This is an excellent resource for anyone wanting to develop more flexible thinking and resilience in the face of an increasingly tough and volatile world. Gemma writes in a really accessible way, exploring evidence and case studies, and sharing some of her own practices and those she does with clients. I particularly liked the coaching chapters throughout the book, with simple, practical and insightful activities.

"Mindset Matters: Developing Mental Agility and Resilience to Thrive in Uncertainty" by Gemma Leigh Roberts is a book that guides readers on how to adopt an agile mindset to excel in times of uncertainty and rapid change. The book outlines five fundamental tenets for developing mental agility:

1. Building Resilience: Resilience is crucial for navigating the dynamic and ever-changing world of work. To be more resilient, individuals should focus on three key aspects: confidence, adaptability, and mastery. Confidence involves believing in one's ability to overcome challenges, adaptability enables individuals to turn setbacks into opportunities, and mastery allows for remaining calm and focused during challenging times. Examples from companies like Spotify, Elon Musk, and Lego illustrate the importance of these resilience pillars.

2. Increasing Cognitive Flexibility: Cognitive flexibility involves fine-tuning one's mindset to adapt to change and uncertainty. Prioritizing mental agility and embracing failure as a learning opportunity are essential strategies for maintaining cognitive flexibility. The ABCDE model, exemplified by Michael Jordan's experiences, provides a framework for embracing failure as a stepping stone to success.

3. Cultivating a Growth-Infused Outlook: Developing a growth mindset, as coined by Carol Dweck, is crucial for seeing setbacks as opportunities for growth. By believing in one's capacity to learn and grow, individuals can overcome challenges and adapt to evolving work demands. The stories of Jeff Bezos and Microsoft's CEO, Satya Nadella, exemplify the power of a growth mindset.

4. Fine-Tuning Emotional Intelligence: Emotional intelligence is a dynamic skillset for understanding, expressing, and connecting with emotions, both in oneself and others. Self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, and relationship management are key components of emotional intelligence. These skills enable individuals to handle situations mindfully, make better decisions, and foster positive relationships, as illustrated by the experiences of Avon's CEO and other leaders.

5. Kindling Meaningful Connections: Building strong connections, both on an individual and group level, is fundamental for mental agility. Positive collegial bonds contribute to psychological safety, where open discussions, honest feedback, and seeking help are encouraged. Interdepartmental connections rely on strong leadership and mentorship, fostering collaboration and mutual growth. Examples from companies like Bento for Business and Workday showcase the significance of meaningful connections in the workplace.

In a world characterized by rapid change and uncertainty, adopting an agile mindset is essential for thriving rather than just surviving. By embracing these five pillars of mental agility, individuals can equip themselves with the necessary tools to excel in any disruptive event or evolving work environment.

Are all self-help business books just summarising each other at this point? (There are only so many mentions of buzzwords a girl can take, and if I hear self-awareness, growth mindset etc., one more time, I might need to resort to reading dark academia again).

Takeaways:
- The question, then, isn’t so much about how to recover from change – but about what you can do to adapt and thrive on inevitable transformation.
- This goes beyond quick thinking – it’s a nurtured mindset for riding complexity, seamlessly pivoting between ideas, and soaking in the thrill of learning.
- Let’s be honest: change has been the name of the game for decades. We’ve got tech revolutions, societal shifts, and economic roller coasters all playing their part in the grand evolution of work. This is why resilience will always matter – it’s the first line of defence against the crazy twists of the modern work world.
- Toolkit: Confidence, Adaptability & Mastery
- Unlike a static IQ, emotional intelligence is a dynamic toolkit for understanding, expressing, and forging connections with feelings – both your own as well as those of others. And in today’s rapidly evolving work landscape, it’s a skill that can turn relationships into collaborations and uncertainty into opportunity.

When in doubt, turn to the ABCDE model – which Michael Jordan embodied when he didn’t make his high school basketball team (not that I could care, but anyway). Instead of wallowing, he defied disappointment by choosing productive beliefs and actions. Notes below:

A is for “activating event” – the coach’s decision not to include Jordan on the team.
B is for “beliefs” – Jordan believed he could prove the coach wrong.
C is for “consequences” – his determination led to hard work and making the team.
D is for “disruptive thought” – Jordan intended to keep proving the coach wrong.
E is for “effective new approach” – he showcased progress and demonstrated his competence differently.
