Laying Claim

Rate this book
Seth Richards

24, twink, professional sleuth… Okay, semi-professional helping out a friend.

“It’s perfectly safe! Sit in a bar, have a few beers, report anything suspicious.” Simple enough, right? Then why the heck am I sitting here tied to a chair, about to have my face beaten in by some scary-looking Irish dude? Also, why am I surprisingly attracted to his boss? That’s probably something I should unpack with my therapist at some point…

Mickey O’Brien

31, Irish, professional thug… oh ya, and I’m next in line to take over the O’Brien crime syndicate once my old man kicks the bucket.

There’s something about him. His vulnerability, his fear, the way he puts on a brave face even though he’s secretly terrified. Watching him verbally tear into a thug double his size has me impressed. I want to hold him, protect him, and claim him as my own. But how can I? When you’re next in line to lead a criminal organization there are certain… expectations.

But for now, I have more important things to worry about, like who’s hunting down members of my crew?

*** I reviewed a complimentary copy of this book***

Laying Claim is an entertaining romantic suspense combined with an opposite attract love story between Mickey, an Irish mobster and Seth, a part-time sleuth and student. Both have no reason to interact with one another, but due to the right time and place both cross paths and the rest is history.

Mickey is a hardworking mobster with a heart of gold. He protects those he feels are unjustly targeted, which makes him immediately drawn to Seth, who is unapologetic about his sexuality. Seth is investigating a recent string of deaths, which puts him into direct contact with Mickey.

Even though they both come from different worlds, both have an intense connection and fantastic immediate chemistry. Even though they are polar opposites it doesn't change that they are it for one another and seeing how their HEA is possible in this difficult world was such a joy to see.

Overall I loved this story and getting to see familiar faces as well. This is a great first entry in a new series that I cannot wait to see more of. Mickey's best friend, Patrick left a particularly great impression and I would love to see more from him.

pity, I was looking forward to this but there was too much prelude that I already lost interest in the story. I also didn’t like the writing at all, as well as the description of Seth, the "young slender twink“ with "gay genes“ and an obv "gay force“ to dance to a certain artist’s songs.

Nope, sorry but I’m done.

DNF @ 7%. This is a poorly edited cringefest.

Random use of punctuation, random capitalization, being told the same thing multiple times in different ways, Seth’s “gay fierceness” and being introduced to a stranger by saying “your boobies are his kryptonite”.

Opposite attraction: on one side, a mobster who wants to do right, on the other, a young man who reacts even when is afraid.
The chemistry is off the chart and the romance entwines with mystery.
Awesome!

DNF 12% No rating but really should be a 1 star at this point.

I feel like I read a completely different book than some of my GR friends. I was about to DNF at 5%. But I pushed through thinking I was being overly critical. And now at 12% I can safely say, it’s the book, not me.

Seriously, where are all the good editors at? The ones who not only correct punctuation but also help tighten up a manuscript? The ones who advise about not saying 50 words when 5 will do?? The old school ones who go through with a big red pen and suggest deletions, alterations, corrections?
And where are all the beta readers who actually give constructive feedback to authors?

Maybe they all did and this author just didn’t listen. Well, it’s their book, I suppose.

I really don’t know what to say about this other than it comes across to me like the author thinks readers can’t put two and two together. Over-explanatory. Repetitive. I was constantly reading one thing only for it to be explained again in the next paragraph.

There’s also a high cringe factor with the way the MC are portrayed.
As Seth watched the sexy dancers and flashing lights, he couldn’t help but feel his gay fierceness struggling to set herself free. Slowly his legs began to twitch, then his hips began to roll. Next thing he knew his shoulders were flying back as his gay fierceness took control. The gay force was strong with this one.

“Ashanta, this is my “gay in training”, and sweet friend, Seth! He has the biggest hardon for you. But don’t worry, this little twinkie plays for my team, and has a bad case of sausage addiction, so you don’t have to worry about him trying to sleep with you. Your boobies are his kryptonite!”
This isn’t for me but there’s plenty of 4/5 stars so YMMV.

A very enjoyable read! Matthew Dante hooked me in and made me love this from the beginning. As much as I’m a fan of slow-burn romances, I’m also a fan of insta-love and I adored Mickey & Seth’s interaction throughout the book. Their characters were realistic for the world they live in, both had weaknesses but I loved that together they complimented each other. There was a bit of angst but not overly done, perfect for the flow of the story, It offered some very surprising twists that had me turning pages so fast. Can’t wait for the next book in the series.

Ah, this was so frickin good!! I absolutely love a good opposites attract story. With it being one of my favourite tropes. Laying Claim centres around Mickey, a hardworking, passionate man who fiercely protects his loved ones and those around him. Born into the unforgiving world of the Irish Mob, and The Underboss to the O' Brien crime syndicate.

After a trio of dead bodies turn up, all with connections to the O'Brien crew. MIckey suspects they're being framed..... In walks Seth, at 24 years old he is a professional sleuth. Did I say professional? I use that term loosely.

" … 𝙖𝙡𝙡 𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙨𝙚 𝙩𝙧𝙖𝙜𝙞𝙘 𝙖𝙘𝙘𝙞𝙙𝙚𝙣𝙩𝙨 𝙬𝙚𝙧𝙚 𝙨𝙩𝙖𝙧𝙩𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙩𝙤 𝙡𝙤𝙤𝙠 𝙡𝙚𝙨𝙨 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙡𝙚𝙨𝙨 𝙡𝙞𝙠𝙚 𝙖𝙘𝙘𝙞𝙙𝙚𝙣𝙩𝙨 𝙖𝙩 𝙖𝙡𝙡."

As these two find themselves in the crossfire whilst trying to get to the bottom of the goings-on, their chemistry becomes dynamite! I literally swooned so hard for these two. Matthew wove this story with perfection, bringing the grizzly details and underbelly of the mob to light. I was completely engrossed from the beginning to end! There was mystery, suspense and some seriously steamy scenes with an allure that was electric. Also some comically brilliant moments and banter.

To top that all off we get some interlaced characters from his previous books! Matthew Dante literally spoiled us rotten with Laying Claim and I'm going to be burning with the anticipation for the next in this series.

I loved this. Loved the banter loved the love. This was a good mob hurt comfort story. Two lonely men, finding love in each other. There was a good suspense. I do wish there was more them time. We didn’t get that, and I wish we got to see Mickey hang out with friends more. Writing was good, smexy was nice, want to know more about Paddy, Dom and a few others

love this series

This is book 1 of the Rough edges series and this one is about Mickey and Seth.

Mickey is part of the Irish jersey underbelly, family and his crew are what he lives for, he protects the people he cares about even if that means hurting others to prove his point! Him and Patrick are not to be messed with but when 3 of his crew members end up dead under suspicious circumstances it’s time to do some digging!!

Mickeys dad is old school and believes in the old way of life where women are here to serve men and men loving men is a big fat not happening! But Mickeys done a good job hiding the fact that he’s into men too until Seth gets caught on the business cctv snooping!!

Seth has left his parents not on good terms, he’s taken a side job of helping out a friend to find out why 3 locals have died, he’s snooping and gets caught, this is it, is he gonna die, or will he be saved by a big Irish brute?

I love this series so much, the second book is just as amazing, all the side characters are great and I can’t wait to read about Patrick!

This book has hurt/comfort, humour and one liners, lots of spice with a side of torture!!

There are trigger warnings please read if your sensitive to them.

ARC received in exchange for honest review:
Yes!!!! this book was everything I hoped for and more and I am so excited to see where this series goes. I do highly recommend you read the fractured series before this so you have more insight and experience this book on another level (and also because it’s brilliant). However, this new series can be a standalone too.

Seth is a fierce and lovable twink who shouldn’t be underestimated, and Mickey is a sexy, dark and possessive Irish mob leader who we all want in our bed too.

This story is just brilliant, it’s a dark insight to the criminal family world with a lot of story and a lot of bite, you can feel the drama and intensity of the world around them and it’s intoxicating. Matthew is genius with how he has subtly linked this to his last series, it’s absolutely seamless.

Seth and Mickey together are like fire on the page. They are so different but both have this inner loyalty and determination to protect those they love, it’s hot as hell and so engaging.

There were moments I swooned, a scene that I felt emotional about, and there were also stand out moments where I find myself chuckling. It had a bit of everything and I just cannot wait to see more. There are so many background characters I hope to see again as they each bring something to the story. Fabulously written, brilliantly paced and chemistry that’s explosive. Highly recommend.

What could be sexier than the heir to an Irish mob? Nothing!

Mickey is a different sort of mob boss. It’s still a rough life, but he’s a man who loves his found family and wants to carve something meaningful from what his family began. Maybe things don’t have to remain as they have been with his father running the show?

Seth is a sweet ray of sunshine who just wants to be loved. While he can stand up for himself when he needs to, it’s adorable when certain sons of mob bosses are drawn to care for him and are just drawn to him in general. Seth is earnest and you’ll want to wrap him in a blanket and squeeze him too (if Mickey lets you).

Mickey and Seth are epic fire together. I loved how much they both owned the other.

This manages to be an achingly genuine romance while murder and mayhem ensues around them. Every character has a deep backstory. You’ll be pulled into their lives and swept away into the mystery.

(And P.S. We need Patrick to find love next, because six feet of muscle and smolder-y-ness can’t stay in this one book thank you very much)

Awesome start to this new series!!!

I've been following this author for a looong while and have several of his books downloaded. Now I've finally read one...and it definitely won't be the last as I love this book and I can't wait to read the new one that just came out today, Protecting His, Book 2 in the series.

This series is a spin off from the Fractured Series but it did not hinder my reading experience at all by not having read that series yet. It did however make me want to read it as well though. One of our mc's, Seth, is from that series while the other mc, Mickey, is a part of the Irish mafia.

Even though Seth is a few years younger and working his way through school and Mickey is a harder mob boss, they just fit. Both had insecurities and a need for acceptance and trust. Thankfully their desire to be loved and the hot chemistry they had for each other couldn't be deterred.

I loved the banter not just between the mc's but all the side characters as well. That plus the "edge of your seat" suspense and steamy af scenes kept you pulled into the story wanting more. I can't wait to see where Matthew takes this series and who all will get their own hea!!!

As always make sure you check the CW'S/TW's.

Ps. I loved that Mickey's best friend Patrick supported and encouraged them in their relationship.

It was good. I loved how Mickey would do anything to spoiled and cherished Seth and how Seth could knocked down the wall surrounding Mickey's heart. This book was worth 4 stars but too bad there were 2 things I hate the most. Number one, a detailed scene when Seth was involved in threesome while Mickey witnessed it. Number two, when Mickey did involved in threesome but thank God with no details unlike Seth's threesome scene. Even though they were acted on it before their had feelings for each other, it still annoyed me and the violence in this book was kinda high.

Dominic's story is next. I hope I can enjoy it too!

From the “Fractured” series with Marc and Alex, Matthew Dante creates a new series with Seth Richards from book three “Fractured Souls”.

Seth Richards was a newcomer to Alex’s small group of friends. As much as Marc hated doing the “social thing” he still went along because of Alex. Seth is kind of naive when it came to his crush on Mark and Alex had to straighten Seth out. But the three have become good friends. Seth still has boyfriend issues, he just doesn’t have the confidence and he still thinks he drives potential boyfriends away, like Ivan. Watching Eve and James and Alex and Mark leave Seth wanting to have that type of love and committed relationship.

Marc becomes intrigued about three strange deaths involving an Irish mob. He and Alex call on Seth to gather some intel on the situation. Seth’s been studying to be a private investigator and has already done some work for Marc. Seth is pretty stoked about this because anything Marc contracts him for just gives him real experience.

Seth get’s caught at one of the establishments of the New Jersey Irish mob. Little does he realize it’s not the first time Michele “Mickey” O’Brien has laid eyes on him. Mickey is head of the Irish crew in Jersey. He’s next in line for taking over his father’s position. Mickey want’s to implement new ideas for his crew and what they can do to further protect the people and their community.

There’s already a chemistry building between the feisty Seth and Mickey. But along the way there’s an abundance of ups and downs. Mickey can’t bring himself to commit. He’s faced the reality of being head of his crew and the danger that can come to those around him. As one more tragic death hits Mickey, will Seth and Marc be able to come up with a plan to end the evil that could destroy them all.

“Rough Edges” is a really good spin-off from the “Fractured” series. Marc and Alex still take a part in this but it’s very much Seth’s story. Matthew Dante draws an in-depth picture of both Mickey and Seth. Their various feelings, concerns and dreams are laid out. We hear more about Seth’s life and the betrayal and estrangement with his parents. Mickey O’Brien brings his French and Irish heritage. His love for his mother Sofia Devoius and his ties with the Irish mob through his father, Clive O’Brien.

Even though it’s the Irish mob, the crew itself is a mix of ethnicities: Patrick, Dominic, Brody, Rian, Shawn, and Ian. I like Joe Murphy who brings it all together for the crew. I can’t go without mentioning Marc and Alex. I hope they continue to be part of this series. Marc, especially, finds some odd and strange cases to the table.

I like the potential for this new series “Rough Edges”. “Laying Claim” has lot’s of steamy moments, with mystery, suspense, comradeship, danger and action. Can’t wait to hear who Matthew Dante has in mind for the next installment. For Anna, you captured Mickey perfectly for the cover design!

Oh boy!! The suspense!! This thing is a gripping, page-turning, nail-biting story with a healthy dose of mystery that kept me on edge.

The main characters are completely different personalities. One is rough and bossy and the other one gentle and soft. They have something common though. They both are caring. And they will both go to extremes to make sure people who care about are safe.

In this book the author gave us an idea of how people can be hostile and honestly jerks when they come across gay people. They are willing to call them names and even beat them, but I just can't wrap my head around that. Why can't they respect that everyone is different and that it's on them to decide who they'll love. Why be such a piece of shit?

I see why Mickey, the bossy Irish lad, had a difficulty to open up and talk about his feelings for Seth to people around him. People around him are bullies! Thank fuck Patrick is an exception. This man is so supportive and helps them realize that they can work through their challenges if they are together.

And I agree. These two will face challenges. They will come across obstacles. They already did. They can't control what they'll face but they can control how they respond to them. And this is more powerful than they think.

I loved how the author escalated the suspense and action throughout the story. I felt like I couldn't breathe because I didn't know what was about to happen.

And Seriously. That purple dust thing that caused all this chaos..what is this thing? My heart almost stopped when I read that scene between Seth, Mickey and the intruder.

A huge WHAT!!!? came out of me and I held my breath until it was safe enough to believe that they got this. *Sigh*

Come on Matthew! Don't scare me like that man 😩

So here I am loving another book of this man! This was so good in all the best ways. I love some good smutt in my thriller/suspense reads and he definitely delivered! It didn't overpower everything else but it was still hot. Please don't sleep on this author 🖤

Loved it🥰🥰🥰

Matthew Dante does not disappoint in this brand new spin off from the FRACTURED series and delivers his signature adictive dark romance, with a trilling twist of danger and a large dollop of lust.🖤

Mickey will take your breath away, as he is charismatic, dangerous and hot AF🤩 This sex on legs, had my full attention from page one and I just had to follow his every move. He did not disappoint and took me on some pretty sexy adventures 🖤 His character transformation was the greatest as he had to figure out his own priorities and values, before he was able to choose a side and finally make a move in the right direction.🖤

In comes Seth and he is just perfection🖤 We first meet young adorable Mr. Richards in FRACTURED SOUL and oh boy was it easy to fall in love with this charming character 🖤 In this story, he has been tasked by Mark and Alex, to dive deep into the shady criminal world of NJ and find out why several members of the O’Brien Irish Crime family are targeted and killed off under brutal and suspicious circumstances 🖤

Put those two together and you have one explosive combination of desire, deceit, reckless abandonment and murder.🤩

This story touches on a lot of issues concerning sexuality and homophobia. Obviously this is a work of fiction, but the themes are important and valid, and i love that Matthew Dante uses his platform to bring these topics to light and encourage the conversation around them.🖤 I must say, I am absolutely in love with the fluid vibes in this book and the gorgeous way the characters were depicted in the intimate scenes. There was so much steam and emotion, breathtaking passion and sweetness between Seth and Mickey.🖤

Special mention for my favourite baby Patrick 🖤 I can't wait to read more about this fantastic beast🖤

Lots of fun cameos from Alex, Mark and Eve🤩 Absolutely adore all the scenes of night-life, clubs, party activities 🤩 Mathew Dante sets a party scene like no other, and I was half slipping my shoes on, thinking I should go out tonight as he is making me miss partying and clubs🤩

I absolutely loved it! 🖤

BR with my favorite Jersey girl Amy @bookworm.247_

Mickey’s the heir to the Irish mafia in Jersey City. From page one we’re hit in the face with Mickey’s father Clive’s homophobia as he beats one of his men for being caught with another man.

So, it’s no wonder Mickey isn’t too open about his bisexuality in any aspect of his life, but in the privacy of his bedroom.

He spies Seth whom he describes as a ‘young slender twink’ who’s being harassed by one of his men. He puts a stop to it and later has his right hand man Paddy beat some good manners into the harasser.

This one is heavy in the ‘man’s man’ mafia style which is to be expected. I enjoyed the suspense aspect with the mysterious suicides. I wish we had more of a background on how Seth ended up working for Marc, and what a fascinating character he is.

I liked the growth, the back and forth between Mickey and Seth. The chemistry was almost there, just needed a few extra oomphs of emotions thrown into the mix.

Overall an entertaining story with a good mix of interesting characters.

🖤Action, romance, and suspense 🖤

I was lucky enough to read an ARC copy of Laying Claim by Matthew Dante, and let me tell you, what a thrilling and steamy ride! 🔥
The story line kept me intrigued throughout the book, and I definitely didn’t see that ending coming…🤯

Mickey’s character was such a pleasant surprise for me. I was expecting him to be more of a rough character due to being in the Irish Mob, but he was such a lovable and kind man. The way he cared for his “family” and community was endearing and made me love him! 🥰❤️

Seth’s character can be perfectly explained by this quote from Mickey—“there was so much happiness and spirit in him. He was that ray of sunshine that burst through the storm clouds in a gloomy sky. You couldn’t help but smile and feel good in his presence.” I also adored his sass and how he stood his own against Patrick.

Speaking of Patrick…can we get a book with him as well?? 🥵🥵🥵

Overall, I LOVED this book! If you enjoyed the Fractured series, you also get some Alex and Marc in this book, yum yum!! ❤️🌈

This is a great start to this series. It has everything, romance, mystery, humor, snark, opposites and the list can just keep going on.
Mickey is next in line to take over from his dad as leader of the O’Brien crime syndicate but it isn’t something he has really wanted. It is all he knows though because his dad has been training him since he was really young. Mickey doesn’t have the hard personality of his dad. He can be strong when the need is there but he has a conscience. Mickey would like to take the business in a more legitimate path. Then he meets Seth.
Seth is so different. Even when he is afraid, he puts forth an attitude. He can’t stop himself from saying what is on his mind and sometimes it is enough to get him in real trouble. Seth has no problem being snarky with Mickey. This attitude made me laugh a few times. Mickey is taken with Seth but he has to keep up a front of power and that doesn’t include being gay. Their relationship has more than a few obstacles. There is a age difference. Seth is out and wants a long term relationship. Mickey is bi and wants to keep his gay part in the closet. I really enjoyed the characters. They both, in their own way, are so lovable. I liked the constant flow of the story. It held my attention from the beginning. I’m anxious for the next story.

Suspenseful and Funny

This is my first time reading this author and I loved his character Seth. He was a fiesty, struggling college guy with a found family who is asked by one of them to help look into the deaths of 3 mafia guys who suddenly died. While doing surveillance he is caught and brought to the "basement" where he is roughed up. He can't help but be snarky even knowing he may be killed. When his hood is removed, he meets Mickey, the Irish boss, and the adventure begins. Mickey is intrigued by Seth's bravery and decides he wants to protect him and claim him. Together they try to figure out who killed Mickey's men while falling for each other. There is plenty of humor and quite the cast of characters who hopefully get their own book. Seth and Mickey get their HEA and there is an epilogue which makes me happy. I'm going to highly recommend this book.

This book was so much fun! It has the Irish mob, a mystery, devious deeds, and the ruthless yet cinnamon roll heir to the mob and the sweet but smart man that catches his eye.

There were moments that made me laugh and smile, but I was also captivated by the world Matthew created, it felt very realistic in a fantastic way and throughout it all a compelling story as they trace the mysterious deaths of members of their crew.

While it takes place in the New Jersey underground, it also had a lot of heart and had some swoony moments.

There's just something about a killer who gives his whole heart to someone and will do anything for them 😍😍

I loved the peeks at Alex and Marc too, now I really need to read their story.

A Criminal with a Heart of Gold

Mickey is a perfect example of what I call the not-so-bad-guy. He may be the next in line to be the head of the Irish mafia, but he has a heart of gold when it comes to his people.

Seth may not be what many people would see as a strong person, but his bravery is admirable. When he is caught watching known mafia locations, he doesn't crack. Luckily, he doesn't have to worry because Mickey has his eye on Seth.

I really enjoyed this book, especially once Seth and Mickey grew closer. I will say there are a couple of slurs at the beginning of the story, so heads up on that. Otherwise its a great romance.

Recommended!

Wow. This book needs an editor. The author needs to work on dialogue and research archetypes a lot more. Grammar, spelling, the art of showing vs telling are also skills that need to be acquired for a book to be taken seriously.

This felt a bit rushed but overall a good suspense romance novel. This is my first novel by this author. I wish it was just a bit more drawn out which is the 4 rating overall though it was sexy with a decent aspect of mystery.

Full of Suspense!!

Can I just say…WOW!! I love books that are full of suspense and still have that edge of romance without being overly fluffy. This is a good book. A very good start to a series!!

In one corner, we have Mickey a man torn between being his true self and living his life as the heir apparent in the New Jersey Irish Mob. Seth is a struggling student with a found family trying to make ends meet and find his soul mate. These two men are going to rock each other’s worlds in the best ways and I’m so glad I FINALLY read this book. Now I’m off to bed after I download book two Protecting His: Rough Edges to read after I finish adulting tomorrow!!
