It’s been only a little over two years since I read the first Sarah Spillman, “Deadline Connections,” by Renee Pawlish. And now I just finished the tenth in the series, “Deadly Premonition.” This novel is one of the few that can be read without having previously read the first nine though I much prefer the character development in each previous book.
Book Ten opens up when the main character, Sarah Spillman and her cohorts in the Denver homicide division, Spats and Ernie, are visited by a psychic, Dora Reading, who comes to the station to tell of her vision. Dora had an all-encompassing and distressing daytime dream of a murder taking place in an abandoned warehouse in a seedy area of Denver. A man, she claims she doesn’t know, is murdered by a gunshot to the chest after an argument. Much to the dismay of Dora, who felt compelled to do the right thing and report her vision, she is met with disbelief by Sarah and her team. At this juncture in time, no murder has been committed in a warehouse in downtown Denver.
Of course, this fact changes within the next 24 hours and over the course of the next couple of days, Sarah, Spats and Ernie investigate the murdered man, Roy Campbell and his family, along with Dora…because the psychic could have made up the entire vision to cover her tracks.
Without giving anything away, the mystery within Deadly Premonition is standard fare…nothing crazy but still enjoyable. Three star rating because I really missed not learning more about the main characters and their backstory development.
