Aspen and Charm meet again, and Aspen dreams of finally having a quiet moment to explore what they mean to each other. Can a wandering swordswoman and an actress with a penchant for picking pockets have the lasting connection Aspen longs for? Would Charm even want that?
With old enemies still chasing them and new problems cropping up at every turn, Aspen worries that she’s dragging Charm into her unpredictable and dangerous life. If Charm gets hurt, she’ll never forgive herself.
But as she and Charm rescue a winged orphan, journey across the continent, and navigate their way through a series of magical trials, Charm proves herself clever, resilient, fearless—and devoted to Aspen. They both want to fight for a future together, but first they’ll have to survive the day.
Errant, Volume Two is a collection of two sapphic fantasy novellas, meant to be read in sequence, of approximately 60,000 words.
L.K. Fleet is the pen name for the trio of authors K.R. Collins, Felicia Davin, and Valentine Wheeler. They are longtime friends who share a love of fantasy settings and romance tropes. Errant, a series of sapphic fantasy novellas, is the first thing they have written together.
Lots more adventures on the road in this world, with MC's Aspen and Charm, as both slowly get to know more details about one another.
However the push-pull and ignoring of feelings and emotions became quite tedious and annoying in this installment. They ultimately live together for a season, pining for each other but not saying anything. It was frustrating as heck.
What made it even more so, was seeing Aspen back with an old lover and their ease and flirtation, despite nothing more happening - offers were made and of course our Aspen declined - but the whole thing just made me uncomfortable.
In the end we have a bizarre and ludicrous storyline, and some 'challenges' that help the two connect and reveal their feelings, however it felt all too little, too late. There's only so long you can read about two people tip-toeing around eachother is such obvious and stupid ways, before you wonder why you're invested. Especially when a stupid, lazy storyline has to make them acknowledge it.
Despite my negativity, I did genuinely enjoy the story, I just wish we could have made some headway, and that the couple could have opened up without a plot device. The plot device simply pissed me off.
I will read the 3rd, but I'mma be honest. If nothing further happens in that installment, I will give up. You can't string this stuff along for too long, before your audience gets tired and the magic that was there becomes eked out and no longer magical.
Volume 2 is a solid addition to the series! Aspen and Charm still dance around their feelings, but there is definitely progress. I felt like Vol 2 was more cohesive than Vol 1, perhaps as the authors find their stride of writing together.
It was great to see more of the world, and find out more about both backstories. I really enjoyed the tests at the end, with their LITERAL forced proximity (LOL) and seeing Charm and Aspen work together. (I enjoyed them enough that I'll forgive that Charm and Aspen really quickly, and with very little evidence, decided that they must be tests.)
I do love a book with insights into human character. Even when it's something I already know, I like to see it expressed cleverly. Here are some of my favorites:
"Aspen knew the difference between a lie that caused harm and one that prevented it." "He knew her well enough to offer comfort, and she trusted him enough to accept it."
I'm looking forward to Volume 3!
I got an ARC from the author in exchange for an honest review.
This continued from the first volume in the same vain, where Charm was a delightful flirt and Aspen was fantastically stoic, and the gorgeous tension between the two of them increased and increased.
There were so many excellent adventures, with the Sky people a great favourite, especially due to its thoughtful look at politics and trade.
The absolute best moment for me though near the end...and I cannot spoil it but it made me very very happy!
I'm really looking forward to the last novella and seeing how it will all come together in the end.
*I received a free ARC and I have chosen to leave a review*
This reads like the shenanigans of a sapphic D&D party of two. A bit disjointed, slightly over the top, and exactly my kind of comfort read - prolonged mutual pining included.
I received an ARC from one of the authors and am voluntarily posting a review. All opinions are my own. Errant, Volume Two is a wonderful continuation of the adventures of the quirky, wonderful Charm and Aspen. With a greater sense of the environs surrounding them, I felt it was easier to become invested in the characters as they simultaneously dealt with personal issues and swashbuckling adventures. I love the deepening bond between Charm and Aspen, although it is complicated by their messy feelings. Aspen doesn’t want to keep dragging Charm into danger, while Charm is trying to prove her capabilities as Charm’s partner on all fronts. This is a lot of fun, and while I wasn’t sure how I felt about the episodic style of these, I actually really like them and how they gradually build the relationship between the two. If you’re looking for a whimsical, romantic sapphic fantasy, you should check these out.
"When she could, she glutted herself on the fine things in life. What did it say that she saw [her] as one of those fine things?"
"It wasn't magic keeping them together anymore. They were still holding hands. They often split up to see to their own interests, but they always ended up together again."
"[She] was the softness of the flowers and the strength of the sword."
"Being clever or logical—or brave and strong—didn't mean a person was in love. But [she] was. She couldn't lie to herself any longer."
"I've never fallen in love with anyone before and probably never will again. All I want is for you to kiss me on purpose, just because you want to."
I didn't think I could love these characters any more than I already did. I was wrong. Charm and Aspen are the fucking cutest and I couldn't help but literally cheer when the kiss FINALLY happened... only to immediately be undone by SOMEONE being convinced they didn't deserve happiness. NEXT BOOK NOW PLEASE.
MY HEART!! I am obsessed with this series and so incredibly sad for it to end. These characters and their slowly deepening relationship are so sweet and tender—and funny! This is such a wholesome story, and I wish to remain in this world with Aspen and Charm forever.
Editing my review because I can’t count and I thought this was the last novella. There is one more!
A lot of the first novella dragged quite a bit, with the interminable wait and excuses for Aspen to avoid giving in to Charm. I loved Charm’s backstory reveal though. Still great characters, interesting world building, and a place I would love to return to in a future book, perhaps about Aspen returning to her people or getting back her wood features?
