A beautifully imperfect story about life, love, and a little bit of vampires.
Darius Freeman lives in a reality where vampires are 99% of the population and everything is created to keep them happy. As a human he has to donate blood every month in exchange for being a protected species. Although humans are physically safe by the laws they are a lower class and have to navigate a world that is not built for them anymore.
While Darius is working his 9pm-5am job he meets a human that has signed up to convert. Once she is a vampire though she will lose her ability to love, feel empathy, and care about anyone other than herself. She agrees to let Darius remind her of everything she would miss out on. Will she choose to give away her life in the end? Why does she want to become a vampire? What would you choose?
"Most of this story had this warm sort of searching vibe to it, with harsh realities and trauma mixed in. The tone would go from a type of motherly love to feelings of hopelessness or injustice. The variety of emotions is part of what makes this book almost feel melancholy and bittersweet in the way of a classic story such as Romeo and Juliet." - Kyare Betzing Editor of Chasing Humanity
A poignant, heartfelt story that delves into the timeless question of what it means to be human. Using vampires as a brilliant allegory for grief & abuse, Langley manages to make a post-apocalyptic story feel all too real. Darius and Aveline were brilliant protagonists whose cozy adventures to remind themselves how good it is to feel and love and hope makes this a perfect read.
I’m a HUGE vampire fan and this is truly a completely unique take on the lore.
The perfectly titled epitome of found family and the saying “it takes a village”.
Chasing Humanity is one of the most emotional reads I’ve read in a while. The last three chapters had me crying so much. I didn’t see the end of Darius’s pov coming, but it fit so perfectly. “An Aimless Walk” was my favorite chapter.
Beyond the wonderful storyline and characters is a message about the importance of community and facing one’s humanity head on disguised as a story about humans surviving amongst vampires.
Features: - Overcoming life challenges - Acceptance - Mental health - Coming together as a community - Narcissistic abuse - Trauma - Self-growth
Exciting read full of community, love, and plot twist. Really enjoyed the book and it left me hoping for a second book. I feel like the characters were easy to get to know and connect with. Worthy of a film version or series one day in my opinion.
I am friends with the author soni might be bias but I thought this was a great little book. If you like found family and community centered stuff I would argue that's what this book primarily is, although it takes a few chapters for that to become clear as it masquerades as a romance at first. I think my only criticism is that I wish there was more book! Lol! I feel like there could have been just a little bit more exploration of the characters and themes that would have bulked it up and made me feel satisfied with it at the end. As is, I was left craving more of it at the end! Although the last chapter was probably my favorite. Anyway, I cant wait for the sequel! ♥️🌟
