Memory Lane: A Sydney Brennan Novella

Rate this book
They should have left well enough alone.

Florida PI Sydney Brennan needs a break. She just finished an intense week on the road, on the heels of a case that fundamentally changed her life. And nearly got her killed.

That’s why an exhausted Sydney is doing her best to pass out in her favorite bar (no booze required) when her world tilts on its axis again. Someone she hasn’t seen in more than fifteen years walks through the door, and he asks her to take a little trip with him.

Their journey starts out as a simple one—I just need to see her; she doesn’t even have to know we’re there—but soon they are tangled in a web of secrets and lies, threats and accusations. And the one person they wanted above all else to keep safe is suddenly in jeopardy.

Because there is nothing more complicated—and dangerous—than finally facing the past.

About the author

Judy K. Walker

16 books42 followers
A recovering criminal attorney, Judy K. Walker has enough spare letters after her name (and student loan debt) to suggest that insatiable curiosity is something fictional private investigator Sydney Brennan inherited from her creator. Fortunately, Judy’s curiosity rarely involves murders. She also penned the Dead Hollow Trilogy, an Appalachian thriller series with a touch of the paranormal that taps into her West Virginia origins.

The Sydney Brennan Mysteries stand alone, but do build upon each other. The books, featuring Tallahassee Private Investigator Sydney Brennan and a recurring supporting cast, are (in reading order): Back to Lazarus, Secrets in Stockbridge, The Perils of Panacea, No Safe Winterport, Braving the Boneyard, River Bound, and Grave Truth.

Dead Hollow is a true trilogy of supernatural crime thrillers and must be read IN ORDER: Prodigal, Founder, and Heir.

Judy writes from her home in Hawaii, where she is surrounded by husband, feral pigs, and assorted geckos.

I received a review copy from the author at my request and this is my honest opinion. This was a very enjoyable read. I really like the characters in this series and enjoyed spending more time with them and getting to know their relationships a little better. And surprisingly, one of my favorite characters had a really short part, but he made an impact on me that I'm not sure I fully understand. That was the character of Sam, a homeless man that Syndey's dad picks up. There was something about him and his interaction with Sydney that though it was very short and unimportant in the great scheme of things, carried a lot of heart.

I only had two minor issues. The first was that this book wasn't quite as exciting as some of the others; not that it was dull and/or boring, just a little calmer. The other was the situation with Toby, Lyla, and Victor. I never felt I got a full explanation of what was going on there and why. I got enough information that I was able to draw some of my own conclusions, but I would have liked a fuller explanation so I knew I was on the right track. I will definitely be looking forward to the next book in the series.

I simply loved this little gift of a book from Judy K Walker, which she has dedicated to her patient Sydney fans (yes, that would be me!)  A little different from others in the Sydney Brennan PI Mysteries series - a little less intense, a little less drama, a little less life threatening, but still just as good! It is a great addition to the series and a treat for long time fans. If you haven't read the first 7 books in the series you might want to give them a go first - you won't regret it!

I was captivated by this story and tried to guess what could happen next. Sydney needs a break from solving cases. Unfortunately this isn’t the right time for that. Plenty of action and if anyone can solve the mystery, it’s Sydney.

Not what I expected

I thought this would be about an old case but it's not. This book shows how complicated life can be. It is about the past but also about family and how no one is perfect. I enjoyed how this was still Sydney at her finest.

I enjoy this series all the more with each installment. Memory Lane let’s us get to know several of these interesting characters we’ve met in the previous episodes so much more fully. I look forward to future episodes in the (admittedly fictional) life of Sydney Brennan.

This book was another great addition to the series. Prior to reading this book I did a binge re-read and found that this new book was very consistent with previous character traits. The plot was very well written and had me wishing it was a full length book versus a novella. This is a well written and entertaining story. I received an advance copy in exchange for an honest review.

Received an advance copy of this book. When I saw it was only 138 pages long, I was disappointed it was so short. But this author can pack so much action, sarcasm, humor, and full plot with few words. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and plan on reading the whole series again. It was great to find out more about Sydney’s past. I really hope the author keeps writing about her. Highly recommend this quick read.
