Factopia!

Gross Factopia! Follow the Trail of 400 Foul Facts

Rate this book
In this disgustingly marvelous world, you will discover facts about smelly sports, weird world records, rank rodents, vile Victorians, horrible medicine, gory gastronomy, and more—all of which are connected in unexpected and hilarious ways! Did you know that sloths poop only once a week? Or that poop from crocodiles was sometimes used as makeup in ancient Rome? Or that ancient Romans sometimes purchased vials of gladiator sweat? Or that apes and monkeys sweat from their armpits just like humans do? Welcome to Gross FACTopia! , a wonderland of fantastically foul facts, all of which are verified by Encyclopaedia Britannica! Every fact in this book is linked to the next in an ingenious trail of information, where you will slither from topic to topic in surprising and stomach-churning ways. Sometimes your path branches, and you can catapult forwards or creep backwards to a totally different (but still connected) part of the book. Follow your curiosity (and your nose) through this ridiculously revolting world of facts!

A grossly fun book about foul facts and disgusting animals + more!

I was so excited when I found out that there would be more Factopia books! I really enjoyed the first book, which I found in Dutch at my local bookstore, and so I had to get this one as well, and I will also be getting the new books when they come out!

In this disgusting book we get all sorts of disgusting facts! About poo and pee and leeches and tongues being eaten or stomachs being pushed out to clean them from vomit and such to much more. Some of the facts were new to me. Other facts made me almost puke. Haha. My stomach just cannot handle these things, but I just cannot resist reading books about facts like this. It is just too much fun as well. Sorry, stomach. XD I loved that, just like the previous book, you can follow certain paths. I wasn’t in the mood to switch to another path so I just stayed on the slow path that got all the pages! Maybe when I do a re-read for these books I will get to doing a path or more paths. I am curious what kind of paths there are.

I loved the variety of facts. Not just human stuff, but also animals, food (shivers), strange historical facts, museums and their collections (eww). It was really fun. And I liked that you had a bit of a hint on what would be on the next page (or if you followed on of the paths). Like one would say braiiiinsss or another would say Good Germs.

And I loved that there is a combination of photographs and illustrations! It really made me smile and at times also laugh out loud!

All in all, I need more Factopia! because these books are just too much fun!

Britannica Books returns to the world of Factopia, this time with GROSS Factopia 😵‍💫 — “amazing facts verified by Encyclopaedia Britannica” 😂

I now know everything about poo. The oldest fossil of aforementioned is 50,000 years old 🫢 and sloths poo, erm, once a week!

Ancient Egyptian doctors believed they could cure toothaches by placing half a dead 🐁 on the painful tooth.

Anybody know what a rat king is? 🤯 Or how many descendants a pair of rats could bear IN ONE YEAR?

The same chemical causes the same smell in both vomit as well as in p_______ cheese 🤢

And I faint because one London museum exhibited cheese made with bacteria from celebrities’ armpits 🥳

This book’ll be hard to put down because every factpage is linked to the next one, in a bit of a narrative arc. And there are also page numbers to detour to, to read up on other topics.

This silly book tells a variety of gross facts that kids are bound to be obsessed with. From poop to skunks to strange ancient medical treatments, this book has all of the grossest and silliest facts kids will want to know! I can definitely see my grade 3 students being enthralled by this weird book. It is definitely a potential future favourite of my students and I'm sure others in this grade range too! I would recommend this book to teachers and parents of children in the age 7-12 range. Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for giving me the opportunity to read and review this book!

This cleverly-designed book follows in the footsteps of two other similar ones by the same publisher--Factopia! Follow the Trail of 400 Facts and Return to Factopia! Follow the Trail of 400 Facts. But this one focuses on all sorts of gross information about toilets, poop, smelly plants, vomit, and the contents of some delicious candies and shimmery nail polish. There are even snippets of information about rats, snakes, sewers, and frogs that can turn their stomachs inside out. While readers can read the entire book straight through or browse sections at their leisure, what makes this one unique is how dotted lines throughout its pages lead them from one part of the page or one fact to another, and then how they may choose to follow the dotted lines according to an area of interest, moving backward or forward or heading off on a detour to learn even more about a certain topic such as eyes or snot or dinosaurs, for instance. While some pages contain several colorful text boxes, other pages contain only one image with brief commentary, making this a fast read. Still, some readers will want to linger over some of the trivia provided in order to digest it or recoil in horror. For example, I'm still thinking about and shuddering over the man who set a record for moving the most maggots with his mouth--37 pounds of those squirmy creatures! UGH! UGH! UGH! There is a helpful table of contents and an index for readers who want to skip right to the sections they expect to be most interesting. But honestly, there wasn't a page or a fact that didn't fascinate me. This one is perfect for anyone who enjoys publications from National Geographic or Guinness Book of World Records. It might be best if it's not read during mealtime, however.

Thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for letting me review this book.
This book is an explosion of color! I like how the contents’ page is set up. The zigzag lines connecting each info piece is great. It’s easier for your eyes to follow instead of guessing where to goto next.
There are some interesting facts that I bet adults wouldn’t know. I’ve always heard the expression, “Running around like a chicken with it’s head cut off.” and after reading this, I understand the expression better.

This book of gross facts is a winner. Some facts were so gross I couldn't believe they were true and had to look them up, they were indeed true. I also enjoyed how everything connected to the facts around them. It really is a great way to make education fun and I will be purchasing this book in the future
