Amazing Animal Journeys is just that! Amazing! Tasmanian author Jennifer Cossins provides fascinating information with beautiful coloured illustrations in each species she's chosen to share with us.
From the Arctic Tern that holds the record for the longest migration of all birds in the world as it flies between the north and south poles in their never ending search for sunlight; to the fascinating Christmas Island Red Crab that march in their millions once a year, from the forests to the ocean where they mate and spawn; the Caribou who have roamed the Arctic tundra of Canada and Alaska for thousands of years; the Emperor Penguin where both parents raise the chicks, starting with the father balancing the egg on his feet for four months without food or drink while the females feed in the ocean. When the chick hatches, the females return and the males head to the ocean to feed. There is much more fascinating and interesting information in this book, which is designed and created for children around 7 years of age and over.
An excellent gift for the young person in your life, Amazing Animal Journeys is one I recommend highly.
With thanks to Hachette AU for my ARC to read in exchange for an honest review.
This is a beautifully illustrated non-fiction book for young school kids. Jennifer’s passion for nature and animals is clear as readers are transported on the incredible journeys these animals take each year.
Mr6 loved flicking through the pages to admire the pictures, and choosing which animal to learn about first (and second and third etc).
Did you know the Swift Parrot is not only the world’s fastest parrot, but one of only three parrots on Earth that migrate?? Another beautifully illustrated book packed with facts and fascinating migration journeys- a must have for every classroom and library. A wonderful read- highly recommend.
‘Did you know that Arctic terns have the longest migration of all birds, flying from the Arctic to Antarctica and back each year? Or that the wildebeest migration in east Africa is so vast it can be seen from outer space? Come along on these amazing animal journeys! A beautifully illustrated title chock-full of fascinating animal facts that focuses on 25 animal species from Australia and around the world with intriguing migration journeys. Perfect for readers aged 7+ who delight in learning about the animal kingdom and the world around them.’ This book was truly lovely. I love it when a children’s book is written in a way that doesn’t talk down to its audience as well as being interesting for adults who may be reading with their kids, and this is exactly what this book is. As an adult, I learned a lot reading this book and I adored the beautiful illustrations. There were so many wonderful animals featured in this book; some of them I had never heard of before I read this book. I also loved that the author included information about the dangers these animals are facing due to climate change and human actions. Jennifer Cossins has done a fantastic job with this book, both as a writer and illustrator. The information in this book was entertaining and really well presented. There was enough information to spark interest while being written in a way that was assessable and easy to understand. As for the illustration; they were utterly breathtaking. Each page of this book was filled with beautiful, full-colour illustrations that perfectly complement Jennifer Cossins’ writing. The combination of amazing writing and stunning illustration combine to create a truly amazing book. Amazing Animal Journeys by Jennifer Cossins is a must-have for all young readers and their families.
The design of this book is superb - with full colour pages and double page spreads using caerfully selected colours to complement each animal, its environment and to highlight names and a stand-out fact relating to its migratory habits. The text introduces the animal and its mkayur migratory habits and identifies relevant drivers for their journeys - such as breeding, feeding, shelter etc. A particular unique and interesting fact is inset within the text in large, bold, coloured text in a different font. Did you know that the sockeye salmon change colour as the travel to attract a mate or that the globe skimeer dragonfly can fly over 300 kilometers without touching land.
The intricate and accurate illustrations - line and coloured - present the animals and an aspect of the habitat to add further visual information - the emperor penguins on the ice, the caribou climbing a tiered, rocky pathway, the man-made bridges to help the Christmas Island Crab migrate across buys roads. Some additional coverage on the effects of climate and conservation, a glossary and the welcome addition to this book of an outline of a world map - with the inclusion of outlines of each of the animals and a dotted line to show its migratory path.
A wonderful book to inspire, intrigue and inform young inquiring readers.
