This novel is the journey of a young man named Haran, as he is frustrated with a broken relationship he embarks on a journey to Kedarnath. On this journey, he chances upon meeting Maitri, a young girl from the mountains of Uttarakhand. Through the love that blossoms between them, Haran is transformed, it seems like he has regained something pure and spiritual.
The central success of the novel is the incredible details with which the physical world is captured, be it the beauty of nature or the beauty of Maitri, the novel is a visual treat. The novel also brilliantly documents the cultural roots of people living in the Himalayas. It is through this journey Haran sees the wonder of life and nature, his anguish and frustrations are dissolved in the presence of Maitri, and Haran seems to be uplifted and sort of achieves salvation.
The novel's central theme is that through nature and the grandness that surrounds us one can find salvation. Nature and life are filled with duality, beauty is balanced by the ugly, life by death, sometimes they are two sides of the same coin. In the novel, we can find parallels of Sankhya philosophy in the novel, where the Prakriti with its three Gunas is a blessing and a curse. Also, there is a line when Maitri says the equivalent word for love is 'Maya'. Maya in Indian philosophy is the world of appearance. It is sometimes seen as a negative word that prevents people from achieving moksha, but in this novel, Haran sees the beauty of Maya. In Vishishtadvaitha philosophy Maya is also a jewel of Vishnu, through which we achieve happiness. Sometimes one cannot achieve happiness without sadness and they are part of Maya and an essential part of life. In this way, the novel echoes sometimes the lines of Bharathi in the song Nirpathuve.
In the novel, Maitri is also the Sakthi who guides the Sakta. She is at the same time the giver of pleasure when she takes Haran through the arduous journey but also the one who gives him the pain the next day. Haran achieves a moment of complete transformation at the end when he sees Maitri everywhere.
There are multiple layers and multiple ways to think about this brilliant novel.
