I've owned/read many Elvis books over the decades. He's one of my passions to read about, because he's such an interesting and multi-faceted personality. I was lucky enough to visit Graceland in 2019 to get up close and personal with all the things I read about. I was surprised to see this author writing a book again because he wrote a book called "Elvis, My Brother/an Intimate Family Memoir of Life With the King" back in 1989, which I read. I wondered what more he had to say on the subject. Apparently, in 2018 Billy had a heart attack and was clinically dead for about 12 minutes. During that time he encountered what appeared to be heaven and also met up with Elvis. He starts off the book with this revelation, then retreats back to 1960 when he first met Elvis.

Billy Stanley's mother Dee married Elvis's father Vernon Presley in 1960. Dee was divorced with three young boys, Billy, Rick and David. Billy describes how when he first went to Graceland, he didn't even know that Elvis was a famous person. All he knew was the love that Elvis showed the boys as he embraced them as the brothers he never had, showering them with presents and making them feel like true brothers- not stepbrothers. Elvis also instilled in the boys his fervent Christian faith. Elvis always had his Bible with him, which had many personal notes handwritten in the margins. In fact, when Billy and his brothers grew up and became "The Wrecking Crew" that accompanied Elvis on tour, it was one of Billy's responsibilities to make sure Elvis had his Bible with him.

Billy tells a lot of fascinating personal stories about Elvis such as an incident where Elvis tracked down/confronted a fellow student who had been harassing Billy, handling an abusive customer at McDonalds, and an impulsive visit to The White House. Interspersed with these stories are some pertinent Bible passages, including Elvis' personal Bible notations. I wasn't always that interested in these brief passages and occasionally skimmed.

It's been decades since I read Billy's original book about Elvis, but I've retained some memories about it. I think it was more "dishy" and a bit snarky regarding interactions with Priscilla. I remember him saying that Priscilla was much more sophisticated than Elvis's current fiancee at the time of his death in 1977, Ginger Alden. In comparison I found this book more "watered down" with a gentler tone, focusing on all the beautiful moments and important conversations with Elvis. There was nothing mentioned about drug misuse or any tawdry details. However, as simplistic and pared down the focus was in this book towards uplifting, spiritual matters involving Elvis, I felt good after reading it. The writing style was very easy and free flowing. Elvis knew he had a God given gift, and he tried to use it to the best of his ability. He included gospel songs in his concerts, something perhaps his fan base might have not expected, but probably came to appreciate. Interestingly enough, the only Grammy awards he ever won were for his gospel recordings.

Thank you to the publisher Thomas Nelson Books who provided an advance reader copy via NetGalley.

This was my first Elvis biography and I really enjoyed reading about his strong faith. I thought he seemed a compassionate and generous man. He was a human man - broken yet striving for Christlikeness. Quite a few YouTube nights listening to his gospel songs. Such a beautiful, soul-touching voice! The writing wasn’t perfect but the stories were worth the read.

The Faith of Elvis by Billy Stanly was an interesting book. When someone passes away, a lot of stories come out about the bad things about the person who is no longer able to defend themselves. This book is the complete opposite.

All words and opinions are my own. I was given a complimentary copy of this book from NetGalley and the publisher for my honest review.

Full review on my blog!

Thank you to the author and publisher for inviting me to review this wonderful biography and for providing me an advance hardback copy of ᴛʜᴇ ғᴀɪᴛʜ ᴏғ ᴇʟᴠɪs. I found my audio copy on Libby. All views are mine.

Opening quote: [Elvis] said..., "It is not a sin to be rich, but it is a sin to love money."

I was surprised how much I loved this faith-centered biography of Elvis from the perspective of an adoring little brother. I felt this cross-section of the King's life revealed something truly special about him, and remarkable about fame and the vulnerability it brings.

Three
(or more) things I loved:

1. I love this image of Elvis as the spoiling, over-doting big brother. I knew he grew up an only child, so that he got this opportunity as a young adult to be a brother is a truly wonderful story. For the boys too, having a much older brother with such vivacious spirit was a source of love, excitement, and huge personal growth.

...

3. This was my first biography about Elvis and I am now fascinated with the subject. I intend to seek out more books about him, starting with this author's other book about Elvis. What a fascinating figure-- only ever wanted to be like Jesus and become arguably the greatest pop star who ever lived!

Three (or less) things I didn't love:

This section isn't only for criticisms. It's merely for items that I felt something for other than "love" or some interpretation thereof.

1. It's interesting to me that Elvis was a polarizing figure in his own household, as he was in the wider world. He had an idea about what kinds of childhoods his stepbrothers ought to experience, and he went to great lengths to execute his visions for happy boyhood....
...

Inspirational & Uplifting

If you’re an Elvis fan and feel like you have heard it all, you are in for a real treat with this book. Elvis’s Gospel recordings are a treasure he left his fans as a way to share his personal faith. He said the best way to share the Bible was simply to sing it. Despite his flaws, he was a sincere person trying to be his best. This book contains some truly wonderful stories that will make you smile.

I liked reading this one on Elvis by his brother (stepbrother) Billy. Ever since Billy’s mother and Elvis’ father, Vernon, married, Elvis had always treated the three brothers as his brothers too. And when his father and their mother, divorced, Elvis had still treated them as brothers. He was constantly talking to them about God, the Bible, and Jesus. Billy was always in charge of Elvis’ bible that he brought with him on tours and movie sets. Elvis had a big faith. But I don’t know if he “was right with God.” Billy writes that a few weeks before he died that Elvis rededicated his life to God. So possibly if he was sincere, maybe he was. That’s between him and God now. That’s what this book is about mostly. Billy wanted everyone to know who Elvis was to him as a brother. I recommend to anyone who likes Elvis and wants to read about him. There’s no bad language or anything vulgar. Just a brother writing about his brother, Elvis. Thank you to #NetGalley, the author, and publishers for giving me an opportunity to read and review #TheFaithOfElvis with my honest thoughts and opinions. They are my own.

I don’t rate books about people’s live or experiences.

What I will say is that even if you aren’t a fan of Elvis this is a wonderful book to remind you of the love and grace of God.

This was the absolute perfect book to wrap up my month of reading with and I cannot wait to read it again!

Definitely recommend ❤️

Also, Elvis is wonderful. 😭

Written by Elvis' younger brother who was adopted by Elvis' dad, this story focuses on the strong faith that was prominent in Elvis' life. Incidents where he practiced Christian values abound. Bible verses and stilted conversations where he attempted to impart those values to Billy are recounted until they all seemed the same. The main point of the story is the emphasis on what a loving, humble, Christian man Elvis was. His faults, failures, and troubles are barely mentioned or are glossed over. While there are numerous events described that demonstrate his strong faith, I would've appreciated less repetition and a more realistic look at the man.

How Great Thou Art

This is a beautifully written and easy to read dedication to Billy's brother Elvis Presley. It was so hard to stop reading and put it aside because of day to day life, but I would have to. This made me feel special to Elvis just reading it. Through the tears and laughter I am now a little more insightful about the way Elvis seen Jesus. I titled it "How Great Thou Art" because that song is of great significance to an event in my life. Also, it's my favorite gospel son Elvis sang that I grew up listening to. Although, I do love them all! I really don't know how anyone could not walk away from this book unchanged. I am recommending it to everyone rather they are Elvis fans or not. For the fan, I believe you will love him even deeper. For the curious, at the very least, you will fall in love with his faith. I have been a Christan for about 14 years now and just lately the Lord has been prompting me to dive into the person of Elvis and after reading the things Billy has written for God's glory and Elvis' honor, I am no longer wondering why. I am so grateful for Billy and admire his loyalty to his brother and to Jesus. I am inspired. This has been one of the biggest spiritual blessings of my life and I sense a great spiritual "Elvis" awakening taking place, (that is for the kingdom of God). Elvis is still ministering to people and building God's kingdom today.

This is the first book about Elvis that I have read. I was just 4 years old when he died, so I don't know much about him, other than a few songs, and maybe a movie or two. I was glad to learn that Elvis had a strong faith, that he read and wrote in his Bible everyday, that he treated all people alike, and that his favorite music to play and sing was Gospel.

Stanley wrote an earlier book in the 80's titled: "Elvis, My Brother". I will have to read it to see what info it has. Billy's mother married Vernon, Elvis' dad, when Billy was 6. Billy than either lived or was around Elvis for the next 17 years before Elvis died.

If you expect to read about Priscilla's marriage to Elvis, scandals, or even Lisa Marie than skip this book. Lisa Marie is only talked about once in the whole book, and it's at the end. The book has quirky stories, as well as, serious stories that involve Elvis and Stanley. It's a book of Elvis's faith and how he felt about God.

Thanks to Netgalley and Thomas Nelson Publishing for the Kindle Version of the book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

would like to thank netgalley and the publisher for letting me read this book

the faith of elvis is actually a book that describes how elvis lived and breathed the bible, and how the gospel music he recorded meant more to him than anything else he recorded in his life time

but its more than that with little insights into elvis's world through the eyes of his brother.. little snippets that add to the charm of this book

i feel the need to go an listen to a few of his gospel albums but what a life he led

So sad I couldn’t finish this.. I had so many pages tabbed and couldn’t put it down.. The little middle finger to the Presley family and all the muck about the Presidential Medal of Freedom turned my stomach and made me put this down.

Very repetitive and hard to follow. Goes back and forth in time with little to no rhyme or reason. It reads as one long love letter to his brother but without much substance.

The Faith of Elvis
by Billy Stanley
Pub Date 04 Oct 2022
Nelson Books, Thomas Nelson
Biographies & Memoirs | Christian | Nonfiction (Adult)

I am reviewing a copy of The Faith of Elvis through Nelson Books and Netgalley:

Bill Stanley goes behind the glamour and the crowds, beyond the movies and the records Apart from all who knew him, wanted to know him, or just wanted to be near him.

Billy Stanley knew Elvis Presley as a brother—and as a man of deep faith.

From the time Bill Stanley arrived at Graceland and received a bear hug from the King of Rock and Roll to the last conversation they ever had, one thing stayed the same: Elvis’s passion for sharing God’s love with as many people he could.

The Faith of Elvis shows a side of Elvis that is not often shown, in this book Billy brings to light Elvis Christian journey, sharing things like the notes Elvis made in his beloved Bible to his struggles with sin as his fame increased to his remarkable generosity toward fans and movie stars alike.

In Billy's loving account you will discover some touching family stories of the Elvis that pop culture doesn’t know; a keen look into how Elvis intricately wove his faith into every part of his life; insights into the ups-and-downs the four brothers experienced while at home and on the road together; and examples of Elvis’s profound influence on others, from those closest to him to his cherished fans and, ultimately, the world at large.

And in these pages you may find your own faith strengthened.

I give The Faith of Elvis five out of five stars!

I don't usually read non fiction, but I won this book in a Goodreads giveaway. I had been to visit Graceland, and enjoyed Elvis, so I was excited to read the book. If I could give half stars, this would get a solid 3.5 rating.

Stories of Elvis - gets 5 stars. I enjoyed reading stores about him behind closed doors and all the good things he did for people.
His faith - it actually didn't consume the book as much as I was expecting but there were many instances referring to his faith. (hence the title of the book). It was interesting to read that no matter what he did, he carried his faith with him. I could have done without some of the long psalms though.
The writing - it was kind of repetitive at times and not always the greatest of writing. This is what ultimately led to my rating.
Surprises - I didn't realize that Elvis had three (step)brothers. It was heartwarming to know that he accepted them into his life and welcomed them into his home.

Overall - an interesting read for fans of Elvis. As I mentioned, I don't usually read non fiction books so I can't compare how it stacks up to others in the same genre.

I really enjoyed reading the backstory to Elvis the believer through the eyes of Billy Stanley and his family being connected with the Presley household.
It was well structured and the narrative flowed very smoothly. The discussion guide was an interesting addition since one does not normally find this device in a Memoir of this kind. The one thing that astonished me was the claim Billy made on page 152 that Elvis included How Great Thou Art in the set list for his Aloha from Hawaii TV Special- that was not the case. Elvis did not perform that gospel number during that TV special.I'm puzzled by Billy's slip here and how the publisher did not fact check those kind of public details.Anyhow, I still rated it highly as it gave many good insights into Elvis the man and his abiding faith in

I finally received my book, thank you for GoodReads. I found the book to be uplifting, spiritual, a look at kindness and generosity of a megastar through his stepbrother. It wasn't a tell all, gossipy book.. it focused on personal situations in Billy Stanley's interactions with his brother with the overlay of Elvis' relatonship with the Christian Bible; the role it played in Elvis' everyday life. I personally think it's the 'right time' for a book like this-- a book that allows us to feel good, to look at a celebrity without the lightning, thunderstorms of scandals but with goodness and kindness.

I do not give out to many 5 out of 5 ratings. But I so enjoyed this book very much. It changed my viewpoint of Elvis greatly. I highly recommend this book to any Elvis fan it will probably show you a different side of Elvis that you may not know about. It was written by one of Elvis's step brothers. There was a quote of Elvis's in the book that greatly moved me. You know how people call him the King. Well Elvis said there is only ONE True King. I so appreciated that quote because it is so VERY true!!!! I actually hated this book to end!!!!!

Basically a new edition of Stanley's "Elvis, My Brother," but with less sex and drugs.

p. 143 "Many people don't realize how conservative Elvis was. The perceive him as a rock legend, which he was, but he also believed in law and order. He had once told me, "The Army will clip your wings like they did mine. Elvis felt he was "watered down" when he came out of the service. He no longer had the desire to buck the system."

Compare to:. He went in James Dean and came out John Wayne.

p. 184 Gladys was not 42 when she died.

I felt this book was written with sensitivity and that I was part of the inner circle by someone who knew The King both professionally and personally. I enjoy and appreciate this book was a glimpse into Elvis's struggles and how has faith helped him in his dark hours/days. However....

I do not think I learned anything new about the life of Elvis Pressley. I still appreciate this as a fan of his music. Recommended for any fan of his music but do not expect any new tidbits.

Thanks to Netgalley, Bill Stanley and Nelson Books for an ARC in exchange for honest review.

The Faith of Elvis: A Story Only a Brother Can Tell ~ Billy Stanley

⭐⭐⭐ 3/5

Growing up I thought I knew the man they called Elvis. His music was always good and the man seemed likable. But as a now older man and a man of faith reading this book gave me a different perspective of Elvis than I had before. During reading this book I listened for the first time all of Elvis gospel music and was pleasantly surprised by how many gospel songs he had produced but most of all how great they were. Perhaps some of the most heartfelt gospel music ever produced. You can get a sense of this man's faith through those songs.

Elvis wasn't perfect by any means. He fell short of God's glory as we all do and being famous all his sins were in the media and open for all to see and gossip about, despite his personal battles against sin Elvis knew his own shortcomings and he knew the cure was Jesus Himself and so he clung to Jesus, his Bible was heavily marked and well worn.

I liked the part that said you can go to any rock and roll concert and never hear a gospel song but in those that Elvis performed in he made it mandatory to play gospel music part way though the concert and this was his way of sharing about God to others.

This book is a good encouragement to give us good evidence that we might see Elvis in heaven one day. Of course no one knows the heart of a man or the faith of a man except God himself, but this book does offer hope that Elvis had a genuine faith in God through His Son Jesus.

The Faith of Elvis by Billy Stanley came across as a beautiful remembrance of his big (step) brother. Billy and his two brothers came into Elvis's life when Elvis's father married their mother, Dee. Billy was seven at the time and did not know how big of a deal Elvis was, just that he was a kind and fun-loving, generous older brother, he immediately made the three boys feel welcome and wanted at Graceland. This book highlights the many good times they shared, including their mutual love of music and fast cars. The book also highlights, as the title suggests, the faith of Elvis. I found all of this to be interesting and I loved learning more 'behind-the-scenes' of this aspect of his life. I absolutely love Elvis's gospel songs, so found it interesting to learn that the only Grammy awards he ever won were for his gospel music. This book is not a 'tell-all', there is very little mentioned of anything negative or salacious. Billy says Elvis was only human and had his shortcomings, but doesn't mention drug use, although he does say he loved the ladies. There is also very little mention of Priscilla (I actually don't remember any) and I only recall one comment regarding Lisa Marie. Thanks to Nelson Books and NetGalley for the eARC. All opinions shared are influenced by nothing other than my own reading experience.

"It was plain to see he was sent from God above. He loved his fans and his fellow man. To touch our souls that was his plan. He lived a life filled with hopes and dreams. He was our hero from the movie screens. One Day God called him, took him by the hand. He said, 'It's time to go and leave Graceland.' Elvis asked, 'Does this mean that I'm through?' God said, 'Don't worry, my son, they will never forget about you.'"

What a beautiful way to close the book. I've never read anything about Elvis and I think this is a fantastic book to start off with. I enjoyed every moment. It was nice to see an aspect of Elvis that I've never really seen or heard covered before. Then again, this is a story only a brother can tell as the title says.

There are only two major complaints that keeps this book from receiving a full five stars. The first one is that oftentimes it feels like the book focuses more on Billy Stanley's story rather than a deep insight into the face of Elvis Presley. The second thing is that many of the stories are repeated. Things that Elvis said or did are sometimes repeated throughout the book, unfortunately. However, overall this was a great book. I actually almost cried several times reading it.

Can I just start by saying this is one of the best books I have ever read!! DO NOT walk, run and get you a copy. This is definitely in my top Ten list if not top Five. What a wonderful job Billy Stanley. Elvis would be SO proud!!

Wow!! Such an inspirational book. This is one I will read time and time again! Thank you, Billy Stanley for sharing the faith that Elvis carried everywhere he went. What a wonderful soul. I wish there were more people in this world like Elvis. I was only 3 when Elvis left this earth for Paradise (nonetheless a huge fan). I know he is singing with the angels with his beautiful voice. I could sit here for hours and tell you all how much this book has inspired me to come closer to Jesus even more than I already am. I could also talk forever about Elvis and his kind and giving spirit among many other things. What a wonder man. I will not tell much more because I hope with all my heart others will pick up this book and learn what it is like to have such strong faith and belief in God. I promise this book will not disappoint. I mean I could write a book about this book. RIP Elvis Aaron Presley!! I can't wait to meet my Saviour Jesus when my time comes and maybe I will get to meet you too, until then sing and dance with all you heart in heaven!

Wept buckets. While a lot of the stories may be familiar to Elvis fans, the focus on Elvis' commitment to teaching the Stanley brothers how to navigate life, girls, and God reveals the heart of his character in a way that may get lost in other books. I particularly loved seeing some of the conversations Elvis had with Billy about carrying forward his legacy and his private fears about pleasing God and finding forgiveness. There is also a wonderful passage about letting ourselves be led by the heart when interacting with others, opening yourself up to them even if you are afraid of being hurt, which is just a perfect distillation of the Christian walk that so many of us find so difficult. It is something I struggle with, but I love how Elvis thought about it and how he reassured Billy that it is not something that comes naturally to any of us, even though Elvis made it seem so. This is a very warm, loving memoir, and I'm glad to see Billy center this side of his brother.

This was a very endearing story by Bill Stanley.

I loved hearing some first hand accounts of exchanges and interactions with Elvis that no one really knows of. It helped shape more of his philanthropic side, reinforce it, and inform us more about it. I also appreciate how Bill doesn't shy away from Elvis' faults as well, but doesn't center on them either. It came from a very respectful place.

The writing itself was very casual, which made it a light read. If you're not of a more religious background, then this book wouldn't be in your target audience, though. However, I appreciated the touching on Elvis and his morals guided through his sense of religion and open, almost Agnostic (without realizing it) views.

Overall, a fresh perspective on the man that doesn't sit on his image of fame, but his personal family life and faith. Worth a read if you are a fan.

I can not imagine someone who is anything less than a huge elvis fan getting much out of this. The jumpy timeline makes it hard to follow unless you already know Elvis's life story and it stays on the topic of faith so it's not a good introduction nor biography of Elvis. It is also very very 'curated'. I was frustrated with how the author spoke of Priscilla, the very few times he mentioned her at all- despite their having lived together as well. It is clear he doesn't view her as ever being part of their family which is weird since they actually have a bit in common.

3.5/5 I enjoyed many bits. The writing is very simple and there is repetition, definitely not a hard read. I am willing to overlook much because you can feel how much the author loved Elvis. Repeat:I can not imagine someone who is anything less than a huge elvis fan getting much out of this.

Overall not a big book in physical size or material. It’s not a glowing review of Elvis. He touches on Elvis’ adultery. He doesn’t talk about Priscilla or any women by name. As Stanley gets his own life in the 1970s, he wasn’t there for Lisa Marie. He wasn’t there for drugs or messed up touring schedule.
There are parts where Stanley forces in Bible quotes to augment his stories. It’s eye-rolling.
He gives an insight to personality and beliefs. It’s odd considering the title that Larry Geller isn’t mentioned or the Colonel’s desire to get rid of Geller.
Stanley tells bout his family before and after Elvis so it’s not just an Elvis book.

This book written by one of Elvis' stepbrothers was quite interesting and provided information from a family member who grew up with Elvis and had an inside picture to Elvis' strong faith and his love for Gospel music.

Shortly after Elvis finished his tour of duty and the death of his mother, his father, Vernon Presley, married a lady named Dee who had 3 young boys ages 2, 4, and 5. Elvis immediately fell in love with all 3 of the boys and became both a father figure and mentor to each of them. The eldest, Billy, has written this new Elvis biography focused on his faith. We see a side of Elvis that many did not know. His tenderness and moral guidance of each of the boys was a highlight in his busy life. Billy presents a realistic picture of Elvis' faults but yet his strong faith that followed him everywhere and supported his great love of Gospel Music. The only prominent award that Elvis won was not for his rock and roll music, but rather one of the American Association of Gospel Artists for his Gospel Music.

Wonderful read with information and insight on Elvis from a family member.
