SHE GIVES LIFE. SHE DOESN’T TAKE IT. NOT ANYMORE.

As a Sister of Amara, Ceridwen has dedicated her existence to the purpose of her order. The life of a healer is demanding, requiring discipline, commitment, and sacrifice; virtues she once lived by for a different, darker purpose.

She lives in the hope that she might earn redemption for the sins of her past.

When Ceridwen is tasked with stopping an ancient monster only she can see from murdering the innocent, long dormant instincts are slowly rekindled. As she fully immerses herself in the dangerous hunt, she begins to question the monster’s motives, and why she was chosen to superintend the investigation.

Caught between her vows to peacefully serve and what she believes is her responsibility to protect the citizens of Eve City, Ceridwen is drawn reluctantly but inevitably back into the life she fought so hard to leave behind.

A sinister and profound story of sacrifice, hope, and betrayal set in a world that has forgotten its history; to its own detriment.

For fans of Sarah J Mass, Gabrielle Herd’s breakout YA fantasy novel encapsulates beautiful aesthetics, colourful characters and a world I’m very excited to see expanded.
Sassy and expertly written this is a tense, bloody thrill ride full to the brim with magic!

Great read! I enjoyed every part of this book. Both the world building and characters had me intrigued from the very start. Can’t wait for the next book in the series.

...

I missed reading such a beautifully written and incredibly captivating book. Lov it.

Ceridwen has a personality that reminds me of Aelin in a very original way, because they share certain attitudes, but their personalities are completely different. She's very badass and intelligent, and I feel like she has a reeeally deep past.

Speaking of the secondary characters, they were very well written. Yvaine initially seems innocent, but later we learn about her traumatic past and her true personality. Genevieve is the iconic wlw of the book and Ceri's old best friend. And Amara's Mother gives off a wise, ancient vibe, but I still don't trust her💋

The love interest didn't even make an appearance, a disappointment...

The action scenes were fabulous, but I expected more. I admit I have refined tastes, but I was expecting something completely different given the fan art. But it seems they're all from the second book that comes out today!!! I can't wait to read it🥳

i absolutely loved this book ❤️❤️ the world felt truly magical and i loved ceridwen as a character!! this first book was more about finding herself as a person, which i loved, and i’m so excited to see how her story continues and maybe even watch her fall in love 🤭 it was thrilling, exciting and intense, I’m so excited to see where this story goes!!

This vibrant world is filled with humans, faeries, and monsters. The story follows Ceridwen, a healer fleeing her traumatic yet mysterious past, told in third person. I was captivated by her abilities—healing, combat, and entering the memories of the dead—and how they intertwine with themes of found family, confronting trauma and fear, belonging, and strength. I enjoyed the in-depth character discussions on these themes, which added richness to the story. While I initially expected more romance, I appreciated that the book functions more as a backstory for the FMC before the second book, where her love interest is introduced (briefly touched upon in book one). The themes are woven into a compelling, mysterious plot, and I liked that the FMC didn’t return to her previous home for a man but went back to face her fears—"...whether I wish to help Bastian or not."

This book is so incredibly unique!! And the aesthetics are so amazing: cities in clouds, ancient goddesses, a healer running from her past as an assassin, rare and unique magic, found! family!, a fmc who volunteers at a museum (and steals their art), she can walk in 💀 people’s memories, and an ancient monster only she can see.

I was invested in a story that felt purely original and focused so heavily on the beauty of friendship and the power determination, courage, and kindness holds. And I cannot wait to read book 2🩵☁️💫🏛️🗡️🧚🏼‍♀️☕️

Everyone add this to your tbr right now🙂‍↕️🙂‍↕️🙂‍↕️

I DNF this at 47%. This wasn't a bad book, I just found the plot itself wasn't for me, nor the writing. I was bored, and this book turned very quickly into a murder mystery style book with touches of fantasy, zero romance at this stage as well. We spent the book on the main fmc's head for 37% ish percent than were thrown in another pov of another female, and idk, didn't work for me.
Others may enjoy. If you like murder mystery, some fae (limited skills and or magic shown), and a lot of smirks you'll probably eat this up.

interesting enough to keep reading but bleh

Honestly, this is a hard read, usually I fly through books, but the third person was killing me. And then there’s no clear answers for absolutely anything. It’s kind of like grasping for straws and you’re hopeful to catch one…. But ya don’t. Definitely wouldn’t recommend this to anyone really.

This was a really great fantasy novel!

It had been a long time since I last read one, and I find this book very accessible ; perfect for someone new to the genre or returning to it after a long break.

Settings in fantasy novels don’t get mentioned enough in my opinion. In this one, I really enjoyed that it takes place in a city (Eve City) where it snows all year round. I also loved the descriptions of the great library, the "Grand Spire", within the Cathedral, where our main character resides. As well as the "Cloud District," home to the king, which sits high up in the clouds.

Ceridwen, the female protagonist, has left behind her former life in Orion City to start over from scratch in Eve City, hoping to put her past behind her.
She might come across as unnecessarily mean; she’s often aggressive toward others and lacks patience. However, I suspect that as we learn more about her history, we’ll gain a better understanding of where she comes from and why she acts the way she does. While that doesn’t necessarily excuse her behavior, I don’t think you have to like a character to recognize that they make for a compelling protagonist.

I really enjoyed the relationships Ceridwen forms with certain characters, such as the Mother of Amara, Genevieve, and Yvaine; especially the platonic love that Genevieve and Yvaine feel for her. They are incredibly loyal and will do anything to help Ceridwen, no matter how difficult the circumstances.

There are several plot twists I didn't see coming, particularly in the final hundred pages or so.

Although we do learn some details about Ceridwen’s past, for the most part, the story keeps us in the dark throughout. It didn’t bother me, but it would be a lie to say I’m not eager to learn more: about her relationship with Bastian, who Ceridwen really is (even though the last sentence of the book gives us a hint, I want to know more about what it means to be "Lady Eve", what she did in the past to become so feared, etc.), are there others Vihaan and also why she fled Orion City.
I know the second volume will shed more light on all of this, so I’m really looking forward to reading it!

And as for the beast, Akriel; I’m so curious to find out who the "master" guiding it is, and why it’s targeting Ceridwen!

The author’s writing style is pleasant and fluid, making it easy to binge-read without any trouble.

Overall:
I’d recommend it if you’re looking for a fantasy story that’s simple to read yet intriguing. One that leaves you with questions on your mind by the time you reach the end.

it makes me sad to rate this 2 ⭐️ going into this book i was fully prepared to love this and want to dive deeper. the premise of the book has so much potential i just feel like there was areas where it was lacking. overall i struggled to connect with the story and the characters.

one of my biggest issues was the POV. i found the perspective and the switching to be distracting and confusing. therefore it was hard for me to stay fully immersed in the story when i would get confused. the writing took some getting used to.

i also went into this book expecting more of a romance story with ceridwen and her love interest but instead i felt as if we got more of a plot with genevieve. this making ceridwens story feeling like it was on the back burner.

interesting book just not fully for me, but had interesting ideas and a good concept.

I think this book had so much potential but sadly didn’t live up to those expectations for me, I really think others would enjoy this read but it just wasn’t for me I didn’t really connect to any of the characters and the plot was kinda just blah

Most would be surprised that I managed to read an entire book that didn’t have any romance, but I did (I’m also surprised). It was very entertaining nonetheless. And I suspect the next one will have a little romance thrown in :)

I really liked this! Though it was slow at some parts but it redeemed itself! So excited how the series will evolve and the romance🫣 The end? I suspected it, but not how it went...
