Apple Valley Love Stories #4

The Even Odder Couple

Rate this book
Spencer Crane thinks I’m a human tornado.

I think he’s a calendar app come to life.

While he schedules? I spin-out.

When I spontaneously combust? He overcompensates.

And this is why convincing my new boss to hire him is a completely brilliant idea.

You see, workplace romance is forbidden, but attraction between total opposites like Spencer and me is a non-issue.

I repeat: Non. Issue.

I only wish I hadn’t discovered Mr. Clark Kent Glasses is (secretly) scorchingly hot. Even worse, he’s funny and chivalrous, and shoving me straight out of my Tess the Mess comfort zone.

But we both need this job. Like, a lot. And if our boss catches wind of any fraternization, we’ll be fired. Not to mention my heart’s already at risk of being axed.

So when Spencer starts treating me like I’m a magnet and he’s a fistful of iron, I’ve got a tornado-sized problem on my hands.

Starting now, I’m doubling down. I absolutely cannot fall for Spencer Crane.

Even if my total opposite might be everything I need …

This heartwarming, hilarious romantic comedy has all the sizzle and swoon, but no explicit content. The entire Apple Valley series can be read in any order, so grab The Even Odder Couple today and get ready to fall in love!

I love this series! Julie Christianson’s writing immediately pulls me in and I can’t help falling in love with her characters. Tess & Spencer are adorable! This is truly a fun, cute, opposites attract love story that was hard to put down! What’s amazing is not only are there plenty of laughs (cue the Colin Firth and Star Wars references), but the characters have recognizable fears and issues they work to overcome. It’s a sweet, clean, romcom I highly recommend!

Tess the Mess as Spencer calls her is a whirlwind of activity. She flits from one thing to the next. When the summer camp directors elope, Tess steps in to become the new director. The only problem is she needs a guy to stay overnight who she’s not going to “fraternize” with to please the mayor and keep her job. But, though Spencer’s her total opposite, his Clark Kent personality and good looks make him irresistible. Can she overcome her fears of being hurt and having a family enough to give love a chance?

Spencer is the epitome of efficiency and organization. His problem is he always seems to fall for the wrong girl. As a librarian, he doesn’t make too much money so he takes on another job at his brother’s car garage to earn a down payment on a house. Tess is the last person he thinks he’ll fall for, so when she offers him the chance to make even more money by spending evenings at the camp, he agrees. There’s also the bet he makes with his brother to go on dates. Can he convince his brother he’s dating Tess? And what happens when opposites really do attract? Is Spencer just choosing the wrong girl again?

I loved these two! They really have a fun friendship that blossoms into more. Despite the harmless teasing and banter, they bring out the best in each other. The car wash, eating lasagna with chopsticks, Frozen movie, all those fun camp moments, Spencer’s protectiveness, the snakebite, the blueprints/lantern picnic, and Spencer in a tux were favorite moments as well as those swoony kisses. I loved watching Tess become more confident in herself and her abilities, and Spencer becoming more carefree and spontaneous. The quirky mayor, Mrs. Lockhart was a hoot. I also enjoyed seeing familiar characters again.

It’s a must read sweet romance romcom fans will love. The summer camp setting was perfect for a summer read! I honestly hate to see this series end and hope there might be some spinoff stories with Tess’ sisters. I received an advanced complimentary copy from the author. All opinions are my own and I was not required to provide a positive review. 4 1/2 stars

They are complete opposites but are a perfect match. Sometimes it's necessary to be odd to balance each other out. When Tess’s job at the summer camp becomes threatened, Tess comes up with a mutually beneficial solution for her and Spencer. Spencer is an organized, neat freak and Tess is a loud, wild tornado. I could totally relate to Tess’s feelings of insecurity as she tries to find value in herself.
Spencer also has his own issues, while he strives to earn enough to move out of his parents’ house.

"Spencer nods. “That’s a lot of nots.” I nod back. “Three nots.” “Does a triple negative mean it’s a positive?” “You tell me. You’re the math guy.”

Slow burn, sweet-clean romance, well written, the banter was witty, and the characters are easy to fall in love with and understand. this book had me smiling throughout, it was so lovely!

Reread via audio and adored it just as much as the first read through! Spencer is my spirit animal. 😂🫶🏻

What can I say?! The Even Odder Couple was all I hoped it would be—definitely making it a top read for the year. It was so perfect! I love Tess and Spencer so much. I loved all the little nods to the previous books and I was seriously laughing out loud and swooning the whole time I read. It was just the best!

Things I Loved:
-Delightfully flushed
-Fortuitously
-“I’ve got plenty of … league.”
-Pectorally (iykyk 😂)
-“He’d probably tell me I was chasing him wrong.”
-Squinky
-Mess & Clark Kent
-Mrs. Dodd & her costumes
-“I’m speechless.” “And yet … you’re speech-ing.”
-Future girlfriend seeds
-“Measure twice, cut once.”
-“‘What kind of lunatic can read seven books in the next two weeks?’ Hmm. Well, I can. But I assume her question is rhetorical.”
-The Colin Firthiest Chef
-T-Time
-“He’s an Eagle Scout Librarian Clark Kent Superhero. Spencer Crane does no wrong.”
-The Steaming Wienie
-“I don’t know what you think I know you know. But I’m not saying I know you know I know anything.”
-The new Fight Club
-& the most full and adorable turning point and HEA ♥️

I loved that Spencer and Tess’s relationship just felt real, they tackled the real topics that matter in relationships and each grew so much, yet the road there was so fun and so sweet.
This was opposites attract in all the best ways & it totally was like a role reversal of my husband and I, which made it extra fun to read.
I don’t want to say goodbye to this series, but if it has to end, this book is the HEA that Apple Valley deserves. 👌🏻♥️😍

Adorable. The setting was everything I wanted. I was in the mood for a cute little small town rom-com, and that's exactly what I got. As always, if you're looking for a brilliant piece of literature, this isn't for you. Also, the five stars doesn't necessarily mean that this is my favorite book ever. It just means that it hit the right spot, and I didn't have any glaring qualms to take off a star.

Considering that I wasn't the biggest fan of one of the other books in this series, I'm glad I still decided to read this one. And I'm out.

As part of the early arc team, I am providing my opinion voluntarily and unbiased.

Synopsis: You see, workplace romance is forbidden, but attraction between total opposites like Spencer and me is a non-issue. And if our boss catches wind of any fraternization, we’ll be fired. So when Spencer starts treating me like I’m a magnet and he’s a fistful of iron, I’ve got a tornado-sized problem on my hands. Starting now, I’m doubling down. I absolutely cannot fall for Spencer Crane. Even if my total opposite might be everything I need …

My Thoughts: The story is narrated in dual POV from Tess and Spencer, in their perspective. This is book four in the Apple Valley Series, I started with this book, but will absolutely be going back to read the other books in the series, matter of fact, they are already on my kindle! I really enjoyed how the focus was on two characters but the other characters from previous books still made an appearance. I loved the premise, an eight week camp where you cannot fall in love with the hottest man you know, and when there is a slight nod that he may be attracted, you have to double down to not fall in love. The characters were well developed, they had depth, there was witty banter, instant attraction, great chemistry, and creatively developed. The author’s writing style was complex, plenty of swoon, character driven, and just brilliant. The characters were built up with their backstories established, the plot was amazing built in, a little twist towards the end, then wrapped up in a beautiful bow. While this is the first from this author, it will not be the last, and I will read anything she puts out. I highly recommend you go purchase this book right now that was released a few days ago!!

Oh, my! This quirky and adorable romance is my new favorite in the Apple Valley series.

I wondered how Tess and Spencer would work as a couple but they are even better together than I imagined. Their opposites attract romance is full of pitfalls and hilarity but they really are perfect together.

I loooved watching their relationship slowly transform from the car wash and the chopsticks through all the moments at summer camp to the rescue and to the last chapter which just about melted my heart into a puddle. I fell a little bit more in love with this book with every page and I can say with certainty that it has earned a spot on my rom-com favorites shelf.

Read this one for the laugh out loud moments, the adorable side characters, and for the on-point romantic chemistry between two wonderful characters.

This is one you do NOT want to miss. Julie Christianson is an auto-read author for me and this book is the perfect example of why!

I received a complimentary copy of this book but a positive review was not required.

This was so sweet! I just love a good love story, especially when its opposites attract.

I wasn’t paying attention that it was book 4 of a series so now I think I have to go back and read them all. The side characters are all so lovable, I want to get to know them better!

SILLY.

BLOG || INSTAGRAM

I know there’s a line for everyone on what’s too silly in a romance book. This one crossed that line for me in multiple facets and I think I’ve come to accept that this author isn’t for me. Her stories are sweet and there’s goodness here, just some frustrating things I’ve found that keep me from being fully immersed.

Spence was wonderful. I liked his nerdy and kind ways. He had that charming level of jealousy that I like he was clearly smitten with Tess. All good things for me.

Tess on the other hand? Would not shut up about some other woman that she thought (and then when was told otherwise, still forced) Spencer was into. It was annoying and relentless and I couldn’t handle one more mention of Kayla. Along with that, I thought the mayor was an odd character who didn’t quite fit either. You can fulfill the tropes you’re going after without a wild emphasis from other characters.

Anyways, I don’t know. The setting was fun too. I do love a camp setting and liked seeing that Tessa had found her element. The miscommunication running RAMPANT is about the only thing I keep circling back to when I think about this book. Oh well.

Overall audience notes:
- Contemporary Romance
- Language: none
- Romance: kisses
- Violence: low
- Trigger/Content Warnings: snakebite

There is not much better than getting to read a sweet rom-com. This one by Julie Christianson already has characters that I know and love. And it just made me happy to get to read it!

I have to say that for me both Tess and Spencer were characters that I didn’t love as much because I didn’t understand them. But in this book, they both come alive and jump off the page. And I grew to love them so much. They may be my favorite couple in this series. But…I really have the worst time picking favorites.

Tess has been kind of wishy-washy throughout the series. She’s jumped from one job to the next. But she really hits her stride in this one running Apple Valley’s summer camp. I loved getting to see how much she loved the kids and how much they loved her. And I really loved the way she got Spencer hired as her helper, and how she had to try so hard to not fall in love with him because of Mrs. Lockhart, the mayor.

Spencer just seemed really odd and crazy in the other books. But in this one, he becomes belovedly quirky. And I loved that! His bet with his brother made me laugh. And how he’s pushing Tess so hard, when she’s trying to back off. The whole dynamic between the two of them through out the story was so perfect!

There are so many side characters in this one. So many twists and surprises. I LOVED it all so, so much! And I’m really hoping this wasn’t the end of the Apple Valley Love Stories series.

I was sent an e-copy of The Even Odder Couple as a gift from the author. All opinions are my own.

The epic conclusion to Julie’s Apple Valley Series is coming to you next Monday, August 1! I’ve loved Julie from book1, when our book club @fortheloveofbooks_bookclub picked up her book for our June 2021 read. I read in like 2 days time (which for me back then, was unheard of). It possibly was the real cover that drew me in, but it was her writing style, the characters, the story and of course Apple Valley that I fell in love with!

Why I loved this book:
🏕Car wash
🏕Spencer’s “glow up” transformation
🏕Family Breakfast at Spencer’s
🏕Holding hands at The Beanery
🏕Silent bro battle with Clive
🏕Bonfire & Smores
🏕Spencer’s joggers
🏕Falling on a snake & the Rescue
🏕Saturday night movies

Since the beginning we’ve met:
🍏Mac, Brooke, Daisy
🍎Nash, Emi
🫐Lucy, Fix, Mrs. Dodd/Grams
🍇Jill, Owen
🍏Tess, Spencer, Mrs. Lockhart

@juliechristiansonauthor I’m hoping we get to see stories about: Olivia, Darcy, Clive, & Frank and Alice (even if they are novellas)

I’m sad that Apple Valley’s series is over, but that just means I cannot wait for what new people and places Julie is taking us next!

I honestly didn't think Julie could make me love another couple more than Nash and Emi (My Own Best Enemy), but somehow she did it! Spencer and Tess are perfection and I adore them both so much.

Spencer is a tidy, organized, neat freak and Tess is a loud, wild tornado who Spencer has nicknamed Tess the Mess. They are complete opposites but are a perfect match.

I loved how both characters have their awkward and quirky characteristics. They both have to overcome insecurities within themselves and open themselves up to the possibility of getting hurt.

Also, it was so fun seeing the rest of the characters again! And Mrs. Lockhart cracked me up the entire time.

Although this is book 4 of the series, they can all be read as stand-alone (though I do recommend reading them in order!)

If you love:
*Slow Burn
*Opposites Attract
*Forced proximity (at a Summer Camp where there is no dating between the staff!)
*Adorably quirky characters
*Banter
*"Touch her and I'll kill you" (Yeah, there's a couple of those in here.)
*Small town romance

Then you'll love this book!

**Thank you to the author for an ARC in exchange for my honest review

This book was everything I love about books by Julie Christianson! It was hilarious and swoonworthy, with great characters and romantic tension galore!

What happens when chaos meets order? That’s the question that popped into my head from the first chapter of this book. And the answer in this case is fireworks. Gorgeous, amazing fireworks! I loved both Tess and Spencer, and their character arcs are so well written! I loved discovering the different layers to their personalities and what made them who they were. Watching them realize how much they cared for each other was wonderful, and I laughed and swooned my way through this book!

The romantic tension for this book was perfectly plotted, and I was on the edge of my seat several times because I couldn’t read fast enough to find out what would happen. But at the same time, I didn’t want to finish because I just wanted to keep reading about Tess and Spencer!

I loved all of the side characters that popped up from the previous books in the series! Mrs. Dodd is a special favorite of mine, and I got very excited each time she showed up in the story. There are so many things I loved about this book, like the library, the people of Apple Valley, and the humor and banter. It is an instant favorite book of mine, and is one I will be rereading in the future!

5/5 stars!

Oh wow. I am so glad I was able to read this, my first, by Julie Christianson. I laughed, got teary-eyed, and felt everything the characters were feeling. I. Loved. This. Book. Clean romance, sort-of enemies (you probably have to read the previous books to know for sure) to lovers, and a happily ever after.

I will be ordering this series in paperback.

Thank you, Julie Christianson, for allowing me to be on your ARC team.

This was so cute! I love the whole nerdy Clark Kent vibe in a MMC and Spencer was everything he needed to be. Opposites quite literally attract in this. A couple of side characters really annoyed me in this (rightly so) but I could deal with it. I love it when they’re lowkey in denial and then their feelings smack them in the face. So wholesome <3

“You … think I’m pretty?” Her voice is quiet. Slow. Full of disbelief. All I want is to scoop her up, carry her to the nearest mirror, and say LOOK. — Spencer

“I think I could be happy anywhere with you.” — Tess

First off, let’s start with me pointing out how glad I am to be part of the ARC team for this book! Can’t believe I received it before the actual release and I WAS DYING TO START READING. And can I just add that once I did start, I couldn’t put the book down? I posted my review late because life got to me 😔 But here we go!

Moving on to my review… I LOVE THIS BOOK! I can’t mention enough my love for the story and the characters. There is so much depth in the characters that made them so realistic. The chemistry between the two characters was amazing too. Lucy and Fix were amazing but Tess and Spencer might be my favourite couple at the moment. The slow burn and witty banter between them were top-notch!

I absolutely enjoyed reading about how possessive Spencer was over Tess. When I first read about Spencer’s role in Pretending To Love Lucy, I didn’t think he would be THIS kind of man. He was also so caring and patient with Tess and it made me swoon.

The pacing of the book was great too. I was never once bored of reading and every side character really added to the comedy and storyline. 10/10 😊

Julie Christianson has done it again and I absolutely enjoyed reading this. She has managed to bring up my expectations of men. Where can I find myself a Spencer in real life?

Julie Christianson has just sucked me into Apple Valley, and I AM LOVING IT. The opposites attract story line was so well done and an absolute joy to read. I adore the characters in this story, Tess and Spencer may just be my new favorite couple in Apple Valley...I love them all, but man, Spencer in this story is amazing, Superman status worthy. I adore him.

Watching Tess and Spencer come to discover who they are individually and as a couple is an absolute delight to watch and read. There are plenty of the heart-to-heart conversations, the sassy moments, the laugh out loud interactions and all the swoon you could want in this sweet romance.

I also need to just add, Julie Christianson is a QUEEN at dialogue. Holy cow, I loved Tess and Spencer's conversations, the thoughts of that go back and forth, the words that come out of their mouths. So entertaining and such a great addition into the Apple Valley Love Stories series. Even if you haven't read the rest of them pick this one up!

Review

They say opposites attract but this book had the odd couple EVER and you know what was the best part sometimes it's necessary to be odd to balance each other out. This book was so much fun it had the perfect amount of banter and awkwardness in the FMC Tess, aka T-Time. The word play and name calling is funnier than anything else, the characters of Tess and Spenser are so well built I couldn't help falling in love with them.

Tess is a Tornado of joy, she shifts jobs like one changes shoes! She is always in a hurry, she is spontaneous and always cares for everyone around her, what no one knows is how insecure she feels about it! She hides her emotions a lot and does it like a pro, she has a heart of gold only she can't see it!!
Spencer is a person who's very organized and he does nothing without planning before, he calls Tess a Mess because that's what he sees in her, her chaotic work style and her spontaneousness takes him off-gaurd. When his brother Frank makes a bet he takes it out of pride, hey he only has to lose all of his down payment money that he's been saving up right, so he plans on using Tess as a front only his heart has other plans!

The banter was witty, the plot was building up right until the climax and will hit you like a freight train, the characters are easy to fall in love with and understand, the pace is medium, the wording is easier for a beginner reader even and the writing style is just splendid!! The author has definitely been added to my FAVORITES list and I can't wait to read more from her!!

"But he's looking at me like I'm his favorite candy on Halloween. The best Christmas present under his tree. Like with all the options in the world before him, I'd be his choice."
Tess isn't sure where she belongs. And, in trying out different things, she has convinced herself that everyone sees her as flighty and a mess. Like Spencer, the ultra organized, planner who works at the library. Tess and Spencer have always pushed each others buttons. But, when Tess gets an opportunity to prove herself by being the director at Sunny Camp, the summer camp in Apple Valley, she sets out to prove herself to everyone, most of all herself. The only way she can become director is by assuring the mayor that she is not looking for a relationship. And, when she needs someone who isn't a threat romantically, who can be a chaperone at the boys camp, she asks Spencer. They would never fit. However, the more time they spend together, the more it challenges the views they both have about each other and about themselves. Could they actually be the perfect fit?
I loved this story so much! Each installment of this series has been a joy to read. Tess and Spencer were so wonderful to get to know. Tess is battling insecurity hard, and I pulled for her so much to finally be able to see the good in herself and stand up for what she wants. I enjoyed getting to know Spencer, and begin to see that maybe all his "love pursuits" in the past had been more about the "safe" choice, instead of what he really wanted. Getting to see more insights into his character made me care for him and hope that both he and Tess would be brave enough to trust each other. The writing is wonderful! It is witty and romantic! I love getting to see more of the McCoys as well!
I would highly recommend this story and all those by this author!

Tess and Spencer’s story was wacky and sweet and funny and emotional and all the things I want in a romcom! I loved being back in Apple Valley and seeing all the characters we’ve gotten to know throughout the series!

I love opposites attract stories because they show how weaknesses can become strengths and how different personalities can mesh well together, and I definitely got that vibe from this story! On the outside, you wouldn’t think that Spencer and Tess would make a good match, but the way they support and challenge each other is what makes them so great together!

As much as I wanted to take Tess by the shoulders and shake her at a couple of different points, I also deeply connected with her and loved the way she grew in this book. As someone who also could be called Mess (although it doesn’t fit quite as well with my name as it does with hers lol), I know how hard that space can be, but I really loved how she found her passion and proved to herself that she could be successful and that there is beauty in a little chaos. And Spencer was so swoony! He definitely needed a little chaos in his life, and his dynamic with Tess was wonderful!

I love small town romances and the funny, strange, laughable cast of side characters that halo make the story feel real. All the citizens of Apple Valley were such a fun aspect of this book!

If you haven’t checked out The Apple Valley series yet, I definitely recommend it! This book can be read as a stand alone, but I definitely think reading the other books before hand makes it more enjoyable!

Thank you SO MUCH to Julie for this advanced copy and for this super fun book and series! All thoughts are my own. 🖤🖤

#BookReview: THE EVEN ODDER COUPLE by Julie Christianson

“The rest comes down to the faith you invest in the person you decide to fully trust.”

Have you read any of the books from the Apple Valley series? This is the fourth book but it can be read as a standalone. I like the play of odd and even in the title and you will understand better when you read the book. This is an entertaining series.

Tess and Spencer were polar opposites. I like that Spencer was responsible, a librarian and carried his own chopsticks :). Tess has some good qualities too but she was insecure at first. They were different but they were able to work well together.

The book was fun but it took me a good bit to get into it. The second half was more fast paced and less ogling I guess. Overall, this was an enjoyable book to read if you like romcom. There were some interesting and quirky characters too. I really enjoyed the individual character growth of the MC’s. They needed to grow to see each other’s worth. The support of their family was sweet. The snake incident was scary though. The book made me think that our own outlook in life affects how we see things around us. We see what we want to see. I am glad that Tess overcame her insecurities and found love in the process.

A sweet love story that I absolutely loved. Spencer, oh my God!!!! He was this amazing guy and what a boyfriend. This guy deserves to be on everyone's book boyfriend list.
Tess grew so well in this book. In the beginning, she wanted to prove herself and was under-confident, but by the end, she was confident and happy.
Spencer and Tess were two different poles. Spencer was Mr. Perfect, who had chopsticks in his car and Tess was "his mess". Their story escalated from enemies to lovers. The biggest plus point in their relationship was how true they were to each other. The proposal was super cute.
A definite must-read when you need sweet-sweet romance.
CAUTION: You will fall for Spencer.

“My point is we can’t protect ourselves from pain forever. Not without closing ourselves off to real happiness too."

"Dex and I have been researching how to treat scars. Tess’s skin will be good as new.”
As if I care. Tess’s skin could peel off completely and I’d still love her. I can’t wait to tell her that. I need to tell her.

but she’s already halfway down the road.
A whole world away from me.

My only hope is that I made her feel safe afterward. That when she laid her head on her pillow that night, she slept soundly. And that every morning since, she wakes up believing someone will always show up to protect her.
Even if that someone is me.

I’ve loved following this series and I love that you’re able to follow the characters’ lives as the series continues.

Now, I’ll admit that I was NOT a Spencer fan in the previous books of the series and I wasn’t particularly excited about his book. HOWEVER, both Spencer and Tess go through some magnificent growth over the course of the story-their character arcs are pretty much everything. This story allowed me to see Spencer in a completely different light, with all his vulnerable, socially awkward, and afraid parts exposed, and I admit, I fell for him a smidge. I did feel, however, that Spencer was neurodivergent but it either wasn’t mentioned or an opportunity for representation was missed. I appreciated Tess’s growth as well, and it was nice to see her be able to see herself as something other than a mess or a tornado. I loved that rigid, unchanging Spencer was eventually able to embrace her spontaneous spirit, and loved her for it.

I do feel like this story felt a bit clunky. I didn’t love it as much as I did the others in the series. Regardless, this is a quick read and a sweet, no angst love story.

I was given an ARC by the author. All opinions are my own.

This is a sweet contemporary friends-to-lovers/opposites attract romance with a little comedy! I adore Spencer as a beta hero, and I like the way he and Tess (grow to see and support each other deeply. The small town setting PLUS a summer camp make it stand out, and the small moments of the characters' internal dialogue are hilarious. The plot loses a tiny bit of momentum toward the middle, in my opinion, but the ending holds a few surprises and is cute.

This is the first novel by Julie Christianson I've read, and I HAVE to blame her Instagram following for bringing it to my attention + hooking me with teasers. I'm always on the lookout for beta heroes in fiction, and Spencer did not disappoint.

I absolutely loved this adorable and charming book! Tess and Spencer have been such fun side characters in the other Apple Valley series books and I loved that they got their own story. They were an even cuter couple than I had imagined and I think this story may be tied for my favorite book of the series.
Spencer had so much more to him than we have seen previously. I loved how Tess called him Clark Kent and more than once he lived up to his nickname. He was a nerdy stud and I was here for it. I also liked the growth Tess experienced in the story. The camp was a fun setting with some fake dating that wasn't quite so fake. Their first kiss and chemistry were enough to melt Smores and I couldn't get enough. This was just the type of happy romance I needed and I fully recommend it.
While this works as a standalone, it did such a great job of wrapping up the series with fun cameos of previous characters that just put a giant grin on my face.
This is a clean romcom. I received an advance reader copy of this novel. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

This book started a little slow for me, but then it totally kicked off, and had me hooked! Spencer and Tess were an unlikely match, but this was an opposites attract story, and it was great! Such a great conclusion to the series and some openings for side series.
