In Tao of Thoreau, Mark J. Bozeman matches up passages from Henry David Thoreau's Walden with quotations and concepts from the writings of Lao-tzu, Chuang-tzu and others. The importance to Mr. Bozeman of joining the excerpts and ideas from the two sources--the practice of uniting them to amplify and clarify their meanings--is what shines through here. Bozeman has made here something crucial for himself, to help him find connections and understanding in the ideas and works of authors that matter to him. We, readers of this, are the beneficiaries of his care and insight. Tao of Thoreau is a work to read and ponder; to take from it whatever resonates and follow on your own, through readings of Walden or The Tao or wherever.

Thoreau has been one of my inspirations for more than fifty years. He was brilliant, but for modern readers, he may be a struggle to read. By following quotes from Thoreau with thoughts and passages from Taoist thinkers he is made easier to understand. Bozeman has done an excellent job. The basic message is that we should live a simple life, not be sidetracked by possessions and excess comforts, and live in Nature as much as possible. The Tao is mysterious but not unattainable. A supply of good advice will be a great aid and comfort to your journey.
