Rate this book
Socialite Quinn Appleton knows how to live life—at full speed and with no limits. She has the perfect life, an amazing boyfriend, friends by the bucketload and an eye for fashion. Life is good.
The Appletons are a household name, their eponymous biscuit empire having been in the family for over one hundred and fifty years, making them one of the country’s richest families. They are no strangers to controversy either, constantly gracing the covers of gossip magazines, caught in compromising positions at outrageous parties.
But CEO and matriarch Lady Elizabeth Appleton has had enough. Tired of her children and grandchildren not pulling their weight and dragging the once respectable Appleton name through the mud, she decides to cut them all off financially.
With her life in ruins, Quinn is just one Jimmy Choo heel away from living in a cardboard box when Gran gives her an ultimatum: take a job at the company for six months and her trust fund will be reinstated. The catch? She must do it under a false identity and work her way up—no one can know she’s an Appleton.
Surely it can’t be that hard to hold down a lousy job? After all, millions of other people seem to do it. But Quinn is about to learn just how different the world is when you find yourself suddenly working class.

This is such a great story, I loved meeting poor rich girl and socialite Quinn Appleton, who has her world torn apart in so many ways on that terrible Christmas Day by matriarch of the Appleton family and her grandmother, her life was perfect boyfriend, lots of friends beautiful clothes and a fantastic car, but was it really perfect?

The Appleton’s have been operating one of the largest biscuit empires for over one hundred years and Lady Elizabeth Appleton is running it all supposedly with the help of her family, three children and three grandchildren who aren’t pulling their weight and when one scandal after another hits the media Lady Elizabeth is determined to change things and makes a huge announcement on Christmas Day that will change everything, she has cut off their money and taken back their cars things are going to change.

Quinn is left with nothing no job, her Ferrari is gone and soon the roof over her head as well, she has boxes of designer clothes and shoes but that is it, when Gran gives her an ultimatum, a requirement to re-instate the trust fund, that is to work at the factory for six months but not as Quinn she must become Amy Sinclair and she must not tell anyone who she is. Quinn is determined to prove that she can do this, she wants her car, her lifestyle and her money back.

Quinn soon finds out that working in the factory and getting to know her workmates is a lot different to what she expected and is soon feeling good about it all although she is dreadfully worried about her father and Gran is giving nothing away on that front, the room she is renting in a rundown house is nothing like she is used to but soon her flat mate Scott is becoming a friend and helping her and listening to her about certain things without giving anything away.

This book has so many emotions running through it, Quinn has a lot to learn and really surprised me how she came through and how strong she really is, there is a lot going on in this story it is fast paced and will keep you turning the pages, it is a romance, some suspense, contemporary and an all-round fabulous story one that I would highly recommend. So many fabulous characters in this one that added to the story, I really enjoyed seeing Quinn realise that life as a socialite is not the best life and she can make a difference. Don’t miss this one.

My thanks to the author for my digital copy to read and review.

Accidentally Working Class was a delightful, funny rom com with a sprinkle of suspense.

Quinn Appleton finds herself into her kind of hell when her grandmother cuts her and her family funds, she loses her boyfriend, friend and apartment in the blink of an eye.
She accepts to work for the family's company in order to reclaim her trust fund, but Quinn will soon figure out that it won't be so simple.

I liked Quinn, maybe not at the beginning when she was entitled but I completely re-evaluated seeing her work hard and fight for her colleagues.

It was the first time I've read a Karly Lane book and I've really enjoyed this story. The writing, the storyline and the charaters were captivating and enterteining.
I adored the movie feels I got reading this novel. Highly recommended.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for kindly giving me an advanced copy of this book to read.

I've never read anything by Lane in the past, but I'll be looking up her future books. This was a quick, fun read--one that is a great beach read option. I enjoyed connecting with Quinn/Amy and watching her grow throughout the story. She is an easy character to root for. It's a great reminder of how you should not be too quick to judge someone, as most people are more than you may realize at first glance. Quinn is a strong character, and the supporting characters are equally enjoyable. There is a bit of everything in this book, from rom-com to suspense.

If you enjoy books such as Sophie Kinsella's Shopaholic series, this is a book to add to your TBR pile.

Disclaimer: I received a complimentary copy, but I wasn't required to leave a positive review.

Thank you Karly for sending us a copy to read and review.
In the grand tradition of Sophie Kinsella and Jessica Dettmann, Karly Lane has branched out into the world of hilarious contemporary modern fiction and with a five star book, this could very well be a new genre addition and addiction to her already wonderful catalogue of rural romance stories.
When anyone thinks Appleton’s they think the biscuit empire.
For generations the wealthy family have been making the famous sweet treat but members of this clan grace the society pages for all the wrong reasons.
When matriarch Lady Elizabeth announces she is cutting all of them off financially, chaos erupts.
Quinn Appleton is totally shocked, devastated and thinking how can she afford her next pair of expensive high heels.
Now her life is in an utter mess, she is given an ultimatum.
Take a job in the factory in the company and keep out of trouble.
But there’s a catch, no one can know who she is and must keep out of the gossip magazines and then she will get her inheritance back.
Now she is someone else with a new name and new identity.
Quinn thinks it’s a piece of cake but life has other ideas.
This is such a fun, campy, entertaining and amusing story.
Karly needs to write more books in this genre because clearly she has a talent for it.
Quinn is a character who begins life as a spoilt brat and through adventures, wise words, life lessons learnt and other self changing affirmations becomes a better person.
With a splash of romance, a cast of misfits and plenty of drama, all incorporated into a splendid storyline that will set off all the reading senses.
Many readers will be pleased and thankful that Karly decided to self publish this tale as it may have ended up at the bottom of the pile discarded but we can all cheer as I can highly recommend you get your hands on a copy.
I can feel a sequel……..

As a huge fan of Karly Lane's rural fiction, I was very excited at the news of her first foray into contemporary fiction! Accidentally Working Class is such a fun and relevant read!

Socialite Quinn Appleton is used to having everything served to her on a silver platter. She's not only one of the heiresses to the family business (a biscuit company no less- how Aussie!), Quinn's also pretty self centred as well. There's no doubt that Princess Quinn needs one heck of a reality check!

It's Christmas when we meet the Appleton family, headed by matriarch Grandma Elizabeth. Fed up with her family's lack of work ethics, she quite ruins the celebrations by cutting everyone off!

If Quinn thought that this horrid news was the least of her issues, she's in for one ruder shock! In order to reinstate her trust fund, she needs to work for the family business! Naive Quinn thinks that she will be working at the top of the chain... But is placed on the factory floor instead!

So that no-one can ever find out who she is, Quinn Appleton becomes Amy Sinclair. This change of identity is EVERYTHING Quinn needed to become a better person. It's wonderful to see the positive changes Quinn makes to her life over the course of the book!

Of course it wouldn't be a Karly Lane novel without a romantic interest! We are treated to not just one, but two suitors for Quinn/Amy! Our knights in shining armour are Hugo- multi millionaire surf business entrepreneur and Scott- Quinn's flatmate who's quite irritating at first but manages to win everyone over in the end! Poor Quinn is attracted to both men- but who's the better choice for her in the long run? It's impossible to align myself to just one team!

Just LOVE and appreciate that the setting was my home area of the Gold Coast, and recognised quite a few locations that I once frequented!! It's true about Millionaires Row- Hedges Ave in Mermaid Beach is a real place and the homes are STUNNING! Thanks Karly for bringing me home temporarily with this gorgeous book!

Accidentally Working Class by Karly Lane is a rather convoluted story of a matriarch stripping her family of their trust funds because she’s tired of their shenanigans. Honestly, I wonder at her patience. Had these spoiled and unlikable people been part of my family, I wouldn’t have waited as long as the matriarch did.

The family member we follow is Quinn. She spends frivolously, has limited (possibly no) skills, and tries desperately to stay with a fairly repulsive boyfriend even after her grandmother shows Quinn that he’s a cheater. I can’t tell if the author intended for Quinn to disregard the cheating or if she missed the change during revisions. It’s written inconsistently, which is annoying, to say the least.

Quinn’s father is a gambling addict who has lost everything. It turns out that Quinn’s car (a birthday present from Dad) was actually a leased company car. When Grandma cuts them all off, she takes back the car. Now, maybe I’m alone in this, but I have actual stuff in my car that I would want Grandma to let me get before she towed my car. It’s not like the car was repossessed, right? So, that’s weird but maybe it’s just me.

Anyway, Quinn is basically homeless. So, what does she do? She goes to a party and is publicly humiliated because she can’t run a tab, her cards are declined, and of course she has no cash. It’s hard to see how someone this shallow and foolish can – in 6 months (as Grandma requires) – completely turn her life around, become a caring human being capable of managing a budget and working a regular job like the rest of us poor working class losers.

Grandma puts a disguised Quinn to work in the family cookie manufacturing plant. But somehow, she manages to make it work for her. She develops a community with other employees and works hard at her job. This latter half of the book isn’t bad except that it’s really hard to believe a spoiled rich girl can learn to function (including riding public transportation), budget, cook that quickly.

It's difficult to be poor. To minimize the work involved in scraping together enough to survive is disrespectful to all of the people working multiple jobs just to make rent. Quinn's no hero because she magically figures it out.

Quinn’s dad goes missing. Her mom moves in with a boyfriend. Her cousin marries the ex-boyfriend. All of this leads to a mishmashed ending to tie up all the various stories. It moves very quickly and is more than a little hard to believe. And the romance – let’s not forget this is a romance novel – is not even secondary; it’s tertiary to the rest of the story.

Overall, I give this a big meh. It was okay but I won’t be reading it again.

I received a digital ARC from NetGalley in exchange for my honest review.

I should like this book. I love the concept. It is something of a draw to see a person change and the way the arc works itself out. In this case, however, I was in the minority. I did not grow to like Quinn or the changes that happened in her life. Most other people who have read it have liked it, and that is something to be taken into account since that might also mean that many others might enjoy it more than I did.
Quinn is rich and from a prestigious family. From the very first page, as she ushers her smarmy boyfriend into the grand family home for Christmas celebrations, I felt she had a very selective view of the world. I hoped to be proved wrong, but she did not especially rise above all the rest of her family as they are all tested by the grandmother.
The setup is very enticing since so much can occur within the framework of a family being distanced from the money that they freely spend on a regular basis. The overall family affair was well done. I would have given it yet another star if I had warmed up to the one person we follow throughout the entire misadventure.
Quinn is sent to work under a disguised name at the family company (yet another trope I enjoy) and uses that time to learn about the 'average person' who might be a dedicated employee of the Biscuit company. The work atmosphere and the eventual bonding between the people introduced to us, and the fallout at the reveal were well done.
There is an extra twist thrown in, which was extremely unexpected and added a bit of drama to the storyline.
The author's writing was well done, and she managed to keep me hooked till the end, even with all my reservations. I will definitely pick another book by her if I get the chance.
As mentioned earlier, I think this would work for most readers of this genre.
I received an ARC thanks to NetGalley and the publishers, but the review is based on my own reading experience.

Unfortunately as much as I tried I just couldn't get into this book. I think the storyline was great but for some reason it just fell short with me. I think I would have enjoyed it more if Quinn was a likeable character as the humour was there and it could have been fantastic. Thank you netgalley and the publisher for this ARC in exchange for my honest opinion.

Appletons are like the Kardashians, always in the public eye, surrounded by controversies and a couple of members with enough botox and BBLs. The only difference being that the Appletons have a hundred and seventy-year-old biscuit company and a highly disappointing matriarch.

Lazy Elizabeth Appleton has given a considerable amount of her life to the company and its legacy; however, seeing her younger generations pull that very name through the mud, she decided to take a stern action.

On the Christmas dinner, she announced that she’ll be cutting off everyone’s trust funds indefinitely, till the point everyone proves that they are worth that money.

Among the alleged ‘victims’, there is Quinn Appleton, Elizabeth’s granddaughter who is famous for her constant affairs, lavish lifestyle and yes, a lot of partying. With all of her money cut off, will she be able able to keep up with her lifestyle or she’ll be finding her as an accidentally working class?

Rating: 4.5/5
Verdict: Contemporary, clever, with lots of humor, and an eventual lesson of life for all the readers.

✍️ This is the story of bubbly socialite Quinn Appleton. Born into an esteemed and affluent Family in the biscuit making empire and living a life of opulence she soon discovers that matriarch and CEO of the family Grandmother "Lady Elizabeth" has disinherited them all financially. She is given an ultimatum in order to restore her money she will need to take a job at the company for six months under a false identity.

My goodness I ABSOLUTELY ADORED this book. It was delightful and charming and very well written. I couldn't put it down. Highly recommend picking up a copy!! The premise of the story was chic and lively. The characters were a blend of genial, surly and thrilling. It was filled with humour, romance, drama, peril, secrecy. I was kept in suspense and awe the whole way through. A cleverly crafted rom -com story with a touch of menace.

What a fantastic escapism book.
Quinn Appleton’s socialite world is turned upside down when her grandmother cuts off all the family financial allowances, as she is unimpressed with their behaviour. But she does offer Quinn work in the family biscuit factory, with the proviso that Quinn becomes Amy Sinclair and starts at the bottom. If she can stick at for 6 months, her inheritance can be reinstated.
I just loved seeing Quinn/Amy grow as she reassesses her life and friends. This had a bit of everything from rom com, dislike to attraction, suspense.
It was a very easy read and had me turning the pages late into the night and left me in a happy place.
Thank you to Netgalley for a copy to read.

Accidentally Working Class by Karly Lane was an entertaining read, full of twists and turns and some sneaky surprises. The story comprised many likeable characters and events that enthralled from one chapter to the next.

Quinn's character metamorphosis was interesting and her antics were a stand out. So too many other characters in the story have their own revelations, further adding to the story's gripping elements and telling moments. The character interactions were impressive and far from dull, and it was heart-warming how Quinn shows spunk and heart in her old versus new persona and life struggles throughout the story.

In all, Accidentally Working Class is another stand-out story by author Karly Lane.

Karly Lane has been a long time favourite author of mine so when I heard she was momentarily step way from rural romance and releasing a contemporary fiction novel I was super keen to read it.

And let me just say what a novel, it was brilliant. It was a funny entertaining read with an unexpected twist. There was just so much to love!

When Socialite Quinn Appleton’s Gran, Lady Elizabeth Appleton, cut her dysfunctional family off, all hell broke loose.

Quinn however is given an ultimatum by her Gran she’s to work six months in the family business and she’ll gain back her trust fund.

I just loved that her Gran was able to see past the covers of the gossip magazines and could see Quinn’s potential as opposed to the rest of her children and grandchildren.

What happens when the matriarch of a rich business empire reaches the end of her tether and cuts off all her children and grandchildren? Drama, that's what! Lane's foray into a contemporary fiction (with a splash of romance and suspense) is largely a success. Trying to make a spoilt rich brat main character likeable is hard, but she manages to do it with Quinn. I thoroughly enjoyed her fall from grace and the wake-up call she gets when forced to suddenly join the working class and earn her own money at a job in her own family's biscuit factory.
It was a very easy read, nothing to bog you down and I enjoyed the Gold Coast setting. I loved the romance subplot/s and thought the characters were great throughout.
I only guessed the twist at the last minute, it was a great way to wrap up the plot though things really escalated very quickly from "worried about my dad" to "life in dire danger".
Recommend if you're looking for a fun Aussie fiction.
FYI the romance is closed door.

A very enjoyable weekend, summer, vacation, reading kind of book.

I went in knowing nothing, and hoping it wouldn't be too Schitt's Creeky because there are too many books who have been trying to do that in the past two years and they are either amazing or awful. This read falls perfectly into the mix of a great weekend read. I enjoyed Quinn, and while at first she is a little off putting, its the character back story and must be part of the way she is developed into this other person.

Definitely go into this read for a fun easy time with a quirky bunch of characters. Not going to lie, I hope there is a second book.

Such a cute, sweet book. Accidentally working class is about Quinn Appleton, a young socialite who ends up losing everything at a family Christmas dinner. Gran, who runs the family with a bit of an iron fist, ends up canceling their inheritances and company cards due to embarrassing the family and damaging the family name with their shenanigans. Gran decides to come up with a compromise for Quinn. If she can work for the family company for six months without no-one knowing who she is, her inheritance is reinstate. The book also has intrigue, danger, and hyjinxes a plenty. I have received this ARC from Netgalley for a fair and honest review.

I really wanted to like this book as Karlys work is normally really good but i really struggled with this one. It was hard to like Quinn who is a spoiled brat with no idea on how the world works or how to be nice. She expected everything and never though of anyone else. She worked only because she had to. She met a really nice person but didnt know how to treat him or let him in. It wasnt til the last 50 pages that she started to redeem herself. I think she chose the wrong man too.

Personal opinion it would have been a better read if she wasnt such a spoiled brat for so much of the story

Thank you to NetGallery and the published for a copy of the ARC.

I thought this was enjoyable as a summer reading book. I'm always intrigued when reading about a character that's totally different from myself. In this case a poor little rich girl, Quinn Appleton, who's trust fund gets taken away from her so she has to work like the rest of us. She was annoying and spoiled and the beginning of the book was definitely a little slow, but an okay read indeed.

Has anyone seen the Disney Channel move, Cow Belles, with Aly & AJ? This is what the book kind of reminded me of.

The Appleton family are Australian royalty - wealthy and in all the social pages, but lately for all the wrong reasons. Quinn Appleton spends her days and nights living the good life, with no real purpose, yet it’s the life she is accustomed to … until it’s all taken away from her!
Elizabeth Appleton, queen and matriarch of the Appleton’s brand is sick of the family’s disrespect of their heritage and being in the spotlight for outrageous behaviour, as a result Elizabeth cuts off the family allowances and trust funds, with Quinn suddenly finding herself broke and needing a job.
Her grandmother gives Quinn a job in one of their biscuit factories, also changing her name and glamorous appearance, so she can work incognito. Quinn, or Amy as she is now known as, finds herself flatting with a quirky bunch of characters and travelling by bus to work everyday, where she meets an eclectic group of fun and loyal workmates. Something she did not envision herself finding back in her socialite days!

Karly Lane has written Accidentally Working Class with humour and depth. I enjoyed reading as Quinn’s spoilt brat demeanour was slowly unravelled. Quinn, as Amy Sinclair showed her true inner self, strong, a fighter and independent with loyalty to those she loves. There is a bit of suspense that had me turning the pages to see how it would all play out, and a romance that has it’s own twists and turns. Primarily though, this is Quinn’s story of self-awareness and discovery of who she really is.

Thanks to the author for sending me a copy of this book to read. I enjoyed it a lot!

Loved it! Absolutely loved it. I am a Karly Lane fan and this is a little different from many of her books but it is beautiful. Wonderfully written characters, some you love others you loathe and the way the story fits together is excellent. Definitely one of the best books I've read for some time and I've read quite a few. Karly Lane fans will adore this and Australian literature lovers will find much to enjoy.

Socialite Quinn has never really worried about anything except what to wear to the next party. The Christmas she reluctantly brings her new boyfriend to meet the family is disastrous in more ways than one. Bryson reveals himself not only to be gold digger, but tears off with Quinn's mean cousin. If that was not humiliating enough, Gran, the matriarch of the family revokes everyone's access to the company money until they can prove they are invested in the company. With no money, no friends, no family, and no other choices, Quinn moves into a house share and begins working incognito in the family company.

Even though this book has a predictable plot line, it was much better than I expected. The character development throughout the whole story was realistic and well-crafted. I was looking for a light chick-lit read when I selected this book, and it is one I will recommend to friends who enjoy Sophie Kinsella and Meg Cabot. I can't wait to read more by this author!
