Rather than focusing on positivity, this book offers holistic and tested methods to enhance our thinking and combat dark thoughts. As a mental health counselor, the author has worked with many patients suffering from mental illnesses deriving from negative thinking. Add this read to your library if you want to improve and declutter your toxic thoughts.

Logical, Passionate, and Compassionate

Audiobook Review:
I've now read or listened to several books by this author, and I really enjoy them. He's able to break down popular self-help topics easily and logically, and this book is no exception. We've all heard discussion about how negative thoughts can be toxic to our mental and emotional well-being and can actually hold us back from being our best and living our best lives. In this no-holds-barred, no-punches-pulled book, the author addresses this with passion and compassion, providing insight and skills so that you can break through your negative mental barriers. The narrator of this audiobook is simply amazing. Far too often, nonfiction audiobook narrators sound like golfing sportscasters, nearly putting you to sleep with their droning voices. Not so in this book! The narrator sounds as passionate as the author seems to be, and I couldn't help but be caught up with his enthusiasm. It doesn't feel like you're just listening to a book. Rather, you feel as if you're at a high-energy presentation put on by a popular, sought-after self-help guru. The book's content and the narration are top-notch. There is only one thing I would improve. Audible offers authors the choice to include a PDF with the audiobook. At several junctures in this audiobook, I wished I had a visual of what was being said, like for the cognitive triangle. I'm a very visual person, and a simple graphic for that would have aided my understanding. In any event, though, this did not detract from the wonderfulness of this audiobook. If you struggle with negative thoughts or believe they hold you back, check out this audiobook. You will probably find it as helpful and delightful as I did.

useful and relevant

The part I liked the most was the authors Candor about negative thinking. Too often, people are so dedicated to thinking positive thoughts that they need to end up lying to themselves about the other ones.

It’s not that lying to yourself is always wrong, but there’s a difference between lying and self deception. And this particular author addresses that issue. A lot of time, people are so convinced the positive thinking is the be-all and end-all of success that they want to believe it more than they want to believe reality. It’s just a description of human nature, neither right nor wrong. I like that Cody acknowledges this and reassures people that it’s OK to feel negative feelings, as long as they know that they don’t have to act on them. And that there’s a difference between acting on them and just experiencing them. So many so-called life coaches out there make it sound like by denying negative feelings you’re empowering yourself to perform as you want. And it’s all bullsh*it.

Wonderful and impactful, if short, book of tools for retraining the brain for less negative reaction and reduction of anxiety. Our thoughts create our behaviors, which stem from what we believe about the world around us. As a businesswoman, I've experienced at a high level how negative thinking leads to greater stress and anxiety. Mindfulness is a great first start and lifelong practice but the tools in this book are about more precise change by challenging how we are wired as individuals. Many of the tools I recognized and have used to great results, but many were new to me. A literal full toolbox that everyone should have on their shelf and employ. The author wrote the book in a very approachable and casual manner, with great stories as examples to go along with the tools. Right up there with a few books on how to meditate, this book will be one I give out to others as an excellent source for how to affect real change in their lives. My only criticism is that the book felt too short. Not short in useful content but short in the reading experience, the stories and writing feel like it tapers off instead of reaching a climax towards the end. If you know about CBT and these tools then great but what isn't covered is some payoff to the reader that these tools do in fact work and work well. Enjoyed the read and a really great collection of tools for those suffering from anxiety and/or negative self-talk.

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
