Charl comes from a long line of farmers and has the scars to prove it. Abandoned by her brother and distracted by her handsome neighbor, it's up to Charl to keep the farm together without getting herself killed by the livestock.
After all, not just anyone can raise dragons.
But Charl’s brood consists of laying hens, not breeders. So when an egg unexpectedly hatches, she has a lot of questions. As does the Magical Regulation Squad who comes pounding at her door, ready to arrest Charl for breeding without a license.
Poised to lose everything—her dragons, her farm, and her freedom—Charl agrees to join the hunt for the illegal dragon who got her into this mess.
Yet probing too deep into the shadows will uncover more than just dragons and a debilitating fear of heights. For the man Charl loves has a secret that will turn her world upside down.
Featuring a delightful world where magic is as much a nuisance as a blessing, Hatched: Dragon farmer is the first installment of the clean romantic fantasy serial Hatched. Previously a Top Faved read on Amazon's Kindle Vella, this lighthearted slow burn romance is now available for the first time in ebook and print formats.
CAREN HAHN is an award-winning fantasy and suspense author best known for the Owl Creek, small town suspense series, and Hatched, a dragon adventure series. She discovered at a young age that the only thing more thrilling than reading fictional adventures was writing them herself, though it took the disruption from a global pandemic before she was driven to share her stories with the world.
Caren has a passion for writing intense stories without explicit content so they can be enjoyed by a wide audience. She lives with her family in the Pacific Northwest.
Coming in at under 200 pages this was a gorgeous little read. It had all the potential of being a 5 star read but due to it being shorter (which is actually also kind of refreshing don’t get me wrong) I wasn’t able to connect fully to the story or the characters. The rest of the series seems to have longer books though so I’m sure that when I continue that shift will absolutely happen and push the rating up. It packed a punch in those little pages that’s for sure! I loved it.
Set in a medieval fantasy world where dragons and humans coexist, sort of, Charl is a dragon farmer. In order to save the dragons, Charl's many-great-grandmother helped to domesticate dragons, and the world now has individuals who run farms where they collect the unfertilized eggs of their dragons. Charl's farm is one of those, and she had been running it with her older brother Roland since their father passed away two years ago. But Roland has been missing for months.
In this same world, there are also farms where dragons are bred, but dragon breeding is strictly regulated, and breeding dragons without a license is a very serious offense. So when Charl discovers a fertilized egg, she knows she's in trouble unless she can hide it. But when the Regs, officials in charge of enforcing the law, show up, Charl quickly realizes the situation is a lot worse than she realized.
Will Charl be able to hide the secret of the fertilized egg? Will she be arrested by the Regs and possibly put to death? You'll just have to read the book to find out. Okay, well, I'll go ahead and tell you one thing. She doesn't die. But you could probably figure that one out on your own since there's a book 2 after this one and authors tend not to kill off their main characters. But I'm not going to tell you HOW she doesn't die, because that's the best part of the story.
For a relatively short novel, some would say a novella, there was a lot happening in this story. Not only do we have the dragons to get to know - though we really only get to know two of them (and the biggest thing I learned is that you do NOT want to mess with Stella when she's broody) - along with the human characters, but there's quite a bit of history provided for some of the characters, and that history adds to the story in a wonderful way. The legacy left by Charl's many-great-grandmother, which has given Charl's life a purpose, but may have also limited her in some ways, was a great way to frame the story and, along with the information that Charl learns toward the end, really illustrates how family traditions and legacies can both help and hinder the children who grow up under them.
I do wish that Hahn would have explored why Charl's family was so mistrusted a bit more because I feel like there's more to it than them simply being dragon farmers, but I think we may get some of that in the next book. At least, I hope we do. With the reveal at the end, I am definitely looking forward to learning what happens next. Hopefully, we also learn what happened to Roland, though I suspect there's going to be a bit of mystery and intrigue there given the circumstances.
My only real complaint about this book is that it was too short. I would have loved to spend more time in this world and with these characters. To that end, I am definitely eager to read the sequel, and I especially want to learn more about Graegyn. I think you should read this book so you can join me in reading the sequel. I mean, really. What more reason do you need than dragons?
What if dragons could be raised like chickens? Caren Hahn grabs the (scaly, fire-breathing) question by its horns to spin a fun tale of friendship, lore, and redemption. Hatched: Dragon Farmer is a novella (the first in a series) centred on Charl (Charlotte), a young dragon farmer and direct descendant of Meirdan the Protector, the one who, domesticating the wild dragons, paved the way to their pacific coexistence with humans. Or did she? Charl’s certainties in herself and her family’s mission gradually crumble in the face of new revelations. Still reeling from the sudden disappearance of her brother Roland, our heroine finds herself in the most uncomfortable position of illegal breeder. One of her dragons’ eggs has inexplicably hatched, and Charl can only count on her new neighbour Praxton for help. And as the saying goes, troubles come in doubles. The very same day, an officer of the Magical Regulation Squad knocks on Charl’s door, with a trapper in tow. Rumour has it that her brother had illegally bought a dragon bull for mating…and they are there to find it and kill it. It is easy to understand why Hatched: Dragon Farmer was Top Fave read on Kindle Vella: the plot is fast-paced, the writing engaging (and typos-free, which is a boon), and the dialogues witty. Being a novella, there is not much space for world-building or complex characters’ interactions, but Mrs Hahn has dropped enough hints to make me confidently say that we are in for a hell of ride. I look forward to the next instalment. I received an ARC from the author in exchange for a honest review.
Your imagination of dragons is amazing. I loved this story and could so image that life and struggle of raising some. Your descriptions were so believable.
I love a good dragon story, but I've never read one quite like this - and I have to say that I thoroughly enjoyed it! What a novel idea to have Dragon Farmers.
I loved the world building done on Charl's farm, within the barn and the cave, and a brief look at the town. It's hard to believe the story takes place in such a limited location due to the action and adventure that was had!
Charl is determined, compassionate, and brave. Tough as nails running her families Dragon Farm all by herself. I loved her vulnerability, even as she stands strong in defense of what she believes in.
Prax was the perfect "boy next door," their relationship was very sweet with a little spice that gets laughably interrupted by intrusive thoughts at the end - such a great scene!!
Action/tense situations littered the book. I mean, they're farming dragons, of course it'll be tense. Can't say I enjoyed all of the tense moments in the cave, as a sufferer of claustrophobia myself - if a tunnel looks too small, then it's too small, just turn around, please.
Overall, it's a quick, great read! I can't wait to read the next book to see Charl make her way in this world and create her own legacy.

💭 I knew this series is about dragons- it’s right there in the name. So why was I surprised when we met our first dragon on page 5? Because I didn’t read any synopsis of this book, and because Caren Hahn sucked me into this world right away and I thought I was reading about broody chickens. (I have a broody chicken and I’ve spent a lot of time trying to get her off a nest of nothing).
💭 Charl is courageous and proud and she labours at a hard life because it’s what she believes in. When she is confronted by circumstances that would make a weaker person crumble, she stands up for what she believes is the right thing to do. And when the foundation of her beliefs is torn away from her, she doubles down on her convictions of freedom for all.
💭 I loved this story straight off, from the very first word. I’m so glad I waited until the entire series is out so I can binge it all.
Picked this book up because I like the concept of mundane activities with a magical twist. So of course farming with dragons piqued my interest. I was pleasantly surprised however with how quickly the writing sucked me in. Right away, the main character is very relatable and very down to earth. The dragons acting like very big chickens was a fun concept to me because chickens really are just evolved raptors. The overall pacing and how things unfolded had me glued to the screen way past my bed time. There is also a bit of romance which for the reader kind of comes quickly but still unfolds naturally in the progression of the story and it's events. This is definitely a book that's setting the stage for bigger events but the world building gets peppered in as you go along. No exposition dumps, just information given as needed. Overall I am pumped to read the next book cause I really need to know what happens next!
This is my first book in this genre, but I love the authors previous books, so I decided to go outside my usual genre. I'm so happy that I did. Embark on a captivating journey into the fantastical real of living and raising dragons. Immerse yourself in the magical alure of a meticulously detailed story. The authors words breathe life into the mystical dragons. The authors description and creativity have you living with the intricate beauty of legendary dragons with every stroke of her pen. You will unravel the ot woven into their existence. I felt I was in the paged of the book and raising these beautiful dragons. I love how I was transported into their world. Well developed characters, intriguing story, little romance, and can't wait to read book 2.
Hatched is the first book in the Dragon Farmer series. Char is doing everything she can to survive, and make her egg business sucessful after her brother disappeared. One of the dragon's is giving her problems, so she goes to a neighbor to seek help in gathering her eggs. All of her dragons are laying hens. So, when one of the eggs the dragon hid hatched. Char knows she is in trouble, as breeding dragons is highly restricted and illegal. To make matters worse. The Magical Regulation Squad shows up with questions about illegal dragon hatchlings and her brother's disappearance.
The opening chapter of this book is delicious. An everyday farming scene: Got to get the eggs, but one of the hens is broody… Only the hens happen to be dragons - made safe to an extent, fireglands removed, but they still have tooth and claw. The world-building is solid with a history of war and distrust between human and dragon, and indeed humans now farming them for their magic. Charl’s own history is dominated by a famous ancestor, Meirdan, who developed most of their understanding of dragons but was also a kind of champion and ambassador for the dragons - but she herself is on the lowest rung of society and pretty much an outcast in the local village. The story and its consequences develop naturally from this setup, along with what could be the beginnings of a rough road to romance. Recommended!
This book is cute. That’s the best description that comes to mind, and I’m not mad at it. I can identify with the main character Charlotte, who tries to wear pants that may be a touch to hug for her, but that’s because it’s totally necessary. And the boy next door? Yup, there’s him. And of course, who doesn’t get caught up in a good dragon story. A light read but written very well with a solid plot that will have me reaching for the next in the series soon.
An interesting blend of the familiar and the strange, the predictable and the surprising. The content is clean in terms of language and romance, and the fantasy violence never strayed into gore. I'm interested in more from the series, and I think I'd rather reserve most of my judgment about this book until after I see how the series goes. It doesn't end on a cliffhanger, exactly, but ends on the expectation of difficulties ahead.
The first in a trilogy, this quick read is fun and entertaining. A different take on dragons where in an age where only female dragons are domesticated and their eggs used for various tonics, a young woman dragon farmer, Charl, suddenly finds herself with a hatching egg - something that should be impossible if the egg is not fertilized by a male dragon.
What an intriguing storyline. I enjoyed Charl and Pax. Their friendship developed into a relationship and it was fun to watch. I am really interested in the next story to see how meeting her family goes. What about the hatchling? Does he bind to Paxs? Just a great clean story good for all ages.
I loved this original & unique take on a dragon story. The book really built as it went on and kept me turning pages wanting more! I liked that it wasn’t super lengthy and Excited to read Dragon Defender next!!!
This is not a slow burn situation. Instead it is Charl having a neighbor named Prax, that she seems to have fallen in love with outside of the words in the book. I say love because she confesses her feeling to a dragon. Otherwise I would've assumed she just liked the burly man. Somehow he loves her too. At least I think he does. Does he outright say it? To her, and not a dragon? hmm maybe it was atop that hill at the end when they embraced. Nope. I guess the slow burn part is them not confessing that they love each other. Perhaps it is said in the second book.
The concept of dragon farming is exciting. I like the fact that the author chose not to glamorize farming. Char is struggling, scarred and hungry. Eating turnip soup. The book was less than 200 pages. I suppose it was meant to entice one to read the rest of the series. I was not beguiled. It did seem like a book that builds, so I am hopeful that those who did continue with the series were satisfied.
Compelling and relatable characters. Plenty of action and adventure without being overdone. A little romance snuck in. Twists and turns. Kept me on my toes late into the night. Excellent fantasy adventure with dragons!!!!
