Girl of Shadow and Glass

Dare to dream. Live to defy.

I can't remember the last time I dared to dream about anything—not about my future, never about love, and certainly not about the sorcery the ancestors left behind.

All that's about to change.

Kith has spent each of her seventeen years being coddled by the wisps and semi-wisps of her world. Born physically fragile, her family, elders and neighbors have never allowed her the independent life she craves. It's no wonder she looks forward to her brush with sorcery each morning. When she passes through an ancient gate to a neighboring world, the animal-like shadows are there to welcome her—and the shadows aren't the coddling type.

Bound by treaty to feed and educate her, the magical shadows have become beloved teachers for Kith—until one of them makes a shocking decision. Kith must succeed at a new type of education: she must learn to run faster than a shadow or risk going hungry.

With the weight of an inter-world treaty on her shoulders--and encouragement from a young man with courtship on his mind—Kith sets out on a journey to become stronger, smarter and more independent, all within the bounds of her dying world and the body she was born with. Because as the last of her ancestors' protective sorcery gives way, it's no longer enough for Kith to defy the odds.

It's time to live to defy.

It did feel a bit more science fiction than fantasy, but it was still a great book. This is a beautifully written story setting up the world of wisps, shades, and shadows. There's a heavy dose of history laid out throughout Kith's lessons.

Girl of Shadow and Glass is beautifully written and I really like the main character of Kith. I love that she is the oldest shade-child to survive in Sundown and that every day she faces challenges to stay alive in a world that does not support her survival.

This book probably doesn’t move fast enough for some readers but if you stick with it then you’ll enjoy a really original story.

I received a free ebook of this novel. This review is my honest opinion and is written voluntarily.

Thank you to the author and Equality Book Tours for sending me a copy of this fantasy novel with intriguing characters set in an inventive world.

The book has an interesting setting but let me down in execution. I was in the dark in the beginning and we only got the gist of the story after 50% of the book. It felt like an info dump and not enough information at the same time.

The characters were interesting and detailed. I enjoyed getting to know them more throughout the story. Kith was an incredible character to follow around. I loved watching her learn and understand the world and the challenges she must face.

The pace set here was too slow for my taste. It finally picked up speed by the end of the book. The book ended with too many questions unanswered and open endings.

What is this book about????

I was confused through the ENTIRE book. I don't understand what the premise even was, what exactly a shadow is, what the point of the main character going through this gate to learn things from people who abuse her every day just to eat food from them when she can eat food from her parents. Then she can't eat from her parents either? She starves? Why? What are these elders? Why can't Kith run? Nothing is explained at all. So you go through with all this flowery sentences with no points that don't give you basic character features , backstory, descriptions, why's. I was annoyed in no time trying to figure it all out. Half the people are semi solid , why? And what's the purpose? I just was lost. There is no thought put into the story to give you reason to want to know more because your too confused not begins with. This is a complete waste of my time and disappointed from start to finish.

Incorrect spelling and grammar on almost every page really took me out of it. Nothing actually happens until the end of the book, and by then I just didn't care enough. I liked the characters, although the relationships between them didn't have much depth - the romance aspect added nothing to the story. I feel like the entire book could be condensed into one chapter as a prologue for whatever comes next for Kith.

Ok now I've gotten the things I don't like out of the way... The world building is amazing. The different types of people and the history and all the different worlds, really fascinating. I'd love to see this universe revisited by the author once they have more experience (and an editor please).

Kith Canto was born in a world where magic is fading but can cross the gate between Sundown and its neighboring world. The shadows there teach her about their world. The shadows want to take over Sundown, and consider Kith too weak to stop them.

Girl of Shadow and Glass is book one of the Tara’s Necklace series. That refers to the different worlds of the Taran System, named after the world’s savior Tara. Each world is sealed by a Gate, and on Kith’s world of Sundown, there are people who are part Shades, part Wisps, and few that have any solidity. Kith is a shade child, the only one in her village. She’s solid, and those of her village consider her weak; without the Shadows to teach and feed her, they feel she would die. She’s the only one that is taught certain histories or skills, and repeating these lessons to her teachers is how we learn them. Most of the other denizens are wisps, fragile enough that wind can disrupt them.

The purpose of teaching and feeding Kith when Sundown is a land of famine and drought is confusing. Her people tell her not to run or hurry, that she ought to rest because she is weak. Then her teachers ask her questions about her world in an almost creepy way. The whole situation between the shades and wisps was confusing, as well as why the Elders made a deal with the shadows anyway. We literally have to get halfway through the book when one of Kith’s teachers decides to tell her the truth about her world and the people in it. That’s a long time to have to deal with confusing terms and characters that don’t seem to like each other.

I raced through the second half of the book more to see if it would make more sense than because I was super invested in Kith’s story. The final quarter of the book is far more interesting than the first half but ends on something of a cliffhanger. I’m not a big fan of those; I like seeing potential hooks for further books, but this one has to feel complete as well. There are too many openings and not enough answered questions here.

Thank you to Amazon Stuff Your Kindle Day @amazon and CK Beggan @ckbeggan for this free ebook.
“Girl of Shadow and Glass” (Tara’s Necklace #1) by CK Beggan⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Genre: YA Fantasy. Location: Sundown and The Open World, both in the Taran System. NOTE: Disability inclusive.

THE SERIES: Kith Canto is chronically Ill/disabled. She was born into a the dying world of Sundown where magic is fading. Born physically fragile, she’s a shade child, the only one in her village. She’s spent 17 years coddled by wisps, semi-wisps, family, elders, and neighbors who don’t allow her an independent life. Each morning, she looks forward to passing through the world gate to The Open World where the animal-like shadows welcome her, feed her-and don’t coddle her.

THIS BOOK: Bound by treaty to feed and educate Kith, the magical shadows are her beloved teachers, until one decides Kith must learn to run fast to earn her daily meal. With the weight of an inter-world treaty on her shoulders, and encouragement from friend and admirer Kumiel, Kith sets out to become stronger, smarter, and more independent, within the bounds of her disability. The dangerous secrets she learns may destroy all she knows and loves.

Author Beggan has written a book about a chronically ill hero in a broken fantasy world. As an author with chronic illness and pain, she helps us understand Kith’s internal struggle, physical ailments, and brave battle. Beggan created a complicated, interesting world different from ours and yet full of similarities. There’s a detailed Appendix that you’d do well to bookmark. The book slows down a bit as a shadow explains the worlds’ histories. I skimmed those and read the condensed version Kith tells her father. It’s sweet and sad, it’s personal and powerful, it’s heartfelt and hopeful, it’s a great beginning for a series, and it’s 4 stars from me 🌵📚💁🏼‍♀️ #girlofshadowandglass #ckbeggan

❤️ BOOK REVIEW 💜

🌞🌞🌞🌞🌞

Have you ever connected to a book on
such a deep level that you couldn't talk about it? I finished Girl of Shadow and Glass (Book One of Tara's Necklace series by @ckbeggan) a week ago, and I'm just now able to find the words to express how much I love it.

From the first sentence, I felt at home with this story. Kith could be me, or you. The reader connects so deeply with her that every relationship feels real, every conversation plays out like a memory, every feeling makes you wince or smile or cry or harden.
This girl is an unlikely hero in a broken, magical fantasy world.

The descriptions are concise, refreshing, surprising and playful. The dialogue is witty, authentic and comfortable.
The writing is spectacular, and you can see the world Beggan creates - the dusty brown dirt covering your clothes to the sloshy sticky mud that eats your shoes in Sundown or the green tall grass swaying under the bright sun in (.... you'll find out 😉) . This book is full of wisps, animals that chat and portals for travel. If you love fantasy with real feelings, a dash of love and impending doom, then you need to read this immediately.

On a more personal note, as a person with chronic illness, I appreciate Kith more than I could ever describe. Because of her body, she is considered weak by her community and everyday she struggles with limbs and organs and joints that want to hold her back and limit her life. Her internal struggle, physical ailments and brave battle, hit home for me. If you fight this everyday, you will befriend and root for this untraditional hero. And the best part? Even if you don't connect with her on this level, you will love her all the same.
@ckbeggan thank you for writing this. It's magic. ✨
I can't wait to read #2!
@katieandbreypa thank you for the opportunity 💜

This book is very original or at least I haven't read any similar before.
And it feels like if you dig in the story you could find a myriad or meaning underneath it.
The world building is amazing and intricate and so very different to anything I have read.
In this world the people is not solid but from some exceptions of kids that are born solid and can get hurt and need to eat (regular human) , I struggled understanding the solidity of the diferent habitantes of sundown, each one have differences in how solid and what they can feel or touch and I struggled a bit understanding this differences, but by the end of the book I was able to understand it all.
There is a point by the middle of the book with a lot of world building and history and there was a lot all together and even though I did understand perfectly the main points, I missed a lot of the small details and punctual events of their civilization. I would have like to learn this story maybe more slowly from the beginning of the book so to graps all the details easily.
This book was quiet and lovely I enjoyed it a lot. The MC doesn't know at the beginning but she is strong and capable of anything. I cant wait to read the next book cause the clifhanger 😱 guys amazing. And I can't wait to read Fioncha's point of view and what she's been up to. Also I am in love with lovely Kumiel❤️

Mixed feelings.... I don't like the fact that it took sooo long to explain what you are reading. It took almost half the book to understand the tribes and the worlds and not even the whole thing, just some tips. I do like the way the author writes, the sentences, the thoughts. And I laughed at a point or two, with is a huge plus. I like the romance that just kind floats in the air. I don't like how complicated this book and story is. I literally have to read whole chapters twice, and go back and forth to connect the dots.
I felt the parents so distanced and then suddenly so close to their daughter . I am really confused.

I do like the adventure that has happened after 80% of the book, but again, it's a bit too late 🥺 I understand there is a second book and it was basically a prologue the whole first book. I liked the ending and how dedicated everybody is to find out what happened to Kith. Also it was a pleasant surprise that the last chapter was Kumiel s perspective.

Probably I will read the next book. Just to see where this story goes.

This was an interesting read that had a great cover. This book had an interesting plot, that I found to be unique. The book was a bit slow with book only picking up by the end, but the last half of the book made me invested in the main character. I think this is a series I might have to keep up with.

This is Book One of Tara’s Necklace series and is a New Adult Portal Fantasy book set in a desert world of fading magic, a library with crumbling texts and lost knowledge, and lush grasslands in a world of shadow creatures. If I am being honest, I had a hard time getting into this book in the beginning. I personally had a hard time following the information being given and while reading would often forget what was just said especially in the first part of the book. That being said, once I made it further through the book I started to like where the story was going because there was a lot more happening plot wise. I also enjoyed the scenes between Kith and Kumiel the most. I did like the main character and loved what she represented. You do not typically see chronic illness representation in a character, much less the lead in the story. Dealing with autoimmune disorders myself, I can understand how she feels.

If you are looking for a story with a female protagonist who learns what she can and can't do for herself rather than have other people determine her destiny.

The convenient guide at the back allows you a bit of a dive into this new world. It's always helpful when reading a fantasy story.

I also love the map at the start of the story to help you visualize it all.

I love how the author made the main character have a chronic illness, of sorts to really show that anyone can be the hero of their story. Perfectly encapsulates the viewpoint of a person with a disability.

Great blend of real life problems with a fictional realm.

This story was a fascinating read and elegantly written. A great stand alone book, but a better introduction to the series.

“I can't remember the last time I dared to dream about anything-not about my future, never about love, and certainly not about the sorcery the ancestors left behind. All that's about to change.” - Tara’s Necklace Book One

⭐️⭐️⭐️

This story follows Kith, a fragile 17 year old, living a sheltered life that turns upside down. Treaties, magic, and mystery mystery start Kith on an important adventure.

This book has a very interesting premise and the main character, Kith, is well developed throughout the story. This one starts off at a slower pace and takes some time to get into but it’s a good adventure.

📚Also Book 2 is out right now 📖

🎧Reminder as always that text to speech technology is an excellent way to listen to books that don’t have audio versions. It’s great if you’re busy or injured like myself.

This is a beautifully written story setting up the world of wisps, shades, and shadows. There's a heavy dose of history laid out throughout Kith's lessons. I particularly enjoyed the way this storytelling echos her rise from a dismissed shade-child who is encouraged to scarcely breathe for fear of injury. Kith's struggle to not only find value in herself but her purpose and also hope that she's not counting down the days till her inevitable end. Like Kith's journey, the world starts out slow, days being monotonous, but the ending makes it well worth it. In a sense, the reader will experience it all right along with Kith. I'm looking forward to reading more about her adventure, along with Finchoa and Kumiel.

“When speaking to the one you love is somehow so much harder than opening your hearts “

There is a female main character called Kith who wanted to go beyond the gateway of Sundown, the Lost World as the world was falling apart and shadows were lurking upon the gateway. The bond was growing between Kith and Kumiel yet sundown was falling apart, people were vanishing, the shadows were rising and Kith ventures on a quest to save the lost world yet a challenge was waiting with memories encircling her and ancestor’s sorcery becoming her cave. Will she defy the odds? Will ancestor’s sorcery protect her? Will she save the dying world?

I felt that the story was character driven and at some parts I felt lost. Though I really liked the characters and the lost world.

Honestly it just wasn’t for me. I’m sure there is a good market for this story, I just couldn’t get on board. I couldn’t wrap my head around the world building and felt like I never knew what was going on. Kith was fine, I’m sure there will be a lot of character building in the books to come, but she didn’t wow me as a main character. Honestly I really only stuck around to get to know Kumiel and Kith, but they only interacted a handful of times in this book. Overall it’s not a bad story, but you may have to read chapters more than once to get a good understanding of what’s happening. Also I didn’t realize there was an index explaining the types of characters and worlds until I got to the end. Definitely would recommend starting with that!

GOSAG was a beautiful coming of age story set in a portal world. Kith, the main character is a shade child who differs from the others of her world in how solid their body is…amongst other things you’ll have to discover.

While slow to start, the later half of the book is packed with things coming together and excitement. It’s very much a “the truth is revealed layer by layer”. There’s some very mild love interest (no spice) which lends a sweet side to the book where most of it seems to lean a bit YA/fantasy.

As with many first books in a series there is world building and groundwork to be laid for later. I can tell the series is set up to be complex and engaging for future books.

This was a fascinating book. The world and history the author created was unique and intriguing. The main character was likable and I enjoyed watching her grow and accept that she had a strength and purpose despite the rest of those in her world telling her she was weak. The story is well written and draws you in. Highly recommend to anyone who enjoys fantasy, adventure and a strong female main character that finds her inner strength and determination despite the obstacles in front of her. I am definitely looking forward to reading the second book!

Enjoyed tremendously. I received this book from voracious readers only, in exchange for an honest review. I selected it because it was identified as a book about chronic illness/disability and I was drawn to that unique perspective. Loved reading about the protagonist Kith and her coming of age as a person of difference in her world. The writing style and the story with both compelling. The only quibble I had was trying to keep the different groups and different worlds sorted in my mind. The names were too similar - shadows, sun shadows, senshadows; other worlds, outer worlds etc. When I decided to focus on the bigger story and let the details go, it was much easier.

“Girl of Shadow and Glass” was a really interesting take on a young adult portal fantasy novel!!! Even though Kith, the heroine, is mentally strong, she is physically fragile, and as a result, the people who care about her coddle her incessantly. Kith dreams of independence, but she knows that will likely never be her reality. I liked this book because it was very unique, the world building was intriguing and I liked the idea of wisps, semi wisps, and shade-children. Kith was a likable heroine, and I enjoyed her thought process and her interactions with other characters. I would definitely recommend!!!

I am not sure if it’s my fault but I was just confused almost the entire book. It was like there were hundreds of new words in somehow you had to figure out what they were and connect them to whatever they were talking about. I find myself rereading the same paragraph 100 times.
I finished the book and things started to make sense but there wasn’t enough happening for me to want to read the next book. I did get this book free on Kindle day. It was like a giant history book. Not my cuppa tea, but maybe someone elses’s. The book was clean, though with no language or profanity. Nothing sexual etc…

I was recommended this book by another reader, and it was recommended as a disability portal troupe, being disabled myself I thought awesome, I book I could slightly relate to, however, it not at all what I thought it would be. The book really surprised me with how good it was, the writing was well thought out, a unique plot and the characters and world building was rich and complex. This is definitely more science fiction rather than fantasy and would appeal to a new adult, young adult audience.

I would have to agree with the first review on here. It did feel a bit more science fiction than fantasy, but it was still a great book! It isn’t something I would normally read, as I more so read romance/fantasy. However, I do recommend this book to the lovers of science fiction/fantasy. This book definitely started off a little slow pace and I was a little confused at times. I just wasn’t used to the writing style.

I was really looking forward to this book and the storyline is interesting but I felt as though there was too much history and not much of real life to the story. I have noticed this in multiple series recently that I’ve loved the rest of the books for so I will be giving book 2 a chance! Overall I really like Kumiel and wish there was more of him in the story. Kith is kind of babied so I’m interested to see what she does in book 2.

The author does a decent job world building - it feels unique and new. I wish that her lesson, the one where she learned everything, was not as abstract as it was. It would have been nice to have understood the significance of things as they were introduced. The main character lives in the world - we do not. Other than that, it was interesting and worth the read.
