Author's note:Doing Summer Right: A Lesbian Erotic Romance Novella, is available as a free ebook download exclusively from my website.
Hazel Jones just wants a quiet life in the woods. She has everything she needs, except recovery from her humiliating past. The only breath of fresh air is her complicated friends-with-benefits relationship with Riley and she’d be gone in less than a week. Before moving states away, Riley made it her mission to enjoy their last summer days together to the fullest.
When executive chef and old fling, Summer Bedingfield arrives at the campsite for an event, sizzling attraction and more than cooking lessons heat up between the three women.
Riley and Summer show Hazel exactly how to do summer right.
“Don’t get all sappy on me yet. I’m still here to make sure you’re doing summer right, like always.”
3.5 stars. A quick and steamy best-friends-with-benefits-to-lovers novella, with a little ménage for added spice. I really liked it! For something this short, it was important for the author to establish the relationship quickly and effectively so I would care about them, and she did that pretty well. I loved Hazel and Riley's banter, and how their closeness just jumped off the page. They just felt so comfortable and sweet together, and I've have gladly read more of them. I liked the writing too, mostly. There was some awkward phrasing and word choices and sentence construction, but nothing too egregious. I just had a really good time with this, and I'll be sure to check out more from the author.
⭐ WLW romance novella ⭐ Best friends with benefits
🌈 Lesbian FMC 🌈 Bi FMC 🌈 Black FMC
🌶️ Threesome
This fell solidly in the middle for me. A best friends to lovers, second chance romance, but I don't feel like I felt a particular connection with or between the two characters.
I often feel friends to lovers can be really hit or miss with a novella as there's not much room to explore the friendship before it actually progresses towards the relationship, so that might be it. The book itself was well written (although I was a bit confused by the celebrity chef threesome that came out of nowhere).
Overall, I definitely think Hazel and Riley's relationship would've played out far better in a full length novel vs a novella.
this novella could have really benefited from being a full length novel. right away, you learn that the two main characters are best friends who occasionally are friends with benefits, but i didn’t really feel a connection to either of them and i think it’s because this book was so short and quick paced.
This was an entertaining, short, steamy read. It wasn’t perfect by any means, but it was enjoyable; I would give it a low-4-stars. I read the other novel first (The Honeymoon Mix-Up) so I recognised a bunch of the side characters and I think that helped with this novel, as otherwise some of the scenes would have felt disconnected, random, and confusing. Given the short page count, I don’t think this novella benefitted from having the cameo from Basil for example. I think this would have made an excellent full-length novel and if the author expanded it, I would absolutely grab a copy.
The author did a good job considering the page count. They fit a lot into this little novella, and that can be very difficult! They established the close and important relationship between the characters effectively and right away without wasting time. I was a little confused about the exact dynamics of their relationship, and some of the timeline components, but it wasn’t enough to get in the way of enjoying the story. Their relationship was sweet, and I loved the MC’s, together and separately. The story was straight to the point which was good.
There were unfortunately some missing details and/or random elements throughout which hurt the overall product, but not too much that I didn’t still enjoy it. I don’t know why the threesome scene (or entire plotline) was necessary, but it wasn’t unwelcome lol.
Hazel is getting summer camp ready. Her best friend, Riley, is there to help before moving to Seattle. Summer, a TV chef, is coming to do a class for the campers coming in a few days. Hazel and Riley have been on and off lovers for years. Summer was Hazel's lover years ago when she was a counselor at the camp. Now Hazel is getting ready for Riley to leave and reliving her past with Summer. Will the ladies make it through camp?
I enjoyed this story. It is a quick read. I like how the story sets up the world of summer camp and getting ready for it. I also liked the time frame is short, focusing on one day. A lot happens but Hazel has to make decisions to get back to living instead of hanging out at camp in Florida.
I liked the teasing between Hazel and Riley. Their past brings changes to them as decisions are made. Summer pushes Hazel a bit as Hazel remembers 10 years earlier. When Riley makes her move on Hazel with Summer urging her on, it gets hot! I want to see more of these ladies but they do end on a high note.
Sometimes I'm amazed by how much an author can fit in so little space and NOT overwhelm it. This was a veeeery pleasant reading. If my winter didn't feel like summer already, I'm sure reading this would've warmed me enough. I'll be definitely paying attention to this author.
Hazel and Riley have so much chemistry, it's palpable. And again this was so well put I'm feeling ambivalent about it, because I don't think we need more, what Frankie delivered was enough, but at the same time these two are begging for more, and so I am. And not just because of the clearly fitting pairing these two make, but I'm curious about their families, careers, the whole drama that I know is there. I'm invested.
editing: I saw that there's a series coming involving them, so I cannot wait for it.
Sometimes hard to tell who's pov you're reading. 64% through the novella, you learn that Riley has a commerical fashion business that has never been mentioned before...I literally thought that she only ran the camp and help in the office season.
The smut was pretty good. The whole plot of this novella, I think, is to add a third. However, I don't feel like Summer was really involved, like I thought she was would be. She watched, and did a bit more, but I thought there'd be more with how much Hazel and Riley talked about Summer, and how summer literally said "you both look at me like you want to undress me", yet Summer was the only person not undressed. And then she just casually left.
The last 10% of the book is just the first chapter of another book.

I’m not sure why it took so long to read this short novella. I loved ‘A Flight to Love’ and immediately subscribed and got the bonus epilogue and this novella. I read the ep but didn’t read Doing Summer Right. Well I missed out back then but oh man am I so very happy that I read it now! Wow oh wow. This author knows how to write! She sucks you in from the beginning. The spice is so so amazing and 🥵. You feel the connections. You feel the tension. You feel the spice! You feel the love. I can’t wait to read more from this author! She has quickly become a fave!
I didn't care much for Summer or the erotic aspects of it all (not fully my thing), but Hazel and Riley were so cute together! I mainly read this because I wanted to learn more about Hazel and Riley after "The Honeymoon Mix-Up", and this certainly delivered. I was worried this book wouldn't say much about their relationship, and while I wouldn't have minded a couple more pages about it, this book really set things up for them. Go them!
This was a good read but it ends before it really gets started. It left me wanting which I guess is the point of this introduction but I want more to the story and I hope we someday get the rest of Hazel and Riley’s story.
This book is so steamy and left me wanting so much more. I really hope we get another book about Hazel and Riley because it can’t just end with AMAZING sex and the comment of moving to Seattle.

3 stars. Hot, hot, hot. I liked the writing but the characters felt the same. No problem as I was mainly here for the smut and this absolutely delivered on that front.
