The Rose of the World

Rate this book
From the translator's introduction: "In picking up this book, you are about to embark on a fascinating journey. It is a journey to places where, according to the author, many of us have already been but about which we have forgotten. It is also a journey within, into that psychological space where our ideas and beliefs about God, spirituality, and religion reside. During both journeys, we are likely to encounter wonder and recognition, skepticism and acceptance, rejection and admiration, confusion and long-sought understanding. For some, this journey will be the start of a much larger one; for some it is but one more leg of a journey undertaken earlier; in any case, The Rose of the World is not a final destination." Completed in 1959, hidden from the Soviet secret police for twenty years, The Rose of the World was first made public through excerpts in the magazine Novy Mir in 1989. The Rose of the World is a unique and poetic cosmological treatise, passionately written out of personal spiritual experience. It offers a prophetic call for the spiritual reunification of all people and an open and harmonious relationship among the great world religions. For Daniel Andreev, The Rose of the world is a spiritual flower whose roots are in heaven; each petal is a unique image of the great world religions and cultures, and the whole flower is their joint co-creation with God.

Lindisfarne Books is proud to publish the first English translation of this masterpiece of contemporary Russian spiritual literature, a work that belongs to Russian religious thought in the tradition of Vladimir Soloviev, and to the West in the tradition of Dante and Blake--truly a work for the twenty-first century.

I had bought this decades ago, around 25-30 years ago. Some books are to be read in right time, some even are never to be read by the buyer but only by their relatives.
This book deserves five stars because it is authentic. Andreev (who wrote this book through his life agonies, exiled by the Stalinist regime for his ideas) is quite genuine. It is clear that he belongs to the stream of mystic Russian writers, but he is unique. Certainly his spiritual and mystical experiences led him to writing this book. This book cannot possibly be the result of theoretical approach, but only authentic mystic experience.
This does not necessarily mean that this mystic experience is 100% correct, or that it is correct on all issues analyzed. But the vibration arising from it is pure. I would say that purity deeply characterizes Andreev. He is a pure soul.
Some souls approach the Truth through knowledge/gnosis first, then attain purity of heart. Some souls attain it through purity of heart first, then approach gnosis. Andreev belongs to the second category.
In some issues this work reminds me of some concepts also approached by Rudolf Steiner: The theme of spiritual entities guiding national groups or various other groups. Steiner is far more scientific and analytical, but Andreev conveys the topic excellently. In my view this is also related to Archetypes behind world events, or Platonic Ideas.
One could apply some of the ideas developed in this book for further understanding of some world and historical events.
Andreev wrote this with the blood of his soul.

The book was written during the darkest years of the horrifying Stalin regime that was marked by parents telling on their children, friends telling on their friends, sacrificed human blood steaming down the altar of the almighty statehood and all-embracing fear paralizing the minds of millions of people.
Daniil Andreev was sentenced, if I rememeber right, to 15 years of maximum security prison for his literary works, because they were so humane, so anti-government, so freedom-seeking that it couldn't have been otherwise. And it's really a miracle that the Rose of the World survived until today. Actually, it did not survive, it was destroyed and the author, while being very sick, restored it completely out of memory very shortly before his death, after he was released from prison. His wife later said that "it seemed as if while he was working to restore the book, some angel was holding him in his hands. But right after Daniil finished, the angel let go of him, and he started getting weaker each day".
The most interesting idea that I found in this book:
When, in creating something, you seek glory for yourself, this makes you smaller, but if you do it for the sake of other people, it brings out the divine in your human nature and elevates you.

Well, I've just been reminded of this wonderful treatise by my friend's comment, yet I'm not capable of articulating much datail. I'm rather upset with myself, given how much I enjoyed reading it, and learned while reading it. Andreev caused me to ponder about so many of my assumptions, and I found myself rationalizing/integrating this material into what I thought I already knew. He influenced those assumptions of mine, and that potential is among the best reasons to recommend this work to all.

This is a great translation, as it seemed easy to read. This book also inspired me to read more on the life of this author, which led me to his father, Leonid Andreev, and his "Red Laugh" about the Japanese War, which recalled Steven Crane's "Red Badge of Courage" about US Civil War.

I think I read it all. I may have missed something as I skipped around, looking up things.

I don't think the other reviews mentioned that the book gives an over of the ~275-300 dimensions/spaces in Shadanakar, Earth's Bramsfatura, the set of all spaces of a planet. It tells of the dimensions (Zatomises) created by each major culture. Mentions all the classes of angels. The dimensions where people enter from other planets, which term I don't at the moment recall. All the sheols and hells. Heavens, Nirvana, spaces created by literature, animal dimensions, ... I know of no other book that talks about any of this. Other reviewers have told about the Rose of the World. Zventa Sventana, BTW, is here now. Look her up in the book. It's free at www.roseofworld.org, so you can search it.

Quoting from a translator of Swedenborg:

And still they gaz'd, and still the wonder grew/ That one small head could carry all he knew'.

Indeed, Andreev either saw what you and I can't while alive, or he was a creative genius of the first order. There is much in Rose of the World to light the religious blackness, so much complicated beauty, and reality, the scenes of impossible places, like something Roger Penrose will study and appreciate and indeed the Penrose impossible objects, according to Andreev, are not of this world, rather, they are caught by the spiritual fishnet, if you will, and brought back here to our Earth.

Has this ever been done?

Terence McKenna used to say that the Holy Grail of a DMT trip was to bring something back. Alas, not even Great McKenna managed such a feet. Andreev will probably say to Terence McKenna: "Hold my beer, comrade"!

We all wonder, is there another world, what is the beyond, what's it like? The religious literature is a blank. In the Bible, Jesus and Apostle Paul are silent. The Qur'an is sex in paradise for the men, and fire for the rest!

All religions lack imagination.

So Rose of the World is the book to take you on an epic tour beyond the veil! It succeeds..

The only criticism is the obvious questions of charlatanism and madness. But one can read this as great literature or just clever theology, or brainy philosophy and still come away with your soul/mind taken of a psychonaut's adventure.

I view all imaginal legendariums as fictively crafted frameworks, which are more or less useful. Daniil A.'s concept/percept of the "zatomis" as culture-specific imaginal/spiritual realms, is useful.

Yet certain specifics are idiosyncratic, and may be relevant mostly to Andreevists. And his blurry lens on certain cultures, such as American Indian zatomis, is obscured by his own personal and national makeup. Nevertheless, an interesting and bold story, written by an Anthroposophically-Aware mystic.

It was okay, mostly the ramblings of a Christian psychonaut trapped in a Soviet prison, who couldn't even fathom that a non hierarchical, non us vs them reality is possible.
