takes us to a more deep and dark side of everything. One again a great book for all fans of mystery and detective tales.
This is a quick-ish mystery featuring the semi-retired private investigator Sloane and her best friend and retired Medical Examiner Maddie. They are on their annual girls trip. This time it's New Orleans for the Mardi Gras celebrations. Unfortunately, in the busy streets filled with partiers, Maddie goes missing. The p0lice think drugs may be involved, but Sloane knows her friend and knows that is out of the question. With a little luck, and help from some unexpected sources, Sloane gets closer to finding her friend. This is a pretty fast paced story. No sexual content, but there is some talk about drugs and the nitty gritty drug scene. While the majority of the book is from Sloane's POV, there are several chapters taken from Maddie's. While investigating the main mystery, a couple other side mysteries come about as well. I've always loved Sloane's character, but I will admit, she came across different. Can't quite put my finger on it. Less confident maybe. It seemed that she depended on other people more than she has in the past. Of course, she was not on her home turf, so that may be why. Anyways, overall an enjoyable mystery that wasn't too convoluted or confusing, yet not that simple either.
This is the first time I’m reading anything by Cheryl Bradshaw and Janet Fix and it won’t be the last. These two authors have teamed up to write a story that is chock full of mystery, drugs, survival, and lifelong friendships.
So, let’s meet Sloane, a private investigator and Maddie, a retired medical examiner. Two best friends who are on vacation during the festival season (Mardi Gras) in New Orleans. A place of fun, food, and seedy places. While waiting on Sloane to return with a Canal Street Daisy, a bourbon-based drink infused with orange and lemon, Maddie takes off to see what a couple was doing down a dark alleyway. Within a few minutes of checking on the young woman she found lying on the filthy ground, someone from behind a dumpster pierces her neck with a needle and she is shoved into the back of an old sedan.
Panic ensues when Sloane returns, and Maddie is nowhere to be found. Sloane asks around and is pointed in the direction of the alleyway where she finds the young woman still lying on the ground, Maddie’s phone, signs of a struggle, and a freshly used syringe. She dials 9-1-1 to get the woman some help. Later the woman is identified as a college student who died from an overdose. And this kicks off Sloane’s investigation to solve this mystery puzzle and find her friend.
Overall, this was a quick read. I loved the mystery, pacing of the story, the dialogue, the descriptions, and Sloane’s investigative instincts. I also enjoyed reading about the secrets being kept by some of the other characters. So, here’s to reading another story in the series. Two thumbs up!
Some of my favorite lines:
He nodded. “Yup, yup. I seen her,” he said, pointing across the way. “Ran over there.” “How long ago?” “Not long. Twenty, thirty minutes ago, I guess. I was curious about it, so I tried to keep an eye out.” “Curious about what?” “D’way she darted across the street like dat. Looked upset.” “Where did she go after that?” He shrugged. “Dunno. I watched her for a minute, and then the floats and stuff got in da way. Next time I looked, she’s gone.” He spoke with the Yat dialect that was so common to the area—a local. I found it charming and challenging to understand at the same time. “Gone,” I repeated, looking in the direction he was pointing. Sure enough, no Maddie.
The Broken Soul is the 3rd in the Sloane Monroe mystery series. The books in this series can be read as stand alones. I definitely recommend reading all of them, though. Sloane and her friend Maddie are on a road trip together. Each book is set in the current city they are visiting. Other than that they are friends on a road trip, you certainly don't need the back story from the previous book, however, it has been really fun to follow their adventure, even though they never really get much of a vacation. They always seem to find themselves caught up in some sort of mystery. In The Broken Soul, Sloane and Maddie are in New Orleans when Maddie disappears. Sloane will do anything to find her.
The Sloane Monroe series are quick reads at around 200 pages. They are really fast-paced, so perfect if you are looking for a quick, interesting read. In The Broken Soul, there was a number of things happening besides Maddie being taken. There was the suspiciously private matron of a home for those down on their luck, there was the mystery of the girl found dead in the alley, they mystery Sloane's neighbour appears to be trying to solve, and of course Maddie's disappearance. All of these things intersected in different ways and ended up coming together in the end really nicely.
And as always, I absolutely love the friendship between Sloane and Maddie and the fierceness for which they try to protect each other and others. Sloanes husband makes an entrance in this book towards the end, and I am enjoying his character too. He is respectful of Sloane and Maddie's desire for a road trip and gives Sloane the space she needs to solve the mysteries and knows exactly when he is needed. I just love a book that portrays some really healthy relationships.
he Broken Soul by Cheryl Bradshaw and Janet Fix is available now in eBook and Physical Book ⭐️⭐️⭐⭐⭐ Book Review
Maddie and Sloan are at it again! They have waited a long six months for their next adventure, this time to New Orleans for Mardi Gras. Sloane slips away for thirty minutes tops to retrieve some drinks for the two girls. When she returns she finds Maddie nowhere in sight. Utilizing her investigation skills she determines that Maddie attempted to go to the rescue of a girl who was face down in an alley and vanished. Who could have taken her and why? Sloane will go to all lengths to get her best friend back safely.
The Broken Soul is installment three of the Sloane & Maddie, Peril Awaits series. It is part of a series but can be read as a standalone with minimal reference to previous installments. The friendship between these two girls is very evident in this novel. Sloane will do anything to keep Maddie from harm no matter the cost to herself. Bradshaw and Fix do an amazing job referencing the Fentanyl issue in America. This can be a hard topic for many but the facts are well laid out allowing the reader to understand what kind of effects this has on the people. This novel is fast paced, action packed, and suspenseful from the very beginning. Be prepared to read all 180 pages in one sitting because you won’t want to put this one down. I'm on my way to pick up Widow Maker. I can’t wait to see what Maddie and Sloane have up their sleeve next.
"Because that’s what friends did for each other: supported, encouraged, and made dreams come true."

My thoughts: I was so confused thinking this is the first book in this series that didn't start with an outline of the horrible event that consumes the entire book.... and I was so wrong! I gasped when Maddie is the horrible event that takes this book for a loop! Oh no! What will Sloane do without her trusty side kick? She's a little cringey without Maddie keeping her in line, but no one is going to get in the way of her finding her friend! I really enjoyed this one! It has the same great writing style as the others and it was great to see how the characters handled it when it was one of them in trouble.
Here we are back for the third instalment of the Sloane & Maddie - Peril Awaits series Cheryl & Janet have once again created a fantastic read.
This time it is more than personal. When Mardi Gras turns deadly and a suspicious dumping gets the attention of one of the much loved duo you know shit is about to get real... Even more so for Maddie & Slone. (seriously girls at this point it may be safer sipping margaritas in the comfort of your own home) Make sure your comfy and can dedicate time to the read as you will most definitely not want to put it down i literally devoured it in one sitting yet again!! Fast paced and action packed from the start despite it being only 200 pages long you definitely feel the story has such a depth and is not rushed in the slightest. Twists and turns and surprise outcomes are the name of the game for Bradshaw & Fix I love how dark some of the aspects of the story were and yet i didn't feel like i had dived head first into the cartels daily dealings.
This book can be read as a standalone for sure but you most definitely should not deprive yourself of the enjoyment of the previous books.
I cannot wait to read more from both Cheryl and Janet!
Thanks once again to @katieandbreypa @janet.fix and @cherylbradshawbooks for the chance to ARC read these stories.
"The Broken Soul" by Cheryl Bradshaw appears to be a fast-paced mystery novel filled with suspense and danger. The story revolves around Maddie LaFoe, a retired medical examiner, and her best friend Sloane Monroe, a private investigator, as they embark on a trip to New Orleans to celebrate Mardi Gras. However, things take a sinister turn when Maddie witnesses what appears to be a body being dumped in an alleyway and later becomes a victim herself.
The blurb sets up a compelling premise for the book, with the lines between friend and foe becoming blurred, and drugs becoming weapons. The idea of a party turning into a deadly event creates a sense of intrigue and excitement, and the disappearance of Maddie adds a personal element to the story that will no doubt drive the plot forward.
Overall, "The Broken Soul" sounds like an intense and gripping read that will keep readers on the edge of their seats as Sloane embarks on a personal investigation to find her missing friend. I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys fast-paced mysteries with a hint of danger and a personal touch.
Thank you to @katieandbreypa @janet.fix and @cherylbradshawbooks for a digital copy of The Broken Soul, the third book in the Sloane and Maddie Peril Awaits spin-off series.
While at a festival in New Orleans, Maddie sees something disturbing and tries to help. She's too late to help the girl in need, but she's able to run after the culprit until someone stops her and throws her into a van. Once Sloane realizes that Maddie is gone, there is nothing that can stop her from throwing herself fully into the investigation of her best friend's disappearance.
In the fashion that we've come to know, Sloane will stop at nothing to find Maddie and whoever murdered Michelle. Of course, the local detective isn't too happy about it, but Sloane has never been one to defer to the locals when it comes to a case...and this one couldn't be more personal. Where did Maddie go? Who took her? Why? Time is of the essence and Sloane is not one for waiting around for things to happen.
All in all, a quick mystery focusing on loyalty, love, and supporting each other.
I’m back with the third installment of the Sloane and Maddie: Peril Awaits spinoff mystery series!
Sloane and Maddie decide after last two failed girls vacations, they would just meet back up at Marti Gras. Sloane has a place in NOLA, what could go wrong this time? As Sloane goes to grab drinks at the celebration, Maddie witnesses a body being dragged into the alleyway. Maddie goes to help the girl and finds herself becoming a victim and being kidnapped. When Sloane returns, she can’t find her friend and only one person saw where Maddie went into the dark alleyway. It’s up to Sloane to solve this case and find her friend before its too late.
This was probably my favorite of the whole series. I liked the suspense of one of our main characters being in danger while leaving the other to work with new people to solve the case. This one had some good twists that I did not see coming. I am so glad that I have been introduced to this series and I cannot wait to read more! These are great, light mysteries that are fast paced and easy to read!
The Broken Soul - Book 3 by Cheryl Bradshaw and Janet Fix
📚Honest Review📚
This is the third book of the Sloane and Maddie series and you won’t be disappointed!
Sloane and Maddie enjoy Mardi Gras in New Orleans this time and take the reader on a virtual tour through an amazing and exhilarating experience! Mardi Gras is certainly an amazing celebration!
While enjoying themselves, Maddie sees something strange and sprints to a dark alley where unfortunately she will be put to the test.
After Maddie goes missing, Sloane begins a journey to find Maddie. Throughout this journey, she will count on Henry to help her, support her and comfort her while the search seems barren.
I loved how characters developed and how the authors built their narrative around Maddie’s disappearance while including drug use and drug trade.
I don’t mean to spoil, but I love the idea of Henry helping Broken Souls ♥️
Another fascinating book in a great series. One of the things on Maddie’s bucket list is to go to Mardi Gras. Sloane owns a condo there, so they set off on another vacation. While watching one of the parades, Sloane leaves Maddie to get them some drinks. While waiting, Maddie sees a woman being dragged into any alley. Thinking she can help, she finds a break in the parade to get to the woman. Sloane comes back and Maddie is gone. She checks the area, but Maddie is nowhere to be found. She does find someone who tells her that Maddie had gone in the direction of the alley. When she goes to investigate, she finds the body of a dead young woman and Maddie is nowhere to be found. A good mystery to the end with lots of twists and turns. I enjoyed it very much.
Sloane and Maddie are at the Marci Gras parade in New Orleans 6 months after their ordeal in Savannah, Georgia. During the parade is when Sloane’s worst nightmare presents itself. Maddie has gone missing and in the place where she was last seen, a woman’s body. Sloane is determined to find out what happened to the woman and where her best friend disappeared to.
I loved this book even more than the first two. Something about Sloane’s dedication to her friend Maddie and needing to find her at any cost had me by the heart strings. Also Henry is just the cutest fill in side kick. Sloane puts herself in such risky situations in this book that I just couldn’t put it down.
I have thoroughly enjoyed reading this series. This is Book 3 of the Sloane Monroe Mystery series and it is my favorite so far. This book keeps the suspense throughout the book and keeps you engaged through the end. The topics of friendship and what you will do to help your friend resonate among most and is of utmost prevalence throughout this story. I love the connection between Sloane and Maddie and you can see how dear their friendship is in this book. This book also highlights the heartbreaking consequences of drug use and, in particular, fentanyl in the US right now. The authors handle current societal crises in their books and raise awareness that is needed which I respect and appreciate. I can’t wait to read Book 4, The Widow Maker!
In the third book of the Sloane and Maddie, Peril Awaits series, the pair find themselves in even more danger than before. After the last 2 adventures the girls are just looking to enjoy Mardi Gras.
When Maddie tries to help a girl in trouble, she gets more than she bargained for. Maddie ends up kidnapped. Can Sloane find her before it's too late? ---- These 2 can't stay out of trouble and it seems to get worse every time. With Maddie in trouble Sloane has to keep her cool to try to find her.
It's interesting to see Sloane's process and how she manages without Maddie, and how much she depends on her.
It will be interesting to see what they get into next. Hopefully not worse than this time around.
Author Cheryl Bradshaw has corroborated with Janet Fix which makes for a marvelous read. This book was full of twists and turns as Sloane's friend Maddie gets abducted during Mardi Gras while on vacation with Sloane. As Sloane searches for her friend, she becomes aware of the huge drug scene not just in New Orleans, but everywhere as the drug manufacturers and dealers are lacing drugs with fentanyl which now is becoming a huge concern for all. Many of these "copycat" drugs look like the real medication but are not. Help comes to Sloane from her neighbor at the condo where she lives but seems to have a mystery of his own. A very good read, as are all of Cheryl's books.
The authors have done it again with this fantastic must-read in the Sloan and Maddie, Peril Awaits series. I started the book on a flight and couldn’t put it down. The setting comes alive from the first page and the character’s deep friendship tugs at the heartstrings. Action-packed and full of twists and turns, the story packs a big punch as far as relevance too touching on the current fentanyl issue in America. My only advice, make sure you have plenty of time to binge read…I had to wait for my return flight to finish the book, and I couldn’t stop thinking about it my whole trip. Bravo to the authors. I can’t wait for the next in this series.
Who doesn't want to enjoy a little parade or festive event? The turn in this story was interesting and touching. Here you get to see the true connection of friendship at play and what it meant to go all out to save that friend. Another vacation, another dramatic experience. It seems no matter where they went they couldn't escape the job they'd claimed to leave behind, or slightly retired from. This story was captivating from start to end, and had me guessing at who did it. It was worth the read. Def. Rec.
I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
In this book Maddie and Sloane are at the Madi Gras when Sloane goes to get them some drinks and she comes back to find Maddie has disappeared and is nowhere to be found. Maddie while waiting for Sloane had seen a woman in distress and of course she had to go see if she could help but it looks like she also should have been a bit more concerned about her own safety because she is taken. I found this to be the most suspenseful book of the series, I think because it involves Maddie and Sloane personally. With all the tension and twists and turns I love. I'm now off to read the next book to find out what Maddie and Sloane get into next.
Sloane and Maddie try vacationing again, this time to a place Maddie had always wanted to go to, New Orleans during Mardi Gras. While Sloane is away, Maddie witnesses someone who needs help in an alley. When she discovers she is too late to help she tries to go after the person running from the scene only to be drugged kidnapped. Sloane now has to do what she does best, find her best friend with the help of her neighbor in New Orleans. As with all of Cheryl Bradshaw's book there are many twists and turns.
Maddie and Sloane are in New Orleans enjoying the parades, food, and drinks. Sloane goes to get more drinks and when she returns Maddie is gone! She luckily finds someone who saw her go in an alley but all she finds there is a dead body and her phone. What happened to Maddie? Why did she go in the alley? How will Sloane find her in all the partying going on? A very intense story indeed. I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book.
I absolutely love this series! I am a big fan of Sloane and Maddie. Them visiting my home city and coming to a Mardi Gras parade is just icing on the cake. Maddie witness 's a woman in trouble and goes to her aid getting kidnapped and leaving Sloane to find her and discover why a woman is dead. In this book you meet Henry , Sloane's neighbor who has a secret of his own. This book has so much mystery and twists and turns it is so good. Once you start reading you cannot put it down.
This is a quick read mystery featuring Sloane and Maddie. I loved that this one took place in New Orleans. There were a couple of surprises. I wish it had been a little longer, there's a lot happening here and it felt a little rushed. Overall I really enjoyed it and look forward to their next adventure.
This was a great mystery to read!! I was captivated right off the back! I enjoyed the many new characters, and how the connections came together! When Maddie gets mixed up in the mystery mess, Sloane feels the pressure to solve another murder, hoping to help her friend. Mardi Gras, Drugs, Secrets, and sadness.
