After a disease ravages his underground community, Winter escapes with his daughters to the dangerous surface of Earth. Believing the planet is largely abandoned, he struggles to make sense of this strange new world while trying to keep his family alive... But the surface is not all complicated artifacts and relics of a deserted universe. Winter is certain something—or someone—is hunting them.
He weaves wild tales to entertain and teach his daughters, turning celebrities into demigods and Abe Lincoln into an ice giant. As the journey grows darker and more dangerous, his mythologies keep not only his children from confusion and despair, but him as well.
With tensions rising and danger at every corner, will Winter keep his family alive long enough to finish his tales?
Winter's Myths is a multi-season serial currently publishing on Amazon's Kindle Vella. This book covers the first season. Each season will be available in book form upon completion.
Gage Greenwood is the best-selling author of the Winter's Myths Saga, and Bunker Dogs. He's a proud member of the Horror Writers Association and Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers association. He's been an actor, comedian, podcaster, and even the Vice President of an escape room company. Since childhood, he's been a big fan of comic books, horror movies, and depressing music that fills him with existential dread. He lives in New England with his girlfriend and son, and he spends his time writing, hiking, and decorating for various holidays
Wow!!! This was was just simply amazing! It’s not extreme horror, it’s more like horror/fantasy and the story was really unique and magical. It’s not something I am used to reading but I ended up loving it and is definitely one of my top reads this year! Keep an eye on this author because his writing and storytelling is outstanding! Looking forward to the next season!
"Oh my Kevin Bacon!" That was an epic journey!! I could not put this book down, at all, (Ok, I had to sleep and eat, but other than that I was glued!) The short, sharp chapters (which I love) helped to keep the pages turning, as well as the fantastic content! I would describe this as a supernatural, fantasy, horror, it had a bit of everything and it worked together so damn well! Its the end of the world, Winter and his daughters have to go above ground for the first time. They have lived their lives in the Underworld and now, due to death and disease, they have to venture out to the Upper World, which they have only ever heard about. To them, the Upper World is a place where everything is a threat, a danger, especially humans..
They come across several other groups of survivors on their journey, and not all are friendly! They are also discovering the world for the first time. There is a beautiful sense of wonder and mystery, and some downright creepy monsters! (I'll never look at a lamppost the same again!😂) The characters are extremely likeable, especially Winter himself, and I found myself getting quite attached! I also loved the tales that Winter told alongside the main story, or ‘Winter’s Myths’ as they are better known! Fantastical tales where Kevin Bacon is god, alongside his siblings, Abe Lincoln and Miley Cyrus to name a couple! These myths work really well alongside the main story, and are charming and a lot of surreal fun!
This book reminded me quite a bit of Stephen Kings Dark Tower series, which I adore! It was like a beautiful nightmare, with a powerful, intense and emotional ending! Awesome stuff! I cant wait to read more from Gage!! 🖤💙🖤
Wow this book. Like reading a billboard, on a barn, upside down, from a moving car (Yes my review will be as chaotic as the book itself). At it’s basis a father trying to protect his daughters from the horror the world has become and I can deal with Kevin Bacon and Abraham Lincoln in the same sentence, unworldly creatures, lampposts that come to life and husk ppl, but was sold with wrecking ball. Gage I will follow wherever this series takes me be it in a cave, quadrant seven in a galaxy far away, Tatooine, sitting by a cow, on the moon, or a common sewer in Derry I will start part 2 in days and I can’t wait. God speed on season three and don’t forget Everybody cut footloose.
Really looked forward to reading this book but it ended up not being what my mind hyped it up to be. It was okay and I finished it but I don't think I'll continue to the next book. The idea of the story was interesting. It just didn't flow well for me. The writing was a bit simplistic and the characters kind of odd. Winter, the father, talked and acted like more like a child than the adult he was. The book seemed to not quite know if it wanted to be a young adult book or not. I don't know if it is because I ended up listening to it instead of reading it or not, as the narrator's voice made it sound a bit childish. I am definitely a minority in this opinion of the book so maybe I missed the mark somewhere.
Gage Greenwood has a talent for blending fantasy and horror, and this story is one where his talent for it shines brightly.
We follow Winter and his daughters, Violin and Candlestick, who have left their subterranean home to brave the frightening world above. Everything is new and strange, and very frightening, so to soothe his daughters on their travels, Winter tells stories. Winter's myths are of wild adventures, celebrity demi-gods and historical giants. The stories help the trio make sense of this strange new world as they traverse it, but danger is always lurking.
I'm not personally big on fantasy but Greenwood delivers such compelling characters it's hard not to invest in Winter's journey. From the monsters in our mind to the very real monsters that disguise themselves as people, we follow Winter and his daughters with the same curiosity and trepidation that they feel. At first glance, I thought the book was YA but some of the pivotal moments are raw and terrifying which plants it firmly within the boundaries of horror.
A hugely enjoyable adventure. I'm looking forward to picking up the second book because this one ended on a huge cliffhanger!
The first season of Gage Greenwood's serial 'Winters Myths' is an interesting journey of a Father and his two daughters trying to survive in an unfamiliar post apocalyptic world. This series combines action, adventure, fantasy, and horror all together. It pulled me in immediately and never let go!
I just realized I didn’t write a review on here for this. Like what? This story was stunning. Engrossing, lyrical, and legendary. I fell in love with the girls immediately and couldn’t wait to see how they and Winter would fare on the surface. Now I can not wait for the next book!!!
For months I’ve been seeing the stellar reviews for this book. How it was so unique and original. How it had some of the best characters in recent memory. I’m happy to report, it’s all true. This book was phenomenal, with some memorable scenes scattered throughout and a cast of characters I absolutely loved. I’m a huge fan of post apocalyptic stories to begin with, but I admit I read enough so some of them start to blend together in my mind. This one will not be confused with any other book. The development of Winter, Candlestick, and Violin through the novel was perfect. The lamppost creature and the husks were terrifying. The discovery of many day to day objects by the family who had never seen most of the objects before added both humor and charm. I can’t wait to dig into Winter’s Legacy!
Full disclosure: I have been wary of “world ending/pandemic” novels after these last few years and wasn’t sure what to expect from this. What a pleasant surprise to find myself connecting with and caring about these vastly different characters and their lives in the world left to them. I’m intrigued by both the story of Winter and his family, and the one he tells his children as an escape from their new reality. ALSO I think this would make an amazing graphic novel!
This story was so awesome. Very intriguing and full of adventure. I loved the character names which were so unique and very memorable. I absolutely recommend this author and anything he puts out. Gage Greenwood is definitely gifted with a pen.
Oh my goodness. Let’s talk about this book being the EMBODIMENT of everything everywhere all at fucking once, and I mean that in the most complimentary way! Wowwwww. Seriously, you should have witnessed my dramatizations and reactions throughout reading Winter’s Myths, you couldn’t pay the best damn actor in the world to reenact them.
I am officially a die-hard Gage Greenwood fan. I am now a Gagent of Chaos, simple as that. He is brilliant, and an incredibly gifted writer. This is clear from Winter’s Myths alone, and I still have an entire second book to the series waiting for me to crack open, and he’s currently writing the third. I was never into fantasy novels, even dark fantasy, but my mind may have just changed.
Honestly, you can’t really limit this book to one genre. It falls beautifully all over the place. It’s not only dark fantasy— but it has elements of horror, dystopia, and a bit of thriller packed in as well. There is plenty of action and adventure, though most of the action and adventure is not very pleasant for the cast of characters.
While this probably won’t make sense until you read it — the book jumps around everywhere, yet has such a simple and straightforward foundation/storyline. The story follows Winter and his two young daughters, Violin and Candlestick (yes Violin and fucking Candlestick), as they navigate the upper world aka Earth. They’ve just been forced to escape their underground home/colony after a nasty and fatal disease ravages it, leaving behind their ill family members. The upper world is new to them — unseen and terrifying. Myths of murderous humans and a horrible society bring fear to the three. All Winter knows is that humans are bad. The upper world is bad. Kill to survive. And this, he instills into his fiesty, kick-ass little girls. The goal is to survive, and as you follow the three on their journey, you connect to each and every one of them.
To make this journey bearable, Winter often tells his girls stories— myths consisting of a demigod version of Kevin Bacon, a gigantic Abraham Lincoln, Miley Cyrus, a raccoon named Rapture, and mythical gods. Yes…. all these random people (and animals) are in the same story. IT WORKS, just trust me. If this paragraph alone doesn’t show you just how creative you need to be to make demigod Kevin Bacon and Miley Cyrus work, then I don’t know what else can prove that.
I love Gage’s writing style, it flows so well. Plot, world-building, and character development all deserve five stars across the board. And if you go into the book blind, it’s even better! It’s not like you’re prepared for anything in the book anyway, that’s impossible haha. Ugh, bravo and well done with Winter’s Myths. Any fantasy novel I read after this will have to battle a tough contender, because this was one of my favorite reads of the year so far.
And Violin? I love her. I’m rooting for her. She is such a fiery badass. I need her to thrive.
But Gage, you broke my heart with the ending. I’m looking for some redemption or peace of mind in book two! My heart broke into a million pieces, but what an excellent end to welcome the oncoming second book.
Slapping my 5 out of 5 stars on the table for this one! Read this book. I cannot wait to dig into Winter’s Legacy to continue this fantastic journey.
Edit— Adding my favorite quote from the book: “No. Humans never save, they kill. This is a trick. Somehow, they are tricking us. It was Kevin Bacon who saved me.” Pure gold.
“What? No. What? Nooo. It can’t be done” Those are the exact words that just escaped my mouth when I read the last lines in this book. I need the next book to be finished, so I can read what happens next. Now, if not sooner.
As I told the author when I was halfway through, this one had had some MaddAddam Trilogy by Margaret Atwood vibes … Similar in feel and similar in the fact that more people should know about it, because it’s that damn good.
From the use of pop culture as folklore, to the dystopian underpinnings and to the characters that were so easy to connect with… this journey was absolutely riveting. I can’t remember the last time I demolished a 400 plus page novel in less than 24 hours.
I have a major book hangover right now … read this at your own peril, as you won’t want it to end.
2024 has been my year of Gage, and since I've read all of his new releases (starting with Bunker Dogs and ending with In The Eyes, In The Shadows), I figured it was time to go back to where it all started. This was such a wild ride from beginning to end, and the last page had me like, 😧 "Where's the rest?!" Thankfully, I have the second book sitting next to me, and I'm putting the other four (yikes) books I'm reading on pause for a minute.
The story follows Winter, a man who has left his underground home with his two young daughters to escape the devastation taking place there. While navigating the world topside, they learn that something has equally devastated the human race. We follow along as they try to find a new home for themselves while also listening in on Winter's excellent storytelling. New friends, monsters, and the wonders of the human experience abound as they race to find their place in the new world.
This book is definitely one of the weirder books I've read this year, but in the best way possible. You really just have to trust the process and let yourself be carried away with the story. I found myself reading huge sections of this book, unable to put it down, just to see what happened next. The characters are unique and lovable, and I found myself very invested in their storylines. I can't wait to crack book two open and see what happens next!
What happens when humanity is wiped out before you even get a chance to truly come to know it?? That's the world Winter and his daughters face when they are forced to leave the only home they've ever known. To survive in this new world they are going to have to learn to adapt and trust , going against all they've been taught. I fell in love with the characters immediately. Chock full of personality, perseverance, and resilience. The monsters were creative and terrifying! This story was deliciously weird and so much fun! Filled with adventure, intrigue, and suspense, and even a well placed dash of humor thrown in here and there. I listened to the audiobook and Sean Cordry did a spectacular job of bringing this story to life and helped me really feel all the emotions! Fear, anger, frustration, sadness, hope. All.The.Emotions! Whether you like Kevin Bacon, horror, fantasy, mythology, sci-fi or dystopian thrillers...this book has it all, literally!
Wow! Wow! Wow! This is such an amazing book. It does not fit into one single genre. It kind of covers everything. It has comedy, tragedy, horror, fantasy, devastation, and so much more.
This is honestly such a unique and beautiful story. I’ve never read anything like it before. Chapter 2 cannot arrive quick enough.
This is an instant classic that needs to be shared with everyone of all ages.
Thank you Gage Greenwood for bringing this world into my life.
Oh wow! My heart right now. This book is amazing and addicting. A great mix of fantasy and horror. I don't think my heart stopped pounding so hard while reading this. I'm dying for more. This one is a must read!
I just finished Winter’s Myths last night. If you are a fan of dark fantasy and post apocalyptic horror you don’t want to miss this action packed very original story (and the story within the story with Kevin Bacon among others)
This was so wild. I wouldn’t even know how to describe what I just read…a post-apocalyptic folk lore? A cross between The Road and Watership Down? A scrambled up pop-culture acid trip? Those all fit but none do Winters Myth justice
I started this one and put it down a couple of times. At first I thought it was silly. The third time I picked it up I truly was hooked. I enjoyed the meshing of two worlds. Humanity came to Winter. By the end I could not wait to read Season Two. Violin and Candlestick have become two people whose story I need to finish.
I went into this book as blind as possible only learning that it’s a post apocalyptic horror/fantasy and with that knowledge I started my journey into Winter’s Myths and what a journey it is!
It follows Winter a man who with his two young daughters Violin and Candlestick have to escape from there home, the only home they have ever known to survive some mysterious illness that has killed off everyone they know and love. As they make there way into a new and dangerous landscape they have to learn in the fly how to survive and who can be trusted and who has evil intent for them.
I am giving this book 5 stars and highly recommend it to any and everyone! This book was a wild ride and it’s only season one of their journey, I am so looking forward to season 2.
Oh. My. Bacon. I really expected something else when I started this book. I didn’t think I’d appreciate comedic elements in my horror. I thought the fantasy elements would be too much.
I was SO wrong. I cried, laughed, and couldn’t put this book down. This is my new favorite book, and I need the sequel immediately. My only regret is I had it on my TBR for so long. Alllllll the stars go to this one!!
Winter’s Myths, Is about winter and his two daughters violin and candlestick. They are forced to leave their underground home. Everyone has died and taking their chances above ground with the humans is their best bet. Unfortunately it seems like something has wiped the humans out as well, but like them a few remain and then fortunately it seems to be only the bad ones. Throughout their ordeal winter tells his daughters fairytales made up of things they have seen in this new strange place they have come to live or at the very least survive. I found the fairytales just as entertaining as the horror story! The best part of the fairytale is Kevin bacon his brothers with monumental Abraham Lincoln who is just as big as the monument and they’re going to save the humans I totally and completely love the story and cannot wait for the second book of course I’m only hope and there’s a second One. You don’t run across great books like this every day and I am so glad I got to read this one. That’s why you should always checkout free promotions that is where I found this author and I’m so glad I did. This is the second grade book I have read from him both involving the scary lamp post and I look forward to more. Please forgive any errors as I am blind and dictate my review but all opinions are definitely my own.
Wow! Just wow! Typically I am not really into dystopian fantasy but this book was so much more! Things I especially loved about this book: * character development. This author is a master at building multi- dimensional characters. Every character is so fleshed out that you can identify someone you know in that character. And, I LOVE their names! * originality This book is unlike anything I have ever read. Winter's Myths, stories the main character tells his young daughters to ease their worries are so freaking imaginative! The tie -ins to popular culture were so fun! * vibe. This book combines fantasy, horror and more but does so with hope, love and caring. The importance of family. The importance of decency. The importance of community are all threaded through the storyline. * the dog. I love that dog! * short chapters I have ADD and read in chunks. Love short(er) chapters as they make it so much more manageable! * the dog. Did I mention I love the dog? All in all, I can honestly say there isn't anything I didn't love about this book except that it ended! So ready to see what happens next!
This book… where to begin…. It has become one of my top 5 favorite books this year. I laughed, I cried, I said “wtf”. It left me feeling a lot of different emotions. I constantly was telling myself “Just one more chapter” only to read 5 more.
It is very well written, with a mix of fantasy and horror (two of my favorite things). I found myself lost in this book. It puts you in another world, one you can completely get absorbed in quite easily.
You’ve got Kevin Bacon, the Demi God, Abraham Lincoln, the ice giant, and a little Miley Cyrus thrown in (I’ll let you read about that one for yourself 😉).
We follow the lives on Winter and his two daughters, Violin & Candlestick, as they brave the Earth after their underground home was ravaged with a disease killing their loved ones.
There’s action, monsters, humor, and more in this book.
I highly recommend this book if you haven’t already read it.
Gage Greenwood did a fantastic job writing this book & I 100% can’t wait for Season Two!
I loved every moment of Winter’s Myths from start to finish and I cannot wait to read Volume 2. This is a wonderful blend of survival, family, horror and fantasy/magic. I will be recommending this to everyone!
This is heavily promoted in a horror group I’m in, but the biggest horror is the time I wasted and the fact that Miley Cyrus and her stupid song are in it. It’s not horror, but fantasy. It’s poorly written and quite juvenile.
I finished this book late last night with tears in my eyes. I generally will let that comment from someone else discourage me from reading or watching whatever they recommend, but I'm begging you to NOT do as I would do. I'm going to strongly encourage you to read this book and go ahead and grab yourself a copy of Winter's Legacy before you even start Winter's Myth. You will not want to wait for it once you get to the end of Winter's Myth. This book is unlike any book I've ever read. As a matter of fact, I may never have considered reading it if Gage Greenwood hadn't plugged it so many times in one of my FB groups. So...side note, if you're an author, musician, artist, etc. sell yourself, believe in yourself and others will follow suit. He sold me on giving this book a chance and I am grateful I did. Now back to the book, Winter's Myth is quirky, at times it's dark and it's always entertaining. It is so incredibly strange, yet one of the most intriguing books I've ever read. I had so many questions for the first 15ish chapters that if I'd had a whole day I could've dedicated to this book, I would've. I laughed, I cried, I had a few WTH moments, I cringed, I scratched my head and I messaged the author thanking him and his brain for creating such interesting stories. I say stories, because there's the main story about Winter, his daughters and their attempts to establish a new home in a world that is completely foreign to them and then there's the story that Winter tells the girls to distract them from stress of their life. Putting the reader in the shoes of Winter, navigating a world so foreign that he refers to the sun as the heat disc, was genius. As the reader, you begin to feel how lost, how frustrated and just how scary it would be to not understand 50% of the world you find yourself forced to live in. Imagine that dream you've had, because we all have, where only half of it made sense and the other half was so strange or messed up that you suddenly find yourself saying "wake up and get out of this madness," but you can't. You can't wake up from it because it is now your reality. I felt it, I was right there with these characters. I found myself most identifying with Violin, her desire to trust, to explore, to be openminded and her insecurities about being misunderstood. I'm sure you'll find that one of these characters shares your spirit, your thoughts, your frustrations and if you don't, you are way too normal. I can't wrap up the review without at least mentioning that Kevin Bacon, Miley Cyrus and Abraham Lincoln are all demigods in the story within the story. This story within the story will have you wishing you could spend just one hour in Gage Greenwood's brain because it must be one of the most entertaining places to be on this planet. Where a few folks have written they were distracted by this substory, I found it incredibly wonderfully weird and very relevant to the main story. There are some incredible lessons to be learned if you pay attention, but even if you don't get deep enough to catch the lessons, you are guaranteed to be entertained. Don't go into this book with any expectations based on your ideas of horror, fantasy or sci fi. This book is it's own genre and can't be labeled (much like my favorite humans). Do get yourself a copy of this book and allow yourself to become completely immersed in a world that only Gage Greenwood could bring to life so brilliantly.
