Dragon Gate #5

Sky on Fire

Rate this book
The dragons of eld, once benevolent allies to mankind, have been infested by a magical parasite that makes them cruel and aggressive. They’ve flown through the ancient portal to invade Torvil and plan to kill or enslave all of humanity.

If Jak and his allies can’t figure out how to destroy the parasite, a parasite the powerful dragons themselves were helpless to thwart, everyone they care about—everyone in the world—will be doomed.

Dragon Victory

In this fifth installment of Buroker’s Dragon Gate series, the dragons get a foothold on Torvil.
While I appreciated that the simmering romances finally paid off, I read fantasy for the epic story. There were lots of battles, but humans were on the losing side. No surprise. Even mages can’t take down a dragon without plenty of help.
Four stars because the ending was close to being a cliffhanger. There wasn’t a clear story problem that was resolved in a satisfying way by the end of the book. Worse, everyone is left in a catastrophic place.
If you haven’t started this book, you might wait until closer to the release of the final installment to do so. That way, you can avoid the frustration that comes when a story isn’t resolved satisfactorily.

Giving it 3 stars was being generous. This book was 95% filler. Also it had a few inconsistencies like when Uthari got told two people had slept together a couple hundred pages before and *then* was surprised when he read it from one of their minds.

I hope the final book saves it.

I'm so glad this is a SciFi Fantasy! So I feel free to be totally judgmental toward Malek! Just thinking about it makes me sneer at him with contempt! He is such a mindless loyal slave to Uthari to the point that he could kill Jadora & Jax & Shikari whenever Uthari tells him to! And the fact that he won't want to continue living after the deed gets my blood boiling with even more contempt! What a jerk of a hero!

Having ranted to my heart's content (above) has now freed me to enjoy this amazing installment in peace. My favorite scenes are all about Sorath! He's my Hero! Enjoy him & Ferroki together so much! This scene here is breaking my heart: 💔💧

"We are together in it, but. . . "
"Not fondling each other?"
"Dangling from the talons of a dragon."
"Together? That's romantic."

She shook her head. "Injured and being carried off over the sea toward something dark on the horizon. That's where the vision ends. I almost didn't come over here tonight, . . . I was torn. . . if I didn't come, you would be taken and stuck somewhere alone."

"It sounds like a scenario that could only end in my death. If I'm destined to die, I'd rather not take you with me."

"You shouldn't die alone."

Looking forward to the Finale Orbs of Wisdom: An epic fantasy novel September 30th, 2022 🎇

These books are hard to review because I enjoy them enough to get through them but the first 4 books all really struggled to grab me for the first half of every book. This one is better with the book able to generate enough interest to keep me going all throughout but I'm never really rearing to read the book. A large part of this stems, I feel, from the lack of agency that our protagonists, mother son combo Jak and Jadora, have coupled with the dissonance of our other protagonists, Malek and Rivlen, blindly following and putting up with the blatantly monstrous actions of their king as he does one reprehensible thing after another. They seem like good and likeable people but it's really hard to root for them when their response to these atrocities is to basically shrug. At this point in book 5 they are at least pushing back a little bit and trying to undermine his orders but man it's not endearing them to me. If you've made it this far through the series you will probably enjoy this book for the plot developments but as with the other books the plot points feel drawn out and I wonder if each book could benefit from losing 30 % of the pages somewhere.

Listened to audiobook.
The Story Ark is starting to feel long. The same old plot of good guys won't deal with the bad guy is beginning to wear thin. The new threat of dragons roaming the planet feels secondary against the ongoing antics of the king Uthari. Luckily, many side characters are going after the dragons and keeping the plot moving forward.

Utharti is truly a narcissist. Great character build for him by the author. My problem is that when I start rooting for the bad guys I give up the series.

Just trash characters.

Thank god there is only one more book. I'm tired of reading about powerful good people that don't actually use their gifts to effect change. 5 books in, Jax should not be a whimpering naive baby anymore. Jax and his mother trying to save the world from powerful mages and raging dragons thru pacifism is played out. Save your money and skip this book and just read the last one.

There’s been a change in the power dynamic … thanks to a gift from the last adult blue dragon, Jadora has had both dragon knowledge and power imprinted into (onto?) her, making her the most powerful mage on Torvil. She puts it right to work in her lab, working still for Uthari, the despot king. Why she wouldn’t have tested herself against the powers that be, I really don’t know, and I rather wished she had. It wouldn’t have been out of keeping with her character. Missed opportunity, to my mind.

Still, there’s a boatload of action going on in this book as stuff starts to unwind … plots are being derailed all over. This is the chaotic part where authors maniacally laugh and readers wring their hands. As at least three of our characters (two main) were flying off to certain doom at the hands of Uthari, the massed grey dragons put on offensive that decimated the lands and flying cities in the varied kingdoms. Uthari has also pushed a regicide agenda … and Jadora is still working for him in the hopes that he’ll lighten up. Sigh. There’s a bright spot for Jadora though … her relationship with Malek.

This has all the hallmarks of a Buroker book, with the exception of the smart, sassy female lead. Right now, she’s being pretty dumb. We’ll see if she steps it up in the next, last book.

There's only one thing wrong with Lindsay Buroker's books: they all have to come to an end. I finished Sky on Fire last night and all I've been able to think about today is how I want MORE MORE MORE.

If you haven't yet read Dragon Gates #1-4, definitely find and read them first. This is a saga that entangles you in a complex, evolving and branching plot, and makes the characters come to life. I have to admit that I care more about Jak and Jadora and Tevi and Sorath and Rivlen and Ferroki ... and OF COURSE MALEK more than I care about many of my Facebook friends. And that comes from being with them as they face difficult decisions and moral dilemmas in addition to the life-threatening peril that we expect from adventure novels. Buy it for the plot, love it for the people.

I received this book a week early because I'm a supporter of Buroker on Patreon.

Multiple plot lines keep the reader engrossed

The stakes are high for each POV character, and the dragon menace is worsening. The tension ebbs and flows as the situation for each party resolves a bit but then becomes more dire.

Buroker continues to develop each character and his/her relationships. The romance for some builds in passion, and some characters forge better friendships. There are a few characters who die in this installment, but they are not central protagonists.

For readers who take a break between books four and five, the author includes good review information of previous events in the course of this book. The writing continues to be excellent and highly edited.

There is a horrible situation at the end of this book, but there is also hope for a solution and an HEA in the final installment.

Crap... there are actually 6 books. I was just trying to make it through. Uggh...

Well the good news is not only does everyone have the same problem ("I can't possibly date him/her because bad guy said") but they all have the same solution ("never mind we can screw around")

Of course then they all have the same followup problem which is bad guy found out and said "stop"... oh and goodie they're keeping secrets because "if they ever found out they'd hate me"... but (this isn't any sort of a spoiler) the other people find out anyway .... surprise (not).

Good news the blond girl now has a suitor who likes her because she's a fighter who has the same skin tone as him... not just because she's super hot!

This book was pointless. I gave 3 stars because the series is amazing. Book 5 however is not a good reflection of what this series is. There is really no climatic point in the book. We simply read about the characters flying around and running away from dragons. Also all the love interests suddenly come together… we’ve waited 5 books and boom everyone is in love???

Overall this was definitely a filler book and could really have been completed in 200 pages. I hope the last book is up to the author’s usual writing standards.

Sky on Fire

An excellent addition to the series. The strong story line continues nicely. All of the main characters have been developed by now and they act accordingly. The plot has enough twists and turns to satisfy everyone. This is one series that makes you stop everything to read the newest installment. I try not to give spoilers but I have to say I am really glad that one character was killed. Highly recommended.

Best yet

If you've been following the Dragon Gate series, you'll be vastly did. The fifth installment is a series of action packed cliffhangers. Lindsey has outdone herself. There is a lot more character development, which is amazing considering hos many characters there are. You must've read the first four to have a hope of understanding what is happening. I highly recommend the series.

Buroker at her best

I've complained in my other reviews about a lack of villainous presence or stakes in Buroker's books. Sky On Fire bucks that trend in every way, not just for the new dragons but also returning villains as well.

The entire Dragon's gate series has had bundles of shifting alliances and loyalties, where you're never quite sure who to trust or who to root for. That really comes to a head here with... well, that'd be spoilers I guess.

absolutely Fantabulous and amazing

Thanks to you so much Lindsay Buroker for such a fascinating and intricate story. With intriguing story lines and the last chapter where everything changed and again the thoughts of danger to all on their world is in the balance. The dragons as dangerous or more so than ever before.
The chance that this could be a lasting solution, tantalisingly close.
Excellent and well worth reading the whole series,so far.

This booked gripped me and I couldn’t put it down. Magical battles galore and great character development. And snarky dragons talking to humans. Lindsay at her best. I initially wasn’t as sure about this series of Lindsay’s (they are all excellent though) as I felt that the first book started more slowly but having got to this point it may now be my favorite so far. I can’t wait for the final book.

Love this series. It's great to see the characters and relationships grow and change as the story goes on. The hope of the story going a specific way keeps you involved. Dragons, love, war, hatred, and hope combined always make for a great story, and this has all of these in spades. I refuse to give spoilers on reviews, and this one is just to let any readers know that this is not the most complicated series to follow, but it's worth it.

Good Development

I really enjoyed watching Jak and Shikari starting to manifest some of their potential and grow their bond as well as the rest of the crew.I can’t believe the next book in the series will be the last. The way their world is set up could easily lead to a Robert Jordan Wheel of Time length series with no low content filler.

Great story!

Often, by the time you get this far in a series, it starts to lose some of the intensity. Not this story! Couldn't put it down! How all the threads will be pulled together for one last book, I can't imagine! And I can't wait! Write fast Lindsay Buroker! Great read!

Another rollicking good ride!

This is a great series, similar to her steam punk adventures if you like those. Lots of action, some suspense, enough character growth to keep things interesting, a bit of romance but nothing g sappy. Just a great vacation from the real world for five to six hundred pages....

Sky on Fire (Dragon Gate Book 5)

A real cliff hanger. Exciting, suspenseful and just downright awesome. I loved it, had trouble putting it down and am sad I have to wait for the next book. Write faster or don't tell me when you have a new book. I guess I will have to start at the beginning and read all of your books again. I have them all.

The best in action & adventure

A finely crafted story of the evils one faces throughout their lives, and the actions they must take to surmount them. There is also a good amount of love and friendship between the major characters within the story. Trials and tribulations. Anyone who likes a great work of art, should love Lindsay’s creations.

Exciting story

Jadora Jak and Malek and a cast of many more heroes struggle on in their battle to escape from the master villain and the evil dragons. Can they find a cure for the parasite which infects the dragons? Will they get it in time ? Can't wait for the next part of the story. Oh dear it's months away.

I love this series!

I actually found myself getting ANGRY during this book at several points, because the characters are just plain getting their asses whooped! I was SO frustrated! I had to remind myself that having the ability to illicit such strong emotions through the written word just reminds me what an exemplary author Lindsay is! Enjoy!

Action action action

This is one of the best series I have ever read. Lots of action. A good writer holds your attention...a great writer makes you read faster to see what happens. Makes you love or hate a character. Sometimes takes the hate and turns it around to understanding a character in the story. Lindsay is a great writer.

fantastic read, wonderfully written

From book one of this series to this book, everything works together for a wonderful reading experience. The people and places are all well fleshed out. The characters emotions are what keep you flipping pages and reading until two in the morning. Can’t wait to get the last book!

Really great series

Kept me on the edge of both drama and expectations hope that Jack can survive another off world trip and cure all the dragons from the parasite that makes them evil . An additional bonus is the two potential romances with Jack and Rifles plus Males and Jadora. I am eager to read the last book in this series by Monday Buroker!

Uthari really has to get over himself

He really is stuck on himself. For a leader who keeps saying that he does things for the good of his people, it keeps looking like it's all for his good. And for all the good he keeps trying to do, his arrogance just keeps digging him in deeper and revealing that he's not a very wise 300year old leader.
